My boyfriend booked a massage for me for our anniversary and this sadly was by far the worst experience I've ever had at a massage parlor. The woman was so rough that she left me a bruise! She basically raw dogged me lol little to no oil and to top it all off, she literally climbed on top of me, knees in my calf's and then knees in my butt. I was so sore for the following 4 days. Couples massage. Had plenty of massages before. It was not really worth the price. I asked my masseuse to go deeper pressure multiple times and didn't feel any difference. The arm massage was nice and the towels also, but that's about all. My masseuse spent a lot of time putting creams on and walking around, not on massaging. It's a small place. Feels too stuffy on the inside. Beds were ok, not really anything exceptional. Wouldn't go back for the price. read more

I made my appointment over the phone-also very simple. Check in experience *quick and easy. Suzie was so friendly, took my temperature and was certain to ask the screening questions pertaining to COVID-19. She welcomed me, showed me where the restroom was. Waiting room was clean, peaceful and offered water and mints. My wait was less than 5 minutes. Massage experience *I usually prefer male massage staff and I usually book deep tissue massages, however I've also had female staff before with much strength. In reading reviews, Paola was an extremely popular staff member, so I requested her. She is an absolute wizard. She is very professional, upfront about asking what the customer is looking for, kept the small chat to a minimum and went about her magic. She's a natural...she knew by feeling on my body where the tensions spots were. She has a perfect balance of strength, knowledge of when to apply pressure and when to be gentle. There have been times in the past when I almost felt like massage staff would murder me with their elbows, but Paola is a classic trained professional. I had such an amazing first time here. Kate did an awesome job. The only thing that kinda sucked was that I had to wear a mask and I couldn't even smell the aromatherapy and felt sort of suffocated during the first part of my massage. However I understand these are the times we are living in now. The front lobby was so warm and welcoming - such a nice front desk girl, and there was hot apple cider and water offered. First experience at Pause (River North) location and I'm already checking my calendar to book my next appointment. First of all the receptionist Jessie was such a breath of fresh air. From the moment I came in she was so friendly and personable within a minute I was chatting with her like she was one of my girlfriends. I had a 50 minute relax massage with Natalia and she was wonderful! I've been having pain from stress and computer monitors on my upper back and for the first time in my massage experience she actually focused a good amount of time in the problem area I communicated to her before we started (most places ask but I've never been satisfied with the amount of time they actually spend focusing on that area). Her technique which was applying the perfect amount of pressure and moving my arms and legs around to hit stiff points of my body left me feeling better than I have ever after a massage. Natalia was also beyond respectful and communicative to make sure I was comfortable. A side note to the reviews regarding the size or appearance of the River North location - if you're looking for a massage in a big posh place then book the Streeterville location... there are plenty of photos of both locations on the internet and their website, simple as that. And if the fact that it's "underneath" another business bothers you idk what to tell you, this is Chicago... garden units exist for businesses and apartments . I personally found the river north location quaint and it certainly didn't impact the quality of my massage or overall experience, if anything it was exactly what I needed. read more

Came here for a massage - they have a very convenient booking system on their website that is worth checking before you try to walk in. I was able to book an appointment two hours in advance. The entrance looks a little sketchy - exterior is an awning with makeshift-looking signage. Definitely not a luxurious spa but once you get past the sketchy exterior, the interior and rooms look very clean with a minimalist aesthetic. The massage rooms are simple and very relaxing, with some music playing in the background and dim lighting. As an FYI the prices on the website are inclusive of tax, and they have some specials on their website if you come during the weekday morning. The main reason for the three stars: I usually try to get in 10 or 15 minutes before my appointment, especially a new place, to make time for any waivers or forms I need to fill out. There was no one at all in the lobby when I arrived with all the doors were closed, so post the sketchy entrance I was very confused sitting in a completely empty lobby for 10 minutes wondering what was going on. Someone came out on the hour sharp when my appointment was supposed to start to give me some forms. We ended up getting started ~6 minutes late even though I filled out my forms quickly as I could, and despite that the massage also ended ~5 minutes early for no reason. They have small digital clocks in the massage rooms so this is pretty obvious to everyone, so an hour ended up being more like just shy of 50 minutes. The price is more affordable than other places (there are a lot of options in the $70-100 / hr range) but most places charge less for a 45min option so it was a little annoying to have the time be cut short. The massage itself was great - Summer was my masseuse, and she was very relaxing. I would highly recommend her. You take your clothes off, but they cover you with a fuzzy blanket which was very comfortable, whereas a lot of other massage places use sheets or towels instead. I do not like intense pressure and thought she was at a good level, although people who love intense pressure may not like it. I got the combo which was a little more on the Swedish side, with some focus on knots. I felt like there was adequate work on the tension without the massage being an unpleasant, painful experience. Summer was very good at listening and incorporating feedback on pressure and focus areas, and making sure I was comfortable. read more

This is my third or fourth time at Pause. I've returned multiple times because of the skills of the staff. This massage visit this morning was immature at best. While the staff person was very pleasant and nice, my Combo massage was not quite there. How I can describe my massage - It felt like I was just being slapped abruptly on with lotion and just rubbed it in. Timing was off as well. she spent like WAY too much time on my right leg. She just kept circling the one random spot on my shin. It was very odd. There was no rhyme or reason or method to the massage. She was just randomly everywhere - no pattern. I was jerked around, this wasn't a smooth, tranquil, relaxing environment. She jerked me around and the table as well - it felt hurried and abrupt. I was going to just ask her to stop by. Everytime I was about to, she finally slowed down a bit and i would relax. And then it would start up again. Overall, this massage was was immature at best. I'm very disappointed with Pause for allowing this staff member to service others. I'm now debating if Pause is still should be my go-to for massages because this experience was no where near relaxing and overall abruptly and confusing. read more

Whoa. Just . I stayed at a hotel nearby and as a companion had one of those 'you move you die' kind of whole body migraines. They were the closest parlor within walking distance so I stumbled there in freezing rain and entered *a very easy to miss* basement entrance that upon entering (after passing it twice) was warm clean and cozy. My massage was even better. They had no candles lit (for those with scent, chemical and smoke allergies) and allowed me to test their massage lotion on my skin before we proceeded. That migraine went from hell with sharpened knives on a scale of 1-10 to about a 3 and my mood went straight to heaven after that burden had been lifted. I asked for a deep tissue but I suspect some reiki techniques were in there. This woman knew her stuff!!! I did get rushed out rather quickly because she had clients waiting (I hate that; you get this even at higher end parlors when they're steadily booking; I mean c'mon. Build in a 10 minute window so people can take all of their relaxation with them...) but I was content. Floating on a cloud. Checkout was efficient and simple. Every one was pleasant to the weirdo walking in with dark shades and a flat emotionless expression and barely audible voice. read more

As tourist in Chi Town- the first day we were here we literally were up for 32 hours straight and had be going around the city by foot, taxi cab, public transportation by the second day we're like omg where is there a massage place!? The place makes the most of their space by creating a private ambiance. You go into your individual room and the light is dimmed, while soothing music is playing and you get completely undressed other than your undies so your girl can massage you. I tried soo hard not to fall asleep but I did. Woops! Afterwards I was given a glass of water and waited for my friend to finish- their were plenty of magazines for me to read. Kate is a very nice person, and sincerely interested in doing the best job that she can do for you. She checked with me on things like pressure, which parts I do and don't want massaged, and how things were going. The receptionists are also nice and welcoming. The negative is that I don't think there are any showers there and it doesn't feel great to put street clothes back on over a greased up body at the end. read more
