I had emailed john back in july asking for help with my laptop that wouldn't turn on :( one of those things where its fine one day, then the next....nope! he responded promptly and told me to bring it in and he could look at it. his new location is great! super close to my house so its very convenient to run back and forth. when I brought in my laptop he confirmed what google had told me was wrong: dead motherboard. he gave me 2 options, 1. he could find new one and install, or 2. I could buy a brand new laptop for probably the same price it would cost him for a new motherboard plus labor. I told him I didn't have the money at the moment but I would prob buy a new laptop! he said when I get it to bring it in and he can transfer the data from my old hard drive to my new one! so now 3 months later I finally got around to emailing him back and told him I got my new laptop and if I could bring it in so he could transfer the data. again he responded promply, and told me to bring it by. I asked him what he needed so it was all ready to go when i dropped it off. this was on Saturday (10/03) i dropped it off around 11:30 i believe. he gave a quote for the transfer (starts at $55, and most people are usually around $70-$100) he said that it would most likely be ready on Monday since hes not open sunday. i get home and about a half hour to an hour later i get a call from him saying its all done!! NICE!! i called him back and said i was omw to pick it up. the total was about $75, and i got all my pictures, music, and documents!! my life feels complete again. lol. john is awesome and i would recommend him to anyone. his prices seem fair and he knows what hes talking about/what hes doing. read more

Both times he was transparent and honest as far as prices and his services. He is genuine and professional. Came here shortly after discovering my laptop with physical damage that affected the screen of my laptop. My laptop suffered from a crack somewhere between the open/close hinge and the laptop housing. It affected the way my opened and closed, and I avoided using the computer while trying to prevent the crack from getting worse. After a failed experience with Best Buy's Geek Squad (more on that later) I came across John at Soho Computer Repair. He was very professional in presenting to me all of the possible options: 1) Replace the housing of the laptop (the most expensive fix; upwards to a few hundred dollars) 2) Attempt to fix the crack (risky, less effective fix) and at last, 3) Replace my laptop. I was reluctant on spending a great of money for repairs on a laptop that cost me only $875, so I went with option #2. We chose the option that worked the best for me, rather than one that would have been the most profitable from him. What surprised me about this business was the professionalism and helpfulness. With John, I was able to understand the issue in everyday terms, while weighing every available decision. Through his consultation, I knew exactly what to expect from his service from the moment I left that store. Two days later, and I get a call from Soho computers asking to pick up my computer. The operation was successful, and I should expect to use my laptop regularly.. Overall, I am happy with the quick repairs, helpful service, and the friendly atmosphere of this business. Brought my macbook in today because a usb hub wasn't working. Customer service was exceptional and John told the truth as it is, that it wasn't really worth it to fix the usb port since macbooks required soldering. He could have easily made money off of me by replacing the motherboard. Honest, and great customer service. Found this place after my 27" iMac's hard drive crashed and I didn't want to bother taking it apart myself. John was great; called him on a Saturday and was able to drop off my computer the same day to him. He ordered the drive off of amazon w/ me standing there so I could choose what I wanted and told me it would be ready in about a week depending on how long shipping took. It was ready in 8 days; cost was $200 bucks plus cost of parts so very reasonable. I was able to upgrade from 3 TB standard drive included w/ the mac to a 5TB enterprise drive with a better reliability and it works like normal. Had one minor issue with the fans running high after I got it home and reloaded all of my software (about 250GB worth). Gave John a call and he walked me through a couple of steps to reset some settings and it was back to normal. Would highly recommend this place...kind of hard to find; located in an office building on the 2nd floor. Park in the underground parking, he has 2 reserved spots. Give him a call and he can give you directions on how to get upstairs easily. After reading yelp's good reviews about this place, I decided to call and ask for a quote to diagnose my PC. I've managed to narrow down the faulty PC part to either the motherboard or the CPU. After explaining the situation to SOHO, I get a response: "yeah we don't have the tools to diagnose either component, so...you may want to call around." This is somewhat confusing, as a mobo failure is a pretty common part to fail in a desktop PC, and it was a little disappointing that a Computer repair shop, which advertises in Desktop repair, cannot figure out whether a motherboard or CPU is faulty. Three stars to being honest about it and not wasting any time/money. read more

About a month ago I noticed that my DELL XPS wasn't reading my charger. At first I thought my charger broke (I have a toddler so a lot of things are breaking). So I ordered a new one and that one still wasn't working! It wasn't until I realized the charger port was messed up. Thankfully I was able to have John assist with my computer. We both agreed my charger port needed to be changed. While I was at it, I requested to go ahead and have my computer cleaned up since it has been slow. His services and professionalism were worth every dollar! Unfortunately after several tries, my laptop will need to be connected with the charger at all times in order for it to work but he did anything and everything to fix it. The model of my laptop has this common problem come to find out and may very well be a quality issue. He called me with an update every time he worked on my computer; but after changing the battery and charger it didn't make a difference . He did inform me I could change the motherboard but I would most likely be back in a year or so for the same problem. So I took his advice to save the money I was going to use to buy the motherboard to buy the other things my son broke. So my iMac decided to die on me right when I really needed it the most. Figures right? Law of averages and all that stuff! Well I just fired up good ol Yelp for Mac repair and boom! Soho Computer Repair. #1 on the list! So I shoot them a message for a cost quote and John gets back to me within the hour! Cheeewhooo! Within the hour? Ridiculous! So I get my quote and make arrangements to bring my machine in. I wouldn't say there's tons of parking, but there's a small parking lot in the building and on street parking. So parking is good. So I needed to get my lap top screen fixed and was looking around for a repair shop near my house. I remembered seeing his shop a while back after having ate at sushi San which is a deal for a 1.00 a plate for sushi. You can read my review on them on my yelp page. I waited out side the door before he opined and he poitley asked me if I was wanting to come in. So when he opened the door I walked in and told him what was wrong. I brought my laptop in after my son accidentally closed it on our mouse and broke the screen. I was in complete panic mode due to the fact that I needed the computer for a business trip the next day.
