Chicken tacos, with the shells dorado
    chepe m.

The best tacos in Placerville/El Dorado County just got a 2nd location!!! Santa Maria has got the best tacos in the area, so when we heard they opened a 2nd location that offered some different food items than the original location we knew we had to go check it out. This place is located on Broadway in a previous taqueria location called las Palmitas, so its easy to find and lots of parking. On our visit, I wanted to see how it compared to the original Santa Maria and also see what was new, so we ordered chicken tacos, carne asada gorditas, and chicken empanadas. First off, the new location doesn't offer the extensive meat options as the original, which is totally understandable, the other location is a carnicería so they have the ability to provide more options, on our visit they had the 3 standard meats (Chicken, Carne Asada, and Carnitas) After we placed our order, we went into the dining area and noticed they had some chips but didn't have a salsa bar, but at least there were chips. As we were coming back to our table we were able to get some salsa from the order counter. The chips were really good, they were warm, salty, and had a good crunch to them, we both said that they would make really good chips for nachos. The salsa had a good flavor, but was really mild. I can understand not making the salsa you give with the chips to start on the mild end, but thats the great things about having a couple of different salsas where the chips are, that way the customers can decide if they want something a little more spicy. But this was a good start to our visit! The tacos came out first, on the menu there is a option to get the tacos crispy. This does not mean crispy fried shells, but they do them in their version of dorado style. They crisp up the tortillas on the grill, and trust me it makes a difference on how good a taco can be. Visually the chicken tacos look identical to Santa Marias, served with a roasted jalapeno and onions on the side. The meat had that fantastic flavor and was moist. Combined with the salsa they use it was juicy but not fall apart messy. We did notice that the salsa on the chicken taco wasn't as spicy as Santa Marias (I am noticing a trend) Next up was their gorditas! When they were placed on our table I was excited on how good they looked, these things were stuffed. The shell is made from a chili masa that has a nice orange color to it. Stuffed inside were refried beans, cabbage, cheese, and carne asada. The first bite was pretty good, the masa shell was firm and kept all the fillings from spilling out, but it needed a little extra oomph with some salsa. After I opened it up and poured some salsa inside, the next bite was much better, but the refried beans do what refried beans do, they counter act any of the spice and flavors of the salsa. I got up and asked if they had any spicier salsa available, the lady smiled and said yes, they only hand out the mild salsa for the chips, I then took the cup of spicier green salsa and mixed it in with the mild. That made it just right, poured some of that in the gordita and that was IT! Exactly what it needed, DELICIOUS!!! I am happy to see empanadas starting to become a common option at Mexican restaurants. The only thing about empanadas, is they can be so different depending on where you get them, but we will always order them to see how they are. The ones we got were made with the same chili masa as the gordita, and were a decent 2 hand size, and had a crema on the top with a side a guacamolito. It essentially was the same as the gordito, but minus the cabbage and beans on the inside. These were just as good as the gorditos. That masa gives a real satisfactory feeling when you bite into it. firm and crisp on the outside, it has no problem keeping all the ingredients inside. These also needed the spicer salsa, so we were glad that we had that to pour over the top. Overall our I would call our first visit a success! the staff was extremely friendly, we had a conversation and made some jokes as we ordered. It felt like this was a place we had been going to for years despite being our first time. There were a lot of options, and we didn't even get to try any of the desserts. And if I am being honest, if you were to give me a option of going to Santa Maria or the new Crunchy Bites. I think I would choose Crunch Bites. Some of the things that would make this place even better would be a salsa bar, with at least 2 options the mild and a spicier salsa, and a soda fountain machine. But even without those 2 items this place is a 100% recommendation for all you taco hunters out there!

The food was yummy. Our waiter was terrific. I ordered Rojas chicken posole. It was served in a big ole bowl that was bigger than my Charlie Brown head. The broth had a good flavor. The shredded cabbage was served already mixed in the posole. The posole was topped with chopped onions, dry oregano, and chopped cilantro with lime wedges served on the side. I'm used to everything served on the side including the cabbage. I like to control the quantity of toppings. A bit of a control freak. Next time I'll ask for the items on the side. The posole had a lot of shredded cabbage and hominy. Each spoonful had a textured crunch from the cabbage. Slurping and chomping my posole. The hominy was soft and tender without being mushy. The complimentary chips n salsa were divinely delicious. Salsa was packed with flavor, nice thickness. No watery soupy salsa here. The chips were crisp and light. This Paco's is a sit down casual restaurant while the one in Pollock Pines is counter service. Both have a fun luchador theme that's understated without being outrageous. This location has a bar in the dining room shared space. The atmosphere can get rambunctious. Not rowdy but rambunctiously loud.

Yay! Our new favorite lunch place on Main Street!…read more We just stopped by last weekend, we've been wanting to try this place out but it just hadn't happened.... Last Monday we decided to have lunch there, one of our regular places is closed Mondays and this place was open so we checked it out...and we're SO SO glad we did! Atmosphere was nice and server was very friendly from the moment we walked in. First thing I noticed; $5 mimosas!! I asked if they did anything other than orange juice and yes, they had several other options so I had the cranberry version. Delicious! I went with their mac and cheese, my partner got the basic hamburger. Mac and Cheese -- definitely very bacon forward, much more than I prefer. That being said, I still liked it, it also had sour cream and green onion on top. Bacon lovers will LOOOVE this version, there is LOTS of it and every bite you can taste it. Normally I prefer my mac & cheese with no bacon or just a bit here and there, I prefer to taste more of the cheeses.....again, it still tasted good, its a good serving and I ate half and had enough to save for the next day at work. Creamy and well made, again I just prefer to taste more cheese than bacon. I wouldn't order this again but like I said, a bacon lover will LOVE this version. Now, my partner's burger was Incredible. We are PICKY with our burgers, and we both thought this one was fantastic. Big, and great ratio to the bun. He ordered it medium and asked for "a little char" and they made it perfectly. I took a bite and yeah, I'd order that for sure. The fries were great, too. Overall we were super happy with our lunch, I thought it was priced fairly as well. We will definitely be back!!

The pitfalls of the restaurant seem to be entirely the service. Most recently we went to Franny's on Mother's Day. We had reservations and walked in, on time. We were initially sat in a nice booth in the front of the restaurant. It was my wife and I plus our 2 kids, the table size seemed appropriate. After being sat, we sat without talking to a server for 10+ minutes, not even getting waters. Eventually, when someone did come, it was a waitress/hostess telling us that there had been a mix up, and we needed to move. We weren't excited on the idea, as we were happy where we were, but we moved to the back of the restaurant. This time we sat for 15 minutes without being acknowledged by any wait staff. At this point it is 9:25 and we've been seated for 25 minutes without even water. Finally a waitress comes, and takes our drink order, and our food order as we'd definitely had ample time to look over the menu. About 9:50 the food arrives. My wife and kids' food comes and is great. My food comes and looks off, and the waitress tells me that the kitchen accidentally made me a "veggie" scramble instead of the chorizo that I had ordered, but that she'd get me some bacon and all was well. I asked what was in the veggie scramble and was told it has mushrooms, which is a hard pass for me. She told me she could have what I had actually ordered made but it would "take a long time". I said O.K. - what else was I going to do? Finally it comes, and my wife is done eating, and the kids are close, so, I asked for it to be "boxed up". The waitress rolled her eyes and set to the task. I'm not a restaurant snob - but I really expected an apology or something to be "comp'd" due to the rough experience, but nope, full bill and no apology. Regrettably, despite Franny's being a local joint and having good food, we won't be back.

Since there aren't that many late night options, I decided to try their other location. It was easy to place an order online. Do note, if you would like to go inside and use the restroom, that is not an option. Only the drive thru was open. The food was fine and they gave us a bunch of salsas like I had asked. I noted I really wanted the spicy ones. I did tip $5 with my online order, so not sure if that had anything to do with it. Unfortunately when we got to Tahoe, we realized one of my street tacos was missing. I thought about calling to let them know, but it wasn't like I was in the area to do anything about so I didn't. The food is good for late night mexican. I'd rate it a 3 overall, maybe even 3.5. But I wish their online ordering had a way to tell them we were missing food. I may have tried to resolve it if so. Given the missing food, going down to a 2. REVIEW #3932
