Very bad first impression! Wife and I went in hoping for dinner at a very nice new spot and were greeted very awkwardly! We decided maybe just a drink at the bar, we ordered two drinks, very flat, no carbonation in the drinks at all, wife's soda had not one bubble in it, my beer had no foam or bubbles at all (extremely flat). Not to mention the stemware was very poor, glasses were very small, very basic, and did not make for a want to be "chic" bar vibe. When paying, placed card down and asked for change for tip- (worked in food industry in the past, always better to tip cash). Bar tender looked at it, and decided to make 4 other drinks first as my wife and I sat there with empty glasses waiting to leave. For a bill under 14 and change, asked for change for a 10, was going to tip $4 and given back two fives, granted it's only $1 but the service and everything did not grant a 29% tip sorry! Last night we had a fabulous dinner at South Bay in Fairfield, CT during restaurant week. We reserved an early table, as we were traveling from an hour away in NY. We were promptly seated at the table of our choice, only 1 other table was occupied at that point. The rooms are nicely appointed, with enough room between tables for a pleasant meal. Our waiter, Stephen, was extremely friendly and helpful throughout our meal. He made great recommendations, and was ready to assist at all times. The food was delicious all around, each of our different dishes was very good. The portions were a good size and very pleasantly plated. This was our second time there, the first time we ate outside during the fall, both times leaving us wanting to return. read more

The ambiance in the restaurant was nice. They also had very good menu choices. My son was skeptical that the food would be great because they are apparently more known as a bar. Unfortunately for the price, I think he was right. They crispy artichokes were very good. The crispy calamari was ok. Two people had the bolognese which they both agreed was ok but nothing special. One person had the mushroom truffle pasta and the flavors were good. The final person had steak and fries, which were well cooked. The food all came out quickly but none of the food was that hot. It almost felt like it sat under a heat lamp for awhile. Our waiter was very nice but he appeared to be the only head waiter and then there were a bunch of runners. At times it created for a wait in service or confusion when we needed something. Over all it was ok, but for the price I think they need to do better. read more

Love this spot! The restaurant has an outdoor dining area as well as a pretty bar/dining area with two floors of dining space. The restaurant is nicely decorated with great views. For dinner we started with half a dozen oysters which were a great start. For my entree I had the hangar steak served with spinach. What a meal! The steak was perfectly cooked at the temperature I wanted. It was packed with flavor and oh so tender. My girlfriend had the roasted chicken scarpiello (sp.?) served with mashed potatoes and spinach. She loved it, the portion was huge. This place needs to do a better job on their takeout orders. When the kitchen staff is on point the food is quite good. Unfortunately we order the grilled octopus the way it used to come (with humus instead of aioli) and for whatever reason, they read the ticket such that they remove the aioli but they routinely don't add the humus. Its getting tiring that I have to check the order in its entirety for basically one substitution. read more

The general ambiance is clean and modern. Service was fair; the waiter gave us a bill that was about $80 higher than it should have been. We asked that the bill be split between two credit cards; one card had the full amount of the bill and the other had food that we had not ordered on it. We asked to speak to the manager, who said "mistakes happen." He never apologized, never offered a complimentary drink or dessert. Walked away after we finally received a corrected bill. We had a fabulous dinner tonight at South Bay. It was my birthday and we figured we would try something new. The place is pretty large and setup on three levels. We got there early and had the choice of almost any table. We picked the middle level by the window and the place really got crowded by the time we left. It has very tall ceilings on that level but yet it wasn't a very loud place. I did manage to take pictures of every dish. It was dinner for two but there were so many good things on the menu we wanted to try so we got an extra plate to share and ensure we had left overs. We shared the beet salad to start. It was fresh and really tasty. We also had the shrimp and tater tot app and I wasn't sure what it would be like but it was great with big meaty shrimp. Then came 3 main course dinners. The wood fired pork chop was fantastic, the shrimp, andouille sausage and okra gumbo was really good but if you like it hot ask for some hot sauce. The mushroom truffle fettuccine was a nice compliment and made a nice left over. Dessert was great. We had the Crème brûlée - not that we had any room for it. If you're looking for outdoor seating and high-end food, then South Bay is the restaurant for you. It was a rainy Wednesday when we went, so we had to settle for an indoor table next to the window. We ordered the Halibut and the Soft Shell Crabs (the specials), and also the Mussels and the Artichoke Hearts (the "small plates"). It was great to get soft shell crabs that WEREN'T breaded & deep-fried! We were basically satisfied with our order, although the halibut was slightly lacking in flavor. The bread they brought out before the meal was 5 small slices of what seemed to be supermarket french bread that someone picked up yesterday. Not a deal breaker, but it was a little off-putting & didn't really fit with the caliber of the rest of the meal. There was an extensive dessert menu which made us happy, as we are dessert fiends! The Crème Brûlée was top-notch and the Tiramisu was light & not too sweet. I read the other Yelp reviews about rude staff, etc, and I can honestly say we didn't encounter any such problems. Maybe it's because we went on a Wednesday when it wasn't terribly busy, but the staff was cordial, almost timid in their interactions with us. I came here for my friends birthday, this is one of her favorite restaurants, I personally wouldn't go if it wasn't for her. There was a lot of waiting for our food but especially mine and I thought it could be a mistake but I told myself I should wait 5 more minutes before bringing it up. Then 10 minutes go by and no one came over. When I was finally able to get someone they go our bad and then I had to wait even longer and the rest of my friends were almost done with their meal at this point. I only really got a side dish of fries so I'm not really sure why I was forgotten about. Then ofc we all got dessert for my friend to celebrate, I went with the crème brûlée classic for being vanilla and smooth and creamy with a nice sugar crust. I was surely mistaken it was filled with a pack full lemon flavor which was not listed on the menu in the details and crème brûlée classically doesn't have lemon in it. I also brought up that I wasn't a fan of the wine I got and I understand there complexity with wine if I made a mistake but I got such a negative response about it. No waiter should make someone feel crazy for not enjoying a wine they typically order and include a lecture. Would not recommend. read more

Met up with friends for a weeknight dinner at South Bay and we were impressed by the rustic feel and stunning wine decor during our dining experience. Wait staff was very cordial. The red sangria was delicious and generously poured. There were a wide variety of Mediterranean inspired menu offerings to choose from. We went there last Saturday for an early Mother's day dinner. We arrived on time with reservations before 5pm. We had a party of 6. The restaurant was not busy except for a few people in the bar area. The back room was empty except for one couple. The host wanted us to sit in the back. There was an empty table in the bar area to accommodate 6 people. I asked if the table was reserved and the host said no. I asked if we can sit there since the day was so nice out to enjoy the view and air. He said he couldn't give us the table. My husband politely asked why not if it is not reserved and he said because today we are expecting over 200 people (from local graduations) and they want to leave it open. I don't typically go against the rules but that did not make sense to me. We were present! I was trying to figure out if maybe they wanted people with balloons or caps and gowns. I'm not sure what the criteria was. The waitress asked the host in a whisper and he shrugged his shoulders, stepped away for about few minutes and then came back and let us sit there. From that moment on, it became very uncomfortable for me because what appeared to be the manager and a few other employees were at the bottom of the stairs looking our way and appeared to be talking about us. At no time were we rude or out of line. I wanted it to be great dinner. Throughout the dinner, the "manager" gave us what felt like looks or just staring at my husband and I as he walked past us and even stared at us from the front door. It was very odd! My husband and I never mentioned it to each other so as not to bring attention to it with the rest of the group. My husband said he wanted to go ask him what was the problem. We have total respect for people in the service industry as we are also in the business to provide service. Unfortunately, I found them to be very unprofessional. We have had family parties, a bridal shower, my husband's office parties and dinner dates there. We have supported them since they first opened. Food is always good, actually I never had complaints about the food or previous service. The waitress was great. That evening, however, the manager made us very uncomfortable and really ruined my Mother's Day celebration, thankfully only ruined it for me because I didn't let the other guests know what was going on. Called on a Friday night, Christmas weekend to see if they had space for my party of 4 and they said yes! This was a nice surprise as we were looking to eat at colony and did a 180 in our plans. Manager was great and attentive as was staff. The manager answered when i called and said she had space and to come by. When arrived she asked if i was the one who called and personally sat us at the table. When our glasses were empty, she also came over and personally refilled them. Luis, our server was also great! The food was amazing. I had the mushroom fettuccini and ate it so quickly. Others at the table ordered steak, rigatoni with blackened chicken and the fish tacos and also loved their meals. We had a birthday and they had a huge sparkler and sang with us. The hospitality was great. Only downside is the seats by the windows get cold especially later at night. We took a random trip to CT , coming off the train we were hungry & decide to give these guys a try. Once seated we started with some drinks I had Pinot & also tried the Strawberry Mojito , good wine , very good mojito. They start u off with some delicious bread & like a ricotta spread w olive oil it was so good , nice soft , warm bread .. lordd so good! Appetizers we had the Buffalo Mozzarella , wow melts in your mouth very good with the tomatoes & bread covered in olive oil. we also tried the Arancini , they were mushroom & spinach , also wow very tasty. It's a decent spot with a great location they are across the street from the Fairfield metro north train station. Pro tip: there is a parking lot across the street for a few of the restaurants and businesses in the immediate area including this one. Pretty good space inside. Bar wraps around to back near the bathroom stairs. Cool strobe lighting throughout. The drinks aren't super expensive. Also be aware it seems do to COVID you can't sit inside, except at the bar. The tables are pushed against the wall. There is outside seating available which is nice. Dj was decent, he played a couple of oldie hits which I did like. 80s, a little 90s and current. My biggest complaint it was only one, and some times two bartenders. So it literally took 15-20 minutes to get a drink at the bar Friday night. Might go back if I'm in the area, it isn't horrible. This was a dinner for 4 on a Friday night. We had made reservations as it was busy. We started the meal by selecting a nice bottle of Malbec. After the bottle presentation our server poured a tasting sample but spilled it down the rim of the glass to form puddle on the table cloth. The Brussel sprout salad was impressive and tasted great. The entrees of salmon, filet, seafood medley, and pasta looked nice. However, after a long wait my daughter's pasta was finally delivered to the table. It was too long of a wait and really brought down the enjoyment of the meal. The seafood medley had exactly 4 shrimp, 4 clams, and 4 mussels, it was just enough and no more. For something different we tried the cheese board, very good but only about 3 cubes of each. Barely mediocre food and completely rushed service. 7:30 reservation Friday last week. Waiter came to take our order and I said we would order a round of small plates before we decided on entrees. "No, you have to place the whole order at one time, can't do that." Had to flag waiter down to eventually place order. Within three minutes, maybe less, the small plates arrived at our table. Nothing special. Tuna tartare had plenty of chips, not much tuna and I didn't see any guacamole. Shrimp and grits was a bit of a joke, unseasoned shrimp sticking out of lukewarm grits and no sauce. Grilled octopus wasn't too bad, but the crispy artichoke still had a lot of the choke attached. Halfway through our appetizers the food runner is standing next to our table with three entrees. I have no idea where he expected to put them down because we were still eating our appetizers. Girl comes over and starts clearing the plates that we were still eating from! We were trying to grab food off the plates as she was taking them. I thought we were on hidden camera. Before we finished our entrees, they cleared out all the tables from the restaurant except for ours. After we were done eating, waiter stopped by and asked how our dinner was. Don't they usually do that a minute or two after you get your food?? Felt very rushed, uncomfortable, cold and out of place as though they didn't want us there. Felt like we were bothering them. Won't return, sorry. Only have one chance to make a first impression, and this first impression was pretty terrible. Place is destined for failure. read more

Friday 01/19/2024 approximately 1800 hours Group of 7. Restaurant was entirely empty. We ordered drinks that took just about 15 minutes to arrive at the table. Appetizers were anything but satisfying. The dinners were nothing special either and were just plain lame. However, the food took way quicker to get to the table than our drinks did... After we would finish eating, the staff would immediately get our plates...even though some people were still eating. Thats just plain rude. The PARMESAN fries...were basically heated up in a microwave and had kraft parmesan sprinkled on top... There is no stall in the mens bathroom...just urinals. So if you need #2 good-luck. The caesar salad was $11, but if you wanted to add steak...$22. Make it make sense. The final bill came out to over $450. All we ordered were some apps, two rounds of drinks, and maybe 3 meals. Way too over priced and unsatisfactory to be paying close to $500 for 7 people. This restaurant tries to portray itself as being high class and boujee. But it is not even close to that. We were a group of 8 with reservations before a show at the nearby FTC Warehouse. The restaurant is really close to the Fairfield train stop and has indoor and outdoor seating options. We ordered a bunch of apps - tuna tartare, fried calamari, 55 mini meatballs, crispy artichokes and the shaved brussels sprouts salad. The appetizers were good but the shaved brussels sprouts salad was GREAT. The parmesan risotto cake that the sprouts sat on was delicious. It was a great combination of hot and cold, crispy, soft and that truffle vinaigrette was delicious. After gorging myself on all of the appetizers (we ordered two of everything, so that was a lot of food for 8 people), I ordered the Wood Fire Burger and a side of broccoli rabe. The burger was very good. The fries were delicious and the broccoli rabe was fine. The food was great. The rest of the experience was not that great, hence the three-star review. The temperature in the restaurant was freezing. Not just cold but freezing. The temperature outside was pretty cool and they had the a/c on and the front door open. There was a woman at the table next to us who actually was wearing a restaurant table cloth because she was so cold. I had a jacket on and was still cold. The second reason the restaurant experience was not that great was that we had to wait a long time for everything to come out. Getting drinks was ridiculous. Every round of drinks took forever--we should have just ordered two drinks each time so that we would not have to wait as long. Even after dinner when we ordered espressos/cappuccinos and grappa, the coffees came out first and by the time we flagged down a manager to ask where our alcohol was, the coffee was freezing cold (it did not help that the restaurant was the temperature of a walk-in cooler). Back to the 55 several times since an awful experience years ago. And God knows things have changed. Lack of staff everywhere, less clients dining out, restaurants struggling to survive. Despite all this, 55 was able to retain a really good chef. The menu is solid, I was able to taste all the appetizers and most entrees for the last 3 months. Never disappointed and sometimes even amazed with some unique dishes. The artichokes are delicious and the pork chop is most of the time incredible. The team does a great job. Hat tip: the Thursday evening dinner with Half off on the wine list. Knowing that the choice is large and the price positioning already agressive, it is a no brainer. read more

An unbridled "meh". From their website, a headshot and blurb regarding the chef-owner: "Executive Chef and Owner Nube Siguenza is known for putting her spin on traditional old world foods." I experienced no such spin. Steak tartare was nicely done and fairly portioned however it was served with a raw quail egg atop-- which isn't the issue. By raw I mean, complete in shell which I had to manually crack tableside and, predictably, shatter everywhere and contaminate the egg. Quail eggs are less likely to contain salmonella than chicken eggs but the execution here was sloppy. My bigger issue was with, of all things, the Caesar salad. Bite sized cuts of romaine felt overwhelmingly insitutional and reminded me of a restaurant I worked in twenty years ago, wherein they'd store precut romaine in a plastic bucket of ice water for days on end in the walk-in. The lettuce did read as fresh but the mayo-like dressing and straight up commercial crouton were disappointing. Completely edible but thoroughly banal, the tempo of the dining floor reflected this overall sense of malaise. Sparse tables, listless and unengaged staff (I should note that did their jobs, just perfunctorily), a distinct lack of atmosphere. I don't expect sparkle on a Tuesday night but this particularly forgettable visit highlighted my general lack of interest in 55. Despite having been in previously and never having had a specifically bad experience, this one included, I am just not hooked. read more

Well, this place is very convenient to the Fairfield Train Station and has a very nice ambiance. You can sit at the bar, on the sidewalk, at a table inside or a high table next to the bar. The entire front is open air in nice weather, so even if you're inside---you're out. The food here isn't very good however. They brought us some not so good bread for the table along with butter and some mysterious substance with the consistency and color of dry peanut butter. Spread on the bread, it was tasteless with a slight fishy aroma. I was told by the waiter that it was hummus. No way! I have eaten hummus my entire adult life and this was either not hummus or the worst tasting hummus I've ever had. See photo of this awful spread. Ordered 2 appetizers: grilled octopus w/chorizos and crispy artichokes. Both were average to below. The octopus and chorizo was sliced so thin, and the entire dish was covered with a brown sauce. There was more sauce than octopus. The crispy artichokes were tasty but the portion was pretty skimpy. In summary, nice place for a glass of wine or a beer sitting outside but I wouldn't go back for the food. read more

They have a nice little outdoor patio setting and if you opt to go indoors check out their unique and beautiful dining room! Also if you are looking to host a shindig check out their private room upstairs. Everything we had from the charred octopus, short rib Mac and cheese to the steak and their linguini vongole (to name a few of my favorites) were absolutely delicious. If you are looking for something on the healthier side their shaved Brussels sprouts salad is super refreshing! While I have experienced some incredibly fun nights out at 55 Wine Bar & Grille with my friend group when their dance floor is open and drinks are pouring, the sit down dinner I experienced tonight was anything but fun. We had made a reservation in advance for 8 people to sit and eat for a birthday celebration, upon arrival they made our table available for 6 and gave us an attitude about adjusting to meet our parties needs (even though these had been prearranged prior to our arrival). The service was incredibly slow, even though there were no more than 8 tables in service with patrons. In fact, we had to call on our waiter who was standing aloof at the cash register to take our drink orders after waiting more than 15 minutes after sitting. The service continued to prove slow over the course of the evening, when we had to call on him again for appetizer service, then after waiting nearly an hour call on him again to take our dinner order. Let's talk about the food; while the menu is filled with what appears to be appetizing entree after entree, the quality of our meals was subpar (one of our attendees had to send back a salad for undercooked chicken). The scallops I had looked delightful, but were similar to the upscale quality of an Italian meal at Olive Garden; and at $27, you'd expect something more delectable. As we were sitting outside, when it began to rain, no one took attention in attempting to accommodate a new location for our party. The reason this review received more than one star for lack of service and sub-par food has to do with their somewhat attentive skill of noticing our reservation included a birthday where they served a free dessert to the birthday girl. Our bill scaled over $500, not including the nearly $100 pre-adjusted gratuity for a larger party size (something we equated to the lack of ideal service, they were already receiving their tip). Then my wife turns bottle around to reach and notices not the one i wanted by back label. $50 difference between #85 and #86. Ordered the charred octopus app. If there were 6 small slivers i would be shocked!!! Plate was loaded with all types of potatoes and no octopus. For that price, i expect what i get at other places which is 2 full pieces of at least 6 inches long. I had the Chicken Picata and it came with zero sauce and was so dry! My wife had the scallops and asked for gluten free with mushrooms. They left the rice off AND the mushrooms and the side veggies were so so. Second bottle of wine, he made good on and adjusted the price from the first mistake, but again i was not poured a glass after tasting. This was my first time eating octopus so I had nothing to compare it to, wasn't bad in my opinion. My boyfriend said it was alright and that it was better another time he had it here. I had the pork chop, delicious! Brussels sprouts were yummy, mashed potatoes were creamy, pork chop was tender. My boyfriend had the prosciutto pizza. He said it was very dry, there was no sauce! I'm sure that's how it comes but what is a pizza with no sauce? Just bread with toppings. Had the creme brûlée and an espresso for dessert, both were divine! Food good to great; service great; location great. There's really nothing bad here and in the nicer months, the open/outdoor format makes it a must go to location. The bartenders know their stuff and make some great cocktails. The menu is good but similar to Harvest (their other locations). I attended a bridal shower here. I was impressed with the h'orderves : crostini with tomato and fresh mozzarella, skewers of beef, charcuterie board ( no crackers though) and slices of thin crust cheese pizza. After a cocktail hour in which we played an ice - breaker bingo game, we went to the upper level for a 3 course meal. I had the Caesar Salad ( with actual fish in it) ricotta gnocchi and the tiramisu. The chicken entree came with spicy sausage and mashed potatoes. I called and made a reservation for a party of 8 (also said it was for a birthday celebration), two weeks in advance. When we arrived to the restaurant, they could not find our reservation anywhere. They were able to seat us, which was great, until we met our server. I don't even know what his name was. It was our first time here and he was quiet the entire time. He never introduced himself. Never told us if there were any specials... nothing... He seemed more annoyed that he had to serve a table of 8 last minute. He took our drink order, served our drinks, and left for a very long time. He finally came back to take our appetizer and entree order. You'd think you would ask if you would like to start with an appetizer when the drinks hit the table? We also had a bug in one of our guest's water. Our guest sat there for 20 minutes, until we finally got the water girls attention. She was very nice and quickly replaced it... Food and atmosphere was very nice. But, overall it was just an awkward experience, especially for a birthday celebration...Maybe if the reservation was written down.. they might have been more accommodating? They just seemed annoyed, as we were annoyed they couldn't find our reservation. read more

Came here for my sisters graduation and mothers day celebration. I was very pleased with the menu which had a great selection.The food was fantastic! To start, i ordered the Tuna Tartar served with fresh potatoes chips . For my meal I ordered the half chicken scarpiello which was a large portion size and was slightly spicy.Upon arrival, the staff was very friendly and professional, especially Patti, who ran the event. She made excellent food suggestions as well made sure the day ran smooth. She set up a beautiful bubbly bar that was a cute touch to the celebration. Due to the high volume of guests, the service was close to average, but Patti overcompensated by being on top of the staff and kept them moving.
