Probably the best fine dining establishment in the Maple Valley area. Steaks are fantastic and many of which are modestly priced for steakhouse grade food. Wine selection is alright and usually does not disappoint, but they could probably branch out more too. Cocktails are great and their famous tostadas with refried beans and fire roasted salsa served in a molcajete are delicious alternative to chips and salsa. The steak and service alone deserve 5 stars alone. The deduction comes from the variability between other dishes over two visits. The Vacio wagyu is always perfectly tender, and continually warmed on the hot stone with its accompanying salt and chimichurri. That item alone makes me go out of my way to fulfill a craving. An honorable mention goes to their complimentary refried bean tostadas, which is very underrated. The loaded Papa Loca potato is large for sharing, perfectly baked the first time, but underbaked/too starchy the second time. The mushrooms aren't special enough with just a coating of cheese and an unappetizing heavy hand of red pepper flake coating. My toddler honestly has a palate for good burgers, but his dislike was mutual; tasting it it out of curiosity, the wagyu cheeseburger needed more flavor, while the fries seemed over-cooked in old oil. We started going because of so many recommendations, and while the food is very tasty and somewhat affordable for a steak place, the service is so bad the last 2 to 3 times we visited. Drinks arrive after the meal is already done, and the waiters are always running around trying to do a hundred things and not really paying attention to their customers. Me and my family come here A LOT! We used to have dinner here twice a week. That's how good it was. The servers knew us by name, but they have all come and gone except one. The Vacio steak we used to absolutely love is no longer the same. We've been coming to this Sonora since it opened and always rave about our favorite cut of theirs, the Vacio. It used to be so flavorful and juicy. The first time it was different we thought the cook was probably just having an off day. We gave it another chance, and it was again a disappointment. The steak had no flavor and it was so dry. We always order it medium rare. Both times it arrived black on the outside and had a medium rare pink inside, but absolutely no juices flowing. The rare part didn't look rare at all. It was just pink compared to the black outer color. It tasted as if though it was frozen, thawed, cooked half way, then reheated. What happened?! What changed? Is it the steak? Is it the marinade? Is it the cooking process? I don't usually complain about my food, but I wanted to ask about the Vacio so we don't order it again if it is going to be like this from now on. The second time it came out like this we asked to speak to the manager, Nita, to find out what changed. The manager never came to our table! Our server told us he let her know that we wanted to ask a question, but she just relayed a message to us through him that nothing changed. When we were leaving we saw her sitting at a table with some guy. That's pretty bad that she didn't even want to talk to us considering we are regulars here. Very disappointing. If you've been to Asadero, their sister restaurant in Ballard and Kent, you probably don't have to drive all the way to Maple Valley for Sonora Steak. After looking at the menus for Asadero and Sonora Steak, I'd say 85% of the menu is the same, with Asadero ironically having a bit more focus on the steak while Sonora Steak's menu offers tacos in addition to what Asadero has. I don't think the wait seemed very long for Saturday dinner, but you're probably better off making a reservation ahead of time, which is always a plus for restaurants. We were promptly seated and offered fruit of our choosing to add to our water cups. The servers were friendly and quick to provide anything we had asked for. For drinks, I ordered a playa punch from the mocktail menu. My only complaint would be the texture of the drink. I would have preferred it to be strained because I was fighting some seeds and pulp, which made the drinking experience a bit unpleasant. I ordered the pollo asado for my main and found it to be the same as Asadero's. The texture of the chicken also seemed off and possibly a bit overdone, since it was a bit rubbery. Also in a weird way, I think it's a bit too seasoned and flavorful that it takes away from the dish as a whole. Overall, I think you get your money's worth and leave with a belly full and satisfied. Third time dining at Sonora Steak, but likely my last. Quality has gone down. The Prime Ensalada meat was 0ver 50% fat(see photo). To their credit, when we discreetly pointed to the pile of fat left in the plate, the waiter Greg immediately took it to management. Management came over and apologized and took $10 off the $19.99 salad. We have enjoyed the salad in the past and was disappointed in the wilted, wet lettuce and scant toppings compared to the other time we had it. The Pescado Tacos were okay; the halibut was chewy- tough chicken-like chewy. Odd for halibut. My guess is frozen halibut, chopped into small pieces and then grilled makes the fish tough. So strange for fish to be chewy like that. The spicy flavour was gone by the time I was finished chewing. The spice, while tasty, did overpower any halibut taste there may have been. Food aside, our server Greg was attentive, helpful, and nice. Management was friendly. Music loud. Even servers were asking patrons to repeat their requests. But I think it can be paid little more attention before serving. Steak was on okay side too. Wish it came with chimmichurri or salsa option and/or carb option. I added fries on the side, it was kinda soggy but the ketchup was great that they were supporting local brand. I was super disappointed about the flan trio, taste was okay but it was not the texture I expected when ordering flans. We shared the mushrooms and the papa josper. Now the josper was okay. It's a large loaded baked potato. But the mushrooms, wow!!! They were delicious, had great flavor. It was okay, but because they use real raspberries muddled, it was a heck of a lot of seeds which made it hard to sip through a straw or just enjoy the drink all together. We ordered the Delmonico 30oz steak, shared it with my wife, ordered it med-rare and was cooked to perfection, so tender almost melt in your mouth. I have been here a number of times and the food is amazing!! My most recent visit with my family wasn't about food quality but rather the hostess. We walked in when the open at 4:30 without a reservation knowing that half of the restaurant is reserved for walk-ins. The hostess made the rudest comment I've ever heard when she found out we didn't have a reservation. She made a noise with her mouth and tilted her head a said awww that sucks. One of the best Mexican steak houses!!! I love their steaks when it comes out on a sizzling hot stone. The appetizers that I enjoy are the bone marrow (Tuetanos) and guacamole. Waiter had to be reminded of our order. The steak was overpriced and underwhelming. Ordered medium rare, steak was well done on arrival. Since I have never sent a steak back at a restaurant before, I had an internal debate on just eating it as is, but it was supposed to be Japanese A5 and priced accordingly and decided to send it back. The response from the manager left quite a bit to be desired. She then proceeded to double down when the re-fired steak arrived at our table. Steaks are served on an incredibly hot plate/rock/iron thing and will continue to cook after arrival, so plan ahead and order your steak rarer than you'd normally order and ask for an extra plate to account for the carryover cooking. read more

It had a great crunch and flavor from the beans and cheese, and the salsa was fresh and spicy. We ordered the wagyu double burger and $90 rib eye steak. The steak was 50% fat. We've been to many steakhouses (including Asadero, Vue, Cuerno Bravo, etc.) and have not ever had one like this. It seemed like it was either drenched in oil or just an extremely fatty piece that should not have been served. We realized it the more we ate it. The burger was overcooked and bacon was extremely salty. I couldn't eat it or even take it to go. We ordered drinks as well. The beers were barely cold. I did enjoy the watermelon mojito. We were with another couple. We both ordered. We had the demonico and the papa loca potato. It was all very good. The steak had a few pieces of silver meat but the flavor was quite good. The chim churri was delish. My only complaint was that my potato could have used 5 more minutes in the oven. It was just very slightly underdone. I love how they bring the steak out on a griddle that's hot and can cook the meat a little longer. Our cook was en point. As an appy we had the marrow bones. Delish. Again here only complaint would be a few more pieces of bread. We were given 3. It would have been nice to have minimum 8 so we could have all shared. Back to the server. They gave us a full bottle of water to pour for ourselves. As she dropped off our bill I asked for some more water "sure you bet" (spoiler I never saw any water) We were chatting with the other couple and she came back to ask for her pen back which I'm pretty sure was her way of asking for us to go. It was 8:30pm on Sunday. The place was half empty. Had it been packed and people waiting for a table I'd have cleared out long before we did. The food. Just as good as their sister location in Kent. Used to go to the Happy Hour at a nearby Mexican restaurant but they stopped during covid and never brought it back. 3.5 Stars. Definitely the Zabuton, one of my main favorite cuts anywhere I go and it did not disappoint here. Medium Rare Plus is my temp and I ate it as slow as I could to enjoy it (as I always do when I really like something). Small gripe, the sea salt that came with it did not melt, and were like rocks in your mouth you had to break up. The Ora Salmon was delicious. The whole entree screamed healthy, green, and of course King with a nice crunch to it. Small gripe the baby broc was a bit bland. The Salmon was really nice though. El Ribeye was not bad, good, but nothing screaming. Between the El Ribeye $40 18oz, and the Zabuton $40 11oz its no question the Z for me! Of course if you want the extra meat then the Ribeye is your choice. I have no recollection what the creamy side we ordered was, but it was good! The Seasonal Vegetables I prefer a medley instead of a "pick one." Of course, when having steak you got to have mushrooms and for the most part was good but slightly slighty undercooked in the middle. Service was a bit impersonal, constant upselling every single trip to the table. A bit annoying but understood thats the way they are trained. I would suggest the upselling be toned down a bit, and the service was while with big smiles, it was a bit robotic. And the refilling of water was good, however it was spilling all over the table because she was so excited to see if we would re-up on drinks. I was a server, and it was a huge part of me learning so many valuable things in life, I'm sure she will hone the craft as time goes on. Cheesecake was good and a nice end to dinner. Had to wait 10+ minutes for the check though, and it was not tap to pay....I feel like no tap to pay to the table is a bit behind the times but I'm such a snob sigh. The space is nice, contemporary, airy. A manager maybe did come to make sure all was well at the end which was a nice touch. For sure should be in your rotation if you are nearby.
