Somewhere around the late '10's, Smashburger was "falling off". Five Guys, Shake Shack, and a plethora of local businesses started jumping on the premium burger trend, leaving this pioneer-restaurant behind. My advice? Don't sleep on Smashburger. Somewhere around 2024-2025, they did a bit of introspection --- and have revamped much of their image: menu simplification, bolder brand identity, and ACTUAL value pricing on items. I remembering visiting Smashburger in the 2010's, and often my burgers and fries were drenched in grease. Not this time. Burgers are delicately assembled, and more or less look like the photo on their menus! In Paramus, I've only had positive interactions with the staff --- they have been helpful in ordering and recommending when I am indecisive. On top of that: don't sleep on their app! They have better "reward deals" than many other chain restaurants! I tried two items today: 1) Mexicali Big Dog ($7.99) - This is a "¼ pound 100% Angus beef hot dog, cheddar cheese sauce, grilled jalapeños, chopped bacon, crispy fried onions, fresh-sliced avocado, and Mexican crema on a butter-toasted Big Dog roll." IT SLAPS. All the flavors work together, and I traveled to work after picking it up --- 20 minutes later it still HIT. And oh my goodness that toasted roll, it just elevates the experience! 2) Double Jalapeno Crema Smash ($7.99) - If you're a fan of Tex-Mex and grilled jalapenos, this item is for you! The heat pairs well with the Crema in the burger, to offer you both a heat and cool effect. It is smoky, rich, and spicy in all the right ways! Definitely recommend --- and NOT SOGGY from any grease! (There is bacon in my photo --- I added that!) In any case --- Smashburger has made a wonderful comeback, and I wish more people knew about it!! Until then, I will be frequenting this location because it taste better (and is CHEAPER) than Shake Shack and Five Guys, and I will not take that back! read more

First time trying this burger joint . The smash fries were better than expected . Roasted rosemary and garlic , yum burger was flavorful and huge . This place is phenomenal. Never had Smashburger until my brother recommended it. Reminded me of Habit but more streamlined.! The burger I had tasted fresh and juicy. It wasn't dry or lacking in taste and the bun was not your typical bun in that ut enhanced the flavor. Definitely as good as Habit, 5 Guys and In-N-Out...Maybe even better by a hair. Service was friendly and nice and what I would expect so no issues there. The setting is different and a cut above the rest for just right. Not flashy like In-N-Out buy not blah like 5 guys. Have been visiting this location for years and normally have a good experience but some recent menu changes have made the food inedible. Kitchen staff cooking with reused oil, food came out super greasy. My friends and I ordered grilled chicken thinking this would be a bit cleaner tasting (the grilled chicken sandwiches used to come on a multigrain bun, no cheese. now they're trying to emulate the taste of the smashburger with the grilled chicken, using american cheese and a ton of grease -- big miss.) There was also an issue where menu prices on the LCD screens were not matching the prices at the register, seems like an easy fix but frustrating nevertheless. Not sure what's going on at corporate but seems the end is near for Smashburger. This location will not see my business again. read more

Went to Smashburger in the city and has an ok experience but today I came in and tried different items with a much better experience! Instead of the burger, I opted for the crispy chicken sandwich which was way better for me. Really crispy and was not salty. The fries were seasoned much better here and were hot. The strawberry shake has a very soft thin texture and was refreshing to drink after my meal. I'm glad I gave Smashburger another chance! read more

Party of 3 and 2 kiddies stopped by on Memorial Day evening for a quick bite after being on the road. It was empty, and there was only one person in line ahead of us. How it works: You place your order, pay, take a number, take your drink cup (and fill it), and then have a seat. Your food will be prepared and brought to your table very promptly. The burgers were all made with high-quality beef and very fresh. I have to say they are a little small. Two of the men i was with needed to split another burger to fill up. The fries were piping hot (I recommend the garlic fries!), and I couldn't get enough. The chicken tenders were mostly breading, and I had to pick through it to find chicken for my kiddies, so that was disappointing. Otherwise, the restaurant is nice and clean, and the bathroom could have been a little cleaner. But there was only 1 employee in the front and a cook, so you can't expect him to keep up. Oh yeah this was delish. I gave up cheeseburgers for lent and today was my reward. As a travel nurse I really do enjoy trying new places and a good burger is always a high point. Place clean on walk-in half hour after opening, I was craving a burger so I had high hopes for this place. Sorry, guys disappointment. Ordered my food online in front & walked in about 6 minutes after just to look around, but when I said my name, surprise my food was bagged and already sitting in the to-go area. Wow!? that was quick . Anyway grabbed bag. Yes, it felt a little cold, but I ignored it, mistake .. In car driving away (I had to go) I open bag to start on fries ughh cold, and tasted old. I couldn't eat them, nor could I turn around. Fingers crossed for burger .. nope as soon as I grab the burger, I feel the chill. OMG where do I begin! I have driven past Smashburger locations a zillion times but never stopped to try. I decided this time bc it was still my birthday and I wanted to try something different. The sandwiches were spectacular! We tried and shared three different sandwiches and were equally pleased with each of them! Sorry that I didn't have photos of the sandwiches but we ate them mugs! They was goooooood! We tried the BBQ Bacon Cheddar Crispy chicken sandwich and it had those crispy onion straws on it......omg I am drooling now as I write and remember it, it was that good! Also tried the Black bean Burger with bacon, omg the burger was so flavorful . Then we had a Brisket burger, that brisket was so succulent juicy and delicious, not dry at all, right amount of grill taste, not overly done, right amount of fattiness! Also had the tots with rosemary garlic and olive oil omg so delicious! I truly was not expecting it to be so good! I have driven past smash burger many times and always wondered about it. I finally decided to check it out since I had some extra time to kill yesterday and was starving. I was surprised at the menu. It was kinda small and they only showed double burgers no singles. I had to ask if there were any single burgers. I only ordered a single cheeseburger and a small coke. It came to $8 and change. I couldn't believe $8 for just a burger and soda!! The burger was on the small side. I was expecting a large burger for the price I paid and not to leave hungry. The burger was definitely good I'll say that but I did leave hungry. I was going to order fries but not for almost $4 more. That's insane. I got the Bacon Avocado Club and my sidekick got Twin Cities which is a burger covered in Swiss/Cheddar over garlic grilled onions on an Onion bun. OMG! He inhaled it. My Bacon Avocado Club was so good I got another one for my 13 yr old. Side order of tots (enough for a 'girl' though the guy up front said it was not a shareable side both of us shared and HE had a side of fries which were pretty tasty). The pièce de résistance??? The KNOCKOUT strawberry shake. I added the Chocolate version to my son's dinner that same day and .. yes... was NOT disappointed (I had to have at least 1-2 slurps). They brought me the milkshake first and didn't bring my food out until like 5-10 minutes my milkshake started melting. I advise you to choose a different place to have a burger. First and foremost, I don't believe they handle food and raw meat with care. I got food poisoning and threw up twice and felt nauseous shortly after eating here. The burger did not taste right at the time and it was maybe my second time eating here (first was like 4 years ago). I had the feta, cucumber and spinach chicken sandwich and my husband had the Baja burger. I enjoyed the mix of flavors while my husband said his was not spicy enough. When we arrived their was a short line to order and one women taking orders. Sorry this time and location it was not, clean, not well, and pee pot poor service. How do you get a small order wrong with 70 percent items wrong? The young girls were ok I guess and I think a Manager was on too but did not supervise well. In the grilling area it looked as if 5 people were jabbering . It is basic to have a bus person cleaning the tables, chairs, floors, Bathrooms, and food prep area. Not here. Teaching the staff is a normalcy in most food service locations. In ordering accuracy does count . Not this time and a few times before. When is the Bergen County Health Department doing an inspection? At the High Costs patrons do deserve better quality and a clean eating location. When are they going to correct the problems? I don't quite get the appeal of Smashburger. First, I went to the one in Hackensack and swore that I would never return. It was a salt ridden disaster. My restaurant amnesia took over and I decided to give the Paramus location a shot. This time the burger was edible. Medium rare - medium - medium well doesn't seem to mean anything when cooking these thin smashed burger. The meat is quite dry and needs lettuce, pickles, onion, special sauce, ketchup and mustard. My burger was Smashed all right. Way over done, nice char but dry as hell. I just had the regular burger with onions. More like a hockey puck!!! This review is more centered on the first time I tastes this burger, but also the service was friendly and the place was clean. The only thing I ponder is why they don't ask how you want your meat done but it doesn't matter mine was great and if you know me I still like my cows mooin like MOOOOO! Definitely better than any fast food burger stop. It's in that Shake Shack category (which is also awesome) but this place has so awesome flavor combos. I opted for the Mushroom, Swiss and truffle chicken sandwich. It was super yummy! Gotta love truffle mayo. The mushrooms were well seasoned too. And the chicken was moist and juicy. The sweet potato smash fries were some of the best ones I've had! They were in olive oil and rosemary. Super flavorful. Crunchy, but a still soft center. Mmmmm. Highly recommend these. The only downside was the salted caramel milkshake was basically vanilla with a dash of caramel...nothing like you get with a true caramel flavor...boo.
