I've been following them on Instagram since before they opened and have been eating to try it since the first post. The menu is small, the ambiance is perfect for date night, or an evening with friends and family. Realistically I would say it's a 4.5 out of 5 during my visit. The giant meatball was not disappointing at all! It was so delicious and could easily be split into 4 for an appetizer. The hand pulled mozzarella was also really yummy, just wish they would have down as many toasts as mozzarella (ocd thing) As other reviews have said, the chicken parm is HUGE!! Could easily be shared or make at least 2-3 meals out of it. The arugula salad on top was nice and refreshing with a lemon vinaigrette. My boyfriend had the linguine with clams and garlic sauce. It was really yummy too and a pretty large portion. My only real issue is that the wine list is just significantly overpriced. I know wine is an overcharge everywhere but $45 for a $14 bottle of wine is a little excessive. They do not have any bottles under $40 and a class under $10 is not there. Also the wine list does not match what they actually have. I will definitely be back. I would love to try a pizza. read more

I came here a few years ago when they first opened and just made my way back. They were a little dead on Friday night and I'm not sure why. Their drinks are strong and the food was great. Great room and location. Service was very good from our server Nato. The hostess was borderline unprofessional. Was obviously not happy to be working, wearing ear buds and eating a bag of chips. Interacted with us with a jaded less than happy attitude. We both ordered one of their thin crust pizzas, which were both very good with good crust, lots of cheese and tasty meat but a little pricey at $17 each. Menu was very limited and they were out of most beers. Beers were reasonably priced, however wine was very expensive at approx $14 to $18 per glass! Bartender was very kind. The food came out late and she offered us a round of drinks. Unfortunately, I got food poisoning from the shrimp scampi and the noodles were not the right noodles for the meal. The wine that was poured with pieces of the cork in it. Finally, when we got our pizza it was to have basil on it and when we go it, it was garnished with generic micro greens. Disappointing for such a nice location. read more

Finally had the opportunity to try out this Italian restaurant with my daughter for lunch. Although reservations are strongly recommended we found that during the lunch hour Scarpino wasn't too busy. Knowing their portion sizes would be huge we decided to share one "small plate" along with a pizza. Seeing the meatballs as a small plate I inquired as to how many you get. I was told one big meatball. The plural form "meatballs" on the menu is a typo our waitress explained. We decided to have that first and then share the pizza. We got our meatball fairly quickly and was she right-this was one of the biggest meatballs we ever saw for one small plate! It came with 2 slices of ciabatta bread for dipping in the meat sauce. Our waitress gave us two plates and believe me even the two of us couldn't finish the meatball since it was so good and quite filling to say the least! Hence our first take home item. We then got the pizza margherita laden with cooked tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese, basil, and tomato sauce on a thin flakey crust. The pizza was cut into 4 large slices. Even though the pizza was big it wasn't overfilling and the sauce had a somewhat sweet taste to it. Still the two of us weren't able to finish it and hence another take home box. Staff is very friendly and the manager came around to ask how we liked our meatball. We told him how much we liked it and then he explained to us had they been regular size meatballs then we would have gotten 5 of them. Scarpino occupies the space formerly known as Ten Penny. They are open primarily for dinner only but do serve lunch on weekends. Oh man! 5-stars all around. Delicious food, great service, and amazing ambiance. The food is flavorful and the prices are reasonable given the quality and quantity. I went with some friends for a pre-show dinner and our waiter was aware of the fact that we had a time limit and accommodated us throughout our whole meal (e.g. putting our appetizers in right away, letting us know that our food was coming out soon, and grabbing our checks quickly). I was pleasantly surprised with how delicious the food at Scarpino was! I've heard mixed reviews, but had a lot of trustworthy foodies tell me I needed to try it! I made a reservation for 4 of us on a Wednesday evening. We were seated in a cozy booth where we could admire all the decor. It really is a cool restaurant inside. They have cute outdoor seating with comfortable couches to lounge on and tables and chairs. We chose to sit inside since it was starting to get cold outside. Our waitress was very attentive! Upon sitting down, an older French man came over to our table (after loudly complimenting my outfit) and gave us suggestions on what to order. I was honestly caught off guard because we didn't know who he was or if was another customer since he was seated at the bar. I'm still not sure who he is, but he did seem affiliated with the restaurant. I asked our waitress about the 2 Italian red wines on the list, and she told me one was comparable to a Cab and was drier. I went with that one. I thought the wine was fine, but $13 a glass was steep. I wish they had a larger selection, especially because it is an Italian restaurant. I would've rather had a heavier glass of red wine like a Chianti to pair with the meal. We first ordered the arancini and the mozzarella as appetizers. The goat cheese arancini were really tiny (size of golf balls), but were so flavorful and savory. I really loved them. The mozzarella was "meh". I expected it to be like burrata or buffalo mozzarella. The roasted tomatoes were good, but we only had 3 small slices of tomatoes so it wasn't great for sharing. The toast it came with was cold and hard, like stale bread. I wouldn't order it again. For my dinner I ordered the cacio e pepe. I would absolutely get this again! It was different from any other cacio pepe I've had, and I think that is because of the ricotta whey. The sauce was super rich and creamy. I loved the fresh bucatini too- the perfect type of pasta to hold the thick sauce. I give this dish 5 stars! The portions were large...I took half home. Other guests at the table ordered the chicken parm, which was HUGE. It could have easily fed 3 people. The chicken breast was very thick and large. They said how moist it was, and both people loved it. I tried the red sauce on the bucatini that came with it, and liked it. We passed on pizza this time, but I would definitely like to try it in the future (especially the seafood pizza). I really did enjoy my meal here. read more

Came for restaurant week which seemed to be a good deal ($40 for 3 courses). We were not in the mood for dessert so ended up just doing regular menu. Ambiance- friendly service. Nicer end of casual. Unfortunately covid-wise no staff was wearing masks. Good for small groups. Food - For Appetizers we got fried zucchini and calamari. Both were well fried - not much flavor. Entrees - scallops were okay. Paired with Risotto that was too cheesy. The broccoli at the bottom would've been better on the side. Also got the sausage and funghi pizza - was over cooked. Wouldn't recommend. Overall, given the ambiance would probably recommend for drinks and apps. Rating system: 5.0- obsessed. Wouldn't change a thing. Wish I lived here 4.0 - a must go place. Has its flaws but guaranteed to be enjoyable. 3.0- would go to again under specific circumstances but not my top choice 2.0 - wouldn't recommend and won't be back. 1.0 - something must have been terribly wrong for me to publicly review a business so harshly. read more

This city has SO many better Italian restaurants to offer, don't waste your time here. Let me start by saying that I was hesitant to dine here simply based on the fact that it's owned by ampd... but they had a convenient reso available... so I pulled the trigger... I really should've listened to my gut. Sure, it was a busy Saturday night with lots going on downtown, which is why I made a reso 2 weeks in advance. We arrived a little early, and were told they were running behind but we were 2nd in line to be seated. No problem. While we patiently waited in the lobby trying to stay out the way of the chaos, we quickly realized the reality of the shit show that was around us. Miserable people all around, distressed employees, food being delivered to the wrong tables, people being turned away at the door and the entire downstairs closed for a private event... Still we waited patiently while multiple people complained to the manager and then magically were promptly seated. After an hour, and watching 4 parties be seated, we checked in with the hostess. She assured us that we were next to be seated. Then 10 mins later, she sat a table of 10 instead of us. At this point we realized the only way to actually get seated wasn't to be polite and patient, but to speak to the manager. The distressed and visibly overwhelmed manager provided an array of excuses about party sizes (which we later discovered was BS as one of the couples who was seated before us, were seated at a six top...) and lingering guests... but alas, 5 mins later, we were finally seated. Now the server, he was the only good thing about this place. I wish I had his name. He was kind, pleasent & understanding and he took good care of us. The drink selection was weak. A handful of cocktails and beers to choose from.. and while the menu looked good, the food was nothing to write home about. The pasta was mediocre and the pizza was pathetic. The best dish at our table was the cacio e pepe which I would give 6/10. Plus we had to rush to eat to make it to our event in time. There's a way to balance resos and walk ins that doesn't result in resos waiting for over an hour to be seated... and THIS was not it. Over promising and under delivering is never the way to go... especially in an already stressful situation. Went in there at about 8PM on a Thursday night; place only about 1/2 full. Took (not kidding) 20 minutes to get a single meatball appetizer, and a further 28 minutes to get a single entree: rigatoni. Food was fine, service OK, ambiance OK. Whoever is running their kitchen is incompetent, and for that they get two stars. read more

I dined here recently with a party of three. Our dining experience was pleasant: the restaurant was clean and our server was kind and attentive. The food was good, however lacked in some areas. The pasta is not homemade and the sauces were bland (especially the cacio e pepe). The mozzarella in the picture below was tough. Also, the wine list was not thorough and did not list where the wine is from. On the other hand, the salads we enjoyed were very good. The tomatoes with the bruschetta were also very tasty and my party really enjoyed the meatball. Just finished a dinner with a group of eight. Good service and food was tasty. Our zucchini and my chicken parm each were burnt on edges (black) but otherwise good. Hubby got cod. Friends got piccata and salads. Everyone enjoyed their food. Would be a five star if we didn't have to trim the burnt edges off things as I wouldn't send out burnt food and it was really obviously burnt. Need better quality control on food leaving kitchen. Went here a few months ago for my fathers birthday and I'm back and forth on how to rate it. I had the chicken Parm, which was good, but my pasta was cold. We were a group of four and there was one other couple in the restaurant at the time, yet our food still came out cold. The space is cool and modern and I can imagine would be great in the summer with the outdoor space. But even with all the windows and doors shut on a rainy day, there were flies everywhere. Had a couple standard Italian dishes and the meat tasted questionable, flavors incredibly basic. Was severely overcharged for a glass of house wine as well, at $17. Poor ethics and low-quality food. I'd never recommend this restaurant to anyone, even if you were stranded downtown and starving. There are dozens of top-notch, less-expensive, Italian joints in Pittsburgh. A literal Valentine's Day turd. I was inclined to file a CC charge against this business to deal with the fraudulent charges, but got too busy. read more

I went for restaurant week which included a 3 course meal for around $40. The appetizer (arancini) and dessert (chocolate hazelnut tart) were both fantastic. I wasn't a big fan of my entree though - I chose Cacio e Pepe and it had WAYYY too much pepper, making it not so enjoyable. However, my friends got dishes with meat and enjoyed their entrees. Went to the opening of the Spritzery at Scarpino. The drinks on the menu were very good and the atmosphere was lovely. However the customer service and preparedness of the restaurant for opening was inadequate, and the professionalism of staff in the aftermath was concerning. At the restaurant, our drinks took an extremely long time to be made. We ordered an 86oz aperol spritz pitcher, and it took over 15 minutes for it to be made for us. When we did receive the pitcher, it was 33oz and it was just Prosecco. While we did go back and get aperol added to the pitcher, we did get charged for the 84oz pitcher. We were not told that the pitcher would be smaller and were not told if there were any changes to pricing. A friend we were with posted on social media that it was "false advertising" that we paid for 86oz and only received 33oz and tagged the social media page. The responses we received were unprofessional. One response she received from the page said that their "dishware was not delivered in time, so they had to improvise." The owner responded that it was not false advertising, and if "you'd ever opened a business you'd understand the craziness." After these communications, we were ALL blocked on social media. Not only are their excuses unacceptable, the unprofessionalism of blocking people on social media for providing feedback was wild. As someone who was visiting Pittsburgh this weekend and took time to attend this establishment, I am very disappointed. read more

I love Cacio e Pepe. It's one of my favorite dishes and I get it every time it's offered somewhere. That being said, this didn't even break the top ten for me because of the sheer amount of pepper on this dish. They ruined it! Not sure if that's how they always make it, but it was way to much for what this dish calls for. The ambiance was great and it was a really cute place, albeit a little pricey. I definitely wasn't unhappy with the restaurant, but I wouldn't recommend this dish. Next time I'm in Pittsburgh, I'll probably give it another go with a different dish. read more

Cool vibe here! Very chic decor. I have gotten seated at both the regular tables and the booths and the booths are definitely better. You sit up higher and can see more of the restaurant when dining. The linguine with clams and the sausage with vodka sauce is our go to. The potions are big enough to share. The meatball appetizer just says meatballs, plural, like there would be more than one, but it really is just one giant meatball. Which is fine and it was very good, just not what we were expecting. The lunch menu is different from the dinner, it doesn't specify that online, but it is limited. Good spot to start the night downtown and then bar hop after dinner! read more

Was back & forth on 2 vs 3, would do 2.5 if I could. Had we only been in for drinks & atmosphere could go with a solid 4. For my drink went with a blackberry old fashioned & it was good. Sadly, definitely can't recommend the pizza. I'd heard mixed reviews on the pasta (which some of the girls got rigatoni & enjoyed it, but for another it was cold & not flavorful). So, we thought you couldn't go wrong with pizza & 3 of us decided to split calamari, the prosciutto pizza, & margherita pizza. The calamari was dry and really not good. The pizzas were small and the toppings were good, but the sauce & especially the crust left something to be desired. It was like it was too oily and hard on the outside, but thick, condensed and doughy on the inside. Maybe just a fluke, but based on hearing from others' experiences here, maybe not. I try to be as kind & supporting of local biz as possible, but also need to be honest because we're all out here trying to decide where to spend our own hard earned cash for a great experience, so can't recommend the food based on our visit. I honestly don't get the hype. I'm usually pretty generous with giving good reviews for restaurants but sadly, this restaurant missed the mark. Here's why: - Reservation system: it's terrible. I used Resy to reserve a table for two. Since I wasn't able to find parking Downtown (common problem), my party and I got there later than we expected. I knew this could be an issue so I called the restaurant before we got there - the phone went unanswered, put myself on the waitlist on Resy and also booked another table via Google, just in case. Once I put added myself to the waitlist, I immediately got a text that the wait would be no longer than 15 mins. When I got to the restaurant, I was told I missed my reservation. Yes, that's true but the reservation system didn't have me on the waitlist and didn't get the second reservation I created!! Even after I got a confirmation that my party and I were put on the waitlist and had a later reservation, we were told that our information was never registered in the system. - Food: Since we were asked to wait in the lounge downstairs until our table was ready and had already ordered appetizers, I wasn't too hungry when it was finally our turn to order. I got the meatball small plate. The meatball was pretty large. Came on a bed of marinara sauce with pieces of toast. Well seasoned but the flavor was ...unremarkable, just okay. It's what's call 'edible' but not amazing. Some inner parts were slightly pink. Overall: The disorganized reservation system left a sour taste. This wasn't the first time this happened. I almost dined at this restaurant once before but left because the wait was too long. And the wait was too long - I think - not because the food is so good - it's because there aren't that many dining options available downtown Pittsburgh during the pandemic. Do I recommend this spot? Really impressed with Scarpinos! This was the perfect addition to downtown Pittsburgh, located where 10 Penny used to be. I love the inside of this restaurant. All the Tiffany lamps hanging from the ceiling, omg! *inserts heart eyed emoji here* We had a party of 4 for Valentine's Day weekend & made a reservation on Resy. We were seated right away. For appetizers, we had the meatball & the calamari, both delicious. The calamari came with what I'd like to describe as pickled vegetables? Sounds unusual but it was really delicious. I had the lemoncello martini which was really refreshing. As for entrees, 2 of us got the vodka sauce rigatoni and the other 2 people got chicken Parmesan. Both dishes were excellent! The chicken portion was huge. I'd recommend them both. In addition to dinner, we got 2 pizzas to go for later & those were really good too. Honestly, there was nothing about Scarpinos that we didn't enjoy. Our waitress was great & the manager personally came over to our table 3 times to make sure we were doing okay & enjoying the evening. We went to Scarpinos on a Sunday in August for our 12 year anniversary. We just wanted to pick a place that was Italian and had reservations, and we were so so pleasantly surprised! We had a wonderful booth and an amazing waiter. We started off with arancini. They were melt in your mouth wonderful. I will for sure get that again. For dinner we shared two dinners. We got rigatoni ala vodka, and it was so great until we had our other dinner. Cacio Pepe was unreal...AMAZING! I will get that for everyone even if I just get it to go to eat it another time. I went to dinner last night and treated my wife, daughter and her boyfriend. I had the $28 dollar chicken parmigiana dish. Dry as a bone. Overcooked severely. My wife had the mushroom artichoke pizza. Half the pizza had toppings and the other half had very little. Again, very dry with limited toppings. For 18 bucks she would have been better off buying a Red Baron pizza. I asked the waitress 3 times for the drink menu before she brought it out to the table. Disappointing to say the least. Dinner for 4 easily racked up over $200.00 bill. Every dish on our table was so underwhelming. My daughters dish looked like a hamburger helper recipe. I tasted it and it was bad. Now the bread is a 6 dollar array of burnt crust. Yes there was so much burnt on it I had to pick the burnt portions off. With all the great restaurants around that area go elsewhere. My girlfriend and I came here with our families to have a nice dinner before our soccer matches the next day! We were really craving Italian food, and decided to introduce them to Scarpinos, one of our favorite Italian restaurants in the city! I got my classic Pasquale Parmigiana, which comes with a huge chicken breast coated and fried in bread crumbs and topped with mozzarella cheese, served with a side of pasta and salad. This made for the perfect pregame meal, and the perfect all around meal! The chicken was super flavorful and the pasta tasted very fresh! The nice side salad gave a nice break from all the carbs and meat being eaten! My dad got the Branzino, which he had with only a tomato and grilled because of a special metabolic-reset diet he is on. The fish still came out super flakey and tender, and he was very pleased with it! My girlfriend got the Pappardelle, which was topped with a house made ragu. The noodles were definitely made in house, and the sauce had a very nice flavor to it! Also ordered, but not image, was the polenta, the Margherita pizza, the mushroom and artichoke pizza, the divola pizza, and the panzanella salad, all of which was delicious! All in all, we had another wonderful evening here at Scarpino! We highly recommend trying it out! read more
