Passed by and turned back around. Greeted immediately with a friendly staff member and a smile. The decoration and ambiance are on point for this Mexican restaurant, the paintings are fun to look out. They don't do chips they do chicharonnes. The tortilla felt, tasted and looked fresh. Rice and beans on the side. Definitely recommend giving them a try!!

In my original review, I stated that I planned to return for Happy Hour and I did, so this update should tell you everything you need to know before considering Zapatas. As mentioned, they offer 40% off select appetizers. They also only have 6-8 appetizers on the menu, so selection is limited. It's further limited, because in addition, select means entre style appetizers, so you can get nachos or quesadillas, but you can't get guacamole or shrimp cocktail which also appear as appetizers. Good news is Nachos was what I intended to try, so here is my update. The place was dead, a couple left when we walked in and we appeared to be the only guests. Now, from what I'm heard the purpose of Happy Hour is to attract diners at a time things are slow, but we were concerned that we were the only diners. I had some issues with this trip and considered lowering my initial score, but I'll leave it as is with more feedback for the restaurant to consider. I don't like the menu here and I don't see you attracting a crowd or families with this menu. The food is undeniably good, but many of the dishes and combinations we have come to expect are either missing or have an alternative name we would not pick up on. I also say ground beef is a staple in full service Mexican and I'm disappointed it's not an option here. The nachos were $18, that is too much if you ask me, I don't think an appetizer should be more than $12. The irony in that statement is with the 40% off, they became $11. Also, the portion as nowhere near worth $18. Happy Hour used to be a way to actually get discounted food, but more places now serve a smaller portion of whatever the item is, and I suspect that was the case here as the plate the nachos came on was just bigger than a saucer and not the size of a plate and in most cases when I order nachos they don't come on a plate, THEY COME ON A PLATTER! The plate was square about 6x6 perfect size for one, but historically, nachos are a shared dish. Also, they really skimped on the presentation. It was a salad bowl full of chips with beans and cheese, about 3 tablespoons of sour cream and a single tablespoon of guacamole. The capper was I thought chopped steak would be all over the nachos, but what I got was about 2-3 ounces of strips on top. So for those not into weight about the portion you would expect in a taco was on top. This was not worth $18 and quite honestly, not worth the happy hour price. Most places give you chips for free, not here. Some give you bean dip for free, so in my opinion, the steak and cheese are the only real unique items and you are charging $18 for what would be a $4 taco elsewhere. I like my nachos loaded and could have used some diced tomato, fresh, not pickled jalapeno, queso fresca and maybe even a little cilantro, but these guys kept it vanilla. The service was friendly and although slightly more attentive, it was still lacking. Again, we were the only guest and our server disappeared. She mentioned it was so slow she was hanging out in the kitchen. Short of asking for more salsa, we were covered, she did refill drinks and check in with us, but I didn't like asking for more salsa and was getting ready to look for her when she did check in to refill drinks. Again, I think I need to lower the sore here, but hopefully they read this and make some changes. I'd love to com back, but I'm not sure if we will and I'm not convinced this place is going to last without customers, that they are not attracting. I didn't find value in our meal and despite having good flavor, they cut corners on portion. There is serious potential here, but they are not coming close to living up to it, so on that note, I do have to lower my initial score.

Chicken, steak, and shrimp. Chimichurri oil dip was especially good on the shrimp

Food was excellent, friendly staff, fair prices. Can't wait to return! Nothing like the typical mexican restaraunts

Zapatas was fantastic. The food was absolutely incredible, and the atmosphere made the whole experience even better. I had the steak nachos and they were truly phenomenal -- packed with flavor and perfectly prepared. On top of that, the staff was very friendly and made me feel genuinely welcomed. This is definitely a spot I'll be coming back to and recommending to others.

Cocktails are great and their famous tostadas with refried beans and fire roasted salsa served in a molcajete are delicious alternative to chips and salsa. Wish they would just open up for Monday, Tuesday since it's too busy the other days.

The Vacio wagyu is always perfectly tender, and continually warmed on the hot stone with its accompanying salt and chimichurri. That item alone makes me go out of my way to fulfill a craving. An honorable mention goes to their complimentary refried bean tostadas, which is very underrated. The loaded Papa Loca potato is large for sharing, perfectly baked the first time, but underbaked/too starchy the second time. The mushrooms aren't special enough with just a coating of cheese and an unappetizing heavy hand of red pepper flake coating. My toddler honestly has a palate for good burgers, but his dislike was mutual; tasting it it out of curiosity, the wagyu cheeseburger needed more flavor, while the fries seemed over-cooked in old oil. The first time on a weekday, everything seemed great. The second time around for a busy Mother's Day weekend, it just seemed everything was rushed, especially the food preparation.

Our table for four was near the dry-age cabinet, and honestly, seeing all that aged meat was exciting. We ordered the guacamole with fried pork belly, steak fries (two orders because they were that good), three 30-day dry-aged ribeyes (rare, medium rare, and medium), and the Salad Riviera with sliced skirt steak. The pork belly was crispy and tender, and the steaks were juicy, well seasoned, and cooked exactly as ordered. The salad had great texture and balance, though the skirt steak itself was unfortunately a bit dry. The spicy chimichurri was a standout--bright, herby, spicy, and totally addictive. I loved it with the steak and even used it on the salad. Jose was our waiter and was upbeat, attentive, and genuinely made the experience better. Tip: Try the Riesling--it's so good. Between the great steaks and service, we had a thoroughly enjoyable meal. Reservations are a must on weekends, and parking in front and in the back.

It's split by region, which is cool - I am not familiar with Vietnamese regional cuisines, so scrolling through the menu is a learning experience for me. - Northern crab rolls: 2/5, felt a bit heavy for an app - Beef skewers: 5/5, really nice sauce - Golden pho pillows: 4/5, interesting concept and I liked the pillows - Water fern cakes: 4/5, another interesting concept - Hanoi pork vermicelli: 3/5, generally good but didn't feel special - Fish sauce caramel coffee: 5/5, I quite enjoyed this Overall, the food was good. I wasn't impressed with the service, though. We ordered 3 starters, a small dish, and a main dish. All our food came out around the same time, randomly... which led to our food getting cold because we couldn't eat fast enough. I was disappointed that they didn't think through the serving order. I was also served the wrong drink; of course they corrected that. And finally, perhaps because we sat in the back, it was really hard to get our server's attention at the end! I'd definitely come back despite that. The food was good and it's such a pretty location.

Recently, I kept hearing from people that it had gotten a lot better, which is why I decided to bring my mom here for Mother's Day since she loves Vietnamese food. Overall, I would still describe this visit as pretty mediocre. It was not terrible, but it was definitely not worth the price point in my opinion, especially after spending over $400. There were a few dishes I genuinely enjoyed. What we ordered: Liked / okay: * Pho-spiced ribs: tender and flavorful, but expensive for what it is * Lemongrass pork belly: the standout dish. Crispy, juicy, and very flavorful * Shaking wagyu salad: the beef was tender, but it needed more salt. It could benefit from some more oyster sauce or fish sauce * Water spinach with garlic: Good * Southern pork egg rolls: Crispy and enjoyable, but the dipping sauce tasted watered down and lacked flavor Didn't really enjoy: * Clay pot fish: overly sweet and quite fatty. The fish itself was tender * King salmon sour soup: also very sweet. It needed more acidity and sourness, like tamarind * Villagers pork belly: the only noticeably salty dish. It had a strong porky fermented flavor that was good, but it really needs rice and fresh vegetables like cucumber to balance it * Lemongrass clams: fairly plain. The dipping sauce was the same watered-down sauce as the egg rolls * Calamansi margarita: extremely sour and overpowering * Spiked coconut with rum: it was warm, which made it less enjoyable Overall, most dishes leaned too sweet for my taste. Southeast Asian food is usually a balance of sweet, spicy, salty, and sour. Here, the sweetness often overpowered everything else. There were also quite a few items sold out when we arrived around 5 PM. I was not sure if they had been sold out for a while or just for the evening. As for service, ordering is done through an iPad. The first one to two rounds of food came out quickly. However, anything we ordered afterward, like extra rice or additional sides, either took a very long time or never came at all. We also tried using the call function on the iPad, but no one came over. I am not sure if they were short staffed or if the system was not being monitored. The restaurant itself was not busy at the time. Since many of the entrées are meant to be eaten with rice, this disrupted the flow of the meal quite a bit. At one point, we just ate everything without rice because we were hungry and did not want to keep waiting. That said, the staff we did interact with were very kind. Overall, I do not think I would come back for a full dinner again. I might stop in just for happy hour drinks and a few small bites since they have a nice water view!

Back in the day, that exact location used to be a Shari's -- my parents' favorite go-to dinner spot when we wanted a simple family night out. Pancakes, pie, comfort food, booth conversations. Now? It's a Japanese hibachi grill. Full circle. Same building. Different era. New memories. The Experience The food? Good. The prices? Fine. The atmosphere? Great. The service? Okay. But the chef? The chef was the absolute star. He didn't just cook -- he entertained. He engaged everyone at the table. He made it a show. He made it a celebration. That's what you want for an 18th birthday. The fire. The chopping. The jokes. The crowd reactions. You could see my grandbaby soaking it in. And that matters more than anything. The Vibe It's one of those places you go when you want: * Food cooked right in front of you * A little drama with your dinner * Laughter at the table * An interactive experience It's not just eating.
