Southern Spice is a solid 4 star Indian restaurant in Las Colinas, which is full of similar options, due primarily to great value. I haven't had vada pav sliders before but the filling is kind of like fried samosa filling without the dough. It's good. The serving size of the biryani was very impressive. You can see from the photo that they fill the container and then add another mound of rice on top of that - basically 2 servings (we took one home). And they didn't skimp on the chicken either! The chicken is cooked perfectly, the sauces are a great complement and this is an excellent dish. The Lunch Thali gives you a lot of bang for your buck and mine included ~5 pieces of fish fry, about the same amount of veg pakora, yogurt dip, chicken curry with rice, 2 different soups, a naan/tortilla thing, and a carrot dessert (like a halwa). All had good flavor and the soups have a nice spicy kick to them. However, since all the dishes for the thali come off the lunch line (ie all premade), the tortilla, fish and pakoras had been sitting out for awhile and not too hot. Had they come out fresh from the fryer, I might have given this experience 5 stars. As it stands, I'll probably be back for lunch anyways - and the thali is available 7 days a week! read more

Very nice decor and clean restaurant! The menu is quite interesting! We came on a Thursday night around 930PM and it was empty. We thought it was because they were maybe closing soon! This place feels just like a fast food Indian restaurant, both in how it looks and how the food tastes. I ordered masala dosa, rava dosa, regular dosa, aloo tikki chaat, samosa chaat, chicken lollipops, and chole bhature. The only good thing I can tell is the food came out super fast! It was pretty obvious everything was pre-made, probably frozen and just thawed or reheated. Nothing tasted fresh except for the thick dosa shell. I've been a longtime customer of Southern Spice and usually order the Hyderabad Dum Biryani, but my recent experience was absolutely terrible. I placed an order through Uber Eats (which apparently uses the restaurant's own drivers), and it turned into a nightmare. The food never arrived within the promised timeframe. I called Southern Spice countless times, left messages, and never once received a call back. Nearly three hours later, a driver finally showed up--completely clueless about my order. He didn't even bring what I had ordered, including the biryani and samosas. Instead, he just handed me some random food with no explanation. The lack of professionalism and courtesy from both the restaurant and their delivery driver was shocking. After years of being a loyal customer, this experience was enough for me to say I will never recommend Southern Spice again. Truly disappointing. read more

Disappointed with the Malai Kabab and overall experience." We visited Southern Spice in Irvine, and while most dishes were okay, the Malai Tikka Kabab was a big letdown. It had an odd, chemical-like taste and seemed old - not fresh at all. This was very concerning, especially since we were dining with kids. When we brought this up to the server, they promptly took the dish away and mentioned they would speak to the chef. They did inform us that the dish would not be included in the bill, which we appreciated. However, there was no apology or acknowledgment of the issue, which made the situation feel poorly handled. Serving such a dish in the first place is unacceptable--how can something with such an odd taste even make it to the table? The other dishes--Dosa, Puri Masala, and Chole Bhature--were okay but nothing special. Overall, the experience was disappointing. Update: No complains on their service and food. Loved the malai kofta curry. Flavorful and finger licking good. Decent portion. Highly recommend trying their malai kofta curry either with a garlic naan or rice. Still maintaining the consistency. One of the few restaurants in Irving still serving decent meal. Very unreliable restaurant. They advertise a Thursday special and we went for that. Asked about it and were told it was available and we even paid for it and waited for it to arrive. After a while the front desk person came back and said that the dosa special was not available. We are still waiting for the refund to show up. Of course we left and had a nice dinner nearby. In short, this place had very good flavor but my order could have been a bit spicier. I ordered the channa masala, saag curry, chettinad kuzhambu, and hyderabadi goat masala. You can't go wrong with the channa or the dependable saag paneer, but I felt the chettinad kuzhambu was a tad too salty. The one thing I'd say that separates this place from the multitude of Indian restaurants available in the area is that they have quite a lot of thali options to choose from, whether it's from the North or South of India. I decided to try one of their thali versions, optioning for a vegetarian one opting for a Bhendakaya Jeedi Pappu Vepudu, which is an okra dish (not a gravy, but sauteed with onions, tomatoes and spices) cooked really well (not slimy or undercooked) and done with cashews. Normally I'm not a fan of using nuts in an Indian entree dish with vegetables or meat, but this time it really works. The crunchy cashews gave a nice contrast in texture with the more softer okra. It being a thali, which necessitates other tid bits coming with it, included white rice, a rasam (savory soup), some kind of korma and a kesari (Indian dessert made of semolina, lots of ghee and sugar). Really good overall. I also tried their Hyderabadi dum biryani with chicken, which was alright, nothing to write home about. The rice was flavorful and cooked well. I just wish the chicken was a little more moist and could be more flavorful (It was bordering on anemic/bland). 4 stars it is after having dined in thrice and being served consistently good food. The menu is huge consisting of various snacks, biryanis and various thali options. The regular lunch thali would be the quickest thing to order, because all the components are cooked and kept ready. A few of them can be very very spicy and there's no way to customize, as they are all precooked. Though spicy, the flavors have always been good every time we dined in. It is a huge thali with 6 sides to go with rice and chapathi. You are also served a bajji(pakora), papad, yogurt and a dessert. They make this dessert that has a sweet lentil filling, battered and deep fried, yummy! They also have South Indian and North Indian thalis where your choice of entree is made to order so it takes longer to come out. Along with the entree they serve a few side dishes, rice and dessert from the precooked line of food. A word of caution, the gravy in butter masala, malai kofta and tikka masala though good, taste the same. The butter masala has a ton of food coloring added which is the only difference. The interior is designed like a fast casual restaurant. The tables and floor have been clean on every visit. The service otherwise is okay, nothing to write home about. read more

Food (4/5) - I tried their Chhole Bhature. It was served in normal steel plate along with pickle onions. The bhatures were huge and really worth the price. It did not taste as authentic as Punjabi Chhole Bhature but still tasted good and the spicy level was mild. Ambience (4/5) - I loved the rustic ambience of the place. The lighting was dim lit. My husband is constantly craving Indian food, and we stumbled upon southern spice via Google when we first moved to the Las Colinas area about a year ago. It is now our go to every time we get the hankering for Indian food but don't want to spend 2 hours slaving away in the kitchen. We usually order takeout hence the lack of pictures (takeout just doesn't look as aesthetic!!!). The food always comes out delicious and piping hot. However, their garlic naan is a hit or a miss, there have been times where our order has been rock hard but others where the naan has come out soft and fluffy. Additionally, their portion sizes have gotten smaller since we started coming about a year ago (according to my husband). However, this hs overall an amazing place for authentic Indian food! read more
