Thai by Thai is a hidden gem in Sterling that deserves so much more love! I had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Eed, who was incredibly kind and welcoming. She previously operated several Thai by Thai locations throughout the DMV but has since consolidated them into this final Sterling location. Locals clearly already know how good it is--we visited during a quieter afternoon, but people consistently stopped in for takeout. We tried the Kao Tod Nam Sod, Doo Dee Ma Nao, Kao Kai Jeaw Goong Sub, green curry with beef, Koey See Mee, curry puffs, fried bananas, mango sticky rice, and Thai iced tea. We also had the opportunity to try dishes from the secret menu that I had never seen offered at other Thai restaurants. Everything was flavorful, fresh, and absolutely delicious. The handmade curry puffs were a major highlight. Eed makes the pastry herself, and the outer layer is incredibly thin, light, and delicate. They sell out quickly, so I highly recommend calling ahead to reserve an order if you want to try them. Make sure you also save room for the fried bananas and mango sticky rice! The food is fantastic, the owner is wonderful, and you can tell how much care goes into everything. If you're in the Sterling area, stop by, ask about the secret menu, and support this longtime local restaurant. I truly want to see this place succeed! read more

Thai by Thai used to be our go-to as expressed in my prior review. We haven't been in quite some time as other new Thai joints have popped up in the Reston area with better ambiance and tasty food. We were in the area looking for lunch so decided to stop in. Food is still good and we went with our usual selections. The problem was the service...curt and abrupt...just not too pleasant. May not be back now that we have better options. read more

No complaints from me here. I usually will visit once in awhile after I get my hair done in the same plaza and it's usually not busy during the day. The workers are always pleasant and the food is good. There is enough seating for groups in here as well. These are the longest spring rolls I've ever seen but they were good and I like their Thai iced tea read more

This establishment is where I became a Thai Tea - Holic. It was in the early 2000s when I was still a young guy and tried Thai Iced Tea for the first time that wasn't my Mom's. This place has the closest taste to the Thai Tea I so loved and drank my entire life. If anyone is a Thai Tea expert, I would confidently say it's me, and there is nobody close. Okay with the little Thai tea rant out of the way, the sun dried beef here is great. I used to get served by the same guy when I was a kid and even though I don't think he works there anymore, the staff were still nice and friendly to me. This place is great for people with light sensitivity like myself as the inside is mellow and darkish orange themed on the eyes. Overall, this place set the ground work of my Thai Tea ventures. Thank you Thai by Thai read more

Located on Route 7 in a shopping center with lots of parking. You order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. The service is quick. My first time here was with a friend. We shared dumplings (more like shumai), sun-dried beef, crab meat fried rice, and chicken pad Thai. Came back myself for shrimp pad Thai. Food is solid - large portions and tasty. read more

We came for dinner and quickly realized this is really more of a lunch spot. There's no table service. You order at the counter, yet you're still prompted to leave a 15-20% tip. The portion sizes felt more in line with lunch than dinner. The food itself was average. The restaurant was also nearly empty around 6 pm on a Friday evening, which added to the overall impression. read more

Tried the veg spring rolls, but unfortunately the food didn't meet my expectations. The taste and quality were not very satisfying. On a positive note, the staff was friendly and attentive, which made the experience a bit better. The ambience is quite casual and simple. Overall, the service was good, but the food needs improvement. read more

Delivery order arrived well ahead of schedule. Thai by Thai is always good, but I wondered how dekivery would be. Sure enough, they came through. I ordered just my typical: spring rolls, Tom Yum soup, and Pad Thai. Excellent. Yes, I'll order again. And next time, I'll be more adventurous. read more

This place is textbook mid thai food. The ambiance & decor is a bit...shabby. Tables look like they're from the 80s. Random cookware sitting around. 24-packs of Heinekens by the front counter. Despite looking like a table-service restaurant, you don't have a waiter, and must go up to the front to see the menu and order. The Good: The thai iced teas are big, looks like a full pint to me, this is much more than most other thai restaurants, who usually serve it in a much smaller cocktail glass. The fried chives are delicious - great dipping sauce, large portions, crispy outside and tender, chewy inside. The bad: Unfortunately the entrees were extremely underwhelming overall, especially after the stellar chives. Pad Ka-prow (chili thai basil) - not enough sauce. The sauce that's there isn't very flavorful, not enough garlic, not enough thai basil (I saw something like 5 leaves in the whole bowl!). Too many onions, and the onions aren't properly caramelized or charred. Green beans aren't fully cooked. The chicken was tender and juicy though. Drunken Noodle - it's not a saucy dish normally, but this one was bone-dry, much drier than it should be. The vegetables were cut way too chunky, and on top of that it was not an appetizing mix of vegetables. Too many carrots, and the carrots were extremely thick-cut. Way WAY too much cabbage. The dish was overall lacking flavor. read more

The best Thai Food I have eaten since moving to the Loudoun County area. Quality service by a sweet and friendly staff.

I'm sad they closed their Fairfax location and Sterling is the only one left. The food is good for a fast, casual environment. My favorite dish here is the Sukihang noodle dish. I haven't seen it offered anywhere else but here. The dishes are offered at an affordable price. read more

Not to be confused with Thai Square in Arlington although they appear to be mathematical equivalent (nerd alert) and another personal favorite of mine, when a place is known for a signature dish, I feel like it is one's culinary duty to order said aforementioned dish on their first visit. At Thai by Thai, that dish is the Kai Rabert. Loosely translated as "exploding egg", it's two fried eggs topped with minced chicken and a spicy red chile sauce served over a bed of rice. I imagine Kai Rabert to be a Thai monk in the Kill Bill multiverse whose finishing move is the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique, where upon after finishing said meal, one takes 5 steps out of the restaurant, their heart explodes, and instantly die happy. I was skeptical when a friend recommended it since it sounded so simple, but sometimes those deceptively simple dishes are much more impressive than something loaded with luxurious ingredients. Let's break down what makes this dish so great. The star is the fried eggs, perfectly runny but with the egg white portion with lots of thin fried edges running along its circumference due to a generous amount of oil and high heat. Pro tip if ordering this to go, immediately pre explode your eggs with several good stabbing prior to placing the dish in your car such that the heat from the other ingredients do not further harden the yolks, otherwise you will end up with Kai Regret rather than Kai Rabert. The other half of this dish is the ground chicken with the red chili sauce. It's like an Asian sloppy Joe where the sauce and meat bind together very well with just the right amount of heat, sweetness, and umami that keeps one spooning additional bites with the rice and runny egg. The Thai iced tea is well above average as a refreshing accompaniment whereas the other dishes were fairly unremarkable compared to their signature dish, but perhaps there may be some other hidden gems waiting to be discovered on future visits, but I will be hard pressed to omit the Kai Rabert in my order. read more

The food portions are kid-size for the price point. They have no concern in actually serving the customer a meal, rather serving themselves a payment. I ordered spring rolls and they gave them to me half wrapped in aluminum foil so the warmth leaked out immediately. The small container of rice, mixed vegetables and fried egg I ordered was thrown together, not mixed. And the portion size was incredibly small. I will never return as a customer. The charged me almost $30 for a small container of rice and 2 spring rolls. Shockingly overpriced. read more

Yes we have been going there since 2005 food is good menu is busy we stick to few known and tried tested since reluctant to try something new.. behind counter wall there is menu they try to rush you to order so you just order normal fried rice/ drunken noodle to pad Thai etc. Most of them have Thai names not sure how to order or what's in it. So go online research write down what you want and then order. I see ethnic people eating different food and wouldn't be nice to ask what they are eating which looks good. Hope they have clear understandable menu. Not chalk board with cursive hand written read more

This place was decent but I did notice their serving sizes are smaller than other restaurants. I tried the garden rolls and those were really good. Also tried the chicken pad Thai and the panang curry. I think the pad Thai was a little above average but nothing amazing. The chicken was kind of hard and they didn't give much of it. Also the noodles were slightly dry. I thought the panang had great flavor but was so runny and not as creamy as other places make it. Overall, solid food but not somewhere I'd choose to get Thai from first. read more

I've ordered delivery from this place for a few years and the food is always hot and delicious. Tonight I stopped in for the first time, the restaurant smells amazing, is clean and well decorated. THAI / STERLING, VA / DINNER TO-GO / 07-16-20 +You can order online and their descriptions are pretty well-written. This is a major plus for the adventurous foodies who want to try new cuisines. +A lot of unique dishes and specialty offerings; e.g., Food Tour menu, Street Food menu, and Classic entrees. +The online ordering via the Toast app can be very customized, to your specifications, which is pretty cool! +Their pad thai dish is probably one of the best in the NoVA region, very similar to what I have had in Thailand. +The papaya salad was excellent. +They have a loyalty rewards program via the Fivestars app. -I was not sure what the "wet style" option was when ordering online. -Like some of the other reviews, the portions can run on the small side. Nonetheless, the food is very delicious and flavorful. -The takeout utensils were not individually wrapped, which is a concern during the COVID-19 situation. At least wrap the fork/spoon/chopstick with a napkin and sticker? Overall, we need more Thai restaurants like Thai by Thai. They are a well-planned and thought out establishment. Please continue to expand your brand and market footprint! What we ordered: '1 Northeast Trio 13.55 Sundried Beef Not spicy '1 Pad Thai with 8 Shrimp $13.55 Medium Crushed peanuts on the side. Best Thai food in Northern VA! The Tom Kha Gai soup was world class and the Tom Yum dish was superb. The coconut rice is not to be missed as it was flavorful and the texture was perfectly sticky. We also got shrimp fried rice and papaya salad to go because they were big hits in the past. Tasty Thai food which is a great value is truly a challenge to find and the folks who run this place are friendly and helpful. read more

Came down to the area to visit a friend and cravin Thai food. Cute little place with affordable price and yes yummy food. Ordered drunken noodles, Bangkok spicy and I have to say I should have done spicy! I went by review but I should have known I could handle more for someone who eats spicy food. Very tasty drunken noodles and I opted in for both beef and shrimp as protein. Ordered curbside pick up and called as I got there, lady came out and delivered right away. The one less portion is for the portion; could def be improved. But won't stop me from coming back when I'm around here. Oh, plenty outdoor seatings available on the side :). We were in the area and a friend suggested we try this Thai restaurant out. Plenty of seating is available. After you place your order with the cashier, you are given a number card. The cashier was so sweet and had a lovely personality. Place your number card on the holder at the table. When your order is ready, a kind employee brings the food over to the table. There is no waiter service. Drinks, take out boxes, etc. are within reach. We enjoyed the dishes ordered. Their Panang Chicken and Drunken Noodles were some of our favorites. Their Thai Iced Tea is also wonderfully delicious. I wouldn't say this is my ultimate favorite place to get Thai food but it was still incredibly good. The restaurant was clean and organized. Once you are done eating, you can leave your dishes at the table and a sweet employee will clear the table. This is a great spot for a quick bite with friendly service. read more

Ordered for delivery with UberEats; got tom kha ga, sun dried beef, fried tofu, and papaya salad. Really good food! Almost as good as my Thai stepmom's. Sun dried beef portion was a little small, but tofu, papaya, and soup were large enough for leftovers. I will definitely eat here again. Other reviewers are correct on spice level: if you want a kick, order medium spice or higher. Mild was, in fact, very mild. Also, the packaging was perfect for to-go order. Found it very thoughtful that they poked holes in the corner of the styrofoam packages with the fried tofu and beef to help keep them from getting soggy in transport. read more

Not sure why this place has so much hate. This is some of the best Thai food I've had in Northern VA, which is saying a lot. The interior is more like a low-key diner than a fancier sit-down restaurant. We came to pick up a to-go order, and they got everything correct (always nice). FYI: you are not going to get giant portions here. But the food is great. Their "Secret" Street Menu items were wonderful. Can't go wrong on anything there. Keep in mind, we're adventurous eaters though, not pad thai and fried rice people. They have 5 levels of spice, but if you want to actually taste spice, make sure you order it *AT LEAST* a medium. Bangkok spicy and Crazy is where it's at if you want some actual heat though. My husband loves spicy food. I got his stuff medium, and it wasn't spicy enough for him. Medium was perfect for me, someone who enjoys a little heat but not much. We will definitely be back for more delicious Thai food! read more

Worst experience- they were very rude, we called ahead to asked if they had dine in seating, once we got there and tried sitting at the boots they yelled at us saying they just waxed when it was only 9pm and they closed at 11pm. We asked to get our food to go and they said it would be best if we didn't. Like what?! Ok thank you for the extreme rudeness and attitude! The food is not good enough for the level of attitude and service. Classic. read more

Fantastic place for new Thai food! We are Thai fanatics and this place has new things for us to try and more variety. Speed was fast! Food was good! What more could I ask for? Just the sauces for the satay and things were a little small but small details. Overall experience really nice. Ambience: Cafe Like Cleanliness: Great! Quality of food: 10/10 One curry / noodle dish can probably feed 2-3 people depending on appetite portions. Not pictured, also tried the Kua Gai (I forgot the name oops) but that was really good, something new!! Thank you again! Will be back for more. read more

I was jonesing for Thai while shopping; I wasn't familiar with the area, so Google directed me to Thai by Thai. Small and neat, the menu is not expansive, but all the Thai staples are there. I had the dumplings, green curry, and hot jasmine tea. The lady behind the counter was quick, accurate, and mentioned that they'd just turned the hot water urn on, so if my tea wasn't hot enough, to please let her know (spoiler alert: my tea was fine). The dumplings were good. Nothing spectacular, but good solid Thai dumplings, with just enough sauce. The curry was VERY good. Normally these days, it's sugared-up for American tastes, and I have to drown it in salt so that it doesn't taste like candy. Not here! I ordered it extra-spicy, and it was delicious! My only complaint is that the rice seemed a little overdone; it was a touch crunchy. I'm very happy to have found this place, and will definitely go back in future! Thanks, Google! read more

Honestly one of the best restaurants in all of Sterling. Owner and cashiers are always very nice, and the food is absolutely amazing every time. I am a "spice lover" and have been ordering the highest spice level here on a weekly basis for many months. The chefs do a spectacular job balancing heat and flavor. Personally, I get the pork Ka-Prow fried rice and Woo Sen soups, both spiciest level. I crave them at least once per week! Ive recently started exploring the "street food" menu, which I think is supposed to be more authentic, Thai street food staples. Everything I've had from this restaurant has been to die for! Very happy they've survived through COVID and hope to be able to order my favorites for years to come. read more

I've been to many Thai restaurants and always order either pad Thai or drunken noodles and have never been hungry still after eating my order. The food portion at Thai by Thai is very little. I am very picky in my thai food after going to Thailand. This place served fast thai food. I thought it tasted a little better than the average thai place but nothing special. My husband ordered a spring roll. I grabbed a bite and I really enjoyed the freshness of the veggies. The chicken was slightly dry but tasty. My curry seafood was tasty with some spicy. I wish it came with more shrimp and less rice. I would recommend bringing a sweater when you come here because this place was extremely cold. read more
