If I lived in this neighborhood (or Denver for that matter), Sputnik would definitely be my local hangout for a chill night. I came here late on Saturday night and everyone was just hangin'. There was no rowdiness whatsoever. The bartenders were friendly and accomodating, our well drinks were $5ish bucks, they played Bob Dylan, there was a photobooth, and the food was incredibly satisfying. After two days of hiking, sightseeing, and blowing cash, this is actually what I was looking for. My two friends and I managed to get seats at the bar and shared an order of fries and hush puppies. Both were served in generous portions. The fries were thin and crispy and the accompanying roasted garlic dipping sauce was amazing -- I'm a big garlic fan and loved that it was more garlic, less sauce. If that even makes sense. The hush puppies were great too (soft and fluffy on the inside) but needed a little salt. I noticed that people tend to park themselves at their tables or the bar (instead of standing around) so if you're looking to sit, come early. This small, eclectic bar is the perfect place to grab a bite and a drink and just hanggg. read more

Save your silliness for a write-up on fish n' chips, woman! But for me, being in Sputnik is like speaking in a really overdone British accent. It feels awkward, unnatural, and like everyone is staring at me. I can't pinpoint whether its the waay too loud music, the stupid art on the walls (usually stupid, anyway), the "hipsters" that others are so quick to complain about, or the bi-polar waitstaff (sweet one second, scathing the next), but I just can't get down with this place. Something about it just isn't welcoming. Which is a shame, because I think their sweet potato fries are the absolute tops! I want to enjoy Sputnik so much more than I do. Note, I haven't been there for brunch, nor drinks only, so take this with a grain of salt. But after two failed attempts to eat a bahn mi sandwich there, I'm not headed back for food anytime soon. First time around, they didn't have all of the ingredients for the thing. So I ended up with... something forgettable. Helped along by something off of the somewhat standard beer list for a hip-ish bar -- the cheap beers alongside some local microbrews. The second time around, we sat at the bar and had indifferent service, at best. I was partway through my coveted bahn mi when I realized that the patties were tofu and not the pork that I had ordered. Wifey's taco salad, though it was on the menu, didn't exist in real life. And maybe my glasses aren't chunky enough, arms not tattooed enough, and jeans not tight enough, but it's awful loud for 7pm on a weeknight. But maybe I'm just getting old. So, 2 meals in, and the food was entirely forgettable, when it managed to arrive. Pass. read more

The first time I went to this place I had a perfect, if unspectacular experience. It was a beautiful weekday and I had the day off. I strolled down Broadway to Sputnik with a book in hand ("The Stupidest Angel- A heartwarming tale of Christmas Terror" by Christopher Moore). First I ordered a Newcastle (yum), then a Vietnamese Pork sandwich with these great tortilla chips on the side (double yum), then another Newcastle (burp). The bartender played his role well- he filled beers when empty, served food quickly, played great tunes (I specifically remember Mars Volta), and even asked about the book and we had a good chat. After another beer my meal was done. I grabed a latte to go, and smiled the whole way home. I am a simple man, with simple tastes, and I went home simply happy. What more can you want? The second time I went to this place, it was a Monday night, and I was there specifically for "Blingo"- the unusual marriage of alcohol, fashion, and bingo. I like contrasts, so there is no way in h-e double hockey sticks I was missing this. It didn't disappoint.. As much as I wanted to try the corndog, the Viet Pork Sandwich was too good to pass. The rest of the night was filled with $1 miller lights (service could have been faster), people yelling bingo, me being p!ssed that people other than me were yelling bingo, and great tunes- I still remember hearing Punk Rock Girl, Brimful of Asha remix by Fatboy Slim, and Floyd (Astronomy Domine) and thinking that I was in heaven- fie on you, corporate radio lovers. I have been there several times since, and I have a great time always. The memories combine in a haze of sweet potato fries, photo booth debauchery, vegan wasabi mayo, sitting in old hair dryers, cheap pints, and the best intentions to try food beyond the pork sandwich and sweet potato fries- no luck. Judge the patronage if you wish (many other reviewers have), but I have a great time here, and my fellow patrons have only contributed to that. read more

We were wandering around this end of the city, and the boyfriend was starving so we ended up at Sputnik. We got there a little before brunch was ending, so the place was packed and service was super- slow. But looking at the other reviews, super- slow just might be their style. The food was okay. For some reason, the menu seemed really limited to me... Not sure if it really is or just my imagination. I got the grilled cheese with tomato, which was good, but nothing to write home about. The boyfriend got the Persian, which yet again was good, nothing outstanding. The one silver lining in this mediocre experience was the sweet potato fries (which were perfectly prepared) paired with the sweet habanero jam. That was some awesome stuff. Didn't notice it being too hipster-y.... There was actually a pretty diverse crowd while we were there. While the fries/ jam was amazing, I don't think we would go back... Drop in if you want some inspiration for your next neck tat. Roll through if you want a strangely decent cocktail. Print out your Google Calendar and then pencil in a time to squeeze through the people standing in any sort of walking area inside. Whip out your ear trumpet to hone in on the entire Britney Spears discography that might be blaring on the speakers. Know this: you aren't cool enough to go to Sputnik. I'm not. You're not. Everyone inside is not. No one can live up to what Sputnik herself must expect to be the part of the clientele. Get a few Olympia's there and you'll see. You'll see. read more

Great place to kick with friends, enjoy some great food, and good old-school 50's style atmosphere. They have a full bar, tea and coffee, as well as a great menu selection of gourmet well thought out foods, and super good corn dogs. There are a ton of hipsters at this place, but S. Broadway is basically a tattooed, bearded, skinny pants and black rimmed glasses wearing zone of doom, so it is inevitable that you will see them clustering around like busy bees to flowers. My only complaint is the last time I went here, the service was a little weird. We had a really nice server, who was overly concerned with how we were doing, and asked about 50(exaggerated) times, if we needed anything else. When one of us finally broke down and asked for a coke, so he'd have something to do, we all went into this weird conversation about coke...And then apparently he forgot shortly thereafter we'd even ordered a coke, and forgot to bring it to us. It's great to discover a new bar on this stretch of Broadway that is littered with great spots. I have been all around Sputnik but never inside it. Last night I remedied that. I met a couple of friends here last night for drinks and a bite about 6pm. There were a couple of regulars at the bar and a couple of booths occupied. We grabbed a booth and the bartender was there with waters immediately. Her service was awesome. She kept checking on us, making sure we had another ordered and up before we finished the last one. We ordered dinner, and on her recommendation I went with the pork Vietnamese sandwich. The pork was actually a decent amount of a sausage patty that was very tasty, accompanied by great sweet potato fries and the habenaro jam. The latter went great with my sandwich. The place is very spacious, punk rock music fills the air, and the seats are comfortable. What's also a very nice touch is that unlike most bars where the nondrinker has an option of soda or 12 hour old 7-Eleven coffee, you can order a nice cup of coffee or a latte if that's your poison. This isn't a dive bar, just a good neighborhood spot. We had a really good time here, my guess is the weekend pulls in a much bigger crowd than a Wednesday night. Dude I forgot my mustache and black framed glasses. I only go here because my friend likes one of the bartenders and I have to admit he is worth coming to visit. The atmosphere is cool, sometimes they have a DJ. The place is always packed and the service and food are alright. I really don't like anything on the menu. The last time I ordered the Mac & Cheese it just didn't mix well with the vodka I'd been drinking. I like the art displays and it is usually pretty mellow. Why God, why did they have to change the Brussels Sprouts? They went from fried baby cabbages of love and hope and peace. A dish that could unite the masses. A dish that would bring a strong person to their knees. To seared Brussels sprouts with red grapes, that came to me practically raw, a teeny tiny portion for $7. How disappointing! Oh, my. I keep trying to go in for dinner -- thrice and thrice I've been dissapointed. Then, one day, desperate for a quick and cheap meal of Arepas, I tried to call in a to go order. No one answered. Three tries and 10 mins later, I realized I am in an abusive relationship with Sputnik. I kept thinking my poor service experience wouldn't be so badly repeated, but it's about the most consistent thing about the place. The "service" consists of a barren bar for 10 minutes at a time and table service by bartenders too irked at your teetotaler status to care about your food. Ugh. So sad. After getting food, I wanted to order a beer and chill for a bit, but no one came to see about that. Then, ALL the bartenders/waiters disappeared for long enough that one couple came, sat down, lingered, and then left before they came back. I almost went with them, but my conscience made me stay and pay for my food. Oh, god, and the food! Turns out my first good experience was a TOTAL fluke. 1st time back for Arepas, the avocado was full on brown and the pork burnt, then the dish went off the menu altogether. From the new menu, I ordered a falafel that was oddly sweet and came wrapped in a tortilla (wtf? A tortilla?) and worst of all was the tahini. At first I thought my sandwich had none, so I asked for a side of it. It was dull green, tasted like peanut butter, and had brown flecks floating around in it. That's when I realized that there was some of that stuff on my sandwich, I just would never call it tahini sauce. I've made tahini at home, and this was missing all the tangy and garlicky flavor one usually adds to the plain paste. Sputnik will always have a special place in my heart. It's overrun with hipsters and smells like stale beer, and I mean that in the most endearing way possible. And when I say overrun with hipsters, I mean HIP-sters. None of this half hippie, half librarian from the 70's nonsense, they are hipsters through and through. All the boys are required to grow beards, skinny jeans, and non-prescription coke bottle glasses. All the girls must sit at the noisy bar reading books, hoping to appear aloof. You will never make a friend here. Well, at least I will never make a friend here. It's not that I haven't tried, I've sat at the bar many an evening, and have attempted to strike up a conversation with whoever is sitting next to me. SHOT DOWN. Every time. I've been going to Sputnik for years, and have yet to learn the name of any of the bartenders or waitresses. I attempt to ask sometimes, when it's a slow afternoon, and the bartenders look bored, "Hey, what's your name, you've served me a million times, but I've never actually met you!" but all I get is the hipster freeze out. I'm convinced there's some sort of secret hipster points system for acts of aloofness. Ignoring someone who's talking directly at you, that's like, 56.7 points! The waitresses are only slightly better, but you should expect to wait a while for your drinks and your food. All this bitching aside, Sputnik is still one of my favorite hang-outs. The consequence of all the hipsters is amazing music playing ALL THE TIME, day or night. On the weekends they sometimes bring in guest DJs, and then the music is exceptional, really. Also, the food is fantastic. And super cheap! It's not gourmet or anything, and you probably don't ever want to see the inside of the kitchen, but DAMN, they make a mean mac n' cheese. Also great: Vegetarian Arepas with queso blanco and guava jam, hearts of palm salad, and killer sweet potato fries. Ask about their crazy sauces. PLUS! They have two, count em' TWO happy hours daily: one during the regular happy hour time, one late night. It's the perfect place to satisfy your late-night munchies! It definitely gets crowded on weekend nights, especially if there's a show next door at the Hi-Dive, so I always suggest going for happy hour or brunch. Just remember, you're there for the food and the tunes, not to lock eyes with your soul mate from across the room. I think every time I go to Sputnik, its awesome-ness factor goes up a notch! LOVE.THIS.PLACE. From the people who hang out there to the music they play and ending with the photo booth! Speaking of the photo booth, did you know it is the only working film photo booth in Denver! Ok now to break it down for you- The food, SO good. Especially considering that it is bar food. Sweet potato fries are to die for. Their vegan and gluten free options are so tasty. Personally, the vegan tacos are my favorite. Lets just say that the food is so good it trumps the bitchy waitress, bringing it to you. (can i say that?) seriously though, the girls that work there aren't nice by any means. Love the atmosphere. They always have interesting artwork displayed from local artists. I'm not really sure about the cleanliness because it is always dark in there... minor detail though. the people there are always fun to be around and in my opinion are a unique crowd. The music is awesome (in a sing-songy voice). Last time I was there I think Wham was on as I walked through the door and then went on to MC Hammer. For those who don't know... Monday night = BINGO Night! Yes, BINGO! I recently found this out as I went there for my birthday, on a Monday night. It was AWESOME. I've had better. I can handle a hipster place if it delivers good food, but Sputnik fell short. Traveling to Denver I looked for a place with vegan and gluten-free options so this seemed like a place that would fit my needs. After looking at the menu online I decided to get the vegan power stack since it's gluten-free, but when I arrived I was told it wasn't. First disappointment, the second was the waitress/bar maid who seemed annoyed to have to answer my questions. The environment was overly loud and dark, pumping 90s rap in exchange for ambiance. My food came out room temperature and was basically a plate of pinto beans with a few tortilla chips. As the cooks brought out the food they set it on the bar to be deliver and walked back to the kitchen wiping their noses and touching their faces. Sputnik shares its bar-side wall with the Hi-Dive, a great little venue that features regular shows. In either place, you'll notice staff flitting through the door marked "NOT AN EXIT" that connects the two spiritually and through their merchandise. The biggest perk to this is that if you're at the Hi-Dive, you can get great music on the stage and great food shuttled in from next door. Among my friends, Sputnik's sweet potato fries have a reputation for deliciousness. They're served with two sauces, a sweet and spicy sauce and what seems like a mayonnaise-based sauce with a tang to it. Both are delicious, and with a small being large enough to split among several people (assuming you're not trying to make it a full meal), it's one of the most delicious options there. The rest of the menu is combination of international bar food. From standard sliders to mac and cheese to Indian pav (which are fantastic, by the way), the menu packs surprising variety for a whole in the wall bar. At night, the atmosphere in Sputnik itself isn't the greatest, especially when it's crowded. The bar is darker than black hole and the music is often too loud to talk with people just across the table without yelling. Unfortunately, the booths are big enough to seat 5-6, so showing up with just two people can feel like taking up too much space. Though I've only ever been in when out for shows at the Hi-Dive (meaning traffic is probably higher than normal), I often find Sputnik is understaffed and takes a little while to catch up to new customers. Still, the food is good and the staff tries hard, which makes Sputnik worth a stop if you're in the area. read more

After 5 years I fell out of love with you today. The waitress stared at my empty glass and mug just after I did at least 20 times in 30 minutes till I had to finally ask for a refills when she asked if we were ready for our check. . Like I said I ate here for at least 3 versions of the menu, declining service, and I have unhappily conditioned myself for said worse customer service expected on South Broadway since it's gentrification, but today was so sub par it could have even been considered unfriendly. Yes, Sputnik is a fantastic brunch spot. It's hard to argue with $5 bottomless mimosas! In fact, I will never turn down that offer...no matter how hungover I am. Yes, the bartenders are pretty fantastic. Always kept my glass full, were very apologetic when they messed up my order.... fixed it right away, and even took it off our bill! That, in and of itself, is why I will definitely return here. So, my beef with this place is the food. No, it's not horrible.... and is completely affordable. However, I just didn't think it was that great. Maybe it was the dishes that we ordered: Bryan had the Egg-in-the-Hole, and I had a bowl full of fries, topped with gravy, eggs, cheese, and a bunch of other stuff (cant remember the name). Both dishes were just...eh, okay. I could have made a better breakfast at home. Even though our food wasn't too good, I will totally go back to Sputnik. So my little quick tip I left the other night pretty much sums up this place: Fries, Corndogs, Hipsters....yes. The food is amazing and the place is funky. Hipsters annoy the shit out of me most of the time but I can tolerate their presence because this place is so cool. Sweet potato fries, JUST DO IT. This was the second stop on our Mac and Cheese tour. The place is small but has big booths plus stools at the bar. I didn't feel crowded at all. When the Mac arrived I was very excited to see that parts were crispy. I'm not sure if it was the top or bottom, didn't matter I like crispy bits. The first thing you notice when you eat their Mac is the nutmeg!! The sauce was a traditional bechamel, which would have been good with a bit less nutmeg. All I could taste was nutmeg! As Hans pointed out it probably wasn't even fresh nutmeg. All my spice qualms aside, I did enjoy stopping here. The mac was only $3, not a bad investment. I really wanted to try the Arepes but I wanted to leave room for the last stop on the Mac Train. The prices are reasonable and the food was alright. The downside is that it is still a bar, not a restaurant. The bathroom lock was hard to lock; I don't like to pee in fight or flight mode. The bathroom walls were black, always a sign of a place that values sanitation over convenience. The kitchen was also a bit scary, but since I had just eaten their food I did not dwell on that sight. I'm sure that if I was out for drinks and was hungry I would love to stop in to Sputnik and try some of their other apps and entrees. read more

Pretty fun and chill atmosphere, filled with a hipster crowd. I really dig their cocktails and some of their food items are pretty good. Their sweet potato fries and mac n cheese are a good way to go, other items are really hit or miss. The atmosphere is pretty unique, especially with the 80's retro feel and decorations. I have fun there when it's not too crowded, but unfortunately it gets packed and obnoxious on most nights I want to go out. Wait... what? Vegan Ramen at brunch? And mimosas for $5 and you'll give me a refillable carafe? Have I stumbled into a heaven of debauchery and dead baby cakes? No, I strolled into Sputnik for brunch on Saturday. I had the Ramen, prepared vegan and my husband had a tempeh sandwich. We were both in multitudes of heaven. The service was great. I had brought a cake for a friend (yes, it was a dead baby cake, and it was amazing) and our attentive server brought us a knife, several plates, and forks to pass it out. And when we had cut the cake and nobody wanted to take it home, they kept it and complimented it nicely, giving it to other customers for free. He got a nice tip from me. The food was good. It was definitely very reasonable. Two friends and I ate for 31.75. We each had an entree and two of us drank mimosas. Sometimes the wait to get into Sputnik is long, and the restaurant is full of hipsters. If you can get in at the right time, however, it's completely worth it. read more

Love the vegan menu and that they are open late. The vegan ban mi is pretty skimped (one piece of soy ham) and more bread than anything else, I recommend opting for the cubano instead. The hot falafel is also good and I love the sauces. I'm giving 3 stars because on 3 or 4 occasions now, when I call to order pickup, the phone line is out of service. Very weird. The staff is so hip they were into not being helpful long before anyone else was. Really cool people. It's pretty lame how debonair they are about their job. Oh if only good customer service was ironic...sigh. The bar scene isn't too bad at night, though the service is just as bad. Drinks are pretty good and their prices are reasonable. They do a great bloody mary. But their most redeeming, unique and singular menu item was their arepas, a special they would change up and feature on the board frequently. Too bad they got rid of their arepas and most of the really creative items in favor of your average, vegan-infused bar fare. Not impressive. Though I was instructed that there were great items on the seemingly bland menu, the blank, indifferent stare from the bartender really didn't sell me. I am not sure if they were not hugged enough as children or their Mama stopped breast feeding too soon but the employees were terrible. I am only giving one star because there is not an option to give zero! I have never had worse service or felt like such a bother to a place that I was paying. If you want to be treated like trash and wait way to long for your food this is the place for you. It is too bad because the food options are imaginative, the decor is cool but the people suck! No, not the Russian satellite that made Americans paranoid for six months in the 50s, but Sputnik, the bar on South Broadway in that Earth city you call "Denver." I just wanted to let all you earth hipsters know that I am the hipsteriest bar in Denver.
