Tried out southern nationals Easter pre fixed brunch. Really great options and flavors. Portions were generous and everything was extremely flavorful. I started with the arugula and asparagus salad and for my entree, I had the braised short ribs and eggs. For desert I had the bourbon buttermilk pound cake. Lee was our server and was EXCELLENT!! Sensational scene in Summerhill! It was refreshing to seamlessly pull into a dedicated lot with free parking for customers. A quick hop, skip, and jump across the street and you're at the entrance. We were warmly greeted and immediately seated for our 6 PM reservation. Josh delivered A-1 customer service from start to finish. Our group of five kicked off the evening with a variety of appetizers--the little gem salad and the maple roasted golden beets & carrots were standouts. I also enjoyed the breadbasket selections. The lamb burger helper was divine--and somehow even better reheated the next day. The vibe at the bar was lively and inviting. This was the perfect restaurant for our business dinner. Finished a project and wanted something more elevated to eat . Slipped into Southern National on a chilly Tuesday night. Started off with Maple Roasted Golden Beets and Carrots. It was quite tasty but I'd leave off the pomegranate since I don't like that crunch with the smooth hummus We also added the bread tray ( not used to paying for bread but they were unique enough to warrant it this time) . Plus the sheet pan biscuits were delicious the next day! Our main plates were also superb - mushroom tortellini and spiced braised short ribs The short ribs flavor was like nothing we've had before . New Orleans meets Asian cuisine . I was stuffed but had to try the dessert chocolate pecan torte topped with an ice cream scoop and it was epically rich and the remainder came home with me. I really wanna start this review off talking about the service. I really like the service here. I've been here twice since June and it's been consistent. The servers are attentive and warm. You're not waiting a long time to have someone come over to greet you. And they're very detailed when describing items on the menu. Just so helpful and attentive. Those things are very important to me. Okay now that I've got that covered, let's talk about some other things. So the restaurant is located in the summerhill area which is close to the old turner field. Very walkable area. And they also have their own parking lot, which is a block away from the restaurant. It's also black owned too so the cuisine they serve is American southern food. They used to be in Mobile, AL but they relocated here to Atlanta two years ago. On both visits, I ordered the espresso martini and I have to say, it's very flavorful. And smooth. The bread appetizer is plentiful. And if they're serving the ribs, note that the ribs are VERY tender. They're smoked and falls straight off the bone. For entrees, I've had the chicken thighs with corn and potatoes and the chicken pasta. I really think the food just needs a little more seasoning. It's just not hitting like I want it to. Idk if they're holding back to tailor to the summerhill area crowd but I really need them to give more to the dishes when it comes to the seasoning. And even the pound cake was a 3. So yeah, I'd be open to trying their brunch. The host said their short rib hash is the most popular dish so I'd want to come back for that. But yeah, a nice little date night spot or a place to bring family. read more

Had a really nice time here. Ambiance is nice, easy Resy reservation. Started with the bread service which was amazing. Pepper jelly is a smash. Little salad small plate was also tasty but could've gone without it. Okra and broccolini small plate was very tasty. The fried chicken thighs has a hint of coconut curry which was very good and the chicken was cooked beautifully. The dessert deconstructed chocolate cake was a miss. This 3 star review is really based on 4/5 food and 1/5 service misses. We were very surprised to be able to book a table just the day before and to find the restaurant half empty on a Saturday evening. This place was very popular when it first opened, but it's difficult to want to return to poor service. The dishes were generally all tasty, and our group enjoyed the fried oysters and fried chicken especially - both gluten free, no less! The ribs were okay as were the mussels and the pork tenderloin. The most impressive item was probably the buffalo Brussel sprouts - great flavor and innovative vegetable dish! However, this was really all quite soured by poor service and a number of misses. Servers were lost - we had two occasions where they brought dishes that were not ours to the table, so someone else was not getting their food. Drinks and the first small plates arrived quickly, but then there was a huge lull before mains were served - maybe they were accidentally served to another group. This is a more upscale restaurant, and part of that dining experience is typically the server makes recommendations to suit the group - for example, we ordered the ribs, which are not a sharing food per piece. There were 4 of us, and we were served 3 ribs. One would reasonably expect the server to ask if we want to add a 4th rib while taking the order. Two friends asked about the vegetable sides, and the server recommended potatoes - and did not tell them that both of their entrees are served on beds of potatoes. Everyone loves a good potato dish, but obviously they would have preferred to try a different variety of dish if given the information. Furthermore, they seemed to have a very poor understanding of allergies - mentioning that "there's very little of it" about allergen containing ingredients as well as "it's okay because it's just sitting on top" - this could be a real health emergency and liability for the restaurant. In the end, they dropped the bill off without a word - we paid and left. The ambiance was nice. The bar looks very cool and modern. Parking is relatively easy in Summerhill, and they have a dedicated lot at the end of the block. I hope they work out the service components bc they really are a disservice to what the chef is doing with flavors and ingredients to showcase upscale southern dishes. However, whether people will return to find out is another question. read more

This restaurant has a nice ambience. Dimly lit and chic-sophisticated, but not too full of itself that you need to dress fancy to dine here. Nice music in the background - Lofi/soul/hip hop at a good volume. You can Bob your head to it and still hear your date talking. For an appetizer we had the mussels and collard greens, which sounds like it could be odd, but it was maybe the tastiest thing I've eaten so far this year!!! I would choose that and an order of bread as my meal and be satisfied if I wasn't super hungry! The server was friendly, helpful and enthusiastic! I ordered the red fish which was tasty but not as good as those greens lol. My friend and I had an early weekday dinner here recently. The restaurant is like a jewel box - plain on the outside, but upscale and lovely inside. It's got a lively atmosphere and service was quite good too. We had the bread service - which is pricey- but so good. I'm the kind of person that would choose bread over cake, so I was very happy that my friend also wanted to order it. We then shared the pork loin and shishito appetizer which was tasty. For my entree, I got the fried chicken thighs over a jalapeno maque choux (fancy corn stew). Everything was delicious and perfectly prepared. For dessert, I had the key lime tart. There was a little bit of sticker shock when we got the bill but I think it is on par with other fancy restaurants in Atlanta. Definitely go for date night or a special occasion. The interior of the restaurant is beautiful. The ambience was very inviting. The lager I had was cold and crisp, and... that's about it. I ordered the pecan smoked baby back ribs. To go with them I had buffalo brussels sprouts. In both cases, the pickled embellishments overpowered the main selections. The ribs lacked any notable flavor. The bleu cheese crumbles, pickled shallots and celery dominated the sprouts. There were just a lot of aggressively sour and bitter notes. I ate because I was hungry, not because I enjoyed it. Southern National had been on our radar for a while, and we're glad we finally made a reservation. I love that the menu is seasonal and changes often! We started with the Brussels sprouts as an appetizer, which were packed with flavor and set a high bar for the main courses. I ordered the cauliflower plate, and my husband had the deconstructed hamburger. The cauliflower was beautifully plated, with a presentation as lovely as its flavor. The "hamburger," however, was more of an upscale hamburger helper pasta, which my husband enjoyed, though he'd likely choose something different next time. Service was good, though nothing exceptional. In hindsight, it would have been helpful to know that the "hamburger" was actually a pasta dish. We initially thought we'd been served the wrong order, as we expected a traditional hamburger. The ambiance was also a pleasant surprise. What an amazing dinner and brunch experience in the Summerhill area of Atlanta! Southern National was a must-visit on my weekend trip to ATL. And as expected, the food and cocktails are award worthy and the service is fantastic. I also loved the music and ambiance. I literally ate DOWNNN and everything I tasted was remarkable and impeccably plated to boot. Faves: Mussels Brussels Duck (brunch) Prado (cocktail) Full disclosure: I've been a huge fan since I found the Southern National brand in Mobile, AL and while I could be biased, there's absolutely no need. Southern National is a well-oiled machine. I'm pleased to report that they've gone from great to greater. I'm so pleased to see that everything from the space and decor to the menu has evolved to even higher heights since the move, and the aesthetic and vibe fits Atlanta perfectly. Bravo! Came here for dinner during a recent work trip after reading a ton of rave reviews. Initially, we were a little nervous about coming here since there were notes on a dress code on the restaurant's site, and we were all dressed pretty casually, but the hostess didn't even give us the once over when we arrived, just seated us without question. The ambiance is giving high-end but approachable. It's the kind of place that folds your napkin back up for you when you leave the table, but the prices here are more accessible and the atmosphere isn't stuffy. We started out with a round of drinks. I went with the Prado which was tequila based with egg whites and maraschino cherries, which felt like a grown up Shirley Temple and tasted just as good. We shared the loaded sweet potato topped with lamb and curry yogurt sauce, the harissa roasted carrots and the bread, which is worth spending money on. Freshly baked and delicious. Portions here are small, but you'll want to come with a few people to be able to try everything here. I went with the seared cobia for my main and loved it. All the flavors worked well together and the fish was super fresh. Highly recommend coming here. Delicious food, really inventive menu. read more

This is my first time at Southern National for dinner. Since brunch is phenomenal, I correctly assumed that dinner would also be amazing. Couldn't be more true! From the service to ambiance, I'd say that everything was curated to be a special experience. Though I don't eat pork or beef, the menu had a variety of proteins/veggies to make my palate happy. The table sampled the maple roasted golden beets & carrots, lamb burger helper, the Berber spice fried chicken thighs, and the mojo potatoes. Everything was delish. Since Atlanta parking can be insane, it's good to note the restaurant has parking behind the restaurant, A-lot (corner of Georgia & Fraser) and street parking. I can't wait to return! I visited for a private event and experienced a tasting menu of about eight items. It was flooring. Each dish was incredibly multilayered, gorgeous and perfectly balanced. The layout was spacious and comfortable and the light in was . All of the (large) artworks are by some of our most revered, museum collected artists in Atlanta. I was shocked to come here on a Friday night and for this place not to be jam packed. It was pretty easy to get a table. Everything from top to bottom was excellent. We had the Charcuterie board and I personally had the pulled duck sandwich. Don't think the Charcuterie board was a good value, but the pimento cheese on the board was awesome. The pulled duck sandwich was phenomenal. The duck was so tender and the preserved cherries were wonderful. I was in the mood for a whiskey sour and asked if they could make one for me. Not only did they do it, but it was one of the best whiskey sours I have ever had. Whiskey sours aren't easy to make and boy does their bar tender know what they are doing. Perfectly parted with a foamy top and they added some bitters on top. Not only was it less than the cocktails on the menu, but I tell you it was better than any cocktail on the menu. After people saw my drink, everyone else's next drink was a whiskey sour. Bottom line a great place for a date or with friends. Just overall solid restaurant. Will definitely come back. read more

We made reservations for Sunday brunch and we were pleasantly surprised. First, shout out to our server Charles, his service, and menu knowledge is definitely appreciated!!! Everything we had questions able answered and he's a foodie so he's tried several items in the menu. We started with the gulf Seafood croquettes and the biscuit service. I forgot to take a picture but they both were PHENOMENAL!!! Next, the NY strip and eggs and the duck confit hash, which I was on the fence about, but Charles' description of the meal made me order it and it did not disappoint!!! The had my favorite bottled spring water which made me happy :) The restaurant is located in Summerhill, along a street of shop and restaurants. Located near downtown. It is part of the wonderful community redevelopment at the former Atlanta Braves stadium. Located on a street with numerous new and exciting restaurants and shops, this has the making of a wonderful artsy segment of Atlanta. Free, safe parking in the rear and on the streets. We decided on Saturday brunch. Just before lunch time, it had a nice vibe with smooth jazz music. The charming and professional maitre'd is Tiffany. Our friendly and efficient server was Savannah. The bartender, Jacinta, was so skilled and cool, I went over to commend her for being an artist crafting first class cocktails. Berry-Basil Bramble and the Hemmingway daiquiri (grapefruit) were refined and delicious. I enjoyed the Fried Chicken Biscuit with Parmesan Grits, two exquisite dishes. The flavorful and tender biscuit with the wonderfully marinated fried chicken is what one expects from a class leader. We also enjoyed their Hangover Bowl, and a side order of SoNat beignets. The only shortcoming is their thin coffee menu. They do have a wonderfully strong drip coffee, but no espresso machine. I hope this will be corrected in the future. Great food spots in Rome, Paris, and everywhere in the world have espresso drinks! As a sidenote, across the street, you will find an amazing pastry shop (Little Tart where we purchased an extraordinary wheat chocolate chip cookie and a pecan fig tart, and next to that a gourmet ice cream shop (where the long line suggests a must visit next time). In Atlanta visiting fam and was perusing the Atlanta magazine and saw Southern National highlighted. Parents said they've seen it elsewhere and have been wanting to try it so we decided to go on my last night which was a Sunday around 7:30pm. We didn't have reservations and the place was less than half full. The space is really nice. A swanky bar and a variety of seating options in the dining room. The kitchen is semi-open and it's cool to see them working in the back. We were seated quickly and greeted by our server. The drink menu wasn't too exciting for me. My dad ordered the Punch Royal which was ok. I was looking for something light, sweet and citrusy and the server recommended Armagnac Old Fashioned. I knew better but trusted the server. It came and there were no sweet notes to savor and it was quite bold and strong going down. I opted for a glass of Riesling instead. The highlights- my mom loved the bok choy. She cleaned her plate and didn't offer us any! A few red flags. 1. Hostess was sneezing multiple times and did not wash hands. Went back to folding napkins and handling menus...yuck! We had already ordered food or we probably would have bounced on that alone. 2. My dad loves all types of peas and was hype to see field peas on the menu. He wanted the trout but the field peas came with the redfish and substitutions were not allowed. He settled for the redfish and when the dish came out, the field peas were clearly black eyed peas and they were salty. We pointed it out to the server and he went back and forth with us about how those were truly field peas. They looked exactly like the black eyed peas in the bok choy. 3. I was ready for a pork chop after seeing the pics posted on the website and on other reviews. Folks were raving about this pork chop and I knew that was what I was ordering when we decided to go here. I was served what appeared to be sliced boneless pork loin and that sucka was a bit dry. Server said this was a center cut pork chop that was sliced and it's the same thing as the pork chop they serve. Ummm...ok. Double check what they are serving before you order. 4. The manager/lead was made aware of our concerns (I watched the server bring him into the back area after talking with us) and he did not come over and check on us or provide additional information/explanation for the bait and switch for the "field peas" and "pork chop". It's great practice to come check on folks in general but you should definitely come around when there is an issue. And if there are substitutions on the menu, just make it clear before ordering. read more

The food was subpar!! The service was awful. It took over 45 minutes to get our food!!! We asked for the manager, when he came to the table, his attitude was matter of fact!!! He immediately stated the we know it's taking to long to get your food to you. We immediately asked for him to come back to the table and share our disappointment. The manager came back and offered and covered our meal and provided us two gift cards. That's called service recover. I will give them another chance based on that. read more

Unfortunately for us tonight the service tanked the experience soup to nuts. Every drink, app, and entree took ages to arrive. Wonderful experience and I wish I'd visited here sooner. I honestly have been in this area in about 7 years or so and don't know all of this was over here in "Summerhill". The restaurant has had limited free parking behind it and I believe there's a parking lot across the street. We had a reservation for 7 for work colleagues. The hostess was nice to walk us to the bar while we waited for some more people from our party. The bartender was super knowledgeable about the drinks and the drinks were fantastic! Our server explained the menu nicely and was attentive throughout the night. You can tell the dishes came out with care and can see the owner/executive chef making sure the plates are good to go before they come to the table. We had all of the small plates except the beets. My favorites were the fried oysters and bread basket. For the main, I had the bebere (Ethiopian spice) spiced fried chicken with corn succotash. It was a great portion for the price and I enjoyed the chicken. It could've used a touch more salt though. The corn and pepper succotash was my favorite part of the dish. Hubby had the coffee rubbed pork chop. He practically licked up the sauce, enough said. I can't wait to return here. Next time I'll save room for dessert. read more
