Overall, the food was delicious, but there were a couple of dishes that weren't quite my favorite. The kale salad and the pesto risotto were a bit too sour for my taste. Honestly everything tasted really good and the portions are INSANE, like way more than you would expect. Going to Sqirl was a bucket list item for a very long time before the jam bucket scandal came out. Glad that I've went but for a city that has so many good brunch places, Sqirl sits at a 3.5/5 star for me. The place was on a busy-ish street. No parking lot so we parked around the neighborhood and walked ~5 minutes over. The shop is divided into dine-in and to-go, the signs to differentiate them was hard to see but we eventually figured out. The shop is quite small, you stand in line to order and you get a number and find your own table. Water and utensils are self-serve as well. We sat outside. The food came out fast. The famous ricotta toast with seasonal jam (3.5/5) - the dish that made Sqirl (in)famous. It looks dreamy, thick and sweet. A bit too much for my taste after the fourth bite. The dish tasted exactly how you'd imagine it will. The jams were a bit hard to tell what they were. We were also not informed what the seasonal jams were at the time. The black sesame with lemon curd (3/5) - there's a deceitfully excessive amount of lemon curd inside the pastry. The lemon overpowered the black sesame. If you're a lemon dessert lover, this one's for you. Sorrel Pesto with Salmon (4/5 - this one was great. The salmon and vegetables were juicy and seasoned well. The only complain I have is that the salmon portion was a bit small compared to pictures. Latte was unremarkable so I wouldn't talk about it. read more

I'll start off with the good things about Sqirl. The food here was very good! The tomato jam was very sweet and the bread was super crunchy. The breakfast sandwich had a sauce that was a bit spicy but really yummy and the egg was fluffy. Now onto things that could be improved on. The wait took very long. It took about 25 mins for us to get the breakfast sandwich. People who ordered after us got all of their dishes before we did. I understand it was a Saturday and it was quite busy but it did suck seeing people get their entire order before we got one of our items. Second, the $7 bacon I added to the tomato jam was just one slice. I was expecting at least two slices. The food here was great but for the wait time and prices I would go somewhere else. This place certainly got its peak peak hype at one particular point in time that looking at the line alone felt overwhelming. Fortunately it's way more decent now even on weekend brunch time. It's obviously still busy, but amidst the chilly May grey Sunday, standing in line was certainly bearable. We placed our order than could quickly grab a seat at the front side, which was technically by the curbside, enabling you to do people-watching and just enjoying Silver Lake vibes. Amidst the wait you certainly had the option to explore their store which did offer some house-made ingredients they used for their dishes. We got their top dishes, starting with the sweet one - Toast Brioche with Ricotta and house seasonal jam. They had 4 options and you could also go for all, but my pick was the Raspberry Vanilla which I loved being so thick and I could tell had heavy fruit ratio in it. The moist airy ricotta came as right balance. The toast itself was very moist at the center but tad dry at the corner. The pesto rice to my surprise was so palatable and and refreshing with citrusy flavor and everything's on the plate just came as right complement, the poached egg, feta, and the additional sides we added - halloumi and bacon. A fantastic brunch spot that uses brown rice in their savory bowls. You feel full without being overstuffed. We got the loaded sorrel pesto rice with avocado, kale, and bacon. The kale and rice is so lemony and packed with so much flavor. We also got the "French toast" but this is not your average French toast. It's a creme brulee brioche that has been soaked in custard for 42.5 HOURS. Originally I thought that's how much this cost but luckily it's only $24. It was served piping hot but so juicy, crispy and fluffy. I've never had anything like this and it has to be the most unique French toast I have ever had. Absolutely worth it. Parking is simple and nice to walk around the neighborhood because you're going to want a little walk after this delicious meal. Ordering is at the counter and there was a line that took about ~15-20mins. They give you a number where they will bring your food out to you and they have a small indoor seating section and also a ton of outdoor seating in front of their restaurant or on the side in their patio. I've passed by Sqirl a few times only to see long lines. Thankfully we went early enough and only waited 5 minutes to order. The seating area is small, but it does have a patio which is nice. Parking might be tough but that's anywhere in LA. As for the food let's get into it: - Ricotta Toast w/ Strawberry Jam (8/10) delicious, the bread they used had good texture, and the ricotta portion was the right size. Would order again. - Fluffy Pancakes (7.5/10) Believe this is the most popular food item, as they always run out. I thought it was really good, but not the best fluffy pancake I've had. This review is for their dinner menu. What an experience, honestly loved it more than their breakfast/lunch. Our party got the chicken liver, agnolotti, chicken, steak, and asparagus. The chicken liver was served w their toasted sourdough bread and celery butter... and wow, the butter was delicious! My sister, who normally doesn't enjoy pâte, also really liked the dish. The agnolotti was superb. Definitely save some bread to dip into the butter sauce. My only gripe was that there were only 5-6 pieces of pasta. I had high expectations for the chicken since it was the most popular item on social media. It was great, but I enjoyed the steak a lot more for the main. 2 years since I've been here and this is still one of my favorite restaurants in LA! We waited in a line that started outside the restaurant. The line went by pretty slow and took about 30 minutes, but the wait is always worth it for me. I initially ordered the chicken tahini focaccia sandwich. Unfortunately, it wasn't available that day :( The employee said that out of their 4 sandwiches, they offer 3 of them on a given day. But I opted for the 1/2 & 1/2 bowl instead and was not mad about it. Any variation of the sorrel pesto rice is sooo delicious! There is a little bit of an acidic taste in the rice which I love. The textures in the bowl blend together nicely. I've actually never really eaten kale before, and the way it was prepared in this bowl made it very appetizing. It was dressed perfectly. This bowl was so filling that I couldn't even finish it! While it may seem impossible to find a table, one of the servers helps find and clean something for your party. The food service was a little bit staggered, with one of the bowls coming out much later than the rest of the food. Street parking can be difficult as it is very limited. The line is usually very long, and the wait can take quite a while. It seems like the cashier is also handling bussing duties inside, which might be why it takes longer for orders to be placed. The name of this restaurant is pretty strange, but don't let that fool you. Like the saying goes, "don't judge the book by it's cover". Established in 2011 and still going strong! Love that:-) Yesterday, my son, one of his friends and myself decided to stop by at this lovely, quaint restaurant that I have heard of, but have never tried before. It's a bit pricy, but the benefits and quality of the food is totally worth the buck. Got a warm welcome from Danilo G and he took our order at the counter. After finding a seat in the somewhat medium size restaurant, another employee brought out our order. We all ordered different things. My son got the New School with extra crispy ham and strawberry/peach jam, his friend got the Buckwheat Pancake and I got an Avocado Toast (add fried egg). I don't know why they had to charge for the egg. We all loved our food and didn't get anything to drink besides water. We also shared the Double Stack Pancakes with maple syrup and butter. They have extensive menu options to choose from and are only open for breakfast/brunch/lunch and close at 4pm. Ambiance is comfortable, and chill. It's only street parking around here. Sqirl is one of the tastiest breakfast options in Silver Lake, as well as one of the most trendy and expensive. The lines here can get quite long so I suggest stopping in early. They have three different seating areas, one small area inside where you order, outside on the side of the building, and their largest seating area is directly out front on the sidewalk. Parking in this area can be a little bit tricky, there isn't a dedicated parking lot. It will be street parking only. The staff that we encountered was very friendly, but the ordering process is extremely slow, for some reason this line only crawls by, and everyone behind the counter taking orders does not seem to be in any type of rush. The menu does have a lot of great options on it. We started off with the Yogurt Parfait Bowl and we thought it was terrific. Everything was just really fresh and well balanced, and we were very happy with it. We also ordered the Ricotta Toast and jam and decided to do all strawberry because the other flavors did not sound nearly as interesting. This too was very good and I would get it for the strawberry jam alone. For my breakfast, I chose the Silky Soft French Eggs and really liked them. The goat cheese in the center is what made it for me and overall they was just really good. the ricotta toast definitely carried this whole meal. the ricotta itself was super duper fluffy and i loved that part so much. i would probably skip the apricot spread next time though because it was a bit bitter. the toast was a little dry, but it was also a thicccc piece of bread so i kinda get it. i did like the other jams though, i think it was strawberry and blackberry, and those paired way better. major chefs kiss to the caramelized vanilla latte. the vanilla bean flavor was really prominent and smooth, sooo good. the sorrel pesto rice was not it for me. the rice was kind of lukewarm and there was barely any pesto flavor. it mostly just tasted like dill. i usually like sour savory foods but this one just didn't hit. the hash was really good though. perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and the in house sauce had a nice smoky flavor that made it even better. not sure if i would reorder it only because i want to try other things next time. also it's an order first then find a table kind of place, just a heads up. overall some hits and misses but definitely worth trying for the ricotta toast and latte. read more

Sqirl has been around awhile (2011), but it took their recent foray into dinner service to finally bring me in. Well known for their breakfast and lunch offerings as well as their house-made jams, Sqirl is a very popular spot in Virgil Village. It survived a "Jam Gate" episode almost 6 years ago, and I remember chef/owner Jessica Koslow had a companion restaurant at the Santa Monica Proper Hotel for awhile. This slighty gentrified area can also be gritty, and parking is a real challenge. Sqirl is a combination restaurant, take-out place and market with 2 separate sections. The restaurant has a small indoor dining space (basically one communal table and counter seating facing the wall), front sidewalk seating and a small patio along the side. The setting sun was an issue for most of the patio tables during my visit. Daytime service may be fast-casual, while dinner has tableside wait service. The dinner menu is quite fun and unique. I ordered 4 dishes, and there are many more I'd like to try in the future. Here's what I ordered: 1) Chicken Liver $21. A pretty traditional chicken liver pate, but topped with a bright green compound celery butter and served with schmaltz-grilled bread (the same bread served with their bread service). So pretty and delish! 2) Agnolotti $26. Another pretty dish, beet-striped pasta filled with smoked beet with a ricotta whey butter sauce that I found bracingly acidic. Ate all the pasta, but not all of the sauce. 3) Chicken $38. When online food sites talk about the resurgence of ordering chicken for dinner, this dish is invariably mentioned. Kind of a take on Zuni Cafe in San Francisco's famous chicken with bread salad, Sqirl's version is a Koji-cured half chicken (boneless except for the wing) with bagna cauda sauce served over braised Swiss chard panzanella, with a charred lemon alongside. Very deep and savory, and a generous portion. 4) Onion rings $16. These and the creamed spinach are more recent additions to the menu. The rings have a masa battered and are served with an avocado dip that I found quite acidic. The rings were tasty but dark, fried a bit too long I fear. If I had room for dessert, I would have ordered the sticky toffee madeleines. Maybe next time. Overall a unique and tasty meal. read more

I've been going to Sqirl's lunch and brunch for years and the huge menu means I get to try new things almost every time, but that being said, my favorites are the yueben (a vegetarian take on the classic rueben sandwich), and the french toast (which is so massive that I can eat it the next morning for breakfast!). I also love having their seasonal shrub beverages - especially as a fan of komboucha. I was thrilled when they finally opened for dinner and was NOT disappointed! I wanted to spend the day in LA with my friend and we decided to try out Sqirl for brunch because their menu looked super unique and interesting! I was overwhelmed with how many different things I wanted to try but ended up going with the vegetable omelette. I did not think to ask what kind of vegetables were on it and it ended up being mushrooms, only mushrooms, and lots of them. I like mushrooms but unfortunately I do not love them so that might have been my bad for not checking what might come on the omelette. If you are a mushroom lover, maybe you would have liked it but unfortunately it was not for me. As for my friend's meal, she got the Loaded Sorrel Pesto Rice. She said that she liked it but that it was pretty salty. The hash brown that we got to split was really good though!! Very crispy and tasty. It's been years since I've been here (since the jam mold / rat / unauthorized kitchen reports 2021) but I needed to eat Shakshuka so thought I'd give Squirl another shot. I hope they have changed their ways because the food is so good!! And the staff are so nice! The shakshuka was so flavorful, and I loved the yogurt component. The most exciting part was getting a 3 foot baguette on top! Highly recommend this dish!! Seating is kind of wild if it's busy, but thankfully on a week day there was no wait and a number of tables available. The cardamom cinnamon roll was one of the best pastries I've ever had, and the staff working were really kind and even brought out a bday candle Turmeric juice was fresh and refreshing! Sqirl has a horrifically chaotic seating situation but devastatingly delicious dishes, hence my repeated visits. I have not once visited Sqirl without there being an atrociously long line to order. What's more, after you order, it is impossible to find seating. It usually takes me a solid half hour of waiting around to find an empty table. That being said, I keep going back because I enjoy Sqirl's food so much. They're definitely a bit pricey but reasonable for LA. The salmon sorrel pesto rice is perfectly seasoned. The divinely seared salmon is paired with a contrasting honey-citrus broccolini and marinated kale. Fresh dill and crispy onions add even more nuance in flavor. The ricotta toast is Sqirl's showstopper. I keep coming back because of this toast. The housemade brioche toast is decadent and rich. The ricotta is so creamy and offers the perfect level of sweetness. Perfection continues with a topping of four seasonal jams. one of la's popular casual brunch spots. they have an open seating area and it was a little hot as the summer temperatures are starting to make their presence. rather than a sit down restaurant, everything is ordered at the counter and supposedly it gets even busier on the weekends. luckily, i came on a weekday so there was nothing to worry about. also parking can be a challenge as there is only street parking. i ordered both the ricotta jam toast and the crispy rice bowl with "the works". as i have tried a ricotta brioche toast somewhere else, i think it's safe to say that for both times, this combination was not suited for me. the slight saltiness and thick density of the ricotta takes over my mouth along with thick brioche slice that is more dry than moist, sucking away any moisture that the ricotta had not already extinguished. brioche toast seems only suitable as a french toast for me but i'm sure there are other people that this dish appeals to, given its reputation as a highly recommended dish. the crispy rice bowl was a lot more enjoyable and i feel like there was a spice or seasoning that made me reminisce southeast asian cuisines (i wanna say thai?). i love how the rice is crispy because it adds such a nice texture and elevates the dish. it may be salty for some but i think it was a very satiating and healthy meal to start the day (also inspires me to try to make it at home). read more

The food at Sqirl was a tasty and fresh spin on classic breakfast/brunch foods. It's a pretty large menu and we got to try a couple of different things: Sorrel Pesto Rice Bowl is a bright, punchy, lemony rice bowl. While the flavor of this is unique, I did find the lemon (from the sorrel) very strong and would not be able to eat an entire bowl of this if this was the only thing I ordered. The Big Hash Brown w/ Smoked Tomato Ketchup is my new standard for hash browns - crunchy on the outside and pillowy on the inside, topped with flaky salt and chives. Ricotta Toast with the 4 jams is a good sweet treat amongst the savory. I can't say I could definitely identify each of the four jams, but they were all packed with flavor. The Jamon Pepin is what I would call an improved ham and cheese sandwich: made with house ham and a baguette that's fluffy on the inside and shatteringly crunchy on the outside. The "Shaq" is their version of Shakshuka. I can't say I've had a ton of shakshuka in the past, but their version is made with madras curry and has flavors reminiscent of chicken tikka masala. It's served with a comically large baguette and was my favorite thing we tried. I'd be eager to come back and try more of the menu! The logistics of this place are a bit more challenging. They can get BUSY and you order at the register and seat yourself after ordering. I'm not a huge fan of this, because you run the risk of having placed your order and not having a place to sit. You can't sit until you've placed an order and are waiting for food, so no holding tables, and we did see staff enforcing this rule as best they could. I'll admit, I was a little hesitant to visit Sqirl given the... sticky scandal a few years back... but I am so glad I did! Despite coming on a Monday I was met with a line but everyone got their orders in relatively quickly. Staff were friendly, quick and attentive. Menu had many options along with an impressive drink menu. I found the decor really appealing and cute, with doodles from customers hanging on the wall to the restroom. I ordered the caesar wrap, but everything I saw inside looked divine! My food arrived pretty quickly. I was REALLY impressed by the wrap, and I say that as a pretentious caesar wrap connoisseur. The portion was huge and easily could have been two meals. They definitely did not skimp on the chicken and I felt satiated all day! The menu mentioned the wrap had "croitons" and while I originally thought it was a typo, I was surprised to find CROISSANT CROUTONS in the wrap! I was not disappointed by this and found it to be a unique take on the dish. I don't really care for Silver Lake personally, but I have a feeling I'll be back in the neighborhood soon enough just for Sqirl. Bravo! read more

Sqirl has been around since 2011 - a feat anywhere in this town, most especially spanning the years of quarantine. Yes they are doing things right! Perfect matcha, perfect espresso drinks! Delicious entrees and pastries that you must taste to believe. Fortunately they have a side yard with extra tables (and heat lamps), as they still maintain their popularity and clientele numbers. I and a friend had much chatting and catching up to do, so we started with espresso drinks, savored brunch items (rice bowl and shakshuka- one of the best shakshuka I have had) and topped off with matcha drinks and heavenly pastries: a Cardamom Cinnabun, and a Black Sesame Squiggle pastry with Yuzu custard. This place provided me with one of the best restaurant experiences I've ever had. Flew in from NYC to see friends for the weekend and they had made reservations for us for Friday night. It was a balmy, slightly chilly California evening (why don't I live in LA?) and we were seated at one of the tables outside on the sidewalk in front. The cocktails we started with were OUTSTANDING. I had a Manhattan, my friend Eric had a Gibson with mignonette juice, which he let me try: a tasty variation on a classic drink. We almost didn't get the bread service--DON'T MAKE THAT MISTAKE. The toast with jam and Nardello butter was soooo good. I don't eat meat, but my friends got the chicken liver pate and raved about it. The beet agnolotti was sublime. For the entrees, the idea is to order a bunch of plates for the table: we got chicken, sea bass which were both memorable. We were too full to have dessert. To cap it off, we got to meet the chef behind this amazing restaurant, Jessica, who came out to ask how our dinner was. Her attention to detail (the glassware for the cocktails was exquisite) makes Sqirl the kind of restaurant experience you'll remember for a long time to come. read more

Y'all, COME HERE. Popped in on a recommendation from a friend that lives nearby and was DE-lighted. The menu is a bit to sift through, but I opted for the vegan latkes with an double shot of espresso at the recommendation of the host who knew all the vegan options off the top of his head. The vegan latke came with these gorgina pickled veggies on top, which was perfectly balanced by a warm, crisp latke with a vegan spread. I also took home one of their homemade jams which I'm excited to try. The espresso was perfectly crafted and came in the most adorable espresso cups! Also, I need to give a note of gratitude to whoever selected the plates and general tableware, your taste is impeccable. Service was quick and friendly, seating was quiet and aplenty with indoor/outdoor options. We'll absolutely be back. read more

Tried and true, Sqirl LA was one of the first hipster farm-to-table restaurants near Silverlake that I've known of. Talk about setting the trend, this place has long been known to serve artisan breads, unique jams, and other specialty market goods like spices, trail mix and coffee in their neighborhood. But I personally think their jams are the best! With over more than a handful of varieties, be sure to check out their seasonal products. I had to grab at least 2 jars of artisan jam before heading out after a meal. Speaking of which, the Sorrel Pesto bowls are the must try here. They serve it simple with a poached egg, sheep feta, and watermelon radish. You can even order the bowl protein'd up with bacon, salmon, either combo is delish. Service here is truly genuine as their staff is always acknowledging, knowledgeable about their menu, and generous and mindful! It's no wonder they've been around LA for quite some time and I foresee them being a true LA staple. read more

One of my favorite brunch spots when I want to splurge and eat some really tasty, thoughtfully created and sourced real food! Let's face it. This place is hip. It belongs in the hipster LA overpriced bougie spots. But the food is actually really well-done, thoughtfully curated, and home style cooking with great ingredients. I don't go here a lot, but it's always been a staple top-of-mind for great brunch spots to try or take people from out of town to. The famed Ricotta Toast with 4 original jams is worth it. Their toast itself is nice and fluffy, not too dense, the whipped ricotta melts in your mouth, and the jams are a nice flavor variety. Their Sorrel Pesto Rice is also an easy brunch meal to order. Top it with an egg, some bacon, come chicken sausage (very tender and clean!), kale and avocado, and you've got yourself a nice, hearty bowl with a lemony twist. The Shaq, aka their shakshuka, is made-to-order dine-in only, and I could eat that thing everyday! It's comforting, easy, a nice bowl of tomato soup kind of feel, with fresh tomatoes and eggs cooked in the stone pot, and a nice generous long piece of baguette to pair. Yum! I also love that they have quality Ippudo matcha from Japan. The matcha americano with the coconut foam is PERFECT. I'd order that everyday if I could! It's perfectly not too sweet, and doesn't take away from the natural flavor of the matcha and the light sweetness from the foam that doesn't overpower. Perfection. Service is always nice and prompt, and even during their rushes they can take your order and serve you in a reasonable amount of time. Street parking and self seating! Came here for breakfast on a weekday so there wasn't a problem finding parking and a place to eat! Came with a large group of 8, but I think this is better for a smaller group just due to seating options! The service was great here, the food came fast and the waiters were patient and informative Got one of the crunchy rice bowls and the toast! The crunchy rice bowl was nice and different! It had a nice kick of spice to it, and it was definitely something new and different for me. I was surprised to find the dish doesn't come warm, and I think I would've liked it a lot more if it did! I found it was a bit salty for my liking though I also ordered the toast and the jam options at her biggest stand out for me! Sqirl has a large selection of jams with unique flavors and I found them nice flavorful, and not too sweet! Cute ambience and there are great vegan/vegetarian options!! read more
