The service is great. The ambience is fine. The food is very mediocre. The last time I went there I ordered soup and some toast cause my stomach was upset. The restaurant definitely needs a good cleaning and update. Everything seems dated and feels like it hasn't been thoroughly cleaned in a while. Apparently there is also an ant problem that they are addressing in house instead of with a professional extermination company. The servers are nice and keep up small conversation. A stop along the way. Not a destination, but not horrible either. We were quickly seated in a run of the mill diner by a pleasant enough hostess, and greeted by a pleasant waitress. The table and seats were clean when we arrived. The staff did not promote it, but they offer a breakfast buffet. I did not order it because I had really been craving pancakes and had hoped that the diner would curb the hankering, but sadly I was let down. I had requested the sugar-free syrup which was brought with my meal, but never have I received pancakes without a side of butter. Unfortunately, the waitress dropped and ran so fast, that I didn't get a chance to ask. I waited a few minutes for a waitress to pass, but along with others, we waited, and nobody came by. Please note this is a high 3 star rating. Smyrna Diner is a typical traditional diner perched atop a small hill. Its clean and fairly modern. The staff is pleasant and helpful and service was good. Nothing really special to note. To get there you have to turn onto Cory road, which is a small side road, since there isn't an entrance on route 13. It seemed like this is a place all the locals go to. As I mentioned service was good and also it was moderately busy for a weekday. I ordered a Reuben and my spouse had a tuna melt. While at the Smyrna Diner recently, I ordered the beef dinner that comes with gravy and sides. When my meal arrived, it was cold and just covered with awful loaded up gravy and fries. You couldn't even see the beef. Our waitress never came back over for me to tell her that I can't eat this cold slop. The time while our waitress disappeared, made the meal even colder. I then told the drink worker, to bring back our waitress. Now, the evening manager Caitlin comes huffing down the aisle with our waitress, reaming me, for telling the drink server earlier, that I can not eat this meal. The way the cook/restaurant prepared this meal is awful but then to get reamed for planning on asking for a change of meal that never happened because this waitress/manager was going on and on, that I should eat the meal the way they have it or if I don't like the gravy, ask for it on the side. This manager was stating every time I come in, I order the same meal with gravy which is totally false. I get breakfast food on some of the visits but she knows exactly she states what I am ordering and how I don't like the gravy to stuffing on the turkey that was burnt on my last order. Now, while Caitlin was reaming me, stating every time I come in, which is here and there, but she remembers me asking for beef or turkey and since I don't like the gravy, she is jumping me over it. How dare she jump me, for stating I can't eat this, wanting to switch to something else but gave me no option of other meals as she was venting by our booth. She just kept going on and on. This was her nasty conversation to me. I wasn't even given an option to order something different. We will never return.. She quotes she is the evening manager. Fast seating, decent service, and damn good food! The four of us were seated immediately. Even though the restaurant had a sign saying they were low on staff, and waits were expected, we were in no hurry. The drinks were ordered, and our server had a great sense of humor, putting up with bad jokes from us old fogeys. The appetizers came out quick, hot, and FRESH. Great quality, and done right. The Lima bean and dumplings soup is AMAZING. Next up was the road my beef open faced sandwich, a diner staple. This one did not disappoint. This was freshly plated, and the gravy hadn't had time to congeal. Did this over fries, which made things even better. Topping everything off was the ability to pay my check online from my phone, rather than waiting in line at the counter. A very pleasant surprise. The place is busy, but I can't understand why? What's good is that there is ample parking and seating. I like the building and the seating. But the food is pretentious and childlike. I ordered a reuben. It had good flavor, but it was small like a child's sandwich and came with cheap crinkle-cut french fries. This was a $15 meal. I've always loved reubens. Reubens are usually rye bread stuffed with lots of coned beef, sauerkraut, and topped with a thick slice of melted swiss cheese. Then smothered with thousand island or russian dressing. Second time coming here (on our way home from OCMD) so we're not close at all. Our first time was phenomenal so much so we chose to come back for a second time on our way back home. The second time was horrible. Stopped in Smyrna overnight on our way home from Boston. We found the diner online and decided to order, 2 pot roast meals, salibury steak and a chivken fingers meal. Said order would be ready by 7:05. $62.46 total. Got there at 7:05, everything waiting and bagged. Got back to the hotel, passed out the plates. No forks spoons, knifes or napkins in the bags. No salt or pepper. Had to get all of this from the hotel. The pot roast ws average. Salisbury steak was very good. Fries cold. Macaroni and cheese below average.Chicken fingers were ok, butthey did not put the sauce my grandson asked for in the bag. Overall for $62 plus dollars very poor. First, let me start by saying I feel terrible for the waitstaff at the Smyrna Diner. They are absolute saints and many of them have been there for years and are well-loved by the community. As a former waitress, I know the difficulty they encounter when owners make decisions that make little sense. Today, my friend and I went to the Smyrna Diner. We were seated in a reasonable amount of time and we ordered coffee. We asked the runner twice to send over our server. The runner passed the message along, but our server did not come to our table. In time, we discovered the reason why: the kitchen was backed up and the waitstaff had been instructed not to take anymore food orders. My friend and I were both very hungry and my friend is a person with diabetes. I asked our server if we could get something that didn't have to be prepared - fruit cups - and she sent us to the buffet to grab some. Still, the host had apparently been instructed to keep seating people. Altogether we waited from 11:45 to 12:30, until I finally had it and we left. Our server comped our check and apologized profusely. We told her we knew it wasn't her fault. I understand there are staff shortages everywhere. I do. I understand that kitchen staff gets overwhelmed. But I cannot understand how a restaurant owner or manager would set up their waitstaff for failure and expect them to contend with hungry, irritated customers. Under no circumstances should a restaurant be seating people coming in the door when the staff cannot or will not take food orders from those already seated. This is not the first time I have walked out of this restaurant due to its shortcomings. But it is the last - I won't be returning again. If you choose to eat here, leave your server a nice big tip, because believe me, she or he deserves it for putting up with the mismanagement of this otherwise perfectly decent restaurant. read more

Hit this place on our way down to Ocean City Maryland more out of desperation than anything as we didn't want chain and sure as hell didn't want to get greased in the usual fast food style but seemingly that is all there is in the local area. Good: * The parking lot is gigantic and with how dead everything was last Friday we got a close spot no worries. * Fairly easy off/on from Route 1 although the entrance is a bit quirky in that you have to drive down the road a bit and turn into what looks like a self storage place then go down an almost unlit access road to get to the diner. * The prices for everything were in line with what you would expect at a diner as were the menu offerings. Bad: * The bill was screwed up where our waitress tried to charge all of us for four drinks even though the kids meals are drinks included and everybody else got water. * Drink refills? We apparently don't need no stinking drink refills because I'm still waiting for mine as our server vanished after our order was taken until she dropped off the bill. Ugly: * Lots and I mean lots of staff sitting around doing 100% nothing except talking, laughing and fooling around on their phones while the few customers that were there waited. * I guess they got a new POS system recently or they just changed out a lot of their staff because other than one person no one knew how to adjust off incorrect charges or take credit card payments without having a multi-staff conference. * The food quality is not good at all. Chicken Parm that is fried super hard served with an extremely harsh and bitter red sauce. The special chicken and dumplings was swimming in a gross amount of butter and it was also fun watching our waitress attempt to explain the dish to us as she clearly had no clue what it was. You know for the most part diner food should be a piece of cake. You take brain dead breakfast food and pair it with comfort/old school time tested favorites for lunch & dinner and you're done. But, when you have an apathetic staff that is more worried about sitting on their ass then they are about doing their job and you have either a kitchen staff that can't cook basic food/are using crap for ingredients then you do something that I didn't think was possible in that you create a diner that sucks. read more
