Our favorite place to eat! The pizza and wings are hands down the best in the tri-state area. We gladly make the drive from New York to Norwalk just to eat at Coals--it's that good! We first discovered Coals when they had locations in New York. After those closed, we happily started making the trip to Connecticut because nothing else compares. We've even celebrated special occasions here because the restaurant is spacious, welcoming, and has such a great atmosphere. The service is second to none. The owners are incredibly kind and welcoming, and the waitstaff is always friendly, attentive, and excellent. Coals is always worth the trip, and we can't recommend it enough! read more

First and foremost, Coals had several other locations and they shut down, but I'm honestly not sure why (could be due to the stove necessary for making this specific type of pizza, just brainstorming here). My mom had insisted on going here on Mother's Day. Fortunately, their Connecticut location was open and we went. Bianca, I believe as a manager and was super accommodating with my mom's 100 questions haha. We started with one of the salads and the brussels sprouts. Both were great, but the brussels sprouts stood out to me. As for the pizza, we got the Margherita, Rustic, & Bayside. All of them were great, but the Bayside had to be my favorite. The pistachio pesto and goat cheese went very well together. The Rustic was a close runner up- mushrooms and truffle oil are always a match made in heaven. The Margherita was a classic but with the style of super thin, almost cracker-thin pizza I preferred the other two more. I went in for a quick lunch and just wanted some good wings. To my surprise the wings were bait just wings they had honey maple rosemary wings!! It was hard to get back to work after tasting this delightful appetizer. It only took about 12 minutes of my time and I was out the door before I knew it! read more

This was my first visit to this location and it turned out to be a excellent experience. The taste and the texture of the pizza was spectacular. The pizza crust is very thin and crunchy good and the ingredients were fresh and delicious. Hailey was very welcoming and friendly. She was an exceptional hostess. Not your average pizza but my new favorite! Crust is very thin but crispy with a toasty char on the bottom. Toppings are fresh and interesting. Had the goat cheese and arugula. Not a fan of either topping but the combination proved outstanding. Added the maple wings and cilantro version. Both excellent with a crispy coating on the wings. Although billed as spicy the cilantro weren't especially hot. Large beer selection as well. We'll be back. read more

Coals had such a unique style of grilled pizza that was super thin and crispy! It was a good change up from normal pizza, and I really liked that I wasn't so weighed down after eating it. My favorite was the Dean Martin with huge slices of pepperoni! Whatever you do, don't sleep on their wings! The cilantro ones were our favorite, but the Buffalo and maple rosemary were fantastic too! Fresh salads, creative cocktails, and the Nutella pizza made for a great dessert. I love the quirky vibe with different paintings and memorabilia! Their salads, Brussels sprouts are terrific. We recently had guests come with us and they ordered their burger and raved about it. We love the pizza so much it is difficult to order something else. Overall: Coals is an eclectically decorated coal-fired pizza joint serving up bold flavors. Even if some don't jive the way they're supposed to, nothing came close to falling flat! Appetizers: Maple Rosemary Wings ($15) - Crispy and flavorful, though verging on overly sweet. Rosemary was subtle enough, it probably could be left out of the name, as the maple flavor dominated. Cilantro Wings ($15) - These were some of the best appetizer wings I've ever had, though they tasted more of a delicious honey mustard than they did cilantro. Delicious, but a misnomer. Entrees: Dean Martin Pizza ($18) - Topped with fresh mozzarella, tomato, pecorino, and basil, this margarita pizza had beautiful crust and the perfect saltiness from the cured pepperoni slices, which were generous and perfectly sliced. Squealin' Pig Pizza ($18) - Topped with fresh mozzarella, tomato, grana padano, bacon, hot honey, and scallions, this pizza had equally delicious crust, but the honey was not hot at all, and its sweetness was actually a tad overpowering, though tasty nonetheless. Marlon Pizza ($18) - Topped with fresh mozzarella, tomato, roasted peppers, arugula, pecorino, and spicy oil, this one had the kick that I expected from the Hot Honey, and was a delicious bite. Cheeseburger ($16.50) - This burger, while not outside the box or novel in any way, was cooked perfectly, juicy, hefty, and flavorful. A friend recommend i check this place out for there wings. We ordered 15 wings for take out, it was unfortunate that you had to pay an additional $1 for there signature sauce, and another $1 for blue cheese dressing, but we were ok since it was our first time and we were eager to try. Sadly we were let down. I preferred the taste of the buffalo over the maple rosemary. Over all the wings were very dry and tiny. I strongly recommend not ordering the wings and if your going to spend $1 on bleu cheese ask if they can fill it up all the way. The container was 1/3 filled. read more

I tried this place for the first time yesterday when I went out to dinner with friends and I went back again today for lunch. The restaurant itself could use a little bit of TLC, but the service was very good and the food was delicious. Their menu is not overly large and is a bit unique as their pizza and wings are both grilled. pizza does not look like the most appetizing pizza, but the flavors are all there. It was thin, crispy and slightly charred on the bottom. They have a few different options for toppings, and we tried a bunch, they were all very good. The wings were some of the best wings I have had in the area. I did not have to ask for them to be cooked well done all of the orders came out hot and crispy. I personally do not like the chicken wings are very large, and I hate when they are chewy. These were small, saucy, and super crunchy. They have three different sauces, buffalo, cilantro, and maple rosemary. The only negative I would say is that they don't have their own homemade blue cheese, and the Ken blue cheese just did not do it for me. read more

I heard this place was new, and I had to check it out. If you visit, make sure to pay the meter, they monitor this place like crazy (even 5 mins before they shut off for the night). This is a big place, and there are lots of seats and a full bar. It wasn't too busy when I visited, and I enjoyed a lovely glass of wine and ordered the Marlon. I loved how thin the crust was (it's seriously thin). The topping amounts were just right and were perfectly matched to the thinness of the pie. I took home the leftovers and heated some just a few hours later. I love that regulars followed them down from their old location and had stories to catch up on, but I wanted a second glass of vino! read more

Really didn't know what to expect at Coals for the first time, but we were very pleasantly surprised. Maine Beer Company Lunch on tap is a nice surprise! The Avery Chardonnay was very well received as well. For food we had normal buffalo wings that were fine and a beet salad that was amazing!. We then had 3 pizzas that were excellent. We had the Rustic with mushrooms, truffle oil and cheese (a white pie), the vegan which had cold hummas and veggies and was awesome and the red pie with bacon (Squealing Pig?). Service was excellent at the bar and we interacted with the host and a few others. Great people all around. Norwalk's parking plan is idiotic but we made it work. Why they limit people to 3 hours after 6 when there are tons of spaces makes sense only to a bureaucratic unthinking drone. I mean let's try to come up with ways to chase people out of downtown businesses, right? At least the app made it easy to pay them. The ambiance was very nice and the place got packed so the word is probably out that you can get some great food here. Note that it's not really a pizza in the sense of what you might be used to. For one, it's grilled and the crust is thin like a tortilla. There also aren't a lot of traditional choices, but what they do have is excellent! We're already making plans to return! read more

Let's start with the location, it's awesome! Was sad that fat cat closed, but thrilled a new spot came back. Too bad they don't play the amazing reggae though and frankly it's just a different vibe. I think we ordered the wrong pie's and they have more potential so giving them a 4 star rating for now. Depending on taste the next time it may become a 3, want to give a new place the benefit of doubt. Overall the grilled thin crust was really cool, super light and airy, nice crisp. The pizza itself though was mostly okay. Dean Martin was very good, but must have was incredibly bland and far from a must have. The pig one was good, not great. Maple wings were awesome! Pizzas weren't cut properly and it was a nightmare to separate. We ordered a salad that never came out. It was a Thursday night and they were pretty slow. I'll try them again and suggest that you give them a shot or two. read more

If you like hidden gems. Something off the beaten path. This is perhaps the greatest undiscovered pizza and beer joint you will find anywhere in the country, much less the Northeast. We first discovered Coals when they were in Port Chester and haven't looked back since. We have since moved away to California, but have just come back almost specifically to get our Coals fix at the new Norwalk location, believe it or not. We are so jealous that Norwalk gets to experience all that is Coals. And it all starts with Billy, the owner, curator, chef, and head artist. His specific ingredients and cooking style of everything on the menu are done with incredible care and artistry. The local craft beers on the menu are uniquely selected and completely unmatched in the area. And the atmosphere and eclectic style of the place creates a dining experience like no other. Never hipster pretentious, but everything is done with enough of a poke-in-the-eye to other establishments, that you feel like you're in on the joke and part of an exclusive club. Where else can you sit and listen to some obscure cover of James' "Laid" on the sound system, sipping from a can of Industrial Arts Monkey Wrench, eating maple-rosemary chicken wings that literally melt in your mouth, and have the most incredible thin crust pizza you'll ever experience in the Heaven Scent and Must Have? Everything - And I mean everything - From the thrift store art on the wall to the salad vinaigrette, is all unique and done with a chuckle, a wink of an eye, and true love. It's not just our favorite pizza place, it's our favorite restaurant.....in the country. It tastes good, but why would I ever get it again? The flavor of the Margarita pizza we got was good. But calling it "pizza" is misleading. Technically it's got sauce, cheese and toppings, but this crispy, very thin cracker-like flatbread is more similar to Matzoh Pizza than any Italian pizza I've ever had. If I'm in the mood for thin pizza -- that is still true pizza -- I'll be going to Colony or Sally's. read more

The place is adorable, the food and drinks were great and the service was excellent. We got the Classic Buffalo Coals Grilled Wings, Dean Martin and Squealin' Pig Pizza, and Nutella Pizza for dessert. If you get anything, get the wings (seriously, just made my top 5 and the crisp and sauce is so good). One of the owners came over and gave us a pro tip. We've been here several times already and have tried many of the menu items (Dean Martin pizza and Beet Salad are my favorites!). All delicious options and each pizza has its own distinctive flavors. We stopped in for a tryout. This place has a limited food menu. They offer more beers than pizzas and just typical restaurant wines. We had a salad and the squealin' pig. The salad was fine. Nice and clean and the smoke chilly vinaigrette gave it a good flavor. The pizza came to the table "warm." It had a very thin crust. Possibly pre-made or packaged. It looked like it was cooked on both sides and then the toppings were added. The tomatoes were cool and tasted like crushed canned tomatoes without seasoning. This pizza was never hot. The spicy honey oil gave it a good flavor. The environment was pleasant enough and the people were polite and attentive. I might stop in if I am in the neighborhood, but I wouldn't go to Norwalk just for this place. read more
