Hubs and I were craving hot spot one evening and found Sorimmara on Yelp. Sorimmara is a South Korea-based Malatang restaurant that specializes in Malatang. You can build your own bowls from the bar with options like beef, ramen noodles, fish balls, tofu, seafood, greens, and more. The bowls are priced by the pound, and you can also build your own sauce. We were greeted upon entering. Since it was our first time, the kind staff patiently walked us through the process of building your own. They have so many options, even for pescatarians and vegetarians. My husband and I were so excited, we went a little crazy. They recommend choosing 1-1.5 pound worth of ingredients and we both went over. The final step is choosing your flavor and spice levels. We both opted for #1, the malatang. For my spice level, I chose medium and my husband chose extra hot. They warned him it would be very spicy, but he likes it that way. The staff then pre-cooks the food and serves it in hot pot to keep it hot. You're able to control the heat. Oh my goodness. It was so, SO good! Flavorful and spicy. We built our own sauces at their sauce bar and came up with some really tasty ones. We couldn't finish our food, but we were able to take them to go. **This review is strictly for the malatang ONLY!** If you like having a strangely uncomfortable tingling taste on your tongue and inside your mouth, then get the spicy malatang. If you prefer feeling comfortable, then get the creamy malatang! Ok, fine, some people might like the spicy malatang, but this is the first time I've tried spicy malatang, and it will be my last for as long as I can help it! There's nothing fancy about this restaurant. It's DIY, self serve. For the malatang, you grab a very large bowl and put everything your heart desires in it (I'm talking about seafood, meats, protein, veggies, carbs, etc, not everything you desire in a man/woman), you bring it to the counter, and pick your soup base, and they bring it out on a burner, and you start chowing! Pretty easy and simple! They have a self serve sauce bar with all the different sauce recipes that you can create as many saucy combinations as you like! Me and my bf love this place! every time I come to AZ to visit we have to come here at least once. for the first time ever this weekend they were busy on friday night, maybe it was the time we stopped by but we had to wait 20 minutes for a table. Our favorite is the rose malaxiangguo, rich and creamy, however it's easy to get tired of the tick flavor quickly. I tried the malatang for the first time and the flavor was great too, would recommend if you want something less heavy. the pork guobaorou is a must!! very interesting "breading" has a chewy texture and the sauce is orange-y sweet and sour! I'm so obsessed now! This is a weigh by pound thing where you fill up a bowl with your raw ingredients and they cook it up for you in the back. There's a beef broth, a rose broth, and also some stir fry options. The rose was good but a little heavy so I went with the beef broth the second time around which I definitely enjoyed more (it's also a few dollars cheaper by lb). I was a fan of Sorimmara when they first opened in Chandler at 99Ranch Food court. Very pleased to have an actual location nearby me! This spot is pretty small with limited seating so be mindful if you have a large party or you can get lucky if some booths are empty to combine. The selection offered many different meats and veggies. This location differs from chandler since they have a sauce bar and personal heating stove for the hotpot. Some people had to be turned away because a table was reserved for 7pm and at the time, it would only allow customers 30 min to eat, so people had to leave. That's a bummer. The bowls are giant and they do that so when you pick your toppings, you feel like you don't grab enough and when it's time to weigh it, you're like darn, I got greedy. That's not just unacceptable--it's a serious food safety hazard that could have caused real harm. To make matters worse, the squid had a strong, unpleasant odor, suggesting it wasn't fresh. I was so shocked and angry in the moment that I forgot to take photos, but I wish I had, because no one should ever encounter something like that. The ingredients were very fresh looking and clean, and some highlights include baby octopus, scallop, and cheese filled tteobokki. Unfortunately they only have malatang or rose malatang as soup base options, but they could make the malatang with no spice if requested. I got a level 4 spicy soup - it was spicy but not too excessively oily, which meant that the soup was still somewhat drinkable. The pork guabaorou was also on sale for $10 for a small portion, and it was surprisingly crispy yet light at the same time. This was a fun experience. Everyone was friendly and attentive although if this is your first time it definitely can be confusing so make sure you ask questions! I should have added more protein and veggies and a lot less noodles but now I know for next time. The flavors of the bases can be powerful. I am not a huge fan of the star anise, fennel (black licorice taste) and was not prepared for this flavor of the mala. Now I know and at least I can say that I experienced it. Ordered the Malatang and rose Malarang. Favor was great for both. Options we added in was great. Didn't love the crab balls, they had been very salty. The service to start was welcoming and great. Sadly the reason for the low score is due to the experience. We advised it was our first time in. NEVER did they mention that being slightly over the minimum pound, that they automatically bumped you up to 2lbs. They seemed to tell us to continue to add more weight since we don't hit 1lb exactly. Our first time at Sorimmara this weekend and did not know what to expect but overall the experience was pleasant. I love hot pot and this is a different take on what I have previously tried before. You basically fill your bowl with the food items you want like noodles, fish cake, veggie, seafood and meats then pick if you want stir fry or hot pot. My husband and I both did the Malatang soup which is spicy soup with has sichuan pepper in it so it does have that numbing taste to it. It's very good. I would come back but I would share the bowl next and maybe order mild lol. Very nice to wash it down with some banana milk after. Super chill, build-your-own bowl hot pot place with a lot of varieties for meats, veggies and dumplings. You have an option for broth or dry/stir fry option. I did the #5 stir fry option and it was very tasty and had a nice tingling/numbing sensation. We also tried #2 & #1 and I would say #2 was probably everyone's favorite. I decided to take my in-laws to Sorimmara last night after seeing it on Instagram--it looked absolutely delicious! The experience did not disappoint. Each of us picked different items from the menu to try. I personally opted for the Malatang, which is a soup-based dish. After choosing your base, you head to the food bar, grab a large bowl, and load up on all the ingredients you want for your entrée. There's a great selection of seafood, meats, veggies, and Korean sides to choose from, and they do have a 1lb minimum. The Malatang soup was packed with flavor--comforting and satisfying! I also tried their banana milk tea and house milk tea, both of which were absolutely delicious. The food was very enjoyable. Another thing that stood out was the service. We got here on a Sunday around 12:20pm. There was only 1 group so we got seated quickly and received a good orientation on how things work. The restaurant has only a few tables so something to take into account if you want to visit during prime hours or with a big group. As other reviews have mentioned, there is a 1-lb minimum for the hotpot and stir fry. We ordered 3 due to different preferences on spice level but it was way too much food. Sharing will work better =). Our pots were all delicious - they cooked and assembled the ingredients you picked in a pot and served on a little stove to keep warm. Rose malatang was so flavorful - just on the heavier side because of the cream. Their "mascot" is adorable and featured inside the restaurant and their restrooms (yes - see pictures). My wife and I just went there for lunch and we were not disapponterd! The malatang is outstanding. You pick your meat, veggies, noodles, etc., put it in a bowl, pay by the pound and they cook it for you. You have a couple options for a broth bowl or stir fried. And several flavors of both. Then you are served at your table with a sterno warmed bowl with your meal in it. My wife opted for shrimp fried rice, since she is not much for spicy food. And it was excellent!! I love spicy anything, and most of the time spicy food in AZ isn't spicy at all. Not today. They have multiple levels of spice so I went with the middle of the road; number 3. It was quite good. Not too spicy and not too mild. Our helpful server also gave me a very small sample side of the level 5 to try. Wow, that was worthy of its "inferno" name. Glad I didn't get my whole meal in that, I think I may have melted... Everything was fresh and delicious. Service was excellent and knowledgeable.
