Got a message from home that my wife was having pizza for dinner. Couldn't get it off of my mind so searched through Yelp for a nearby place with pizza and wine. Sofia's came up big and I understand why. My first glass was a Sangiovese and it was ok but the second glass was an Italian Pinot noir which had the perfect fruitiness to pair with my prosciutto pizza. Let me just say, do not order the pasta if you are the least bit hungry. When our pesto pasta arrived, my friend and I could not contain our laughter regarding the size. We counted each piece of pasta: 25 total fusillis. Yes, that means each fusilli was one whole dollar as the whole "entree" was $25. We also ordered a pizza which was a substantial size. The vibe, the staff and the food are off the charts good. Small, dark and intimate - exposed brick walls, gothic chandeliers and just a great overall vibe. Italian wines are good, although I prefer Napa Cabs, they pointed me in the right direction with the Super Tuscan. I only wosh they had some good salad options, I would have ordered that as a starter to my Margherrita (???) pizza. Walked in to order a carry on pizza and ya I got tit and while waiting a cool Dominican dude served us 2 complimentary champagne and I was like this place is cool and test ppl well so I decided to stay after learning that my party want to try a new beer they had and we did. It was my first time here, and it was an amazing experience! Andrea and Vincenzo were welcoming and made us feel like family. They made the ambiance so pleasant. The restaurant also has a great atmosphere for a date night or to enjoy dinner and wine with friends. The food and drinks were also delicious. Everything is homemade from the drinks to the food. We had the prosciutto pizza, tiramisu and lava cake. Every bite wowed us! We had some complimentary cannolis which also tasted so good and I'm not usually one to like cannolis. Best date spot in midtown east. It's tucked into a cozy residential corner with Christmas lights on the staircase in. My boyfriend and I have gone for many valentines days and date nights, and a few of my friends have loved it for 3rd dates. The interior of the restaurant is just as cozy with low lighting, candles, etc. They have an extensive wine list - get a glass or bottle to share. Every visit I have gotten the Sofia platter. It comes with meatballs, stuffed mushrooms, fresh mozzarella, bruschetta, and more. It's a great sampling of their small plates. The cheese platters are also incredible. They have a homemade ricotta as an option which is to die for. I would never expect ricotta to be an exciting cheese platter option, but it's so fresh and creamy, similar to a thick savory whipped cream. Sofia uses organic ingredients to concoct an Italian feast of a Sunday dinner with family and friends, yet somewhat pricey. Staff is extreme attentive courteous, welcoming warm and respectful to accommodate patrons' needs. As I was undecided what genre of red wine to inhale while my friend, being a typical male, was confident and assured to order a German white Riesling that was no doubt deliciously sweet. The wine list is extensive from worldwide regions, not exclusive from Italy. The waiter reassured my decision to produce four samples of red wine that we had the pleasure to intake. Ultimately I choose the Pinor Noir, Knightsdale Mendocino 2009 at $14.00 where the "Earth's soft tannins appeal to the dash of plum and medium bodied feel" entices me seductively. The wait staff are knowledgable with wine. With a faulty table top and leg our wait staff was able to produce a quick fix with coasters for stability. Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! I can't believe this place has been in my neighborhood this whole time! It is a lovely place to enjoy wine and tapas in the candle light. We were greeted by a man in suspenders, telling him the need for a 3 top, he told us it would be a 15 minute wait. Fine with us, up the the bar we went to wait. A few minutes later the three of us were sat at a 2 top table right by the door. I was a little annoyed because it was cold and drafty there, but when the waiter sincerely apologized and offered us wine samples, all was right in the world again. We sampled five different wines before making a decision. Five samples!! And if we wanted more, we could have had it. We decided on a tasty Shiraz/Grenache blend, two bottles in fact. We ordered the meat/cheese platter to start. When the waiter brought it out he gave us an orientation to what types of meats and cheeses were on the plate, then playfully quizzed us on it. We also had the Crudo mozzarella and a pizza with cotto. It was all so delicious. The staff is incredible. First, it was all men who shamelessy flirted with us all night. After the restaurant emptied, they insisted we spread out and pushed two tables together. Two bottles of wine later, a chocolate lava cake seemed like a good idea. It turned out to be a fabulous idea, ooey, gooey, chocolately goodness! Bottle line is we were totally taken care of, and will be back soon. read more

My friend and I were seated in the front area but there is also a back area that looks cozy and an outdoor seating area if you want some air as you have your wine. The dim lighting along with the candle lit table makes the place feel intimate and romantic. After reading the reviews on Yelp, I decided to try this place out last night. The reviews were right! This place is so cute! We got there around 8pm and were seated right away. We both were not very hungry so we ordered the cheese and meat platter and the bruschetta trio. Everything was really good! We got a bottle of dry riesling and it went great with our food. The best part of the evening was the service. The waiters there are all extremely nice and super friendly. They even gave us a free glass of wine and cannoli at the end of the night. This is definitely a great date place with the cozy, romantic ambiance. I am looking forward to my next visit. read more

Plenty of wine selections by bottle & the glass at very affordable prices. A few bar spots available but this restaurant gets crowded & fast... I loved the darkly lit ambiance - definitely sets the mood :) The table settings were super cute too - really nice plates & nice hand napkins from Williams-Sonoma... Nice to see small eateries invest in these things... Our server Sean was cool & comical, offering us good tips on what to order & cracking jokes on the side. Good attitude. Though their food menu is not vast, the few items we ordered was really good : the Mac & cheese and the Margherita pizza ($14). Highly recommended dishes & the prices are unbeatable. The bathrooms were nice & clean - located towards the back of the restaurant - down a flight of stairs. My only critique is that the servers & bus boys started clearing everything on our table as soon as they realized we weren't ordering more wine... Slowly, they removed our napkins, water glasses & water jug... Brought us the check and then came a few times to try and swoop it up when we told them we weren't ready yet. Finally, they came to us and actually told us they needed the table for the next customer. I get it... it's a busy spot ... But sort of annoying that they did that. Prosciutto really didn't have much flavor. Artichoke Dip - good value. Lots of dip and chips. Hard Cheese plate - I think it was about 6-8 1 inch cubes of cheese and an equal amount of small bread slices. Pretty good. Service was friendly but food took a while to come out. About 20 minutes of waiting just for the small pizza. The ambiance is nice, and I like the decor and lighting, but the tables are basically on top of each other. Wow, I had no idea this was here! However, I am glad that it is. The small dining area is very warm and romantic. There are about a dozen seats at the bar. I stopped in here on an after work catch[-up date with a girlfriend. Thankfully, we were set to meet early, 5:30; any later, and we would not have been able to find a spot at the bar. All the seats filled-up quickly. The tables were reserved at this time for those eating and enjoying wine, so we wouldn't have been a fit for the tables. Despite the smaller space, I would never have to describe it with any other adjective than cozy and comfortable. This wine bar definitely feels more like East Village than Midtown but it was a cozy little spot with plenty of choices of wine. The wine list was no joke. I was definitely confused and did not know where to start but my girlfriend told me we had to try the Gewürztraminer. Our bar tender was super friendly and told us that we could sample anything we wanted to try. Sweet! It wasn't a hard choice we were sold. But....what a hard word to pronounce our bartender just called it ge-voorts for the night and it worked. It was a bit "spicy" but a nice white wine. We also ordered the cheese platter. Overall this place was nice because it was intimate and not too noisy or crowded. The people were mostly working professionals grabbing a drink after work but it seemed like it could also work for a light dinner with friends. We were in the mood for wine and researched spots close to our office and Sofia was at the top of the list! It was a very intimate yet comfortable atmosphere when we walked in. It was crowded but not too crowded. Dim but not too dim. Had all the right vibes for what we were looking for. We were able to sit pretty quickly around 5:45pm but it definitely would have been hard to grab a table if we got here at 7-8pm. We ordered a bottle of wine to split...I believe it was a nebbiolo. We tried ordering another italian red, but they were actually out of it. Would definitely come back for drinks and would be interested in trying the food. read more

The bartenders could do cartwheels back there if they wanted to. It seems a little strange to me to such a big gap in such a tiny space. It was 6:30 and it was crowded. Luckily it's small enough where you can easily spot your party. We grabbed a seat in the small back area which was less chaotic but still pretty loud. The wine selection was good and the service was excellent. I found it a little difficult to hear my date at times because of the noise in the front area. We did not have any food but the smells of the dishes coming out were intoxicating. Will have to come back and try their food. Maybe it's because it was Thursday and people are usually thirsty by then, but it seemed really poppin' for what looked to be a quiet little wine bar. A truly 5 star experience from the moment you find this quaint bar on an otherwise quiet part of the street. If you didn't know it was here, you would never find it - thank you yelp for this one! We were lucky enough to snag two seats at the bar on a Sunday night - otherwise this place was packed to the brim with fellow winos. The ambiance is romantic and eclectic, reminding me a lot of a bar you would find in new hope, pa. The wine list was excellent and the staff very knowledgable and eager to guide you to your perfect glass of vino. Between the two of us we tried a few different wines but the Super Tuscan shined in my eyes. I rarely see it on a menu and it was pricey but very well worth it if you're looking to try something new. The menu looked like exactly what I would want to snack on while sipping - meat and cheese plates, meatballs, stuffed mushrooms, pizza, etc. We enjoyed the spinach and artichoke dip which was a perfect portion for two. I came to Sofia Wine Bar with a coworker who said this was one of her favorite spots in Midtown. I definitely was not disappointed by my visit. We arrived at around 7:30 pm on a Thursday night and the place was very busy, with great vibes. We were told we had to wait 15-20 minutes without a reservation. The wait was slightly longer than that, but they gave us each a glass of rosé on the house, which was fantastic. We were seated in the downstairs outside area, which was awesome. The lighting is very nice and we got a couch and table for the two of us. We then each ordered a glass of wine (the Chianti was awesome) and also the soft cheese plate. Our orders came out quickly and the service was great. The cheeses were great, and came with a poached pear and fresh bread. I would definitely come back in the future to try out different wines and maybe other menu items. read more

Perfectly fine pizza but horrible service. Two servers couldn't figure out who was responsible for helping us. One took an order but forgot the toppings we ordered! When I remarked that we had ordered additional toppings on our pizza (after a fairly lengthy wait), he took it away immediately, but he didn't bother with apologizing or acknowledging the error. Neither server ever refilled our water and we struggled to get their attention to get more. On the other hand, the Bianco pizza we ordered with pancetta was quite good. The pizza had enough basil to give it an almost pesto-like taste and the panchetta added a nice smooth flavor. The decor here is dark and intimate with fun touches. It can get a bit loud, but I could see this being a good casual date spot. The pizza is good, but not great, and the wine list looked good (if expensive). Not worth going out of your way. read more
