We hit this place up for Sonoma County Restaurant week and it was a great way to sample their wares.
We were a little confused on the entrance; we entered on the side and ended up at the front desk of the hotel instead of the maitre d' stand. So we had to wind our way through the diners to get up to the front, which was weird, but once there, they quickly welcomed us and assured us that "there are many ways to come in the restaurant", so we didn't feel like such boobs.
The staff from this point on were really were wonderful (Ross, our server, was so good!) and the ambience was warm and inviting. Food ranged from great to OK.
First, ambiance; unless you're in a shouting/party mood, skip the street side bar area and head to the back of the room for a Morrocan inspired lounging area. It has a weird art deco fireplace/burning bush thing going on and these colorful-stackable Morrocan style cushions arranged in a long settee,...sort of low to the ground, but very comfortable, and it was just a really nice cozy place to kick back and relax over a cocktail and have a conversation. Very romantic. They'll come and serve you in the area, no need to stand and order at the bar. So arrive a little before your dinner reservation and enjoy this spot out of the fray.
You also have the option to dine back here as well, which we took advantage of at this time of year. The front seemed noisier and the diners were in closer proximity to each other. In the summer, I'm sure I'd love the al fresco dining when they open their cantina doors, but in the winter it just felt close and noisy up in the main dining area.
Now for food; the prix fixe menu was a three course $29 appetizer, entree, and dessert. How cool is that, right!! Many of their options were regular menu items so we felt we were getting a real feel for their normal offerings.
Bottom line; there are some real winners, and there are some just misses. If you order right, you'll have a great experience, otherwise there are some disappointments.
For starters, I ordered the chicory greens with goat cheese and walnuts. My husband ordered the short ribs with celeraic puree. For some reason I thought the greens were sauteed and it would be a warm dish, but it was actually a salad and a non-descript one at that. This could be because the short ribs were such a sensation in comparison-fork tender and beefy...or it could be that it was just an uninspiring salad. Either way, it was like having Paris Hilton and the queen mum in the same room...I mean, I'm sorry, but I can't pay any attention to you because well, salad, you're just boring.
For entrees, the brick chicken is the way to go. A good sized half a chicken, nice glaze and slight moroccan spice mix served over couscous with almonds and golden raisins. Just very well done, delicious flavors and worth every penny. There was enough for me to share a good amount with my husband and not feel deprived. My husband ordered the pan-seared sea bass, and this was a nice piece of fish, well-cooked, but really needed a sauce, or more of whatever sauce it was supposed to have, to pull it all together. It just feel short as it was.
For dessert, our choices were a flourless chocolate torte or a almond biscotti flan. The flourless chocolate flan sounded like the winner, but it was more of a brownie, which is fine, but call it what it is because that's not what I thought I was getting. In contrast the flan, although kind of an off-putting grayish color, was flavorful and creamy, and it had an interesting corn bread with strawberry mousse side, so you had these contrasting textures and flavors. Very nice.
So bottom line, ambiance and service-great, but pick your way through the menu with caution and the assistance of your server. read more
