An Interesting Atmosphere, but Disappointing Service and Inconsistencies…read more I visited the Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar inside the Fairmont San Francisco for a double date this past weekend, and overall, the experience was memorable, though not necessarily for the right reasons. The Fairmont itself feels elegant and upscale. Getting to the Tonga Room involved taking an elevator down and walking through a long hallway to the check-in area. Fortunately, we had a reservation, so the check-in process was smooth, and we were seated without any issues. Upon arrival, the hostess informed us of an additional $20 per person entertainment fee. This caught me off guard, as I have rarely encountered a separate mandatory charge for entertainment at a bar or restaurant. Fortunately, we were not charged the entertainment fee in the end, as the band left in the middle of our visit. While I appreciated not having to pay the additional charge, the situation was still unusual. The atmosphere was another mixed bag. The venue was crowded, with what looked like a pirate convention taking place inside, which certainly made for an interesting scene. The rain effect was a fun touch, and the pond added to the tropical, kitschy ambiance. Unfortunately, the music was excessively loud. Rather than feeling like a restaurant or even a relaxed bar, it felt more like being inside a nightclub. It was difficult to have a comfortable conversation with our group, which detracted from the experience of going out for a double date. The service was also somewhat frustrating. Only half of our party had arrived, as the others were still looking for parking--a familiar challenge in San Francisco. Despite explaining that we were waiting for the rest of our group, servers repeatedly approached us to ask whether we were ready to order. We had to explain several times that we needed more time since we couldn't place an order for everyone who hadn't arrived yet. A little more patience and attentiveness would have made the experience feel much more welcoming. Two other details stood out during our visit. First, the Painkiller cocktails appeared to be served in two different glass sizes, despite being the same drink order. I sincerely hope the actual pours were consistent, but the difference in presentation raised questions about portion sizes and consistency. When ordering the same cocktail, customers should reasonably expect comparable servings. Second, our table was given plastic cups for water, while other tables appeared to have glass water glasses. This inconsistency was surprising for an establishment with such an upscale setting. While plastic cups may be practical under certain circumstances, the difference between tables was noticeable and left me wondering why the experience wasn't more consistent for all guests. Ultimately, the Tonga Room has a distinctive atmosphere, and the indoor rain and tropical pond are undeniably memorable features. However, the excessively loud music, persistent ordering interruptions, and inconsistencies in drink presentation and water service made the overall experience underwhelming. The $20-per-person entertainment fee was also an unusual aspect of the evening, especially considering that the band left partway through our visit, although we were ultimately not charged for it. I appreciate the novelty and history of the venue, but the atmosphere alone wasn't enough to outweigh these shortcomings. For a place housed within the Fairmont, I expected a more polished and cohesive guest experience. Unfortunately, I don't see myself returning anytime soon.

There always seems to be some kind of upbeat musical entertainment going on when go there. Last week we had a college graduation party for our youngest daughter. We opted to have Wise Girls cater for us. The food was ready on time. It was delicious and the guests loved it. We will definitely be going to Wise Girls again and use them again for our catering in their area. Thank you again Wise Girls for such a great job and taking a huge amount of stress off of us. Gave the soup a second bite just to be sure and then put it at the end of the table to get rid of it. No thank you!! The salmon was delicious, the salad itself was basic but you really can't go wrong with a basic caesar anyway. I wasn't disappointed at all. My boyfriend had the lamb chops, which he was left really unsatisfied with. Again, not much flavor on the chops themself, they were SUPER dry and chewy. Definitely could've benefited from a sauce of some sort - the one it did have was scarce and watery. The mixed veggies around the plate were boring and tasteless, but this seems like a common theme here. Would we return? Maybe for breakfast, but this kind of scarred us to ever make the trip out there again. We really appreciated them saving us such a wonderful table with a view. Our waitress Sara, came by and brought us menus and introduced herself. I decided to get the famous crab sandwich. I got the half portion with the side salad and a cup of clam chowder. My husband ordered one of the specials, which was the chicken piccata as well as a cup of clam chowder. I also ordered an iced tea. Our clam chowders arrived first. It was so good. We both enjoyed them. It had a lot of clams in it. It was delicious and comforting. Our entrees came out shortly after our chowders. Thank goodness I ordered the half portion of the crab sandwich because it was huge. It was full of crab and it was delicious. The sourdough bread had been grilled with butter and the crab had a very light amount of mayo, as it should, so you can taste the fresh crab. I noticed a lot of people leaving negative reviews that the crab had no flavor or it was bland. This is exactly how you're supposed to enjoy a fresh crab sandwich. I…read morewas excited about the idea of a small intimate music venue where you can feel close to the artist without being surrounded by a massive crowd, and I was also very excited to see the particular artist that I had tickets for. Sweetwater is charming and the decor is lovely. I also really appreciate that it's a non-profit that is dedicated to supporting live music, arts, and music education in the community. There really is a lot to like about this place and the headliner that I came to see was absolutely fantastic. The overall experience was far less enjoyable than I had hoped. I was probably among the first 30 or so people to enter the venue because I arrived early as it was my first visit. It's a ways away from where I live and I wasn't sure how long it was going to take to get there. Also, there is no dedicated venue parking so I was worried about finding a spot. Guests here have to find street parking wherever they can in the downtown area and walk to the venue. Still, even though I was one of the first to enter, a woman ahead of us had already claimed every available stole by placing jackets and purses and scarves on them. Seating is extremely limited with just a few stools along the wall and some places at the bar. There is also a designated ADA bench style seating area against one wall and those spots are reserved with signs for the people who need them. As a result, I ended up standing for the entirety of the time I was there (which totaled more than 4 hours) despite arriving early. I was aware that it was standing room only so I was prepared for that. However, it was really frustrating to see that the majority of the people who ended up using those seats didn't come until later in the evening, after the opening act, and only used them briefly because once the headliner came out they pushed their way through the crowd to the front of the stage. My frustration comes from the fact that I had to watch others stand for hours with nowhere to sit who were clearly struggling to do so. The crowd management was anotherissue. People were standing in walkways and climbing onto the sides of the wheelchair ramp, even sitting on the stage. There was no effort from security to keep the aisles clear or discourage people from occupying and appropriate spaces. The room became hot, crowded and chaotic and I nearly had an altercation with another attendee who was repeatedly bumping into me while dancing wildly. I understand that Sweetwater cannot control their patrons behaviors, but even a venue this size still needs crowd management and accessible walkways. Standing shoulder to shoulder in a hot room for hours with no reasonable way to sit down and maintain a little breathing room made it difficult to relax and enjoy the evening. What made the crowds behavior particularly disappointing was the artist I had come to see. Their message is rooted in kindness, compassion and making the world a better place. Watching fellow audience members behave so selfishly seeming without any consideration for anyone around them, felt especially at odds with that message. Live music should bring people together not become an exercise in competing for space while disregarding everybody else's experience. I want to make it clear that my disappointment is not with a performance which was wonderful or with the idea behind Sweetwater itself. The intimate atmosphere, character and non-profit mission are all things worth celebrating. I genuinely wanted to love Sweetwater and I wish my first visit had let me feeling differently. Unfortunately, the physical discomfort and crowd chaos overshadowed much of what could have been a wonderful evening. As much as I appreciate what this venue represents, I would be hesitant to return here for any show but hopefully you can see by the high rating I have given them that it's really something people should experience and decide for themselves. I wish this venue continued success and I am glad I got the opportunity to experience it.

Such a sweet moment for Grateful Dead fans with little kiddos ~ lotsa little "deadheads". There's a bar/restaurant called the Rock & Rye Café if in the mood for a meal pre/post show, and we learned you can order at the restaurant and bring food over to the Music Hall as well. This venue is essentially standing room only, but we emailed ahead of time for ADA accommodations and seating for grandparents (check the website under 'Frequently Asked Questions' for direct email). There's parking in downtown Mill Valley..we parked around the corner and walked around window shopping pre-show. There's also other cool eateries and drinking holes to enjoy downtown too. In the venue itself there is a bar that served both great Bloody Mary's and mocktail options too. Fun staff and the show was equally as cool + interactive. There were nice Grateful Dead handkerchiefs for sale, and all in all, honestly would return for a kiddo or (adult) show. It was so special to introduce a few generations at one time to this genre of music in such an iconic spot and staple to the area. Well done!

They had a final closing party this past Saturday, and we knew we had to stop by for few last drinks and bites. It was low key kinda sad as we had to say goodbye to some of our favorites. Over the years (past decade or so now) we've gotten to know the staff and this spot has been a spot where we knew we'd get great service, good convos, and of course tasty wings, totchos, and $1 oysters on Thursdays. Shout out to Matt, Tracy, Jeremy, and their entire team for the amazing hospitality over the years. Paina closing is a reminder that it's important to not take your favorite restaurants/bars for granted because you never know when that final day will eventually come and when it does it comes way too fast. I hope the team reads this as I just want to say THANK YOU for everything and that you will be missed. The memories and moments I've gotten to enjoy here over the years won't be forgotten!

Great spot for wedding rehearsal dinners, high school reunions, company parties, etc. Stimulating conversation abounds and a lot of laughter bouncing off the walls. A great place to see sporting events, especially the Warriors. Very nice patio as well with big umbrellas and fire pit. There is an odd set up as you have to go to the bar to get your drinks each time you want something. The downside could be long lines as they don't have table service but they bring you stuff. They don't take orders from the table. Some kind of crowd control thing? Or mis management or local rules? At any rate, it is a fun hang out with killer bartenders and servers. I went to see the visual kei, Japanese rock band, JILUKA, here with my boyfriend and we lined up beforehand for VIP. The staff walked out, showed us the rules for the VIP that was printed on a piece of paper and explained it to us too, they walked down the line to scan us in as well. Venue itself is pretty neat. The front part is a bar area with lots of tables and seating and outdoor seating as well. Since it was before the concert, we were able to enjoy some food and drinks from the bar and kitchen. It was also during their Happy Hour too which was great. My boyfriend got a drink (not sure what it was, but it was refreshing and citrus tasting?) and we shared a Bavarian soft pretzel with mustard and we got the white cheddar dipping sauce added on for a nominal fee. One of the best pretzels that I've ever had! Deliciously soft interior, nice chew to the texture of the exterior. Comes out hot, warm and delicious. Great on it's own, but great with the sauces too. Perfect dash of the coarse salts on it. I'd get this again for sure and would like to one day order more from their menu. The live house music area is in the back in a separate room. Restrooms were clean too. Enough space for the bands to sell their merch and do a meet and greet. Wasn't a huge venue and insane turn out, but it fit the crowd and I liked how intimate setting was. I was around 3-4 rows from the front and even with a mosh pit and wall of death, I was able to shift around and see the band more clearly. Easy visibility no matter where I was shifted around. Lighting was pretty good and made it easy to take pictures and video. I think the vocals were a bit more muffled than the rest of the band members playing, but that might just be the set up more than anything. Of all the venues I stopped by for the week, this had the most approachable and friendly staff. Greeted going and as we were leaving too. I didn't overheat at this one either, so the AC was A+!! There's paid parking nearby but if you read the signs and go around, you can get free street parking too. Bring more J-rock/over seas acts here, it was so good!

They had a DJ booth but it was early in the day so it was not being utilized. They have a secret speakeasy downstairs that's only open for four about 4 hours a few nights a week. TLDR: Good place to grab an inexpensive drink during happy hour downtown Hayward.

We'll return at some point to try it. We entered the lounge through a very cool keyhole entryway, and found a very spacious lounge with plenty of seating. The bartender greeted us promptly. They had happy hour going on, and the prices were decent. There is a food vendor called Tailfeather Kitchen in the same space, around the corner from the bar, with a pretty extensive menu of offerings. We ordered a margherita pizza, and it was tasty. Always great to see a bar that serves food. Upbeat music and a fun atmosphere. We had a nice time and would return. Looking forward to trying the speakeasy one day.
