The food was good but the service is ass. We got sat with no menu and there was no one to serve us for at least 10 minutes.

In my never-ending search for delicious Pho and Bánh Mì in the San Antonio area, fate guided me here. I had initially tried to visit another Pho place that I had been wanting to try. However, it just happened to be closed for some unknown reason, even though Yelp and Google both showed that it was supposed to be open. Nevertheless, I looked to Yelp for some help. I searched other noteworthy Pho places nearby and SP was just down the road from where I was at. Upon arrival, the parking lot was pretty packed. It does appear to share the parking lot with a couple different businesses, and there are not a lot of spots, and some are reserved for said businesses. Otherwise, you can park in the adjacent Park North lots and just walk over. The cafe itself is not very big, but it has a cozy feel to it, and it happened to be bustling on this day (which seems to be common, as I have noticed on subsequent visits). After being seated, we perused the menu. There are plenty of great options for food and drink, and they all sound delicious. However, I was here for the aforementioned Pho and Bánh Mì. I usually like to get Pho Gà, just because I enjoy a lighter, cleaner broth Pho. I always like to taste the broth before potentially adding any of the accompanying garnishes. So far, this is probably my favorite broth that I have tasted since transplanting to Texas. It was very rich and flavorful. Also, the chicken pieces were nice, and poached very well. I find that most places have either the slices, which can be tough and rubbery or they have chunks that are stringy and tough. I also ordered a grilled pork Bánh Mì, and it did not disappoint. The pork was very flavorful, and had a nice little char on it. The bread was nice and soft, but had a crispiness to it, as it should. Overall, I place this spot high on my list, and I will definitely be a regular. read more

SP Cafe is one of those low-key spots that truly delivers where it matters most: the food. The pho here is absolutely authentic, with a rich, flavorful broth that's easily some of the best I've had. You can tell it's been simmered the right way--deep, comforting, and full of flavor. I also tried the beef stew soup, and it was incredible. Classic, hearty, and perfectly seasoned, with tender beef that just melts in your mouth. It tasted like the kind of dish that's been perfected over time. The Vietnamese sandwiches were just as good--fresh bread, well-balanced fillings, and packed with flavor. The inside of the cafe is small and nothing fancy, but that honestly adds to the charm. This is a place that focuses on great food rather than appearances. They also have some of the best soups around and a solid selection of milk tea drinks that are definitely worth trying. The menu is huge, so there's truly something for everyone, whether you're in the mood for soup, sandwiches, or drinks. Prices are very reasonable, especially for the quality and portion sizes. I'll definitely be coming back again--SP Cafe is a gem if you're looking for authentic Vietnamese comfort food. read more

If you see pate so (meat pie) in the display case to the right of the cash register, please grab them. It's only $4 for one! Call ahead so they'll have food ready for you for pick up. You can also dine in and they'll bring food out to you after you order at the counter. The staff is very friendly and willing to answer any questions you may have. We came in for lunch, I ordered pho with beef round and tofu, it had great flavor and the servings were huge had enough for left overs. My mom ordered the vermicelli noodle salad with chicken, that was also a large portion and very tasty. We also ordered the cucumber lime drink (sweet and refreshing), strawberry cheesecake shake (had chunks of cheesecake and strawberries throughout), avocado smoothie (sweet and light flavor) and the crab rangoon (crispy and fresh). I haven't been back here in such a long time but I'm so glad I circled back because my visit was great! The service is quick and friendly, everyone who we interacted with was very kind. I ordered a passion fruit juice, tofu spring rolls, vegetarian pho, and my husband ordered the brisket pho. We were super impressed with how fully loaded both of our bowls were. A friend of mine recommended SP Cafe for Bo Ne when I told him my husband was craving it. Ever since we came back from VN, it's been difficult to find good Bo Ne with the same flavors. We've tried a few different places in Houston but not only was it not the same, it's also like $25 each. Well my husband definitely approved SP Cafe's! He said it's been the best one he's had so far after coming back from VN 2 years ago. I wanted to get Bun Bo Hue but they didn't have it that day. So I got Hu Tieu instead. Went again today, grilled pork sandwich did not disappoint! However, strangest thing... apparently they gave me the combo which was sandwich + shrimp roll. I had already started eating my sandwich and the lady came out to ask if I had the combo, I had no clue. Figured it out with the waiter, I didn't have combo, comes and ask if it's ok for her to take the shrimp roll off my basket. Thank god I hadn't touched it but that's a strange move for a restaurant. Also I didn't know there's a combo option and whatever's included in a combo. Anyways, overall food is still good. One less star for that customer service. I really wanted to love this place because the food and drinks were genuinely amazing. We ordered the P2 pho with two beef cuts and the R4 grilled chicken broken rice and both were flavorful, fresh, and honestly some of the better Vietnamese food I have had. The mango jasmine tea and lychee jasmine tea were also really good and refreshing. You can tell they have improved the restaurant and the space looks great, but you cannot improve customer service skills. The service completely ruined it for us. There were three guys walking around doing nothing while one girl was clearly the only one actually working. After we sat down, a live streamer sat right next to us and started streaming. It was loud and uncomfortable. We felt like we could not even have a normal conversation and did not like being in the background of someone's video. What made it worse was one of the guys spent more time talking to the streamer than helping actual customers. It felt unprofessional and honestly frustrating. We ended up leaving early because of the atmosphere. It really sucks because the food and drinks were great, but the experience was not. We will not be returning. read more

Been coming here for months and usually service and the pho is great but ever since the remodel the service has gone down and the pho is basically a bowl of straight oil. We showed up at 7:30 to eat dinner and they completely forgot to put our pho order in and brought it out 15 minutes before they close and then they have the audacity to tell us we had to leave in 5 minutes when they literally brought out food out late. Out of all the Vietnamese spots in San Antonio, I do trust SP cafe to hit that craving spot for me. The inside looks exactly like you would expect from a Vietnamese place with the wooden tables/seats. It can get a bit tight during busy hours. I got a banh mi, and it was pretty skimpy for the price. I might just not be used to paying this much for a banh mi and then having it not be stuffed to the brim just made it somewhat disappointing. Also wish there was more components to it. Was craving a Bahn mi today and decided to check out SP. the menu is large with a great variety. Great prices also. They were busy seeing as how it's next to the Massage school .. so once I ordered To Go it did take over 20 minutes to get my order but it was worth it. The Bahn Mi had a good amount of meat, fresh crispy veggies , and perfectly toasted bread. I did the combo with Won Ton soup - great flavor and a perfect warm dish I needed. When we are in SA the in laws were craving more Vietnamese food. We found this gem, and we knew it was solid when we got there and a bunch of families from the Vietnamese church were also here. They have literally every vietnamese dish you can imagine, Pho, bun, bun bo hue, banh mi, bo kho, vietnamese coffee, and you'd think because they did so many different things none of it would be good, but everything was delicious! Such a delicious experience! I've been to SP twice now and both meals I've had were as delicious as you can get. The staff members are so polite and kind, and the place is so cozy and warm. Not to mention their menu is EXTENSIVE. They have so many different coffees, teas, specialty drinks, breakfast dishes, pastries, and so so much more that it was a little overwhelming to choose what I wanted to try. This last visit I ordered the Fried Egg Sandwich (F4) with no cilantro. It was absolutely divine! The bread was fresh and chewy, the mix of tangy and subtly flavored crisp veggies was delicious, and the warm fried egg brought everything together. It was a mild and almost comforting dish but a very filling one nonetheless. My fiancé and I split it and both left feeling very satisfied. We also received an Eggroll side as we ordered the combo. It was so yummy that even my fiancé who typically doesn't like egg rolls really enjoyed it. As the combo only came with one drink we ordered a second one as well, both Iced Matcha Lattes. As a former coffee shop and specialty tea shop barista, I was a little bit disappointed by the Matcha Latte purely because of the sweetness level. I'd ordered mine without sweetener and with almond milk while my fiancé's was also unsweetened but with the standard milk option and both were entirely too sweet. It was some of the sweetest matcha I've ever had to the point where it practically drowned out the matcha taste itself, and left a just as sweet aftertaste in my mouth. That being said, it was smooth, creamy, and crafted excellently. On my visit prior I'd ordered one of their boba teas and it was absolutely delicious and I loved every bit of it, so maybe next time I try their Matcha Latte I'll order it with half the sweetener to see if it makes a difference. Even with this less than perfect beverage experience, I still have faith in their drinks as the boba tea was so good. I am very much looking forward to returning and trying more of their menu. My Dad's wife, who hates me, loves this place after going with me last time and goes even when I'm not visiting. This time I was in SA with a friend who had never eaten Vietnamese food. (I know, crazy and unimaginable) She had the bun noodle with spring roll and lemon grass pork. She was in heaven! Typically a light eater, she dug into this bowl like she was in love. It made me so happy to see her enjoy the crispy rolls, the super tender and well seasoned meat, to mix and munch on the noodle and veg with peanuts and sauce. I had the F1 Vietnamese sandwich with cha lua and wished I had two... it's filling but so delicious you want to keep eating well after you are done. I'm craving one now. We also had a pate chaud. Um no. The first ones I've had were in Falls Church VA at Ba Le and were unbelievably flaky and the filling was divine in texture and meatiness. These were meh. We also tried the Vietnamese version of zongzi. It is a leaf-wrapped pyramid of stuffed rice. This was also less than exciting for me, but maybe because I'm so familiar with a Chinese version. Cool spot! However, it got very busy on a weekend. When I arrived around noon, there were not many people in there, however in the next one hour the venue was bustling with people! We were a party of two and ordered veggie dumplings for an appetizer. My friend got a chicken vermicelli along with an iced matcha latte and I went for vegetable pho paired with a salted caramel latte. I simply loved the food. Clean ingredients and great taste! Very good Vietnamese cafe/bakery/soup restaurant. Lots of parking and quite a bit of seating, both of which are relatively rare for some cafes. Service was fast and friendly, and the food was good, enough for me to come back and try some more of their menu items. They were out of the item I was there for, banh bot chien. (Fried rice cakes, a to-die for dish!) The lady I spoke with didn't speak enough English for me to determine if it was just out for the day, or if they don't serve it anymore. I'll update this review if I find out. The fried pork egg rolls are juuuust short of great, they are packed with all the things I like in Vietnamese egg rolls: glass noodle, carrot, pork, and black mushroom. However, they were warm, not hot so they'd been sitting out for a bit. The banh mi had excellent bread and great flavors. Again, just short of great due to the odd choice of meat. I got the grilled beef banh mi, and it was a sort of ground meat cutlet or Vietnamese meatloaf, not something I'm used to getting. I will be back to try some different items on the menu, and hopefully they have banh bot chien! This place scores a 4 out of 5 on the 'CTJ Scale', as noted below. 5 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Jesus good. Would be OK passing away after finishing a plate here. 4 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Mary good.
