The pretzels are delicious, hopefully they won't always be such a hassle to get! I arrived five minutes after they opened and stood in line for 25 minutes. When I got inside, they were already out of two of the flavors I wanted. I pointed out that they had been open for half and hour and, instead of an apology for the inconvenience, I got a perky "Yeah, it's crazy!" The second person said that one customer had bought all of the stock of one type. Crazy indeed! It does seem insane to me to sell all of one thing to a single customer when you have 40 people standing outside who might want some, too!!! I'm told this started at a farmer's market, so maybe they don't understand that when people come to a store, they expect you to have what you say you have. A couple of pointers for a storefront business: 1. Out of respect for the people who stand in the blazing sun for your product, maybe put a limit on the number of one type of pretzel that any one customer can buy; or 2. Make enough to last for the paltry 3 hours that you are open. 3. Run more than one checkout stand. This way, people won't have to stand in line so long, and maybe they will be in a better mood if you they find out you haven't done 1 or 2. I want to support a small business in my community, so I'll come back, but only once more. Love a good pretzel so was very excited to try Squabisch but wanted to wait until the lines had died down a bit. Went on a Sunday afternoon around 2pm and was delighted to find no line and nothing had sold out. We ordered the funghi, the rueben and a chocolate and raspberry. The funghi was fine, but was far more cheese than mushroom so didn't have much mushroom flavor. The Rueben was delicious as was the chocolate and raspberry. I've posted about Squabisch before but I had to shout out the one I had today. They had a unagi and furikake pretzel and I'll admit, I was scared, but I love unagi and pretzels so I took a shot. After receiving the pretzels I was planning on sitting on a curb and batting away the local pigeons while I eat my twisted bread snakes but to my surprise the pretzels weren't even warm! I was looking forward to the warmth because God knows I don't get any at home. So, instead of settling, I took my pretzels all the way back to that 2-bedroom freezer and threw them in the microwave. And after ALL THAT I finally took a bite of each and I must say they actually weren't half bad.. 4/5. Then my dog ate the rest of em when I went to the bathroom and had the worst smelling gas from the cheesy one for the rest of the evening --so if anyone wants to adopt a stinky, back-stabbing mutt I'll trade the little bastard for a mushroom pretzel. read more

Meh - I guess it's different strokes for different folks. We waited in line for about 15 minutes and bought 8 different pretzels, eager to dive into the taste sensation that everyone raves about. Sadly, our tastebuds weren't impressed. The pretzels were mediocre, dry, and not flavorful. In central Pennsylvania (an area heavily influenced by German settlers and Amish traditions), I've had truly fresh pretzels (folded before your eyes and straight out of the oven fresh) and those were fabulous. I was hoping for something similar here, but not at all. When they say "fresh" I suspect they mean "made this morning" fresh... which is ok, but it's not the fresh I was hoping for. I'm glad everyone else loves them, but for me and my family it just made us long for our next trip back to Pennsylvania. read more

The pretzels from Squabisch are remarkably good. After reading about the bakery online, I swung by and picked up eleven pretzels for the office while out on a lunch errand. In an office of about a dozen people the pretzels all disappeared within a couple of hours. I was amazed. At times I bring bagels into the office in the morning. Lots of hype on this place. Our experience:meh. We arrived at 2:30pm on a Sunday and they were sold out of almost everything. We did score a Asiago pretzel that was dry and unflavorable. The Asiago didn't really bring anything to the party. The customer service was almost nonexistent. There was a long line, it went fast, but the staff was pretty exhausted and indifferent once you entered the shop. Maybe a bad day? I hope so based on the reviews I've seen elsewhere. read more

I love the fact that this is a recipe that his Schwaebische mother taught him to make : ) And then he adds the creative bonus ingredients! Uli's stand was easy to spot, right at the entrance of the pub. All of his pretzels are displayed on a metal rod stand, along with extra pretzels in little baskets on the table. I picked up two Original Pretzels to enjoy and chatted a bit with Uli. I found the Original Pretzels to be toothsome; quite nice and chewy and dense. I added some of my own mustard and I was in heaven. One caveat is that they were so good that I wish they were bigger because I've been craving these tasty German pretzels ever since! What a confusing experience. I came in around 4 pm. Despite being quite friendly and chatty with the couple in line ahead of me, person behind the counter gave me a blank stare when I greeted them. Ordered a brat pretzel and jalapeno pretzel. Person asked me whether I wanted them heated up, I said yes, and they went to the back to heat them up. A few moments later, they returned with cold hard items stating that they had turned off the oven an hour ago, so maybe they were "warm" but the oven was heating. Huh? If you knew the oven was off, why did you offer to warm the items? Could you have told me this when I asked? Tried to be gracious to the person upon leaving and also got a lukewarm response. These pretzels are the real deal. We loaded up and got the quail egg and Asiago, Swiss/gruyere roll, mushroom, bacon/cheese, salmon/lox, and standard salt. We loved every single one! We ate them all on the walk home - they were too good to stop once we started. The rolls were a new experience for me.
