We actually ended up at Somorrostro after our initial plans fell through and all I can say is that that was a very, very fortunate event as this place is amazing! The restaurant is down a side street in what appears to be a little more of a residential area than the main road. It's rather small, but cozy and very welcoming. It was quite busy when we arrived, so we had a seat at the end of the bar and were promptly provided a wine list and the menu (which was actually hand written in several languages on a chalkboard behind us). There's a wide array of tapas of all sorts - seafood, meat, veggies - there's really something for almost everyone. We opted for the skipjack on a pistachio cracker with sour cream, the duck with sweet potato and guava, and the peppers stuffed with goat cheese and mussles. Everything was incredibly delicious and the flavor pairings were unique in comparison to some of the tapas we had previously eaten. The peppers were rather small, but were very tasty - they came stuffed with a small amout of goat cheese and roasted in a seafood broth that was rich, complex and savory. Though I thought they would also be stuffed in the peppers, the mussles were already de-shelled and nestled within the broth. They were cooked perfectly - soft, velvety, salty goodness. The duck was my second favorite dish of the afternoon and seemed to be a bit of a play on the traditional duck and cherry combination. The duck was seared and served medium rare - perfectly cooked and glistening. It was surrounded by a combination of roasted sweet potato cubes and crispier sweet potato chips and the dish was dotted with several rounds of guava foam. Seriously an amazing combination. I was a little bit nervous at first about the tropical influence of the guava, however its fruity tartness combined with the sweet, earthy sweet potato and salty duck was amazing. Also, as it was a foam, it was light, airy and flavorful without being overpowering. By far my favorite (we actually ended up ordering it twice!) was the skipjack. This is a pretty generous chunck of raw fish served atop a pistachio cracker with a small sliver of jamon (i believe), sour cream, micro greens and what seemed to be something like a soy sauce reduction. Admittedly, though I enjoy sushi, I am still a little hesitant around raw fish as I've had a couple of negative experiences with carpaccio and ceviche. However, all of those fears were completely allayed after the first bite - seriously, it's difficult to even tell it's raw it's so sweet, tender and delicious - and that's just the fish itself! Add to that an absolutely brilliant combination of crunchy pistachios, creamy sour cream and just a hint of saltiness from the jamon and soy sauce, and you've got what might be the perfect bite or two. Overall, this has been my favorite place to eat in Barcelona thus far - the atmosphere is lively and welcoming, the food is creative, unique and most of all, absolutely delicious, and the wine and beer is (from what I could tell) local and reasonably priced. I am definitely hoping for a return trip during our last couple of days here to try some more of their tapas and perhaps their paella as well! read more
