I came to Spa Space for a few reasons. It was near my office (plus!) they had a lunch time appt. available for a brazilian (plus!) and the yelp reviews were decent. I was seen by Maxine and the wax itself speedy and uneventful. Maxine was friendly and professional. She even showed me a picture of her super cute dog. The ONLY thing that keeps this from being a 5 star review is they don't use the hard wax. They use the soft wax with strips. Maybe I could have asked for the hard wax? I don't know. I guess I just assumed that is what she was using until she started removing it - and by then it was clearly too late. I prefer the hard wax because it is less painful. This was my first soft wax/strip experience and I was not a fan. Haven't decided if I'll go back - I'll probably search for a place near by that offers the hard wax. If you don't mind the soft wax, or don't know the difference, this place was great. read more

Bianca F. is the best!! I request her every time I get a no chip manicure and I am never disappointed. She is speedy but you don't feel rushed. While Bianca is working, you have her full attention and she makes you feel like you are her only client. Bianca will help you pick out what color is best for your skin type and makes sure you are not just satisfied--but love your nails. I always leave feeling pampered and more beautiful then when I walked in. Ask for Bianca and you will be happy you did! read more

I was just there and would've given the spa a 5 star if it weren't for one of my services. I got an Indian head massage by Jennifer Harris and it was absolutely amazing BUT my second service which was a 30 min body scrub by another therapist was the worst. He barely scrubbed my body and honestly I was about to have him stop so that I can leave rather than waste my time. Barely any massaging with the scrub. Wasted my money. read more

I've gotten several massages at Spa Space (The Indian Head Massage is amazing, and key to getting past a bad sinus week). I've always had a positive experience, especially enjoy the private steam shower after! Ask for Stacey! (male): This year I've had a lot of low back pain, it's complicated and I needed someone who could listen to the details and also feel what is going on, and respond with the appropriate level of pressure and therapeutic massage rather than a cookie cutter massage. Stacey was really helpful on my last visit. He took care not to exacerbate anything, and really helped loosen things up so I could continue my physical therapy! read more

The staff in the front is a turn off, almost makes me wonder why I come here. They're rude. They stared at me when I said no to a product. There was no thank you or hi. I'm not expecting a red carpet, but I do expect a greeting when I leave and when I enter. This is only getting 4 stars because of Indira- she's efficient and amazing at what she does. My face has been it's healthiest since I've start going to her. read more

Sorry Spa Space. I won't be returning. For a place that is supposed to promote relaxation, you sure managed to stress me out! =( Making the appointment was fairly easy. I told them that I wanted to treat my friend to a facial and massage for their birthday and that it was going to be their first time. I didn't ask for anything specific, but I was expecting them to at least say 'happy birthday' to my friend when we walked in. NO. Actually, no one said ANYTHING to us. The front desk people were chatting away when we walked in and didn't even acknowledge us until AFTER I gave them the stink eye for making me stand there and wait. (grr!) Even after checking in.. still no 'happy birthday.' I even saw it written in the book! Jeez! We went to sit down in a small seating area and filled out the paper work. No one offered us a glass of water or even a magazine! Boooo! Within the first ten minutes, I was already hating the place. When our aestheticians came out, one of them FINALLY wished my friend a happy birthday. Was it really too much to ask to make my friend feel a little special?! Whatever. The facilities are just okay. The facial and massage were decent but overpriced compared to other places that offer more amenities... like water and eye contact when you are speaking to them! I was too pissed to really relax, but the aestheticians were nice, knowledgeable, and not pushy about product. Luckily, my friend enjoyed the experience. I hope the front desk staff gets better. Because of them, they have certainly lost my patronage. read more

I have wanted to review this place for a long time. I have not gone there in about a year because I moved but for 3 great years I was something of a regular fan of massages at Spa Space, specifically with Deanna. She was wonderful and worth every penny. I highly highly recommend requesting her specifically, as she was wonderful. Very attentive to the needs that I had with certain pains, she even recommended great techniques for stretching and massaging in between professional massages to keep my pain and injury down. Yes I know a lot of massage therapists are like this, but Deanna was wonderful. Deanna always remembered me from the last time and asked me about the latest thing I had told her about, even though i was only coming in every few months. The spa itself is great, with a great locker room, lounge area, complimentary mighty leaf tea and great showers. The locker room is nice and understated and not too snobby for itself. If I could I would still be going there, so please someone out there go there for me and request Deanna.' Prices are reasonable and comparable to other massage prices in the area, especially for the care that you get. read more

Had a groupon to use up for Spa Space and it was for a microdermabrasion...now mind you, I have found a spa that I LOVE for microderms already (See Millennium park med spa) but I had to use up this groupon. I added on a facial too. Parking, I thought, was going to be a nightmare but instead it was quite easy on Canal street. Otherwise they have valet for $11. The spa itself is quite beautiful. Very clean, front desk staff was so friendly and helpful as well. I was escorted to the "lounge" and changed into a comfy robe..they offered coffee, tea or cucumber water while i waited... My facial/micro was done by Jai, a very bubbly happy lady who had great skin. She was really good at what she did, gentle and thorough with the microderm for sure...didn't really care to chat about my skin too much before hand, which was ok since the entire experience became relaxing. 48 hours later..my skin looks AMAZING...impeccable really. I definitely will recommend this place..they are a bit on the pricey side..but maybe I'll come back and try a body wrap or a scrub! It'll also be my back up place for facials! If this place does group events...definitely look into it, it would be a great venue for it! p.s. cash tips only! read more

I have no complaints about the ambiance or staff at Spa Space - both were really nice. My problem was that, once again, I found a spa that does bikini waxes virtually in the dark!! How is this logical? I went home and had to redo almost the entire thing myself - which begs the question why the hell pay someone to wax your nether regions if you're just going to have to do it yourself anyway? Needless to say, the quest for the perfect bikini wax continues.... read more

I cannot say enough good things about this place. I first came to Spa Space because my girlfriends gifted me a massage for my birthday. I had no expectations but the service was great from start to finish. I returned for a waxing with Camille and it was wonderful. I will be back in 3 weeks! Prices are very reasonable and the staff is so welcoming and knowledgeable. I am surprised nobody has mentioned the cucumber water. It is just what you need at the spa, very refreshing! read more

I love Spa Space. I first went in Feb 2005 when my husband and I had a couples massage + instructional lesson with the massage therapist. I've been back several times for pedicures and a facial. It is clean, quiet, relaxing and everyone there is always very nice. The prices are pretty much in line with whats reasonable for city spa services. I rec. this place to my friends looking for a spa- its fabulous! read more

I work across the street from Spa Space, so it is VERY convenient. But I won't go there again, which means a lot. I've had the Happy Feet pedicure several times there, and it changes each time. I think the pedicurist doesn't really know how to do it, or what is supposed to go into it. It's also very expensive, and is supposed to last 75 minutes, but never does. They skimp on the massage part (the only real reason to pay $95 for a pedicure). Also, I echo the many comments that the desk people are rude. Or at the very least, cold and unfriendly. Basically, this is an overpriced and not great spa. So, if you want a good spa experience, just pick another one. There are so many in the city, you don't have to settle. read more

I was looking forward to my spa experience here. We are out of town from Seattle and booked this for my birthday! We started off with couples massages, which were amazing. After we sat in the lounge waiting for 20 minutes, I had to ask when we were going to be seen for our private pedicures. She took us back, then I come to find out that we were not going to be seated in a private room like I booked a MONTH prior. No one had called 24 hours prior and let me know, no one had let me know until I was about to be seated in my pedicure chair. I then had to speak to the manager who gave us a discount and champagne. I started my birthday off stressed and upset because of this experience. The women who did my pedicure was more apologetic then the manager, she did an amazing job and was very sweet to me. It seems that everyone who works here, does their job amazing. The nail manager also came over and apologized and upgraded me to a gel pedicure for free. I appreciate everyone being so kind but sadly I can't say that about the manager. The bad customer service and lack of communication for a mistake has over ruled my experience. Customer service is very important to us, and I will not be returning to spa space. read more

Have had multiple facials and massages here, and I absolutely love it. They are always so considerate, and I always feel like my treatment is personalized to me! read more

I absolutely LOVE this place. Cucumber water upon entrance, friendly staff and beautiful decor. I guess the receptionist put us down for the "Art of Touch" instead of the couples massage, so they gave us some % off at the end for the confusion and $20 off our next visit. The teacher, teaching us during the "Art of Touch" sessions was very informative and nice. I learned a lot. Their showers are to to die for. Rain shower/steam room! What more could a stressed out gal ask for. I stayed in there for a good half hour. There are locks on the lockers with ample space for your personal belongings. Lotions, hairspray and deodorants if you forget anything. This place is simply delightful. One downfall is parking, there's plenty of it but it's only 2hrs. read more

Beautiful serene atmosphere. Loved the overall decor, the gift shop (I wanted to buy everything there!) and the friendly staff at the front desk. I was offered some delicious tea and sat down to relax with a magazine. Problem was I was relaxing a bit too long and hearing just a little too much staff gossip for just being in the waiting area...save it for more private areas where clients aren't privy to hearing what's going on please! My bikini wax was great. Highly recommend the staff for doing a phenomenal job and making the wax as "comfortable" as it can be. The estetician who did the deed was very knowledgeable and recommended several products for me to try (come check out nothing was waiting for me though so I made no purchases). I echo another reviewer...this is not the place to go for a pedicure. I'd asked for the full hour-long treatment but was surprised with a mini-pedi. My nail tech talked up a product I needed to try and gave me her private business card as well to contact her. I was rushed during the treatment so the technician's other client wasn't given to someone else. Terrible customer service. I'd go back again and try a facial, massage or another wax as the spa seems to thrive there. Make sure you communicate exactly what you want so you aren't surprised with a "mini" service like I was. read more

I've been here twice and I didn't like either experience fully. Each time I've gotten a package with massage, facial and mani/pedi. The first time I went, the massage was terrible. The therapist kept monitoring how I was breathing and chastised me every time I didn't breath how he wanted me to. I could tell he was a therapist about health but I was just there to relax and enjoy a good rub down --correct breathing or not. So instead of relaxing I'm concentrating on breathing right and listening to his exaggerated breathing example. Nice guy though. The facial I got next was ok but she didn't get all of my blackheads from my nose which was my purpose for getting a facial. The pedicure was done in a private section away from anyone else so I thought that was pretty cool and the tech was super nice. She didn't do a good job on my mani though. She didn't paint my entire nail. There were large gaps between the paint and bottom of my nail bed. I tried to brush it off as no big deal, but when my fiance noticed it I knew it was pretty bad. The second time I went I got the same package with different people and I thought it would be better since there are so many great reviews. I remember in the waiting/locker room, I overheard a woman tell her friends how terrible her facial was and I started to get nervous. I had the facial and it was indeed bad. My face was burning afterwards. Never experienced that anywhere. The massage was ok though it was more of a lotion down than a rub down. I didn't get a private pedicure this time which I was disappointed about on top of getting a nail fungus from it. I'm already hesitant to get pedicures in whirlpools for this very reason .......so this really made me upset. A lot of places clean the outer portion of their foot tubs but they don't clean the drain/tubing system portion well enough. I dunno, I think every spa has it's own style and what works for some may not work for others. read more

I could care less about posting comments about establishments, but...... I HAVE BEEN BLOWN AWAY BY SPA SPACE!!! Here is what led me to this point..... I enjoy reading reviews, but there aren't many things that I would strongly recommend or even make a review on. A month ago, I was given a gift certificate by my former trainer who moved away. He got the certificate for Christmas, but moved that week and couldn't use it. I already have an amazing massage therapist that is by my home out here in the burbs, so I didn't think that I would use the certificate, and especially since I was on here and saw mixed reviews. I came downtown for work the next week and two of my meetings got cancelled, because of flight delays. So, with the five hours I had to kill, I decided to try Spa Space out for myself....even though I anticipated that the massage could not even compare to what I am used to, especially the customer service I am used to. I was BLOWN AWAY, by the service, staff, and experience! I thought it was a fluke and gave it another shot the next week. Same result! I have been there seven times with three different therapists in the last month. I have been to a couple places in the city for massages, but this place is by far the best! I am sure that my massage therapist out here is not happy, because I don't see her as much as I used to. So, I needed to write a review and clear the air to anyone who was on the bubble, like myself! SPA SPACE is a top of the line spa!! read more

I don't love Spa Space. In fact, I downright dislike it. I suppose if you haven't got much to compare it to, it might be great. But everything about this place feels commercial and mediocre. I don't get the love, girls. My first appointment there was for a deep-tissue massage. Things started off okay--the front desk was fine if nothing special; the waiting area was fine if nothing special; the robes were fine if nothing special; etc. However, things went downhill as soon as we left the waiting area and had to walk in our robes out past the front desk to get to our appointment rooms. That put me off slightly, but no big deal, I thought. Then I realized that my room was RIGHT UNDER THE STAIRS. Yes. Meaning that during my entire 90-minute massage, I had to listen to the pitter-patter of not-so-little feet thumping up and down the stairs. Annoying, but I'm a laid-back person, and I could have been okay with it. After all, I wasn't there for Enya vibes and Swedish relaxation--I was there for the kind of deep-tissue that hurts so very very good. But oh, oh, oh, was my masseuse a WUSS. I left feeling like nothing had happened. No worked-over feeling. Nothing. I've had better massages from my rather endearingly inept husband. And I paid how much for that? I thought to myself, huh, maybe I just got unlucky. So I booked a hot stone or somesuch pedicure with a name that conjured up luxury and relaxation--neither of which I got. This time, my room was--surprise!--again right under the stairs. Yay for me. I was also less than thrilled to realize that I was sharing a jumbled, loud, poorly decorated room with another patron. My irritation increased when the two women performing the pedicures chatted with each other throughout. I understand it gets boring filing people's feet, ladies, but I am not there to listen to you talk about your evening plans with your friends. Still, I would have forgiven that and even considered it cute if the pedicure had somehow made up for it. But of course, it did not. Everything felt rushed and slapdash. The massage was noncommittal and brief. My feet, which admittedly were in serious need of a pedicure, were still rough when I left. (I have had MUCH better results from pedicures at little hole-in-the-wall places that charge less than a quarter of what Spa Space does.) Granted, the color on my toes was great, but is that to recommend in a spa? I can't imagine going back. There are a lot of good spas in Chicago--why give Spa Space your money? read more

When I walked into Spa Space I thought to myself, "What a mess!" The place seems to be cluttered with boxes and merchandise. For someone who likes simplicity and organization, I found it irritating and not relaxing. I did not have an appointment, but they were still able to get me a session with a masseuse. I was less than enthused with the locker room, it seemed small and cramped. There was another woman in there so we were attempting to get around each other while taking our clothes off. Awkward... I thought the relaxation room was kind of worn down, and the massage room was pretty simple and small. Rachel gave me my massage and she was great about meeting my specific needs (she helped soothe my tension headache I had for a week straight). It was a bit annoying though that for most of my massage I had to listen to people in the hallway have a conversation. I would go back if I had a coupon or they were running a special, but I don't think it is the best place in Chicago for a spa day. read more

Massage mastery at Spa Space - from the men I'm a long time customer of Spa Space. I can't even begin to estimate the amount of services (and $$'s) I've spent with them - and the experience is always very good. Though, for reasons that I can't explain I have never felt compelled to write a review on Yelp, until today. I'm writing this review about the Male Masseuses at Spa Space. This isn't to say that their Female counterparts aren't great too - but my guess is that most women customers feel more comfortable with a female providing treatments - so I just want to focus this review on services from the men. I'm female (you probably already figured that out from the comments above but just to confirm). I don't really have a preference for massages - male/female - as long as I can get the appointment at the preferred time. I have had several massages from men at spa space -all great. I can't remember all of their names - but trust me -they're good. Today I had a massage from the best - Grant. Oh my he's amazing! Even as I type this (hours after my appointment) I still feel like an overcooked piece of pasta. He's accommodating, interested in focus areas, etc. I told him mine (the usual, shoulders, lower back, legs, etc). Then he got to work. Head to toe - hitting all the pressure points, working through all of the knots methodically - he was amazing! Overall I enjoy the spa. As many have already mentioned, the relaxation areas for before/after the service is good (I love the cucumber water too!). I like the facials and the pedicures are just above average (I usually get the pedicure for convenience because I'm already there for another treatment). And I agree with many other reviewers who mentioned feeling pressured to get product - especially during facials. Generally I don't mind (of course, any of us can say no to their suggestions) - but their recommendations do seem a little pre-meditated(I'm sure they get commission for the sales). I love spa space and if I had written this review before today I would have given it 4 stars just to be a little pragmatic - but Grant sealed the deal for the 5. read more

i love this place! you can come early and just relax until it's time for your massage. i was asked if i would like something to drink... i accepted the green tea. i got a gift certificate here so i treated myself and my friend to a massage. we waited in the dark and peaceful lounge area. my masseuse picked me up and led me to the room where i would receive my massage. the bed was toasty warm so that i didn't feel cold. she was extremely friendly and asked me for my preferences. the pressure she used felt oh so good... and of course, all good things must come to an end. i LOVE rain head showers. its basically a big shower head directly over your head. It pours over you and lets gravity do its thing instead of traditional shower heads that hit one side of your body. And this time, i discovered the steam button! (its a button that says on/off). YOU CAN NOW HAVE A PERSONAL STEAM?! thats awesome!!! (i'm easily amused..) the thing i love the most about this place is that you can take your time. other spas i went to give me half an hour to take a shower, dry off, get changed and get out so that they can use the area for their next appointment. how is THAT relaxing?! spa space has a changing area similar to high school locker rooms... but nicer. they let you take your time and provides condiments like shampoo, condition, shower gel, lotion, makeup remover, hair spray...etc so that you can look and feel fabulous even after you leave. note: CASH TIP ONLY. read more

I've been going to Spa Space for 10+ years. The Space is clean, calming, and relaxing. Professional staff. Every month they offer specials on some of their services, so I'll try different facials and pedicures. I mainly go for manicure and pedicure and Bianca is my favorite. I have extremely dry skin and she's given me tips that helped my feet and cuticles improve. And I always have fun with her picking out different nail colors and chatting read more

This was our 1st time here (couples massage and facials) staff were very friendly and professional, especially our masseuses... Awesome experience. I went to Spa Space for a mani/pedi after hearing my boss talk about it all the time. So coming in with high expectations, I was surprised to find them met completely. I was greeted when I came in, the atmosphere was posh, yet approachable, relaxing and friendly. I was offered a beverage and felt very comfortable. I had Bianca for my manicure and pedicure and seriously, she was fantastic. I am not normally a salon/spa small talker. However, Bianca not only did an amazing job on my nails, but she was so warm and lovely that she made my experience not just good, but wonderful. I will definitely be back. read more

Several years ago, I visited Spa Space for the first time. The treatments were fine (not great), but the front desk staff was pretty awful. The details escape me, but I know it resulted in some sort of refund. However, I really liked their lounge/locker room area, and since it had been recommended to me by a trusted source, I recently decided to give it another try. I'm happy to say I had a great experience there. I booked one of their packages, which kept me there for most of the day (eight hours?!?), so I feel like I got a good feel for the place and the staff. Everyone I encountered was friendly and helpful, and the services were all good. I had my first hot stone massage, which I didn't love (maybe personal preference), but the Indian Head and Neck Massage and Reflexology session I had with Adina was a revelation. She clearly takes her practice seriously, and does a fantastic job. The facial was well done, I just don't happen to be a lover of facials. The nail salon was very comfortable, and the mani/pedi services were good. I'll go back to Spa Space! read more

I finally got around to using the gift certificate for the Signature mani and pedi I got for Christmas, and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The reception staff were great, despite the fact I grabbed a last minute appointment for 6pm on a Friday (with a gift certificate no less.) I was assigned to Olga. She helped me pick my mani and pedi colors, didn't rush me at all (again, despite the fact that I was her last appointment, coming in at 6 on a Friday), and was HILARIOUS, and great fun for the 2 hours she spent buffing, massaging, trimming and polishing my digits into some semblance of feminine beauty. In fact, she did an awesome job. My feet have never been so smooth, and my generally blah, nub-nailed fret fingers are just as pretty as those on my pickin' paw. Okay, alliteration overkill. I'm just saying: I'll be back. read more

I got a massage here right around Christmas time so I could unwind and hang out with my family without having to work and stress. It was just an OK experience. First of all, if you decide to come, be prepared to deal with the two Trixie girls that work at the desk that stare you down when you come in. I walked in and they acted like they could barely be bothered to look up from whatever Lindsay Lohan gossip website they were on. I had an internal laugh at these two but I'm assuming other people may not think they are so funny. The massage was good, not outstanding, but good and was actually the best part of the place. The facilities and everything else were OK also...but just OK. That's why next time I get a massage, I'll most likely try someplace else. read more

Reception is a little cool, imperious. I had to fill out a form before my massage and I'm not sure what some of the questions had to do with giving a proper massage. The locker/waiting room is a little odd. there's only one changing area, and the instructions to the lockers was confusing; I mostly had to figure it out myself. I was given a robe to wear, and then taken through the front, public area to meet my masseur and go to the massage room. That was a little disconcerting. But the services themselves....oh, heaven. I had a 90-minute deep-tissue massage by Doug, which was truly wonderful. He concentrated on the problem areas that I indicated and adjusted pressure as requested. It was truly the best massage I've ever had. I then had a Happy Feet pedicure and a vanilla-almond manicure. Both were exceptional. My feet and hands look lovely, to say nothing of my nails. I'm looking forward to going back. read more

Spa space is my favorite go-to spa since I moved to Chicago over 5 years ago.
