My laptop (all of a sudden) was unable to identify additional monitors when I plugged in my dock at home even though it was working fine for months. After troubleshooting for several hours on my own, it appeared that the video card was an issue. Or was it...? I had no clue because I'm only good at killing laptops with my touch of death. Between Best Buy's Geek Squad and local repair shops, I prefer the local shops if the prices are reasonable and they have good reviews. SoHo Computer Repair met both criteria. After I sent a request for a quote and appointment on Yelp, I received a reply from John within the hour. When I took the laptop into the shop, John tested my laptop by plugging in one of his monitors and my laptop was able to extend/duplicate the screen again. Found SOHO on Yelp and was very impressed by the extremely positive reviews. Honesty was what really caught my eye and so I texted them before they were even open, and got an immediate response from John. He told me that he would be in today and to just bring my computer in. I did, and he said that he would take a look right away. Well, we dropped off the computer and in a little over an hour, John called me back to tell me what he found. He said that he had the replacement part and could be finished pretty quick. I was surprised and ecstatic that the diagnosis and repair could be done so quickly. I chose to take my older PC to Soho because the reviews were so positive. But, reviews can be unreliable. My hard drive was defective, and I couldn't even run diagnostics. My biggest fear was losing all my data. I called John about my problem, and he said to bring it in to see if the hard drive is damaged and if the data can be recovered. Although he was very busy, he looked at it and called me the next day. He could not access the hard drive and could replace it with a new hard drive. Sadly, for data retrieval, I needed to send it away, with no guarantees, and it would be costly. So he changed my damaged hard drive, upgraded the SATA to SSD, suggested regular backups to an external drive, installed Windows 10 and a free antivirus program, answered my other questions, and charged $320 (which I felt was fair). He also genuinely offered to answer any questions in the future. All in all, it was a nice experience, even though I wasn't able to restore everything to what it was. Oh well, it is what it is. My son's laptop was making a very loud sound and i suspected a problem with the fan on the device. I took a video of the issue and sent a message to Joh who literally responded in minutes confirming it was a fan issue based on what I had sent him which was well after his normal hours of operation. I brought the device down the next day with no expectation and even asked John if it was worth repairing as we had already sourced a replacement device. He said he would take it apart to identify the issue with the fan and call me with a quote. I told him to take his time as it was no longer an urgent matter. Well, working at the speed of John, I got a call back in a couple of hours later letting me know that the fan was not only still operable but that he identified the root cause and thought he could fix the issue rather than replacing the fan which would have cost me 3 x times as much as the repair he did. After our call, I got a message from him that the device was ready to pick up! He also said if the issue escalated into something bigger, I could bring the device back and he would apply what I already paid as credit toward a more major repair/replacement if needed! My external hard drive would not boot up. Spoke with John and he said to bring it in and he would take a look. He left it tied to his computer overnight to try to get it to boot up with no luck. He let me know he wasn't able to help me and to come by and pick up my hard drive. He took the time to give me a couple of pamphlets from mainland companies that he thought could retrieve my pictures and files. I offered to pay him for his time but he refused. He also answered a question for me regarding a laptop that is giving me problems. I was given this companies name by a 'Geek Squad' staff member of the Pearl City Best Buy because he advised us that Best Buy could not repair my Aunt's computer (the exact one that we bought from them that was just over 3 years old) as they (wherever and whomever they shipped my Aunt's computer off to on the Continental US) stated that they could not get it started either (the problem with my Aunt's computer was that about 2 years after she purchased it, it began to process and move extremely slow like it was being bogged down and then it eventually just could not even turn on after returning from one of our lengthy trips). It was then recommended that we purchase a completely new computer! As a side note, the staff member gave us the name and number to SOHO Computer repair because, as he personally stated, that 'it probably only need a mother board' and SOHO should be able to do that for us! Needless to say, on Saturday, July 1st, I contacted SOHO and John answered my call promptly and with a very professional greeting. I explained to him what was explained to us by the Geek Squad employee and was wondering if he could look at, assess and hopefully, fix my Aunt's computer! He said he would give it a look and that I could bring it to him the next day, which was a Saturday, and he would look at it! He also stated that there was a diagnostics charge but should we move forward with him repairing the computer the diagnostics charge would be included with the final bill. John was amazingly fast because he called us back on Monday, July 3rd, and advised us that he too could not get the computer to boot up, thus, he wanted to move forward with ordering a mother board and, at this time, advised us that, should we want to, upgrade the speed of the computer from a Hard Disk Drive (or HDD), as it was currently running on, to a Solid State Drive (or SSD) he could also do that at the same time. Anyway, my Aunt decided to go with his recommendations and had him order the mother board and the SSD where he stated that it should take about a week for the parts to come in and once he gets the computer started would be able to further diagnose my Aunt's computer. It took a little over a week for the 'parts' to come in but as soon as it did, John called to update us of his progress and that, at the most, it would take him just a few more days and he would be able to call me back to let me know when we could pick up the computer! He called back a couple days later and we were able to schedule the pickup of my Aunt's computer on our return to the island. Let me tell you, I set up my Aunt's computer as soon as we got it home and have just been elated by it's amazingly fast performance! My Aunt's computer is moving even faster than it did previously and, even better, he was able to retain all the apps and memory that was previously on the computer! I have to say that John and SOHO Computer Repair are the genuine deal! If you have problems with your desk top computer, I would highly recommend SOHO Computer Repair and John, hands down! It was bound to happen sooner or later, yes that dreaded moment when you turn on your computer and it fails to start up normally. HELP Soho! Soho Computer Repair is located on the left side of Beretania Street across from Safeway. There is a narrow ramp leading to an open parking lot with 9 visitor marked stalls. You have to walk up a flight of stairs to the 2nd floor and down the hall to find your computers best friend John. My computer started to have slow start up problems and seemed to have some kind of software problem. John explained that there's a $75 diagnostic fee which would be applied to the repair, that was fine with me because it was still cheaper than buying a new one. He said it would be a 2-3 days and would call me. Well it took a little longer then a couple of days, but no problem John is one busy guy. I asked him how many computers come in during a normal day, his reply was multiple. Well he cleaned up my software issues and wouldn't you know it my hard drive was also going bad. John installed a new drive and transfered my data, reinstalled Windows, also did multiple test for speed and performance. Overall it came out quite a bit cheaper than buying another new computer and reinstalling all my data. So the last time I came to see John to have my Dell computer tuned up was 2019. It was running very very slow, even when turning it on was slow!
