    Reheat instructions

Thank you so much Squabisch for making our Thanksgiving complete! Always looking forward to grabbing a pretzel to-go from the Kensington Farmer's Market, we recently saw your social media post on tiny Turkey day pretzels for the family and wow, who knew something that small could bring forth a smile so big! Making the trek on the day before Thanksgiving to your shop on Solano, what an amazing feeling to walk in and be greeted by the delicious smells of pretzels baking, salt, and butter. Such a fun array of sweet and savory pretzels, I was on a mission to only get the one thing I came for ~ the turkey pretzel. The amazing staff told me they had ONE left and it had my name on it! I let them know it was for the cutest little guy celebrating his first Turkey Day. I loved the to-go bags also, stating the best way to re-heat your pretzel/keep it fresh if not devouring it right away. I can honestly say by staying true to those instructions, the goods truly stayed fresh until the next day! Looking forward to trying more of your in-house yummies and maybe signing up for a pretzel making class! Thank you again for making our first Thanksgiving as a family so special!

    The Reuben Pretzel!

I really enjoy the weekly "special pretzel"! Don't get me wrong, the other pretzels of many variations, are simply the best in the area! The Pretzel Brat was most memorable as what I thought would be a snack was more of a guilty pleasure!

I recently had the pleasure of finding Squabisch during a stroll down Solano Ave. in Albany, and overall, I had a great experience. The restaurant focuses on pretzels, and they are delicious. The menu is limited but well-curated and I particularly enjoy the ham and cheese option. They do run out quickly, so come early! I give it 4/5 starts because the salting of the pretzels is inconsistent. Sometimes it's a little too heavy and other times it feels like they forgot to add it. Logistics: There is a good amount of street parking on Solano Ave., but spots fill quickly, so you might have to park a little further and walk a little, but well worth it!

Today I paid my first visit to the brick and mortar store. I was taking something to be framed at Sticks, which is right next door, and lucked into the parking space right in front of Squabisch, next to their parklet. My attention was caught by a pretzel dough sign hanging in the window reading "Hella Kamala" so I knew I had to come visit after I finished at Sticks. When Squabisch opened here there were long lines, one of the things that deterred me, but there was no line today. There was a man waiting outside for his sandwich to be made and a family w/ two children ordering in front of me. I hadn't intended to buy anything because I was full from lunch at Bowl'd but when I saw the Castroville pretzel, which contains chopped artichokes, I had to have it and then when I saw the bratwurst wrapped in pretzel dough I had to have that too. Sabine helped me and she was lovely. I commented on the "Hella Kamala" sign and she said they had had a fundraiser a couple of weeks ago and that was part of that. They also made t-shirts which said "Hella Harris Totally Tim 2024", which I loved. The shirts were white, which I normally don't wear, but I may go back and buy one just to support. Tonight I had the Castroville pretzel for dinner, along w/ Picnic salads and the leftover banchan I brought home from Bowl'd. I'm inclined towards unusual combination of things for dinner. I warmed the pretzel in the oven and it was marvelous. Tomorrow for lunch I will have the bratwurst and am looking forward to that. If I do go back for a shirt I have no doubt I will get another Castroville pretzel if they have them. Addendum: I had the bratwurst pretzel for lunch today, as you can see from the photo, and it was delicious! I can see more of these in my future. Not often, but often enough. As planned, I returned before going to TSH this afternoon for another Castroville pretzel and for a shirt. Turns out the way they handle it is that you make a donation to the campaign, show them your receipt and they give you a shirt. Well, I have made a donation already. I told Sabine I wasn't that interested in the shirt, just in supporting them, because I don't wear white shirts anyway. Black, or other colors, but not white. She went in the back, came back w/ a black shirt that was just my size and gave it to me! You can see the photos below. I will wear it w/ pleasure.

I come here often for a quick snack since it's close to home. Pretzels are soft, fresh, and tasty. I appreciated how they were able to make a special, big "17" pretzel and smaller ones for my son's birthday since he's not a cake person but loves pretzels. I emailed the order in and picked up a couple days later. It was quick and easy and a big hit for the birthday boy and guests. Thanks! We'll be back again.

Squabisch opened in La Bedaine's space several times a week. their niche is German style baked pretzels. take out only. offerings: classic bagels, sweet & savory bagels, new menu every week posted on window. eats: vegan with salt(4) -don't remember eating it. fughi thyme (5) -firm crunchy texture, bold notes of crimini mushrooms, thyme & mozzarella cheese. peach crumble (5) -same crunchy texture with baked on peach flavored particles on bottom. has flavor essence of peach cobbler. crusts: -unique tasting bakes. goes good with german styled mustard, stout/porter beers. tastier than a bagel not as utilitarian-doubtful use as sandwich vehicle.

Amazing pretzels! I placed an advanced order for a party and they were ready and very freshly made! My guests LOVED them! I hope to order more soon

The pandemic has yielded at least one good thing. It forced owner Uli Elser to drop out of a music industry career he grew tired of and pursue his passion - making hand-crafted pretzels based on his mother's recipe. The rest of us have become the beneficiaries of his professional redirection because they are tasty creations even if they dance on the edge of a pretzel and veer slightly into fresh rolls. That's because he adds milk and butter to the standard bread flour and water found in the ballpark variety. Purists may balk, but are you going to challenge a Schwabisch German mother? Jamie W. and I decided to pay a Sunday visit to Elser's small bakery storefront on Solano Avenue. There were about ten people in line, which was a lot less than the number waiting on their opening weekend. A neighboring store even had a sidewalk chalk message to not block their entrance. While there was a menu of choices in the window, it took looking at the pretzels in the display case to make up our minds. We knew we needed to order the $4 Pretzel Classic which was sprinkled generously with Maldon salt (photo: https://bit.ly/3GEyY9U). That was definitely the right starter. We then went for the more indulgent $4.50 Asiago. It was encrusted with melted salty cheese (photo: https://bit.ly/3BbZ6Yj). Our third shared pretzel was the least pretzel-like, the $5 Pesto & Mozzarella because it tasted like a pizza with a softer crust (photo: https://bit.ly/35WRQE9). Last but certainly not least was the $8 Pretzel Brat, which was a truly German take on a bagel dog (photo: https://bit.ly/3LltAfl). It was nice to get some protein with all those carbs. I believe it was Uli's wife Sabine who happily served us, and we look forward to trying more of their endless pretzel logic. FOOD - 5 stars...really liking the variety here even if my hips didn't AMBIANCE - 4 stars...no seating, just a clean spot to order, grab and go SERVICE - 4.5 stars...very conscientious and responsive TOTAL - 5 stars...if pretzels are your passion RELATED - Strolling Solano Avenue? Chef Grace shared her knowledge freely and tailored her instruction to the cooking/experience level of each individual student. She perfectly timed the class so the Hong Kong-style egg tarts came out of the oven just as we finished enjoying our hand-made Dan Dan noodles and Hot&Sour soup.
