I am thankful I stumbled upon SOHO on Google and met John. Reading other reviews of SOHO, I feel that I am with like minded people as far as the services we've received. I spilled a glorious amount of cold water on my Macbook Air. Didn't do anything about it for weeks because I had just given birth and couldn't stay awake enough to go anywhere. First contacted NTech and they ghosted. Then chanced it on Google and found myself at SOHO's door. John listened patiently and gave me some options. He was so nice that I didn't feel intimidated about telling him that I would mull it over. By the time I left SOHO, I had a good idea as to how much I would need to spend. I just had to decide whether to go for a complete fix, get it refurbished, or do nothing. Again, a few weeks post-partum, totally forgetful and had to get situated every so often ('where am i?'), so I appreciated that my initial visit granted me so much clarity on the wayahead. I ultimately followed John's recommendation to get a refurbished computer, and I left his shop with an even better computer than what I left in his care. One month later, I'm totally loving my Macbook Air (always loved it, but even more so). I am so glad I found SOHO. In as much I hope to not encounter computer troubles, if I should, I would reach out to John first. The guy has a great character, is kind, and won't cheat you out. So glad I found this place! These reviews are legit, and Soho has the business model for others in this industry to emulate. Backstory: My 2 year old knocked over our 2015 Macbook Pro resulting in a damaged screen that was unusable. Contacted a competitor first who quoted me around $800+ to replace the screen. Ridiculous! At that price point I was just going to do it myself....... While shopping around for replacement screens, I sent John over at SOHO a bid request over Yelp based on the reviews. Not only was he prompt and courteous, his price was $300 bucks cheaper than his competitors, and slightly more than the price for a replacement screen for me to do the job myself. I contacted him on Yelp and asked for a quote to repair my bf's Late 2018 MacBook Air Pro Screen and he said $520, way cheaper than the offers that we got from Best Buy and Apple Store! We went today to replace the screen and he got it done in less than 2 hours and he was very nice. It's been about 5 and a half years since my last visit to John at SOHO Computer Repair. Since then, I have purchased a new laptop (a 2017 Razer Blade 14) which I have been using for 3 years. Near the end of 2019, I started to notice that there was a slight bulge pushing under the mouse trackpad. So I opened the laptop and found that the internal battery had expanded which was a common issue for my Razer model after some research. After observing that there hasn't been any major damage to the laptop (since I was still able to use it, I know, risky on my part), I continued to use it until the laptop froze and randomly shut off one day during use. No matter if I charged it or waited a few hours for the laptop to rest, it would not load past the logo screen. So in a panic of possibly losing my files or having something become corrupt, I contacted John. Even after 5+ years, John still remembered who I was (the nail filer case). After some briefing and catching up, I took my laptop to John and he was able to diagnose my laptop and extract my files within 1-2 days (since I didn't have a lot of files, but some were important) onto a personal external harddrive that I brought in. Later, he found that the graphics card had crapped out and since it was soldered onto the motherboard (as most laptops do nowadays), the whole piece would need to be replaced. Unfortunate thing for me is that I decided to buy a high-end laptop so naturally the cost of fixing it would come at a premium. While I could very much have gotten a new laptop, I cherished the laptop very much for its design and its hardware was still considered competitive to any new laptop that is for sale at the time. John was incredibly helpful in going out of his way to both look for a replacement part and contact Razer to research the cheapest and best option for me. Knowing how bad Razer's customer support is, we opted to just buy the parts and have it ship it as it would be faster. It took only about a week to wait for the replacement parts and John immediately fixed the laptop on the day the parts arrived and was ready for pick up later that day. SUMMARY: I would happily recommend John to anyone to help service and troubleshoot their computers. He is an efficient, friendly, and honest computer repair guy that really cares for his clients and does his best to offer the best solution so that you don't end up breaking the bank. Three years later and John's still the same, honest dude I met when he was on Kona St. I have returned again, but this time for a cracked screen on my Toshiba laptop. I walked in at around 1:30pm on a Saturday. John took a look, quoted me $170, and offered to have it done before he closed- I wasn't able to pick it up until Monday since I had my kid's soccer game to go to and he's closed Sundays. He took down my number and informed me he'd call me with an update on my computer screen. He called about 2 hours later to let me know the screen replacement has a couple minor scratches that aren't noticeable when it's on and may have gotten knocked around in shipping. Because of this, he discounted the screen replacement to $140. Monday afternoon came and I went to pick up my computer. John showed me the scratches and honestly, it's so minor that I probably wouldn't have even noticed (but I have bad eyes too). I just seriously appreciate the honesty and the consideration John has to get things fixed for his customers in a timely manner. Plus, he's really good at what he does! Long overdue review. What can I say, John provides a great service and very easy to work with. I've had 2 of my computers repaired here (macbook and mac mini about a year apart). The turn around time was more than reasonable. I'm surprised that he's a one man show! He seems to have a lot of business (and I can see why) but I never feel rushed when we talk about my computer issues. His prices are fair, and I think lower than other places. Initially found Soho Computer Repair -- and it's owner John -- here on Yelp. Great reviews. I called him, explained my issue and he was professional, understood my problem, gave me an estimated cost to repair and the best days to bring in my computer. A few days later, during a casual conversation with some long-time friends, they told me they were loyal customers of John's/Soho and he's the best. Well here I am with my issue fully resolved and it's true, he's the best. I'm pretty computer savvy but this issue was outside my wheelhouse and John was clear in explaining what he did and offered some great suggestions that I will utilize from this point forward. He works alone mostly, so you are paying a very fair price. He also doesn't treat you like an idiot. He's polite to the point where I didn't know he sold SSDs even though I needed one because he didn't want to appear pushy. As soon as I found out, I returned the one I bought and bought one from him -- at an incredibly reasonable price. In this day and age with technology literally leaving us in the dust, a guy like John is a fantastic person to have on your side. One thing he was pretty specific about though, he is more of a hardware than a software guy, and he freely admits as much. I am a tech-deficient grandpa who was so impressed with John at SOHO Computer that I am inspired to write my first Yelp review. John, a one man show, is personable, knowledgeable, and keeps his promises. I have a vintage Mac Book Pro that was slowed to a crawl by viruses, pop-ups and 9 years worth of who knows what else. Despite my wife's pleas (nags?) to buy a new machine that I would have to learn about all over again I thought I'd try a Hail Mary to get it back up to functional status. John checked it out at lunchtime Tuesday, promised it would be ready within 24 hours - whadda know? it WAS! He cleaned it up, got rid of a lot of unneeded junk, upgraded the operating system and now it seems to work almost like new for a very reasonable price, the same price he quoted at the start! My computer was fixed over a year ago, and after downloading a huge software I had to come on Yelp and thank these beautiful people! They were kind, fast, HONEST, and above all...good people. No offense to big cooperations like apple and stuff but they quoted me ridiculous amounts just because they didn't want to fix it. John was DA BOMB! I thought I had already wrote a review for John, but nope! So here goes. Problem: My computer was not emitting any sound. Restarted, then, computer screen tells me that the AVG cables aren't hooked up. Double-check that, and the cables are definitely screwed into the back of the screen and the tower, so they should work. Double-checked the functionality of the AVG cable by connecting my monitor to my laptop, and the cable works! I then tested the audio wires by plugging that into my laptop...sound comes through on my monitor, but I get no sound when I plug the audio wires back into the tower, so the audio wires are in working order. It's something to do with the HP Pavillion (2008) tower, right? Thanks to my Android and wireless internet, I was able to troubleshoot further and found that my graphics card could be bad. So, I needed a second advice, and turned to Yelp. Mahalo nui to Yelp and finding Soho Computer Repair. This business was by far number 1, with so many many high ratings and reviews. I was leery at first, since I didn't know where the place was. But, thanks to whoever posted pictures of the whereabouts of this place, I was able to make my way to John's Soho Computer Repair place with my tower in hand. John was super friendly, and really really honest. I explained my problem to John, and he and I both agreed that it was either a graphics card problem or a very old computer. He assured me that everything was going to be taken care of. Everyone is assessed a $75 fee for John's troubleshooting. I call it the "Consulting Fee." It's very affordable compared to other places that charge $100 and up. What's really cool is that he knows what he's doing. If there's nothing he can do to fix the problem, then it's only $75. Very convenient place to repair or upgrade your computer. We took there our 2013 MacBook Pro. We were almost secure about the fact that the computer was not adjustable but instead he come back as new. Moreover the owner suggested us to change some part inside so that the computer was ready to run fast, well and upgrade as a 2019 model. This is a hidden gem located on the second floor in a small two story building located across Safeway on South Beretania. I took in my computer that was experiencing a blue screen of death and John the owner was extremely patient and knowledgeable in addressing the possible causes. Before leaving, he provided an invoice with the fixes that were to be done; either fix the blue screen error on Windows 10 or reformat it back to Windows 8.1. John kept me notified on the status of my laptop the entire time under his care and made sure to get my approval before reformatting the laptop back to Windows 8.1 over the phone. His prices are reasonable and you will receive a non-tax cost if paying in cash. For my reformat it costed $150 in cash and I now have a fresh clean computer free of any type of viruses or pesky errors. Highly recommended! read more

The Best! John is great. So professional, I spilt coffee on my MacBook air and I tried to blow dry it on a cool setting, it helped for like 2 days and then wouldn't start up again. About a month later I brought it to Soho computer repairs where I met John. He listened to what happened and very simply told me what was probably going on with my comp and what needed to be fixed, gave me prices and options and I got my computer back like nothing happened!! I agree with Val Y...everyone needs a John! John is hands down the nicest computer guy I've ever met! He speaks actual human English to me when explaining why my computer died. True story: It always comes back to your mother(board). After several tries with replacing my power supply and my video card and getting spotty results John discovered that the problem was s few of my converters/connector/thingamabobs were basically melted because of the unsteady flow of electrical current (from my broken power supply.) He recommended that instead of replacing my motherboard, power supply, and video card that I simply think about buying a brand new PC and just transferring my data off my old hard drive (which is completely intact.) Let's think about this for a minute... John is so nice that instead of telling me to replace the old parts and charging me a small fortune (easily $400+ w/ parts & labor) he recommends that I go buy a new computer from some other store. He's giving away his own profit here! And because he didn't actually fix anything on my PC he just charged me for the diagnostic ($40) and said that fee would apply as credit if I decide to buy and new PC and have him transfer the data off the old drive (that he took out for FREE and gave me.) Bottom line: Nicest Computer Guy EVER. Boom. And I will be taking my new PC to John as soon as it comes off the boat! read more

Nerd alert! Nerd alert! Nerd alert! We all have times in our lives when we need some "technical assistance." I had to transfer data from a PC hard drive to my Mac drive and it was a time sensitive matter. I called Super Geeks which is right down the street from my house and the voice on the other end of the line informed me it would take five days to do the transfer. It would cost $199. The price wasn't a big deal but five days just wasn't going to work. Thankfully I found a Yelp review about Soho Computer Repair written by Lindsay A. I called them to see what the wait time would be for my computer. Not only were they cheaper at $99, but they were able to do the data transfer by the next day. Sweet! I walked into their shop located a few doors down from Ailana Shave Ice. They're offices are not pimped out fancy, but it didn't really matter to me because they were really nice guys! He took my hard drives, found out what I needed to get done, and told me it would be finished by the next day. They called me at noon the next day to tell me everything was done and that I could pick up my hard drives. Fast service, reliable, reasonably priced and friendly. What more could one ask for! John from SOHO swapped my hard drive to SSD added RAM, and explained the some computer mistakes I was making when I tried to do the job myself with the wrong case size.. Very good work, completed the job in 30 minutes. Everything works great. I highly recommend him. Parking is easy to find on Beretania st. and there's also a few guest stalls left on Beretania up a small incline at his shop. Prices were reasonable, $75 diagnostic and he only charged $30 to install the drive I had prepared with a new 2.5 to 3.5 case. I was there 2 days ago reading a good review from yelp so I thought I should go there get it fixed after I told him what the problem was and he said he will take a look at it and he told me the base diagnostic fee of 75 dollars. After 2 days I thought I call and see how things are and he was telling me he was kinda stuck at what the issue was but he professionally handled and told me he will try another method. At the same day after few hours he told me it's fixed good to go pick up. This place was great! Was going to Super Geeks cuz the storm fried my computer, but on the search, this enticed me with rave reviews from Yelp. Wow, thanks!! John was really nice, and helped me 100%, saving me money, and promised one day service. He kept his word. Was so great, I dropped another computer off as I picked mine up, all cleaned and dusted. Cost was only $75. My other computer wasn't as lucky. Looks like I'll have to go back to recovery disks on that one, but the good news is it only cost me $29 for diagnostics, and sounded like he went through a lot to come to this conclusion and diagnosis. I will save myself $145 to restore my computer by having my son do the job, but even if I didn't have such a talented son, I think $145 is a pretty good deal! As far as "computer doctors" go, I would trust this one, and will definitely call again if I ever need to take my computer to the doctor's again! Gonna tell all my friends about it. By the way, when I mentioned "Super Geeks" to my son, he rolled his eyes, and said he never had any good experiences with them, were always "fuzzy" when it came to diagnostics, and then says "we'll call you in 2-3 weeks..."
