I went there for a diagnostic check on why my driver side speaker wasn't working. They quoted me on the phone 30 dollars. If it required wiring, 40 dollars. That was fair with me. I went down there, they started inspecting it and took over two hours before coming to me and asking if I had any problems with the power windows. I said no, but I did have problems with the power locks. Well, the mechanic working on my car said he found the problem. Apparently the master switch on the driver side door-which is basically a bunch of wires connecting the power to the speakers, windows, and locks-has wire disconnections.
He showed it to me, and it did look like the wires were so old that they began to fray and become disconnected. But when the mechanic tried to repair the wire for the speaker, another wire become disconnected, and so on. So the mechanic gave up and said I would need to get a new or used master switch. He offered to help me get the part at a discount.
At that point, I was understanding it was an accident and the switch was old, but was disappointed to be leaving with the windows now unable to go up or down (which is way more important to me than the driver side speaker). Although, he did get the power to the driver side speaker working after wiring it independently of the master switch.
After that, they still charged me for the diagnostic and getting the speaker fixed for a now 50 dollars (extra for the extra time, ridiculous!). I accepted the higher amount because I hoped that once I got the part at a discount, they could install it at a discount since they did actually cause the problem.
Well, the discount never materialized. And the part cost around 180 out the door. I spoke with a few other mechanics about the situation and they all agreed Sonic Sound should really fix it without me having to pay because they did cause the problem. Ethically it was the right thing, and plus on my end, I had already paid for the speaker fix (at a higher than quoted price).
I spoke with a helpful mechanic at a Honda dealership, and he straight out told me that the guy who worked on my car didn't know what he was doing. And that in fact I don't need a new part, I can get the master switch repaired. It basically required connecting ends of wires, for about 20 wires. It would take about one and a half hrs. But it's totally repairable.
I called Sonic Sound up afterwards, and spoke with the mechanic who worked my car. I told him it was too expensive to buy the part, and I rather get it repaired. He told me he didn't want to do it because it would take him too long!
The spoke with the owner, and the owner was nice about it. He told me to come in so he can look at it.
So I went in, he looked at it and said he would have another mechanic repair it. I asked if he's going to charge me? He avoided the question. Said it could cost nothing to 50 dollars. I said okay.
After thinking it over when I left, I came to the conclusion that it wasn't right they might still charge me for a problem they caused. So I called them up and said to the manager that I believed I shouldn't have to pay any more than I already had. They agreed to not charge me.
I got the car back and everything worked, except I saw that the tweeter on the passenger side door was popped out. I pointed that out, and they said they didn't work on that side. Here we go again!!! I know for a fact it wasn't like that coming in. But they quickly agreed to fix it. They did, and finally I was done with Sonic Sound.
A big hassle, not straight forward about the price, and shoddy workmanship. I nor anybody else should have to worry that if they come in for a something, they might leave with another or new problem. I advise go somewhere else. There are too many other places to get this kind of work done. Go see some real professionals! Not these amateur wannabes. read more
