A tiny out of the way cafe but so worth finding. All the food is fresh and servings are huge. This is another one of my visit. Always take my out of town guests here and they always leave with gratuitously full tummy's. The service is swift. Easy to locate (right off Cerillos/Hwy 14). Parking is limited and awkwardly shaped so hard to get in and out of a spot. Staff is "souper" friendly and accommodating. You order up front and then hopefully find a seat. Food came out quickly and was delicious. The soup was simply...amazing. Creamy. LOTS of mushrooms. The sandwich was good as well. The apple gave it that little extra something. They offer a flight of soups and that will definitely be my order at our next visit. Nice little lunch restaurant in Santa Fe. You order at the counter in a room upon entering the restaurant. After ordering to go to a small room off to the side with a few tables for dining. A server will bring out your food. By the way the service was great. I had the Roasted Vegetable Sandwich which was delicious and outstanding! Cold day - hot soup. Hmmm sounds like a good idea. It's small & parking sucks. A few spots in the parking lot then to the street to hunt. Ok, parked and entered a small area to order and pay. Then to a dining room off to the side to grab one of 7 tables. We ordered the Green Chile Philly add a cup of Split Pea Soup. Plus the Souper Star Grilled Cheese Combo with the Hungarian Mushroom Soup and 2 ice teas. Sodas are by the can, no sweeteners at the table. Not to worry we bring our own straws & sweetners with us. After a brief wait our lunch comes out. It's a lot - probably could have held up on the soup. The Split Pea soup was delicious & thick with small cubes of ham. Reminded me of a restaurant in the west coast whose signature dish is split pea soup. The Philly was loaded with meat & cheese. However it became an open face sandwich very quickly. The Grilled Cheese was equally thick with ingredients. It wasn't greasy, the apple slices - grilled? added sweetness. The Hungarian Mushroom soup was excellent - rich & buttery. A fun mom and pop shop that I'll keep returning to. The menu changes periodically and so far I haven't been disappointed! The staff is kind and everything comes out quickly. I definitely suggest the grilled cheese. It does have apple slices on it which may seem weird but I found it to be a lovely addition in flavor and texture. On my first day in town this week, I met the owner at another restaurant, where we had both stopped for a drink. She told me about her business and before leaving gave me a business card which offered a free cup of soup. Always up for good soup, I took her up on the offer and I really glad I did. Soup Star is one of those out of the way restaurants that is easily over looked. It's location is neatly tucked in between several other small businesses off Cerrillos on Vegas Verde. Inside it's much larger than it appears. The menu offers a wonderful selection of gourmet soups and sandwiches without the gourmet price. I had the Butternut Squash soup and a grilled cheese sandwich on sour dough bread. Both were delicious and filling. Definitely give this place a try!!! I'm going back before I leave town so I can try a few more dishes. You're gonna love it!! read more

Let me start by saying the service was very welcoming, sweet and overall great! Beautiful small dining area inside with unique style. I only ordered a salad and sparkling water but it was a perfect mid day meal for $9! They served my sparkling water with a cup of ice and a wedge of lemon. The place was packed everyone looked happy, quick friendly service by a loving family with delicious food. The exact things (soup/sandwich/empanada) won't necessarily be there when you come, but it doesn't matter. What matters is how well everything was made. The chicken orzo soup was great, the Hungarian mushroom soup was great, the calabacitas empanada had a crust that was a work of art, and the green chile philly cheese steak was great (and the bread was again, just fantastic). After having had all of that, we came away convinced that on any given day that you go, no matter what they have that day, the food is going to be exemplary. Also, they were really nice and gave good service too. So, if you want to have nice places, go to this one and keep them thriving. read more

Hard to find but worth it. Such a sweet little small business with giant customer service. They have quite a list of fresh soups everyday as well as several salads and sandwiches to go with. The soups are the stars but do NOT leave without having their chicken empanada...it is amazing. Hubby and I each had a cup of soup and split the empanada and left with full tummies. Read about this in the papers recently and decided to try it out with a favorite lunch companion. Easy to find, good off street parking. Arrived at 11:45 and was greeted by the hostess just inside. We briefly discussed the menu which changes frequently and I ordered and paid for a bowl of soup and a sandwich with water to drink. My companion hadn't arrived yet so I found a table in the dining room and waited. The dining room is small but pleasant with lots of artwork hanging and about six tables. Curtain filtered light through southeast windows provided a pleasant visual sense. The single "one size fits all" restroom situated just at the dining room entrance was clean, neat and ADD compliant. I munched on a bag of chops while waiting and she showed up within minutes, looked over the menu and ordered soup and a salad. After a brief wait, we had a small basket with sliced baguette and butter along with our food selections. My bowl of soup was generous, vichyssoise with some herbs sprinkled on top, while she had a cup of the mushroom soup, also a generous size and a large salad. My sandwich was meatloaf with melted Swiss cheese and Russian dressing, grilled and hot; Sort of an odd take on a Reuben. Both our meals were well prepared and nicely presented without fanfare. The eating utensils are of good quality unlike many smaller establishments, dishes appropriate to the food. The food was about as expected, tasty, freshly done and of ample quantity. At some point several other diners arrived and even with their conversations, the room was pleasantly quiet. We chatted and enjoyed our food for a bit before my companion got a carry out container for the large amount of salad left after she'd had all she wanted. I've given it four stars as it seems a bit pricey, not unreasonable but a bit stiff for a casual lunch. I'll be back to try their other soups but may forego a sandwich and just have the soup with bread and butter. Overall a pleasant experience in an easy location with good food, prompt service and decent ambience. Their daily menu is posted on line too. read more
