Somerset at the Viceroy is a chic upper class restaurant with a nautical theme in the interior stretching over two levels. We set at the back of the lower level which was reasonably quiet even on a Saturday eve offers a view into the open kitchen area. The service is superb with a felt million of people taking care of all your individual needs without ever being confusing. Our waitress was extremely helpful in suggesting vegan modifications to the cauliflower steak for my partner which we came particularly to try for. It was indeed a wonderfully inventive dish, and the roasted mushrooms as side were some of the best we ever tried with zero excess in neither water nor oil. The brioche toast gave the beef tartare a lovely sweet twist while the duck fettuccini were cooked to perfection both for the ragu as well as the pasta. But ultimately, we left being entirely spellbound by the chocolate layer cake with coffee ice cream which wasn't just a masterful piece of art on the plate to lived up to it in terms of taste & textures in every possible way. read more

I wanted to like this place because the menu looks soooo good! But the chef could not get it right. We ordered the crispy rice with crab on top, sea bass, lobster spring rolls, and duck. All dishes were lackluster and not fresh. The crispy rice with crab had too much mayonnaise and the crab tasted like imitation crab. It has potential but missed the mark The duck could've been good if they didn't soak it in jerk sauce. It made it too salty The sea bass was AWFUL worst sea bass I've ever had. No flavor, wasn't flakey and was beat down making the fish extra flat. Horrible Lobster spring rolls was the best thing we ordered and it wasn't all that. Staff was really nice and friendly and I liked the ambiance but I would never go back read more

I had the mussels, calamari and branzino. The food was pretty good especially the branzino. Drinks were good and our server was very attentive. Overall the restaurant was beautiful with high lofty ceilings and spacious seating. I think the food is a little overpriced but overall I had a good experience. read more

Wonderful! Very high quality ingredients. Dishes were carefully prepared and highly enjoyable. The only reason why I am giving this restaurant 4 stars is because I think they can add a wider variety of foods. I had eaten here for breakfast with my parents and the brunch menu was fairly limited to foods for those with a more refined palate, which was perfectly great for my parents and I, but if we had brought my two teenage brothers then I think we may have gotten up and left because it is not the kind of place where you can order a western omelette, if that makes sense. However, rest assured as soon as one tries the french toast, they will find themselves in a state of astonishment by the magnificent taste. read more

I lived around the corner over a decade ago and haven't been back until I had a lunch date here. Truth be told, I don't get to Gold Coast much anymore-I have no real reason to be in that area (I live on the Far North Side and go to school in the Loop). The waitress was friendly and attentive. She offered great explanations when we had questions. Food was good. I forget the name of it, but I had some sort of burger that tasted great. This place felt very classy yet relaxed. If there was a restaurant version of "business casual" this place would be it. Not boring, not stuffy, but an accessible level of refinement. I highly recommend going to this place. read more

I ordered a burger medium and it came out 20 minutes later completely rare. After another 15 minutes, they brought me a new one (minus the fries since apparently we got them the first time). Still charged us for the burger read more

We live in the neighborhood and love coming to Somerset for both brunch and dinner. The service is outstanding and the food is just delicious. We've tried almost everything on the menu and they are all fantastic. Fun rooftop bar upstairs too. Enjoy! read more

Would rate 0 if I could. Absolutely worst experience ever here. My family had our first round here and were cut off. The male bartender with red hair and glasses not only discriminated against us but embarrassed everyone. For my first round, he made me reword my request of "can I have a Moscow mule?" to "May I have a Moscow mule?" After that he decided to treat everyone poorly. He said he'd make our drinks in 10 minutes and we questioned him if we were cut off which was surprising to us because we hadn't drank before. We come back all the time and will never be back again. Don't come here if you don't want to be discriminated against. read more

Wow! The brunch was phenomenal! I got the French toast and chicken. So delish!!! My husband got the hash. Great, but not as good as the check and French toast...the pineapple punch was so darn good. It's Supposed to be for 4-6 people, the split it between the two of us and we handled it fine. ‍ you have to try this place!!! read more

Very poor service. I and my daughter were the guests of the Viceory Hotel, the neighbor and the owner of Somerset. We went there for dinner and didn't make the reservation. The Wrong prices (staff will not change the price unless you show them their own menu). read more

I was really impressed by our time spent here. Going into it assuming it would be a solid, but not super memorable meal - My expectations were exceeded. Great food, atmosphere, and service. Food wise I tried the fried chicken sandwich and it was amazing. Not overly greasy/unhealthy feeling (understanding it is still fried chicken), it was just right. The burger on the other hand was a juicy mess of goodness. A great burger, in a saturated Chicago burger scene. Some other items I tried were the French toast, hashbrowns, breakfast sandwich, and some pastry items. Skip the pastries I would say, even though they were good. Go with the French toast if you want a sweet, we loved that. The breakfast sandwich was good but hard to mess that up. Someone I was with had the kale salad and said it was amazing, even though I didn't actually try it myself. Service here was perfect. They pay attention to detail, make sure not to interrupt conversation, speak well about the menu, and have a very friendly tone. I was here for lunch but dinner is high on my list. Cant say enough positives things about this place. read more

Cute place, great outdoor seating. Service was just ok. My iced latte and the gooey butter cake were good. I loved the veggie scramble, it was different with the summer squash in it and I loved the potatoes. The menu is kinda pricey. read more

I LOVE Somerset! First, the interior design is so beautiful. Second, the staff was so friendly! I was waiting for my friend, but I had a reservation so they took me to my table to allow me to wait for her. Third, and arguably most important.. the food is amazing. This place has birthed the beginning of my love for brioche French toast. Will definitely come back and will definitely bring more people with me! read more

I really enjoyed my visit to Somerset! I met a friend here for brunch. The atmosphere and interior is STUNNING. The service at Somerset was out of this world. I enjoyed my food, but the cinnamon roll wasn't warm (but still tasted great!) and I couldn't believe that one single mimosa was $15! I will be going back to Somerset. read more

I took my family to the Somerset to celebrate my daughter's college graduation. The ambiance and food were perfect for our celebration. However, the service was atrocious and definitely not up to par for the price we paid for our meal. With so many good restaurants in the area, I would definitely choose a different location for our next meal out. read more

Very delicious octopus from appetizers and squid ink pasta is amazing! On the downside, staff lacks trainings and is not quite sure what to do with customers. We waited 20 min next to empty patio because two hostesses couldn't figure out which waiter to ask to seat us. Very disappointing service from personnel while food is bomb! read more

I can't stop talking about how good the food is! This was my second visit and I was celebrating my birthday. Though I was disappointed we couldn't sit upstairs this time due to a private party the food was so good I quickly got over it. My scallops were amazing, as was my boyfriend's short ribs. I also highly recommend the kale & brussel sprouts salad, which might sound boring but was one of my most favorite salads, and a portion of the proceeds are donated to the Chicago Greater Food Depository. The crispy brussel sprouts side was also so yummy but definitely rich. My dirty martini was perfect and although pricey was well worth it (and I mean my blue cheese olives got their own glass over ice)! Can't wait to comeback again. read more

I met a client here for lunch and had a wonderful experience. We sat outside and enjoyed beautiful weather, great food, and a fantastic staff. Food: I got the Gem and Broccoli Salad with chicken and I can honestly say it was one of the best salads I have ever had. I am already planning when I can come back for the salad again. Environment: - great music - beautiful inside and out - comfortable seating Staff: - friendly and attentive team read more

One of the best dining experiences of my life. Came here with a large group of 10 for a celebratory dinner. We were promptly seated and welcomed by the nicest waitress sara. She carefully explain the menu, as well as paid close attention to many members of the party's dietary restrictions. The ambience of the restaurant is lovely was beautiful, art deco, golden green, paint, high ceilings, and look huge chandeliers. Appetizers and drinks: I had the Miami viceroy which was summery with a spicy kick. Loved it. For appetizers we had the bread service which came with delicious cheeses and butters. The strawberry burrata was perfect for Memorial Day weekend. We ordered a round of many of the shareable vegetables, including the sun choke, and the crispy brussels sprouts with her perfectly seasoned and crispy. Dinner: I had the crispy branzino which was one of the best cooked branzinos knows I've ever had. The fish itself was buttery, slightly sweet and very delicate on a bed of perfectly cooked broccolini. It was covered in this crispy Phylo balanced the butteriness of the fish. I did think the vegetables were a little bit too saucy, but overall would highly recommend again. Everyone in the group seem to enjoy their entrées. We were too full for dessert, but our lovely waitress. Sara brought out a round of Prosecco and a complementary cake for our celebration. Service: the service was truly won the best I've ever had. Sarah was so attentive to everyone's dietary restrictions and was very enthusiastic about our celebration. Sarah deserves a raise!! read more

I have been wanting to come here for some time to actually have a meal. I always bring visitors to the Devereux upstairs but never dined in the restaurant. Yesterday was a perfect introduction. Quiet and intimate on a Monday evening. Beautifully decorated and loved the seating with the plush velvet booths. They serve these warm little squares of bread that are slightly sweet and crispy on the outside. Perfect to enjoy while surveying the menu. We started with the Beet tartar. This dish plays on your senses. Vegetarian with a Smokey flavor and the sharpness of a goat Gouda served with a unique seeded flat bread and these little pastry puff pita wedges. We split the Wood Grilled branzino with couscous and Brussels sprouts. It's nice because that dish is meant to share! The fish was incredibly flavored and topped with watercress and an olive tapenade. We ordered the perfect amount of food although next time I would like to try some other individual dishes. They place is certainly a treat and can't wait to revisit! read more

thought I'd ended up missing the fun aspect of what the Cedar Hotel was, but the food and service were impeccable. Unbelievably horrible service. We were seated upstairs and neglected by our server. I've never spent so much time just waiting for a waiter to come and take our order. He definitely didn't want to be there or serve us. And just FYI, the restaurants are at limited capacity due to covid, so it wasn't busy at all! When I asked about the lunch menu and a specific item (shakshouka) he said it was never an item there before. Meanwhile I've had it before there and there are so many pictures of that item on Yelp and google for this restaurant. He kept telling me the lunch menu was working for him (via QR code) but it wasn't working for us, and he never bothered to help us get it. I ultimately had to order from the brunch menu. My burger bun was Burnt (and I mean burnt!). Burger itself was fine tho. Didn't feel like complaining because I didn't want to be there any longer than I had to at this point. Just wanted to leave. I won't be returning. So many places in Chicago. I did give my feedback as I was leaving to the hostess (who I think was the manager too). read more

Within an hour of landing, checking into Viceroy, I scored two seats at the bar for brunch. We were brought upstairs but wayyyy too loud. The bar was perfect, or so it seemed. The place is modern and pretty. The menu inspiring. There were a few bartenders and a few bar backs, so about, 6 people running behind the bar. Despite all the bodies, service sucked. We had to ask for everything and a few times. SO annoying. Food was ok, not wow. Despite being hungry, we left some food behind. Meager portion of salmon on the bagel, the pastry, rather dry and my omelette had little filling. I did like the potatoes. Not much to rave about in a city with amazing dining choices. read more

Good food. Great decor and vibes. Definitely a good place for brunch. Decent pricing for Gold Coast too

What a change from the Cedar Hotel where we used to go for cheap beer in the 90s! The decor is dramatic, yet inviting and manages to have a fun vibe despite the organized chaos in the background. Our server, Suzanne was super attentive and friendly. I haven't had venison much in Chicago so I was excited to see it on the menu, and it was delicious. I'll definitely be back to try more from this menu... read more

Well maybe this restaurant just wasn't for me. I thought the food was just okay. The quality of food was good. Atmosphere was good but I didn't get the wow factor. No flavor. Very bland. I didn't scream YESSSSS!!!! It's was more like.. ok, I ate. Again. Maybe I'm more of a diner and dive kinda girl but even the most expensive restaurants I've dined with have impeccable flavor and some sort of specialty that draws you in. I was merely sold by the nice patio. This place may be great if you're looking for simplicity. I want my food to drive my tastebuds to magic land. I'm not trying to discourage eating here. I'm just saying it wasn't for me. read more

I was impressed with the menu and cooking on a recent dinner visit to Somerset. The Rush Street vibe is not my thing, but I mostly enjoyed this first visit. 4* for food, 2* for ambiance. VIBE: Noisy, a bit hectic, not especially warm. We dined indoors - a cavernous contemporary space that felt just a bit crowded. SERVICE: There were plenty of staff to attend to the crowd. Service was briskly attentive. Food was delivered efficiently. VERY GOOD: A kale/brussels sprouts salad with roasted grapes made for a nice start. I had the best sturgeon I've ever tasted - a special, fresh, cooked perfectly, beautifully plated. My companion's squid ink seafood chitarra was also superb - tender shrimp, lobster and calamari in a flavorful sauce - and the small portion was an ample entrée. We had what was billed as a salted caramel cake dessert; it was nicely composed, but was more like a spice cake with caramel accents. NOT AS GOOD: Wines by the glass were skimpy pours, as was an alleged double espresso. I didn't care much for the ambiance, but the food was very good. I might return if I were in the neighborhood. read more

Somerset - Awesome food and lovely ambience! The beet tartare is so good! - American Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

Not impressed. I ordered the "grilled lacquered duck breast" at $39. That's just for four finger-sized slices of bloody meat wrapped in "Duck fat" that was chewy and rubbery in some parts. It needed to be seared. Menu said it had hazelnuts and Fuji apple slices but it was a mere three slivers of Fuji apple and half a teaspoon of minuscule pieces of nuts. I searched on my plate for the turnips and discovered a one-inch circle of white paste under the frisée. Aha! There it was! Frisée was included but that's a garnishment not sustenance. The glaze or "lacquer" was a thin brown sauce, void of flavor and some sort of sugar to qualify it as a glaze. I ate the $14 cod fritters and the insides were extremely runny in the middle. The oil must have been too hot as the outsides were super crispy. The $15 Beet salad was missing dressing. The $15 ricotta dumplings were blasé and needed more than the skimpy crumbs of pecorino. As I don't want to appear a completely negative Nellie, I will say that the $12 crispy brussels sprouts were fried perfectly and were outstanding. These alone made my review go up one star. I conclude that all these five star reviews are made by people with lower standards lubricated on the $15 cocktails or some are fictitious. Such as "well worth the price." read more
