I should give only one star, but in the hope that the restaurant will read this review and address the issues -- let's start with two and hope things improve.
I've been a huge fan of Sortrel Thai ever since they opened. The restaurant is always clean and deserves big points for courteous and efficient staff; both of these things are still true -- which is part of the reason for two stars. Consistently good staff and cleanliness count, no matter what.
When they first opened, the portions were generous with meats and veggies cooked to perfection and plenty of sauce. Good quality rice was always served fluffy. I often brought friends and family there pre-pandemic. It was my favorite sit-down restaurant. Reasonably quiet, good service, and delicious food that didn't disappoint.
Weathering the pandemic storm, restaurants have understandably had a hard time during the past three years. Sortrel Thai did a better job than most, especially transitioning to carry-out service only while maintaining a strong client base. Quality didn't seem to suffer too badly throughout.
Sadly, something has changed and not for the better. Allowing for inflation and the inevitable shrinkflation that accompanies it, this restaurant is starting to fray.
Portions are considerably smaller (25-30%) while prices have risen noticeably higher (in some cases by as much as 50% or more).
One notable example is the rice. Whereas they usually served a generous portion included with carry-out meals, and an extra portion of the same size could be purchased for only $1 more -- now the rice portion has been cut in half and a half-size carry out container costs $2.
In addition, the quality of rice is far lower. It used to be larger grains that were tender and fluffy, not sticky or tacky. It's now smaller grains, that are so flat, sticky, and clumpy -- it's almost impossible to flake apart. Gummy, chewier rice that sticks in your teeth doesn't enhance any meal.
Meat of every kind is often overcooked and tough. There is virtually no sauce in many dishes anymore, and so the end result is often an inferior dish overall from start to finish.
Sortrel Thai used to be an exceptional, stellar restaurant and someplace I went in person (or for carry-out) twice a month or more. But for the last six months or so, it's been once every other month.
What has changed? Maybe there's a new chef, maybe it's cost-cutting, or fill-in-the-blank. But if things keep going the way they're going, then I predict Sortrel Thai will be on its way out.
People will stay loyal forever as long as you keep serving good food at a reasonable price. If prices rise, then quality has to remain exceptional. High prices and "meh" food means this restaurant has stopped making an effort.
I hate to think I may have to look elsewhere for good Thai cuisine, but Sortrel is no longer measuring up. I really hope they can turn things around. read more
