I used to love this local spot for dependable good Italian food. WOW...what a change. For the worse. I went to dinner at 7 on a Saturday evening and I was really disappointed from the very start. 1. Service: 1/5. the waitress literally slammed an unopened bottle of sparkling water ($6) in the middle of the table and left it unopened and we had to pour it ourselves. The waiter bordered on being outright rude and dismissive. 2. Food: Smaller portions, slightly higher prices and the lamb was tough. The salad left out th cheese and pear and left only greens and arugula. Bitter. No sauce fior the potatoes or lamb and the wine list (glass) was small. Price: $200 FOR 2,AND WE LEFT DISAPPOINTED AF. 3. OVERALL: 2/5. RATING. WOULD NOT GO AGAIN. AND THIS IS A PLACE I USED TO LOVE. They are phoning it in and skimping on ingredients and portion size. A great place to ruin your evening! If you love hearing "No!" At a restaurant, this is definitely the place for you I came to Speranza for my 40th Birthday dinner. Came on the actual day! Had a reservation, brought a super nice bottle of wine. Was immediately told they don't allow outside bottles. Was pissed, because it was my favorite wine, and I really wanted everyone to enjoy it with me. We all decided instead we'd just have water. Was expecting and very willing to pay a corkage, and would've had some of their wines to start too, but apparently this place doesn't like making extra money...? It gets worse! Wanted to order apps while we all caught up, order entrees thereafter. Nope! The server informed us they had to place the entire order - apps and entrees - at the same time. I've worked in many restaurants over many years. Literally never heard of this zinger! My cousin wanted primavera. Asked if he could add beef to it, perhaps the osobucco. No sir! Can't add a thing! Um...wonderful. Again they're just giving up money and pissing off customers for no reason Finally ordered, the server brought out bread for the table. Four inch long piece of bagget, cut into 3 1/2 slices....for FIVE people! FIVE. Asked the server if we could at least have enough bread so we could all have a piece. Was informed each table gets one serving.......I mean, we all ordered entrees. You'd think they could part with at least one slice of their store-bought bread for each person at the table. The server reluctantly brought us more. Once the burrata came, we realized we needed yet more bread, so we asked for another order. Six bucks. Six whole dollars they charged us for four inches of store-bought ciabatta bagget! Apps were actually quite good. Entrees dropped in a timely manner. Every single one bland. Now, I know you're probably thinking we were all just looking for more to complain about, but they were all for reals bland. All of us had to add decent amounts of salt and pepper for our entrees to be enjoyable. That's not great. How do you get Italian food so wrong?! We decided against dessert, for sure. Couldn't really handle any more abuse. When the server dropped the check, however, they brought us a small plate of complimentary cookies. Two of em. For five people. It really was the perfect insult to end the night Overall, one our servers was very sweet, the other (I think a trainee?) was meh. Corkage policy was trash, ordering policy was trash, guest accommodation was trash, bread service was trash, apps were good, entrees were extremely mediocre. I think this place is supposed to be "cool", hence the zero signage anywhere on the exterior of the restaurant. This place was unattractive- I am not sure what was off with it but I wouldn't wana go back here. The service was weirdly unfriendly, though you could tell that she had a fake smile. The sitting was tight, appetizer portions small, and overall I wasn't a big fan of anything I tried. We observed that they prioritized the delivery app orders, to the actual customer orders who were dining in like us. Some of our food came cold or lukewarm. I tried the prosciutto with melon , the artichoke and the bruschetta. I only like the bruschetta but I can make it myself too . The pastas were ok, I had the squid ink pasta with squid inside. It was so inky, my whole mouth and teeth were turned to black lol I enjoyed it but if you are considering to stay appropriate looking , don't order that . I also tried a bit of the lobster risotto ( I'm a big fan of both lobster and Risotto , but didn't like this dish - was bland and flavorless) Tried mushroom risotto - this was very tasty And the shrimp and asparagus pasta was tasty too . Very mixed experience. First, the good: nice ambiance (all/the majority of their seating is covered and outdoors), the tables for larger parties are spacious and well appointed (blankets and plentiful heaters). The food was pleasant enough - the squid ink risotto had the right texture and flavor, although the clams were a bit of a challenge to deal with (no bowl for the shells, no extra napkins for the black-ink-stained hands, etc.). Which brings me to the "bad" part of the night: the service. First of all, at this price point, while you might think it's charming/rustic to leave a bucket full of cutlery/paper napkins on the tables for self-service, you (the restaurant) should make an effort to make certain it's replenished appropriately, and that silverware is replaced as needed between courses. There was no effort to reset the table between the appetizers and the entrees, or to bus it. We had stacks of dishes piled up at various points, and our server could have cared less about that. She was not rude, but she was maybe something even worse - indifferent. When the much-vaunted 18-percent-that's-not-a-gratuity-padded check came to the table, our group was confused about whether we were expected to tip on top of it, but since we couldn't locate our server to inquire, we weren't encouraged to pile another 20 percent on top of +$450 of additional charges (yes, the food is overpriced for what it is, as the photos demonstrate - the portion sizes, other than on the pasta dishes, leave a lot to be desired; but hey, that's L.A. for you). Last but not least: we tried to inquire before dinner whether we were allowed to bring a bottle for a corkage fee, but we couldn't get through to a live person on the phone. When we showed up for our reservation and asked at that time, the host barked at us "NO OUTSIDE FOOD OR BEVERAGE!" Okay, we were just asking, sir. No need to be harsh about it. This was my first time ordering from Speranza on Hyperion Ave, inland. I was craving risotto--lactose intolerance be damned. When the craving hits, it must be honored. The last time I had truly great risotto was in Florence, at a tiny bistro tucked between the Duomo and the Gucci Museum. Or maybe it was at the Hotel de Russie in Rome--I can't remember. I was introduced to Negronis and had quite a few. Either way, the risotto was divine. When Speranza delivered their lobster and mushroom risotto, I opened the box and saw the portions--small. I said out loud, "These guys are cocky." Because for portions this modest, they must know it's good. And after the first bite? I said it again, louder: "These guys are fecking cocky." Such a fun and intimate little restaurant! The entrance was a little hard to figure out and when entering, we weren't immediately greeted or helped, which was also a little confusing, but we were still quickly sat on a Saturday night. Bread and water was already on the table and we were promptly asked if we wanted to order any appetizers. We went with the bruschetta, which was delicious and fresh. We were then asked if we were ready to order, and we decided on the bucatini and the pesto pasta. We didn't wait long before it came out and boy was the pasta perfectly al dente and definitely tasted handmade! My boyfriend noted that the pesto tasted very fresh! The bucatini was also very delicious and well seasoned. We also ordered tiramisu for dessert and that was also very yummy. Overall, the pricing for the quality of the food was great and the portions were perfect. They also have street parking nearby which wasn't too difficult to find either on a Saturday night. They made a mistake with our tables order but didn't acknowledge it. We had to ask multiple times where our order was. I love the fresh warm baguette style bread with the Olive Tapinade & marinara dipping sauce. I ordered the Shrimp & Asparagus Fettuccine in pink cream sauce...once the flavor hit my tongue it took me back to Italy with the perfection of the Al Dente Fettuccine and the sauce was perfectly seasoned! It reminds me when I was in Capri with the creamy pink sauce and homemade pastas I had a cute little restaurant. This definitely takes me back to the Amalfi Coast when I lived there for 5 months! Never coming back here. Had a reservation and was placed in the very back corner underneath the bar. The white couple behind us was a walk in and was seated Ina much nicer area where other guests were also seated. I didn't say anything about the table because I wasn't sure if there were other reservations but the section we were in remained empty the entire night. We were the only brown people as far as I could see and it was very telling that they did not care for us to have a good experience. No one checked in on us until they tried to take our food order in which I asked for WATER because we were seated for about ten minutes and we didn't have any water. I have worked multiple restaurants from a taco spot to high end, and this is the worst experience I've ever had. Once we got the food that was it. No one checked in to see if we needed anything or were enjoying the meal. We also had to get up and close out because clearly they forgot about us or just did not care. I felt like I was on punishment and on top of that the food was okay. Terrible establishment. Don't come here unless you're white! Much rather go to La Pergoletta. Let's start by saying if you don't know it's there, you'll miss it right in front of your face. when you get there you'll know what I'm talking about. Great for a romantic dinner or meeting up with friends, this place is it. This cute little restaurant serves some great Italian dishes. The pasta is cooked to perfection. When you sit down they serve up some delicious bread with two different tomato based spreads. Who doesn't love bread when you're looking at a menu and choosing a nice glass of wine (or two) to have with dinner. The lamb chops are always my favorite but I have indulged in the rigatoni a time or two. My friend had the lasagna which she loved. And another had the linguine with clams. The tiramisu was delightful and a nice touch to a beautiful dinner. They offer vegan and gluten free options too. The service is spot on. Every member of the staff steps up and helps out. It's rare to see that these days when at most restaurants when you ask someone walking by for something they tell you they'll get your server. I've been here quite a few times over the years and they have always been consistent. I met up with some friends there last night and it was their first time, they loved everything about it.
