I've been coming here about a year (and have a monthly membership now). I love deep tissue and pressure to get out my problem spots. Both Meerim and Bernadette are fantastic. I've also tried the Kobido face massage, which really helped with TMJ. I wish the buccal massage could be an add-on to the regular massage bc it is so effective at creating jaw tension release. I've also tried the other location in River North, and even though that one is closer to me, I didn't have as good of an experience with the massage therapists and opt to come to this one instead. For my birthday, my spouse gifted me an 80-minute massage at Ori Massage on Ontario. I carefully noted where I needed emphasis in the pre-appointment client form, and repeated those requests directly to the massage therapist at the start and again during the session. She didn't listen. Instead, she spent an excessive amount of time massaging areas I hadn't prioritized and gave short shrift to the areas I specifically asked her to focus on. I left the appointment in knots, and far more stressed than when I arrived. The receptionist apologized, but still required full payment of the $175, with the card my spouse left in file. The only remedy offered was a complimentary "add-on" at a future visit, likely worth $10-20. That did not meaningfully address the situation. For service of this quality, I would have expected a partial discoun at minium, or ideally that the visit be comped. Requiring full payment for a clearly unsatisfactory and subpar service left me feeling ripped off. What made this especially disappointing is that I get massages regularly and know what a good, responsive therapist feels like. This wasn't that. It felt like she was following her own routine rather than doing what I requested. Ironically, later that day I received a pedicure and got a more effective massage from the complimentary massage chair. At this price, clients should expect a therapist who listens, responds, and adjusts accordingly. That did not happen here. Based on this experience, one star is generous and does not accurately reflect the quality of service. read more

My husband and I have been coming to Pause (Ontario) location for 3 years now. I always book with Janelle and he has always booked with Bernadette. Both are fantastic and highly recommend a massage with either person. They are very focused on our problem areas and we always leave feeling amazing, refreshed and relaxed. Janelle has been very mindful and is a great communicator. She has been the only person I trusted for massages during both of my pregnancies and has made me feel extremely comfortable. The pressure and massages provided has helped relieve specific problem areas in my back during my pregnancy and she really targeted the tension and pain well. It's a great place and the consistency of the staff and massages are always appreciated. The waiting area is okay - simple with nothing crazy going on. There are products, water and some hot apple cider which is always nice while you wait. One thing I love is that no one makes a huge sales pitch to buy products. Products are there if anyone is interested but it's not a focus on their business - definitely massage focused. I have had massages all over the world at different price points. This was the worst one I have had. A lot of it has to do with the table. The table gave me terrible neck stress and sinus pressure. When I rolled over the table was almost hard. I walked out in worse shape than when I went in. Not relaxing. Music was too loud. Technique ineffective and did not get me to a relaxed state. I recently ended an entirely too long situationship with the Devil. I vowed to never let a man touch me again. When I called to make a super last minute appointment, I was informed that the only available appointment was with a male therapist. I am a woman of my word, but my body was holding so much tension everything hurt and I was like, fine. The reception area is very cute with water and warm cider. The beautiful receptionist with the red and black locs ( sorry I don't remember your name!) laughed at my horrible jokes and was so kind. Jeff had availability. Thank you, Jeff for answering all of my questions and for not giving up on me and all of the obnoxiously tense muscles in my body. For asking if the pressure was suitable and checking in with me when I was holding my breath instead of breathing. Also, I mentioned to Jeff that I often feel really sick after a deep tissue massage and he recommended that I soak in an epsom salt bath when I got home. Game changer. This is one of the best massages I've ever received. You've restored some of my faith in men, and will be the only man I allow to touch me for the rest of 2023. So yeah check out the spa. Just gliding her hands is something anyone could do but I came here to be relieved of pain and stress and I went home to massage my own legs. I got up from that table and felt like nothing happened. I thought I'd review by comparing it to Massage Envy a block over on Ohio St. I had massages at both places within the past 2 months. Here is my review in terms of ambiance, price, and people: ~ambiance- neither was up to par for me. I paid extra for aromatherapy and it was forgotten until 20 minutes in at ME and added-on upon entrance at Pause because I didn't think the room smelled good without the added purchase. ME had a lounge with low lighting and clam music which I couldn't really enjoy because the other customer in the room was on her phone despite the sign. This lounge is separate from the lobby where you pay. Pause is very bare-bones. One entrance with a counter where you pay and also wait, taking in the frenetic energy of downtown Chicago just outside the window. Bonus points for ME for that lounge. Bonus points for Pause for selling cute, original products and providing warm apple cider. ~price- both are quite pricey and every minute counts. I paid for a 60 minute massage at ME and was picked up from lounge at 3:16. The walk back to the room down a long corridor, consultation, and underdressing, took up another 10-15. TIme on the table in an actual massage was more like 45 minutes. I paid for I believe the same length then asked my therapist to add on more minutes (I know, that is probably not supposed to be done but luckily I got away with it). ~people- I am a straight female. My therapist at ME was male so I felt slightly uncomfortable. However, innuendo is an occupational hazard when your line of work entails your patient undressing. My therapist at Pause was a female. I felt more comfortable with her. They had different techniques and I liked hers better. I am an English teacher so I listen to words people use - she used more language of a trained professional and gave me more commentary on what she was feeling in my muscles. I really liked that. She also targeted the areas I requested more than ME. Overall, I am more likely to return to Pause, but I have one more ME gift card to use. I plan on requesting a female therapist. read more

I had terrible low back pain and once my massage was over my pain was relieved as she was very knowledgeable on how to release the pain and tension. My first time at Pause Massage. Location: great location, close to everything Ambiance: the place is clean and modern. It also smells great. They have water and warm apple cider right when you walk in, which is great. Room: very clean, although it would be better if there's more hooks/hangers for your clothes. Also, the head rest is a little small, it was so hard to breath after 30 minutes facing down. Massage: I was looking forward to the massage after reading so many good reviews. However, it was okay. Kate is very very nice, and she did check in with me a few times to see if the pressure was okay. I wanted a deep tissue massage, and I wanted DEEP and PAINFUL, because my neck and shoulders are extremely tight. However, she didn't apply enough pressure at all, mostly very superficial. Also couldn't find and work on my knots. She mostly stretched out my muscles, massage superficial tissues and drained the lymphatics, which is good. But all my knots and tenderpoints are still there after the massage, so of course muscle tightness come back shortly after the massage. I really like the place itself overall, but I wouldn't recommend the massage for someone with very bad tightness and muscle pain that's looking for a deep tissue massage. If you're looking for just a regular massage, this is the place. read more
