Everything about Squable was exceptional-- especially the chef. The menu was interesting, the ambiance was nice, and the service was excellent. Standouts on the menu were: the beef tartare, the sweet potato, the golden rice, the lasagna, the oysters, and the burger. There are no bad options. Carlos was perfect as our server. He was attentive and his recommendations were spot on. The wine selection was good and the cocktails/mocktails we tried were great. I'm already planning my return and I don't even live in this state. Service was good. There were three of us and we ordered too much. If you don't like a super high-fat dish, don't order anything we had (except the salad). I didn't like my meal because there were too many competing flavors and we started with the heaviest thing. Here's what we had in the order it was served (it doesn't all come at once): 1. Bacon fat hash browns - large serving, very dense and heavy, hollandaise was good but just too much going on with this dish. We only ate half. 2. Marinated mussels on toast- mussels are served chilled which I didn't like; the bread would be perfect except all the butter or sauce on it. 3. Simple green salad - I wouldn't normally eat salad at brunch but glad we had something light! 4. Oyster mushroom hash - didn't finish it. Mushrooms were good and the jalapeño sauce had a nice kick. Potatoes are large. I would like to have each part of this dish separately. 5. Dutch baby pancake - too much butter for me, pastry was good, syrup and bacon was good. We came in for Brunch on a Sunday. The hostesses were very nice. Food: I have never been to a restaurant where all the plates for the table came out at different times. There was four of us and we all got out food at different times. I ordered the Short Rib, and got my food way after everyone else did, everyone was already done. The Short Ribs were not great, okay at best. People also ordered the burgers, one liked them, the other said it was okay. Only thing the table agreed on was the the French Fries were good, ketchup was weird. Drinks: I ordered a Margarita, that was delicious. Service: Our waiter was okay, at the end we had to wait quite a bit while they finished a conversation with the table right next to us while we just waited there, as two of us didn't even really eat our food. Every restaurant may be different but if you see plates that are barely touched, they should inquire to the issues. Maybe even not charge for the plates. Didn't apologize for the long wait between plates coming out. Lackadaisical. With all the options in Houston, do not recommend this place at all. 4.25 stars. Squable is impressive. I had an opportunity to check out the brunch here and if that is any indication of the dinner menu then this is certainly worth Houston's collective attention. Here are some of the brunch highlights: Oyster shooters. They aren't necessarily listed as such on the menu, but these Atlantic oysters paired admirably with a beet-pickle chaser. We could have downed these all afternoon. Mussel toast: This one came on a delicious buttered bread replete with massive beans and interspersed with mussels. This was a rather decadent item that I would also be inclined to order again. Fennel salad: The bright citrus flavors combined with sweet fennel were masterfully executed. We really enjoyed this one as well. Oyster Mushroom Hash: While this was not my favorite dish, it was rather heavy for a vegetarian item and possibly worth an order if you're looking for those options. French burger: This thing was pretty small, but the burger patty is fat, the lardons and sauce add depth, and the brioche bun holds up pretty well. Add in the egg for another layer of richness and you have yourself a burger! While we really enjoyed the food and I thought the service was well above standard, I did think the cocktails we tried weren't the greatest and would probably order wine on the next go round. We have gotten take out from here twice now during covid and had a good experience both times. Pick up was really convenient and easy. One time I didn't even have to call them bc they saw me pull up and had bought my food out for me. Food was really really good. Much better than when we went the first time when they had just opened. I recommend the Dutch baby pancake and focaccia dip starters. For entrees we enjoyed the chicken, pappardelle, leg of lamb and bucatini. I recommended this restaurant to my friend for Father's Day and she said they all enjoyed their food. read more

We have been there for both dinner and brunch and we still have a hard time deciding which one was better!!! Food was absolutely incredible, no matter what we ordered. We really like their style of serving as majority of the menu is based on small plates which gave us the opportunity to try a lot of different things. The service is super friendly as well and very helpful with explaining the menu to make sure that you know what you are ordering! On the top of it we really liked the atmosphere and decorations which was just a nice plus to already amazing time that we had and Squable!!! Can't wait to go back!!!! read more

Not even 'mid'. I was looking forward to trying this place bc of all the good reviews but won't be coming back. We had the Dutch baby and the French burger and both items were below average. The Dutch baby's flavor was confusing and off-putting in my opinion. It had big chunks of black pepper and lots of honey drizzled on it, the bitter/spicy and sweet wasn't great. The French burger was the biggest disappointment. It was $20 and it was literally all of 4 bites. So tiny, you could literally fit your whole hand over it. The flavor wasn't great either. It was over salted, greasy and plain aside from being smothered in cheese. Overall this place is way over priced for the underwhelming food. Save your time and money. read more

Love this quaint restaurant in the Heights. Started with the Dutch baby pancake which is so unique with the ricotta, preserved kumquat, and black pepper honey as well as the sourdough bread with sorghum butter. Added the charred broccoli for some veggies which is a lite app but the lime and mint shines through. The star of the meal was the spicy crawfish pasta. I usually stay away from ordering the chicken at any restaurant because it's usually a let down but the couple we were w talked me into it and I'm glad they did! Would recommend. The caviar tater tots were pretty overpriced for the product. I'd order them again if they didn't have caviar (= cheaper). Burger was average, not my favorite in houston, but the fries were amazing!! No picture included but we cleaned the plate. Dumplings remind me of tortellini in brodo, one of my favorite dishes. Dessert bread was great, not too sweet. First I want to say our service here is really phenomenal. Everything felt well organized, especially during a busy brunch. Their sourdough bread served with olive oil and dukkah |5/5. -nice crust to the sourdough, lovely tang. I'd happily pay for a loaf of their bread. Dutch Baby 4/5 -Tasty, but I did expect it to be more tender. Spiced Carrots - 5/5 - I was really impressed by the carrots texture, al dente is the best way to say it. Soften but with snap still. Heirloom Radish and Apples 4/5 -I was a little sad that the radishes didn't have a sharper flavor. So the blue cheese took over a little bit. Carbonara 4.5/5 - Pasta perfectly al dente. A sexy egg yolk ready to be popped. The bacon is perfectly cooked, although I think it could be cut a little smaller so to mix in the dish more evenly. Went to Squable a few months ago and had an amazing experience. The restaurant is in the heart of the Heights. Valet is available. There is a small interior and also seating outside in a covered area, which is where I sat. Service was great -- the server was really knowledgeable about the menu and was able to provide us with suggestions. I tried the following dishes: Homemade Straciatella Cheese (confit tomato, olive oil, herbs, crackers) (4.5/5) Focaccia (spiced carrot spread, za'atar, spicy green zhug) (4/5) Roasted Vegetable Bolognese (bucatini, chickpeas, pecorino) (5/5): Absolutely amazing dish. A must order. The bolognese was so savory and complex, and went so well with the pasta, which was perfectly cooked. I loved this dish and cannot wait to return to order it again. I think a 4.5 stars is very accurate for Squable - in the old space that used to be Southern Goods, you walk in and are reminded of other restaurants in the city.. the square-ish layout with the big windows and the modern/rustic decor. It totally transported me to Coltivare, or something along those lines, because the space is so similar. It was actually very nostalgic feeling because I felt like I've been here before! We had reservations and were seated at the bar - make reservations cause the space is small and it got pretty busy! The server/bartender was attentive and very friendly, though we left us halfway through our service and didn't tell us the server was changing! But both servers were great, so no complaints there! We ordered the mojito and it was refreshing and delicious! Just how I like my drinks, delicious and not tasting like alcohol, but then it hits you and you're like WTF happened? I only had 1 drink and a glass of wine?! =) Now the food, I will come back here for the Bucatini alone! Tuscan kale makes up the green, with an octopus and pork ragu, and some serrano peppers for some heat. And boy that heat does catch up with you, so be careful if you're heat sensitive! The flavors were divine, the octopus cooked perfectly and the pasta is fantastic! I can eat this over and over again and not get tired of it. I want some more as I speak. 5/5 My 2nd favorite dish of the night was the Tartine of Cucumbers and Salmon Roe.. The cucumbers make it so refreshing, because without it, it'll just be a rich buttery goodness. Yes, bread and butter is good but the cucumbers make the tartine stand out. That salmon roe adds so much to the flavor that burst in your mouth. A very elevated refreshing smoked salmon like spread, but so much better. 5/5 Next on the list comes the Raw Atlantic Oysters - refreshing, served cold and with mignonette and pickles! Exactly what you would expect of raw oysters! 4/5 We also had the Gnocchetti - It's meant to be the pasta version of a baked potato and the chef recommending building each bite on your fork. The gnocchi was cooked well - it came with really crispy bacon bits, cheese, and butter. I thought the flavors were lacking in this dish because you really only get flavor from the bacon. Not my favorite pasta dish offered. 3/5 And lastly, we had the French Cheese Burger - French because of the gooey raclette on top served with a stout beef patty, butter, pickles and fries. Boy was this burger greasy! The cheese sauce was good but the greasiness was overwhelming and the cheese sauce overwhelmed the stout patty. Was tender but not my favorite cheese burger. It is half off at the bar after 9pm, but I would probably not get this again. 2/5 Overall, I really enjoyed my experience here and the first few dishes we had were amazing! Though the last few were just ok, I think we had such a great experience, we wouldn't hesitant to come back - especially for our favorite dishes! read more

If anyone asks me where to eat in Houston, I say Squable first. Squable is incredibly consistent when it comes to attention to detail yet I always find something that pleasantly surprises me. During my last visit, it was the pickled celery that comes with Terry's martini and the whipped buttermilk? in the sweet potatoes. I'm sad to say I think I've found my favorite cocktail, the Dusty Phoenix, but I will try my hardest to try more of the cocktails! As far as the food; you can't go wrong. The mussel bread and sweet potatoes hit every note you want. The breads in the dishes are perfect. Even the texture of the beans are outstanding. I've been here three times - first was a 4.5, second was a 5, and third was a 4. This restaurant is so special to me - it doesn't try to go overboard with experimentation or fusion. It offers you flavor profiles that are just GOOD - plain and simple. I can't emphasize enough how perfect their pastas are, mostly in terms of texture but also flavor overall. Was underimpressed by some popular items like the Dutch baby (see photos for commentary) and veg bolognese. Fav items might be the panna cotta and carrot spread. They change their menu often, and as far as my experience has gone, I think I prefer fall items better. Underwhelming. I visited Squable twice. The first time was in a lovely summer evening. We had not done any reservations, and the wait list was over an hour long. The hostess suggested that we wait at the back patio, which was a bad idea. The temperature was unbearable and we were basically sweating our lives away. The drinks were mediocre. We gave up waiting and headed to a different restaurant. The second time was a winter evening. We also did not make reservations. The hostess told us she had space at the outside patio. We asked if a heater would be available, and she confirmed. Once four of us were seated, we asked them to move the heater to seat the fifth person in our party. They told us it would be a fire hazard, and removed the heater altogether. We were freezing. The waiter came and introduced himself. He told us he would give us a few minutes. 20 minutes passed, and the waiter finally returned. We ordered the sourdough bread, which was okay, and the baby Dutch pancake, which was quite delicious. We also ordered the shrimp and beef appetizers, which were tasty but minuscule. We continued with pasta with bernaise sauce - tasty but very small portion, and the pasta with pumpkin and potato - pretty good. The chicken main was sad - overly salty chicken pieces over frisee, and the pumpkin main tasted of an old person's perfume. It rained during our meal. The patio is covered, but rain poured over us regardless. We had to finish our dinner frozen wet, at the adjacent outdoor bar because the tables were unworkable. They could tone it down about three clicks, and it would be perfect and everybody could hear it and it would still be loud. We all shared. Oysters, mussels on toast all were delicious but the winner was the broccoli, Frankly, that's the best broccoli I've ever eaten in my life and I wish I could've licked the plate. The dumplings are good. The soup broth with the dumplings was really good. The leeks were good but the least favorite of everybody. For the mains, we had the vegetable lasagna that was good the duck which didn't look that good to me, but everybody liked it OK . Steak and lobster took forever to get out. We were way done with dinner when it finally came out. Everybody who ate it enjoyed it I had to save room for dessert. We ordered all three desserts, and all of them were delicious. Wowie!!!!!!! Where do I start? This place is right up there with my t. Rex review. We are vegetarian and this is everything we ordered... First off- we are indian so we asked for a side of serranos and they happily chopped some up =) Dutch cake sub ham for avacado- 4/5 soooo tasty. Cheese on there was almost runny like an egg that made it even better. Sweet potato, extra crispy without pork - 6/5 oh my lordie that was soooo delish. The sour cream was minimal and the actual flavor bursts out Fusili 3/5 very very good. Bland but still tasty. Great accompaniment to our next order Veggie bolognese - 5/5 soooo tasty, complex and flavorful. The best dish next to sweet potato. We asked for it spicy and they happily made it Rice pudding 5/5 so much texture I loved it!!!!
