I went with the Chicken Caesar Wrap, and it hit the spot. The woman working there was incredibly kind and welcoming. My order was ready in just two minutes, which was impressive. The wrap itself was basically a chicken caesar salad in wrap form, complete with croutons (which I don't usually care for), but they actually added a really nice crunch and pulled the whole thing together. Considering that I walk past all the other delicious Portland food carts without so much as blinking, Spoons receives an obligatory star-bump. And since I've already raved about their healthy lunchtime offerings, I will use this update to expatiate about the awesome folks 'behind the cart.' (I will then try to sell the rights to VH1, or perhaps the food network...) Derek the soup guy has a smile that could stop crime and his helper puts Mary Poppins to shame. They are far more similar to the Soup Fairy than the Soup Nazi, sans the creepy sneaking into your room at night and leaving soup under your pillow bit. They're so dang friendly that even after I have my meal in hand, I find myself blabbing away about the health benefits of lentils or how they managed to pack such a smoky flavor into a vegan soup. Fortunately for them, I am not their only loyal customer, and I am gently reminded to step aside so that others can experience the pure euphoria of Spoons -- or just get a cup of soup. These salads are bomb. Now you might ask, "what makes a salad so great?" Let me tell you. These toppings are made with love and are unlike many other salads. The croutons are large and flavorful, the tomatoes and cucumbers are fresh and bite size, and the red onions? They're.. pickled? Maybe? Just enough to be a little different in the salad, so it's vinegary ness is not overwhelming. The size of the salad is pretty substantial, and the price is great IMO. Highly recommend. I've never seen such a bad wrapping job on wraps, burrito, Gyro, etc...ever! I ordered a veggie wrap with avocado for $8.50 plus $.50 for credit card pay. But it didn't have avocado. The wrap was so hard to eat due to the bad wrapping job and I felt like I was mostly eating the tortilla. You can only eat so much tortilla and lettuces so I gave up half way. $9 for this is a joke. I was really excited to try the Southwest wrap. Lettuce, tomatoes, olives, beans, cheese, chips, red onions, and a chipotle lime ranch dressing. I ordered mine without olives and added chicken, bringing the $7 wrap up to $9. The flavor were good and ingredients were fresh. However, I was really disappointed that the wrap was 90-95% romaine lettuce. I was halfway through the wrap before I realized they hadn't actually forgotten the chicken. There were maybe 3 thin pieces in the whole wrap, for which I was upcharged $2. I think I counted 5 beans total. The staff were very friendly and the wrap tasted good, but the price doesn't justify the contents, especially compared to other food trucks in the pod. read more

There's nothing like a hot cup of soup on a cold day. Especially when you get it from a soup cart. The folks at Spoons like to think of themselves as "soup nazis", but they are far from nazi. They're simply too nice for that. These two kick out a new set of three soups every week-day for lunch. Along side these soups, they offer wraps and tasty salads. The soup and salad combo (with rustic Italian bread) is $6, and worth every penny. I can't even begin to catalog the variety of soups offered at Spoons, but they offer soups from all continents and all ethnicities. Paired with a nice hefty serving of Caesar salad, a cup of their hearty soup can't be beat. They use healthy, high quality ingredients, and the flavor shines through. This is some gourmet soup, but from a decidedly non-gourmet cart. Seek these two out amongst the row of carts near the US Bank tower on 5th off of Stark. Based on the reviews I was looking forward to a tasty salad here. I ordered th $7 southwest salad and added avocado and chicken. I was surprised that the add on items increased the price to $12. I reasoned that maybe they load it with both, so I paid and waited. I was so disappointed when I opened my salad. A couple of slices of slightly undercooked chicken and black avocado sat on top. I removed both and reluctantly dug in. Salad was bland, bland, bland. Very few kidney beans and cheese. The dressing didnt taste like ranch or chipotle. The only thing that made this salad interesting was the tortilla chips. I will not be returning. read more

I have been on a soup kick since moving to Portland, I pretty much try and order it with every meal and so far Portland hasn't let me down! Today as I was walking in downtown and passed food cart row I was hoping for a soup vendor and low and behold.....Spoons!!!!!!!!!!! I am having a tough time deciding between 3-4 stars. My soup was quite good but not fantastic. I have every intention of going back though. The bread that they give you was really great and I love how they made little cuts in the piece of bread to make it easier to pull pieces of it off. I got the red pepper and corn soup and I really liked it except for the heavy smoke flavor to it. I am just not a fan of smoky things but I am sure that some folks dig it. I was hoping that they had a better selection of soups but I probably caught them on an off day. The folks that work there are super nice, I love all of the soup Nazi papers that they have on the outside of the cart, especially since they couldn't be any nicer! They had some delicious sounding salads and wraps but I wasn't hungry enough to try them but certainly plan to try all of their stuff soon! read more

At the risk of tarnishing my track record of writing a 5-page long diatribe for each and every review I create - I'll step off my soap box and into a bowl or a cup of soup from Spoons. If you've ever wondered what it's like to eat a hug - this is it! In 40-55 degree weather and an abundance of rain here in Portland, my bowl of cream of spinach soup with its goat cheese crouton felt like I was holding a cup of heaven. I then realized I was making obscene noises and drooling profusely so I took my leave before I drove any of their business away or was asked to leave. The guy serving it was delightful and engaging and helped me pick the perfect soup for the type of day I was experiencing. Yes, yes I tend to be that annoying customer who asks "so what should I order?" or "what's your favorite?" to the servers. Some (rightly) look at me like I've lost my mind and some actually help me out and tell me. I've never been disappointed by using this ordering tactic and today was no exception. I eat at the food carts almost each and every day and have enjoyed just about everything I've had from them. This one just needed to be written about on a day like today (read "craptacular cold wet rainy train wreck") where you just want something warm and soothing. Mission accomplished! read more
