I always check online menus before I decide on eating somewhere to make sure that they have something I would like. My fiancé and I met two friends of ours here to eat dinner. I was going to get their southern belle pasta. When we were seated and given menus, I noticed that there were a lot of items on their menu that were marked out with sharpie... Including the pasta that I planned on getting. Which then put us in an awkward situation because there was nothing else on their menu that I eat except the fries... The waitress was kind and explained that it is because they are about to completely change their menu and change the whole name of the restaurant in fact. Which is understandable, but in that type of situation, they should also update their menu online not just the physical copies that they have inside the restaurant. It made dinner with our friends, awkward because everyone was eating a full meal except me, because the items that I would have ate, were not on their menu anymore. The Good: staff was friendly and provided good service. The vibe was pretty chill, big screen TVs and a good sized bar. The menu was good with nice selections. The Not so Good: I ordered the basic pulled pork sandwich. Since the sauce and slaw came on the side, I figured it would be hard to go wrong. It was nice and lean, not a lot of fatty meat as I have experienced before with pork sandwiches. However, it was soaked in vinegar. Way too much vinegar. It completely overpowered the flavor of the smoked meat. Some might mistake it as salt, but it was burning my chest on the way down. If it had not been for the fact that I was starving, I probably would have thrown it out. I choked down as much as I could then drank lots of water. I cannot say do not recommend because some folks might like vinegar soaked Q. It's a Carolina thing, but I've had lots of Carolina Q and most have been vinegar based and very good. This is a great waterfront dining experience. Their servers and bartenders are all great and friendly. Their food is excellent. The one I ordered, was not the sauce I got, way too sweet for me. The best thing going was an appetizer corn ribs with these small tasty peppers. Cole slaw was creamy and runny. Service average. Large space inside, with several local craft beers on tap. Went to Smoked a week or two ago. Figure I would order the ribs and have a delicious meal. The ribs came out and didn't look too bad. My mouth was watering as I was ready to dig into these juicy carnivorous beefy ribs. As I cut them open And spread them apart, I expected the meat to purely fall off the bone, however, that was not the case. The ends were so overcooked that they were burnt and. Charred. So I cut into the middle section separated the bones. I had a steak knife which I used to cut the meat off, and once again to my surprise, the ribs were so fatty and greasy that I barely got a few bites from each rib. I was truly disappointed based on the fact that Smoked is a rib and pulled pork Mecca in North Carolina. I know better for next time not to order ribs at Smoked. Yes that was the first time I had them. Previous to that I would get pulled pork sandwich, which was good. Never again while I order the ribs at Smoked. The mustard bbq sauce was amazing! We took it home and used the rest for home cooked meals. Good drink specials depending on the day. Food was ok and service was a bit slow and not especially friendly, although he did only charge us for 2 beers when we ordered three. I got a Cobb salad which didn't include bleu cheese or avocado. The food was definitely good and I would be nit picky on just a fee small things. We got 2 appetizers the wings and nachos with pulled pork. Pulled pork was a huge portion very tasty loved their quest. The guacamole was only ok. The wings my only gripe was they don't sauce them. We got buffalo wings and sauce was on the side. They had collards, brisket, black beans with a remoulade and tiny tomatoes. It was really tasty. They have a full bar and feature several moonshiner cocktails. I had the Brussels as my side. They were fried and bitter - not my favorite. The sandwich juices made the piece of wax paper dissolve on the metal "tray/plate". The brisket was a little dry. But the spicy Texas sauce helped with that. Honestly I think the paper it was served on soaked up much of the juices. The Mac n cheese was bland. It needs seasoning. My husband enjoyed the slaw. I've eaten here three times now. It's a favorite of mine. None of those times was very busy. Normally, I order the smoke'd BBQ original and collard greens (both delicious which is remarkable because cooking collards is a fine art), but the last time I ate there I had the smoke'd Cuban which was OK and the baked beans which were pretty awful. I've also had the "perfect margarita" which was far from being the perfect margarita. It was clean, quiet, servers were attentive and accommodating (we had my infant granddaughter with us). My husband had the swamp fries and they were pretty great too. The fries were cooked perfectly and the little red chilies were delish. Executive summary: Mediocre, uninspired, and over-priced barbecue Our server steered us to a sampler that had 4oz of the pulled pork, 4oz of brisket, 1/4 rack of ribs, 1/4 smoked chicken, two sides, two sauces for about $32. We shared it and chose the fries and mac-n-cheese for our sides. The pulled pork was the best of the proteins. It was moist and had a hint of a smoky taste. 4oz of "thick cut" brisket consisted of two small pieces, maybe 2 inches long and less than 1/4" thick. It was dry, flavorless, and had no bark -- blah. The smoked chicken had the characteristic pink coloring that comes from smoking; I thought it was moderately moist but flavorless. The ribs were overcooked, dry, flavorless, and a waste of calories. Smoke'd thinks highly of their sauces and dishes them out in 1/2 cup servings. Extra sauce comes with extra cost. We tried the moonshine and Kansas City sauces and to be honest I couldn't tell either one of them from the barbecue sauces you buy in the grocery store. The sides were very good. The "sidewinder fries" were a premium side and came with an up charge. I have no idea what made them "sidewinder fries" or why they cost extra, but in fairness they were served hot and were good. The mac-and-cheese appeared that it was made from scratch and was also good. Portion sizes for both sides were big enough to share. Our server was friendly and helpful up until we ordered. After our meals arrived, she checked in on us once and it seemed like we were inconveniencing her when we needed refills and to-go boxes. If you go to Smoke'd expecting that you've found some hidden gem of a barbecue restaurant at the beach, you'll be disappointed. If you are craving barbecue in this part of Brunswick county, just accept that Smoke'd is going to deliver an expensive meal that's probably not as good as what you get at home. read more

Had the smoked chicken quarters for dinner last night and they were absolutely delicious. So moist and tender cooked perfectly. My meal literally could not have been better. I had the potatoes and asparagus as my sides also cooked to perfection. Also tried some of the slow smoked brisket also perfection. The hot Texas bbq sauce is maybe some of the best bbq sauce I've ever had. The new chef there is continuing and improving this restaurants stellar reputation for smoked meats. Would recommend highly. Update: our second trip was a huge success! The Brisket Burger- a special- was delicious. That is saying a lot from my daughter who is a burger connoisseur! There was a lot of continuous nodding going on as my daughter ate. She says it is everything you want in a good smash burger. Juicy, tender, flavorful. The Mac n cheese was creamy and Smokey. Noodles cooked perfectly again. The Porkey sandwich had great flavor and with the creamy coleslaw, pickles and pickled onions was full of yum! Of course we HAD to Get the Apple crisp dessert again. We contemplated getting JUST that for dinner. We were greeted quickly and seated promptly. Our waiter, Tate, was very pleasant, knowledgeable and responsive. Really cool spot right on the water. We were seated in the back patio/indoor area and we were able to look at the water. Shades to pull down when the sun starts to set so it isn't blinding you and plastic to put over the windows when it gets cold. We went there for a group dinner and our service was quick and accommodating. The beer selection is large and has many different kinds which was awesome. I got the Porky sandwich and thought it was just ok. The bun needed a little more firmness to it as the pork is juicy and combine that with the hot sauce and its just a mess and difficult to eat. The Mac and cheese was awesome. I loved having that as my side and even would have requested that the side item be a little bit bigger. Some other members of my party got the tacos and mixed reviews were present on the tacos. The ladies seemed to like them while the guys were left feeling hungry.
