    Aloo Tikki Chat
    Keke K.

This place feels just like a fast food Indian restaurant, both in how it looks and how the food tastes. I ordered masala dosa, rava dosa, regular dosa, aloo tikki chaat, samosa chaat, chicken lollipops, and chole bhature. The only good thing I can tell is the food came out super fast! It was pretty obvious everything was pre-made, probably frozen and just thawed or reheated. Nothing tasted fresh except for the thick dosa shell. Overall, if you're looking for a quick bite and don't expect much, it's fine, but if you want authentic, freshly made good Indian food, this isn't the place.

We visited this place on a Sunday at noon, and there was pretty much no crowd/waiting. The food is decent, and the spice level could have been a bit milder. We had a thali and a few other items. The service was fine.

Disappointed with the Malai Kabab and overall experience." We visited Southern Spice in Irvine, and while most dishes were okay, the Malai Tikka Kabab was a big letdown. It had an odd, chemical-like taste and seemed old - not fresh at all. This was very concerning, especially since we were dining with kids. When we brought this up to the server, they promptly took the dish away and mentioned they would speak to the chef. They did inform us that the dish would not be included in the bill, which we appreciated. However, there was no apology or acknowledgment of the issue, which made the situation feel poorly handled. Serving such a dish in the first place is unacceptable--how can something with such an odd taste even make it to the table? The other dishes--Dosa, Puri Masala, and Chole Bhature--were okay but nothing special. Overall, the experience was disappointing. I hope Southern Spice prioritizes quality control and takes customer feedback seriously moving forward.

Love this place and their lunch menu! Simple yet delicious! Ordered Goat Biryani Combo with Chicken korma. It comes with a Chapathi, Salan and Raita. All of them tasted good! Service was quick as well! Their bathrooms needs to be updated

Update: No complains on their service and food. Loved the malai kofta curry. Flavorful and finger licking good. Decent portion. Highly recommend trying their malai kofta curry either with a garlic naan or rice. Still maintaining the consistency. One of the few restaurants in Irving still serving decent meal. I have been visiting southern spice on & off since 2015. I like their thalis which seem like plate meals (a term used in South Indian mess) Good and decent portions. Never had a bad experience here. Price is fairly reasonable. Recently was craving for parota & curry and went to southern spice as no other place was serving parota. Food was tasty and fresh. I definitely recommend trying their thalis.

I would not recommend this place to ANYONE, because of this employee. She doesn't know how to act, doesn't know the menu, doesn't understand English (She is Latina). And the whole "deep breathing" act she pulled was UNREALISTIC. I won't be back for sure and will be sure to spread the word! The management should consider hiring people who want to work there, know and understand the food.

Chettinad kuzhambu, Hyderabadi goat masala, saag paneer, channa masala

In short, this place had very good flavor but my order could have been a bit spicier. I ordered the channa masala, saag curry, chettinad kuzhambu, and hyderabadi goat masala. You can't go wrong with the channa or the dependable saag paneer, but I felt the chettinad kuzhambu was a tad too salty. But everything still tasted great and I enjoyed eating it for the next couple of meals. I also love how their menu has such a variety from tiffins to thalis and a selection of really cool "street food" items that you don't see very often from Indian restaurants on Uber Eats.

Lunch thali is back!!! Inam glad to find out that they brought it back since it was the main reason I started coming here for lunch, but the lunch thali is not the same. Less options less food and the service can get better.

The one thing I'd say that separates this place from the multitude of Indian restaurants available in the area is that they have quite a lot of thali options to choose from, whether it's from the North or South of India. I decided to try one of their thali versions, optioning for a vegetarian one opting for a Bhendakaya Jeedi Pappu Vepudu, which is an okra dish (not a gravy, but sauteed with onions, tomatoes and spices) cooked really well (not slimy or undercooked) and done with cashews. Normally I'm not a fan of using nuts in an Indian entree dish with vegetables or meat, but this time it really works. The crunchy cashews gave a nice contrast in texture with the more softer okra. It being a thali, which necessitates other tid bits coming with it, included white rice, a rasam (savory soup), some kind of korma and a kesari (Indian dessert made of semolina, lots of ghee and sugar). Really good overall. I also tried their Hyderabadi dum biryani with chicken, which was alright, nothing to write home about. The rice was flavorful and cooked well. I just wish the chicken was a little more moist and could be more flavorful (It was bordering on anemic/bland). I also dinged them one star because my delivery was lacking the Vankaya Podi chips I ordered :(

They no longer serve thali due to covid. I also see new faces since I haven't been back since 2019, before the pandemic. New people are much nicer than the old employees. Menu is smaller and I do recommend their dosa. It is huge!!! If you're not familiar, a dosa is like a crunchy crepe. Break off a piece and dip it then enjoy!

Are there any Covid safety measure other than wearing masks?

Does this restaurant use Southern or Northern Indian flavorings and spices? I prefer my food sweet, that's why I'm asking.

It is primarily a South Indian restaurant, however, they also serve North Indian food. On the creamy, sweet curries they can customize the spice level. Just opt for North Indian style food and request mild.

Our server was attentive and explained the menu was more "Modern Indian" food versus "Traditional Indian" food. We followed our server's lead and ordered the Bharwan Paneer Tikka along with traditional Somosas for appetizers. The Samosas were tasty but were a bit on the tiny side. The Bharwan Paneer Tikka was the standout dish of the evening. For our main dishes, we ordered the Dal Tadka, Bhindi Do Pyaza, and New Delhi Butter Chicken. We ordered some additional Garlic Naan and White Rice to accompany the main dishes. All the dishes were pretty standard without being too spicy. You might be a little disappointed if you like your Indian Food on the spicier level. We finished off with Rasmali and Kulfi Falooda. The Rasmali was the highlight of dessert. The flavors of pistachio and the accompanying sauce was a great combination. Overall, Sanjh is a fancy Indian Restaurant. I would return for a special event given the upscale atmosphere. You also have to open to interpretations of traditional Indian Cuisine.
