This review is for restaurant week We came here with a party of three on a Saturday. We had reservations at 6 and were seated right away. The restaurant was fairly empty at first but filled up by the time we left. I love the ambience of this place. It is very chic and modern. The service was also great and everyone was very friendly. For appetizer the table ordered the Calamari, the hand pulled mozzarella and the arancini. All dishes were good although the Calamari was a bit over salted. The main courses we got two of the chicken parm and one of the veal. The Chicken parm took up the entire plate and the pasta came on a small plate next to it. The portions are very large and you definitely won't be leaving hungry. I was very disappointed in their zeppole. It was not as much a powdered doughnut but more of a large thin piece of bread with some dough around it and powdered sugar. They definitely need to work on this recipe as it has great potential. I thought it was a bit strange that there was a wine list on the back of the menu with lower prices and then they gave you another separate wine list which was more expensive than the back of the menu even though some of the wines were the same just up charged in price point. All their wine bottles were around $60 and their glasses of wines around $13-15 on the separate wine list provided we were told to order from. If you are going to provide a separate wine list with increased prices at least take the list from your online menu and menu provided to the guests off the selection. I won't be back for their restaurant week menu as I think other places in Pittsburgh have a better menu for restaurant week in addition to price point. Normally it costs $35 even at high end steak restaurants but here they charged $40 for their limited menu. For an Italian restaurant they only had one pasta dish on their restaurant week menu. read more

I want to rate this place higher, but at least in this first visit I can't. My partner and I had an 830 reservation and arrived at about 820. The hostess advised it would be at least 20 minutes for our table to be ready and we could get a drink downstairs or at the bar. We used the restroom and found two seats at the bar and ordered a drink. I checked back with the hostess to advise we would be there so she knew where to find us and she said she would text (could have said that to begin with). Bartender was nice. Two drinks were good. Negroni and lavender sangria. We were seated and our waiter Brian was nice enough. We ordered the meatball small plate, the chicken Parm, and the rigatoni. The food came out fast, but perhaps too quickly. I ate a few bites of the chicken Parm which was delicious until I realized that the further to the middle I got the chicken was totally raw. Now, I'll start by saying I HATE complaining at a restaurant even when justified. I don't like causing issues, but the chicken was inedible and unsafe to eat. The food runner stopped by with our meatball and I let him know about the chicken and he was super apologetic and nice about it. The server was OK about it, but the thing that got me was no comp, no let me send the manager over. Nothing like that. And it seemed like the server was less friendly even though we were super apologetic bringing the whole chicken issue up. Now I didn't ask - I don't think you should have to. And mind you I am at over $100 bill at the moment so we are ordering food. Several drinks. Still trying to enjoy ourselves. Definitely disappointed in the handling of that though. The woman at the front desk told us she was instructed by the manager not to seat anyone, but didn't want to say that and make people angry. All the while continuing to take party names down and telling them they could be seated. This is absurd and disrespectful to our time. If you are not going to seat customers that had made a reservation, tell us so we can go elsewhere. We were told the manager was going to come speak to us, but this never happened. We ordered the meatball, bruschetta, and 2 pizzas (mushroom and margarita). The pizza dough seems worse than frozen, incredibly hard. I was immediately concerned when they approached our table with rectangular trays. Something about pizzas in trays doesn't ever seem to work out. Flavors were dull, definitely not worth the money. This place was SO disappointing. We came while my parents were in town, just for a casual drink and some dinner. Our drinks took awhile, but ultimately pretty good. We ordered the Caesar salad which was ultimately just a head of romaine lettuce with whole anchovies on it, some capers thrown on, and dressing scarcely drizzled on - absolutely no taste and spent $12 for a $2 head of romaine. We got cacio pepe and the meatball for our entrees - both came out cold at first. After the second try, the cacio pepe was ultimately inedible. Tasted like it was reheated 10 times with month old pasta. The meatball was underwhelming at best. The only thing redeeming about this place was our waitress. She was an absolute gem. For appetizers we had Arancini and Fried Zucchini. We ordered Rapini E Fagioli, Beans & greens and Formaggi Pizza in entre. Appetizers were delish and flavorful, so was pizza. It did not look like a traditional pizza. Seems they use different type of bread felt like close to Focaccia but it was decent. The issue was with pasta and the type of cheese they used. Al dente is OK for pasta but it was even less boiled than that. The cheese they used was smelly and not the usual we expect. May be I don't have refined palette for artisan cheese but it was outright bitter in taste and did not go well with us. We were big party of 14 with our family and extended one. 2 of us had upset stomach right after this lunch and I have strong feeling it has to do with pasta or cheese. Service was great. Our server brought us 2 bowls of bread on asking for it. That with butter was half a meal for few in our party. Omg!! This is just what we needed. At home date night. After turning on cartoons for our son, we set the table with our takeout. We got chicken parm, arancini, calamari, and the meatball. The food was pretty solid but honestly the drinks stood out the most! We had the lavender sangria and it was so refreshing, but dangerous! Does not taste like alcohol at all! The meatball appetizer was good, I get the concept of one giant meatball but it did make it harder to share, especially with only one piece of bread. I heard mixed reviews about this restaurant but was pleasantly surprised by it. Exceeded my expectations in more ways than I thought! First, the ambience was really nice. We got a booth in a corner which was perfect. The only thing was there wasn't much lighting. Second, service was amazing. Didn't get the name of our server, but he was so helpful when choosing drinks and food. We also didn't have to wait long for our food and drinks. Third, the food was delicious. We got the crab ravioli and the chicken and mushroom pizza (technically sausage and mushroom but substituted chicken due to dietary restrictions). The sauce for the ravioli was incredible and the crust for the pizza was amazing. There was maybe a little too much cheese on the pizza but overall we loved what we got. We got tiramisu for dessert and it was also really good. A little rich, but perfect for sharing. The drinks were also perfect..we got lavender sangria and the sage smash (both recommended by the server). We got dinner at Scarpino prior to the show downtown. We didn't make reservations and they were the only place with a table available. They set us right away. Our server was super friendly and down to earth. She was probably my favorite thing about the place. We order the crab raviolis as well as the scallops over risotto. The crab raviolis were very tasty however I can't help but feeling that the portion size did not match up with the price tag. Although we had to send our scallops back for new ones because they were charred the scallops over the mushroom risotto turned out to be pretty decebt. I visited Scarpino with my boyfriend and his family, that was in town from out of the country. We visited during the Arts Festival, but the restaurant did not look busy. The service was friendly, but unfortunately, the time it took to receive our food was very disappointing. Our food all came out at once, and some of it was cold, and some of it was hot. A great new spot downtown, located in the former spot of Ten Penny. Reservations were easy online, they use Resy. The restaurant space was awesome and the staff was very friendly. The menu, both food and cocktails, is a little limited and somewhat pricy but well worth it. I had the "Pasquale Parmigiana" which was excellent and definitely shareable. Scarpino has become easily one of our favorite spots! We first went in February for Valentine's Day and we've been back several times! The spicy rigatoni is my favorite! Chicken Parmesan is the biggest portion I have ever seen, and you can not go wrong with the Cacio e Pepe! Save room for the cannoli flight because it is to die for. My ONLY complaint is I notice a little inconsistency with the serving portions. One time I went with a group, 2 of us ordered the same dish and one had significantly more pasta in it. The downtown Penn Avenue Restaurant Row was hopping on the first Saturday of Autumn. We selected Scarpino because they take reservations. Their outdoor seating is set up in the parking lane of Tenth Street (vs. on the sidewalk). The street noise from cars making a left out of the Westin Hotel, other drivers honking when the light turned green, and cars/motorcycles cruising the strip showcasing the power of their engines, made our table conversation pause multiple times as we couldn't hear each other. In addition to the absence of sound buffering decor, also absent where heat lamps and sitting on metal chairs became chilly as the stars came out. A plus is the seating can accommodate large groups. We had the arancini for an appetizer. My entree was Rigatoni ala vodka. It was a very large portion. Though nothing memorable, I enjoyed it. The limoncello martini was the star of the show for me. Our waitress was new but great. The other staff we encountered were lovely also. It's nice having an Italian option adding to the variety in the Cultural District. read more

I dine at scarpino occasionally. I can't say that I don't recommend anything here, but sometimes they fail to reheat what I understand is well prepped food. I have had good Arancini and I've had arancini that I would never touch. Same with the bolognese. The strip steak is not something I would recommend. The bar is well equipped and I have not noticed any issues with their bar program. I will say that they will accommodate these problems, but that does not mean that they will solve them. I don't expect any restaurant to be anywhere near perfect, but I am here to comment on the current state of scarpino. read more

This place will be closed in a year - the only reason this gets one star is because it had heat and electricity. The most notable observation of the evening was my wife and I watched our visibly high waitress nodding off while she was serving us our food...wow... I then walked to the back of the restaurant and asked to speak to the manager. The manager came up the steps with his hat on backwards and said "what's up". I told him what was going on and he responded by saying "ok thanks I'll have a conversation with her". He did not apologize on her behalf. I turned around to walk back to the table. Our high waitress was walking toward where the mgr and I were standing. The mgr says to her as I'm walking away "hey...what the f**k"... I'm not even going to go into about how unprofessional that language was in front of a customer. I proceeded to walk back to our table expecting her to be sent home for the evening. She wasn't. She continued serving us our meal along with other tables... She walked over to me, aggressively set my drink down in front of me and walked away. I couldn't help but wonder if she washed her hands after she used whatever drug she was using... Anyways, I have to give credit to where credit is due...we had a table of 13 and as high as our waitress was, she didn't get one thing wrong with our order or how we split the check. Now for the food...the majority of us at the table ordered the chicken parm...the meal was warm, the sauce tasted like it came out of a can and the chicken was definitely nothing to talk about. I would have gotten more enjoyment out of a can of spaghettios on buttered toast. The other meals at the table were equally as terrible. It was laughable at at terrible the food was. Something on one of the plates resembled a soggy oatmeal and tasted similar to that. The majority of the people at our table didn't finish their $30-$40 meal because it was so bad. We paid our bill and got the heck of dodge! The conversation for the next 10 min was how surprised we were at how terrible the food was. It's been a week since we ate there and my wife and I still joke about it. Save your $ and go somewhere else...ANYWHERE else! Seriously- this place is really bad. The second time we sat at the bar ordered a glass of wine and penne vodka. The bartender forgot the wine, despite the place being empty at 8pm. I was really disappointed with my main entree during this trip. I got the lobster ravioli and it was like...appetizer sized! And not that great. I mean I think there was a total of 5 tiny raviolis. The nice waiter did offer 2 complimentary limencello shots, which I was happy about. Still didn't take away from the fact that I was still hungry though. My husband got the pepperoni pizza and he said it was just okay. Nothing special. My favorite thing was the burrata, but again, a very small appetizer portion. It came with 2 pieces of crostini type toast. Literally 2 pieces for an entire ball of burrata. Made no sense to me. However, it was delicious. It was overall a disappointment, which really stinks because I've been here before and loved it. The drinks are the best thing about this place (and it's cute). We chose scarpino as our first date night after moving to Pittsburgh and were quite pleased with our pick. Dining out with twins requires a lot of planning and effort but staff at scarpino was really pleasant and accommodating. We had spaghetti pomodoro and rigatoni as our entrees. This is a great new spot in downtown Pittsburgh. I had an espresso martini which is not on the menu but I saw it on their Instagram and asked if they could make me one and they did! It was very good and definitely strong! We had the arancini and calamari as an appetizer. The arancini were great! I've had many arancini before but never with goat cheese in the middle which I thought was really good. The calamari was also very solid. I got the cacio pepe as an entree. It was very hard to decide what to order because so many options looked good! But I'm glad I went with the cacio pepe it was one of the best versions I've ever had - even compared to some I had in Italy. The vibe of this place is also really nice! And I love that they've added outdoor seating. The owner stopped by multiple times to offer recommendations on what to order and he brought over some complimentary moscato at the end of our meal. It's also nice that (at least for now) you don't have to plan 4 weeks out in order to get a reservation. Which does seem to be the case for a lot of restaurants in Pittsburgh lately. The only negative thing I can even say about the restaurant is that the high top stools are incredibly tiny and uncomfortable. Definitely get a low top or an outdoor table if you can. read more

We came during restaurant week and tried that menu. I got the Caesar salad, chicken Piccata, and cheesecake. The Caesar salad was SO SALTY, and the rest of my party agreed it was egregiously salty. Our entrees came, my chicken piccata was again, SO SALTY. The chicken was decent, but the risotto was very salty. The dessert came...my cheesecake was still frozen - it wasn't bad, it wasn't good. The service was slow, but our waitress was awesome, very sweet. Overall, I probably would not return or recommend this to anyone I know. read more

The most constructive review I can provide is a 2 star rating. Environment is about a 4. Nice place. Building and location are awesome. Sort of a gold mine in terms of where it's placed and the ambiance is nice. Our service was ok. Nice people but not too attentive, and not overly welcoming. The food was sub par. 6 of us all ordered different items, none of which were memorable. The drinks were also not great. Most ordered menu cocktails, which were local bar level. I personally ordered an old fashioned, and it was one of the worst I've had. Would I go back? Maybe. But only because of location and availability. We attended an event at the convention center and Scarpino is located conveniently across the street. We called ahead & 11 of us arrived looking for a quick meal of pizza & beers. We waited 20 minutes for our first drinks, then placed our dinner orders. Pizza (delicious) & salads -nothing complicated and yet we sat for 2 hours. I ordered a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and then a 2nd. Guess what ? They ran out of my wine & sent a glass of some other white without mentioning it & hoping I wouldn't notice. Gosh I hate that .... Then we ordered dessert - cannolis & gelato - it took 25 minutes. Mind you there was hardly anyone in the restaurant. 3 of us asked 3 different people about where was our dessert and no one could figure it out. When I finally spoke to the manager - she said she would have to research what happened & get back to us ! ‍‍ I'm still waiting. For my main, I had the chicken parmesan, which was HUGE. Easily can be shared between 2-3 people or make great left overs. My friends had the rigatoni ala vodka and the cacio e pepe. All the meals were good, but nothing to write home about. Was hoping for a little more flavor in my dish. The vodka sauce was a bit overpowered by tons of fresh garlic.
