Was lucky to find this neighborhood gem while passing through Norwalk for a wedding. Great donuts- the French Cruller was a particular standout. It was light and eggy, and with the perfect amount of light sweetness. I will dream of those crullers. The breakfast sandwiches were also filling and tasty. I walked into Speedy donuts last Friday morning to purchase a breakfast sandwich and a coffee. There was only one person ahead of me. I stood in front of the counter for awhile waiting for my order to be taken but I was not greeted and told to hold on for a second. At that point I went over to the resister and asked if I should order there. A woman said yes I can and then turned around to pick up a phone call. The other woman continued to clean off the counters and never asked if I could be helped. When entering an establishment where you are going to spend your money, you would expect to at the very least get a good morning, or I'll be right with you. Never got any of those so I left. Customer Service is always key! I left and went over to Blue Cactus grill where I was immediately greeted with a smile and asked how I can be helped. What a big difference! read more

I normally love speedy but today the service was just not it. I ordered to go at 10:40 and was told it would be a 25 minute wait, I had no problem because speedy has some of the best sandwiches around however when I got there after the 25 minutes I was told it would be a bit longer which I had no problem with. I sat at the counter as I waited and saw my ticket on their order thing. As I waited for my sandwiches I noticed that my order continuously got passed over despite me be next. Of course in the hard roll NYC breakfast sandwich world some people like big bready hard rolls with their breakfast sandwiches, and some folks like soft squishy ones. These are the latter: pillowy soft and almost croissant-like, they flatten a bit in the wrapper and are the perfect vehicle for the egg etc. Which brings me to the donuts: much much better than Dunkin! No. These are Old School donuts from the land that time forgot, except fresh. These are the Platonic Ideal of a Donut. I tried a French cruller and a custard filled donut. The cruller was a work of genius--light and eggy with a silken drape of milky glaze and so airy it nearly floated away. The other donut had a decadent, creamy, bourbon vanilla creme patissiere filing shrouded in a billowy envelope of yeast dough. Neither donut too sweet nor too heavy. I asked for a dozen assorted of the most popular donuts. The server, like Hermes, was fleet of foot, and courteous. And the prices! I got out of under 9 bucks! Donuts so delicious, I'm reminded of a famous Abe Lincoln quote--"The mystic chords of memory will swell when again touched....by the better angels of our nature." Speedy's is a shining gem of great simple food made well. Its obvious that the owners care more about what goes on the plate than the walls, but aside from stains of age, this place is very clean. Lets talk about the donuts, aka their name sake. EVERYTHING IS GREAT! My personal favorites are the blueberry cake and the lemon jelly. Tim who? Dunkin' what? And then there is the rest of the breakfast/lunch menu. Its simple, unadualtrated food, and good food at that. Granted the menu reads like any other deli, but doesn't detract from the quality. First time coming here; was pleasantly surprised! More seating than I expected. A group of young people were eating lunch, so it's good for groups to sit and not feel crowded or awkward. Wonderful iced coffee! Don't be throw off if it's not in a big plastic cup like dunkin. It's still great. Much better prices abd quality than any chain coffee shops. French crueller is a MUST.
