The New York-style Picante was a thin crust pizza topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella, Cholula hot sauce, chorizo, linguica, Serrano peppers, banana peppers, and dollops of ricotta cheese. The pizza had a nice salty flavor from the cured meats but not a lot of spice. The Detroit-style Tony Jack pizza was built on a rectangular focaccia-like crust topped with white cheddar, brick cheese, mozzarella, bacon, green onion, peppadew peppers, ranch, and honey. The toppings had a nicely smokey, salty, unctuous flavor, but the best part was the bread-like crust, which was soft yet chewy, and had crispy, crusty cheese-baked sides and corners. We have been here several times now since they opened. Their pizza is simply amazing--it might take a few visits to find your favorite, but they probably have one! However, for every visit we experienced some of the rudest staff of anywhere we have been. Maybe rude is too strong a word, but they literally have NO personality! We could understand when busy, but today our visit was 2:00 in the afternoon, and they were not busy. And today's service rep was the rudest yet. Just absolutely so abrupt and no pleasurable demeanor whatsoever. Barking orders in Spanish to the back and hardly even acknowledging any of the customers. So sorry to inconvenience you! read more

Came here first thing in the morning. Been excited to try their pizza only to be disappointed. Their pizza was stale very hard to chew, it tasted like plastic. And chewed like rubber. I've spent 8 years living in New York and being brainwashed by some of the best pizza entrepreneurs about what good pizza should be. This place gives some New York joints a run for their money! Absolutely delicious and I expected nothing less from Tony!the decor is cute too making it not just good pizza but a fun place to hang. My 4 year old is a pepperoni connoisseur (I'm a good mom I swear he eats salads and healthy "real" food)and polished off half a slice. Tried to order a slice of cheese pizza on Tuesday at 6pm (peak hr). Even though there were a few slice left on display, they were "reserved for". So I asked for a slice of Sweet Gino. Again, was initially told they were reserved. At this point was a bit annoyed and asked what was available that's not spicy. That's when they changed their mind and said they can sell me a Sweet Gino, but gave me a beeper to wait. With significant wait time, I finally got my slice, which tasted stale.... Thank you, but no thank you for next time. I hate to write bad reviews, but this is for the good of their own establishment. Coming during a peak hour and having nothing available esp a slice of cheese pizza seems a bit unprepared. I wasn't the only customer that got turned away from ordering slices they wanted. The time estimate wait are off. I either have to wait after the pick up time or come at pick up time and my pizza has been sitting there for a while and it's cold. The shaved green onions and hot pepper oil help make this such a special pizza. Truly a balance of all flavors: sweet, spicy, savory, and fresh. Drizzle a little bit of ranch... agh. Immediately going into my long list of favorites. So, so good. But definitely above average, and with a generous amount of toppings and a nice French bread crust. I ordered a pizza with extra sauce, and (as usual) did not get it. I also ordered a side of sauce to cover that eventuality. I did not get that either. So good pizza, so-so service. You definitely could do worse. Love the pizza but the operation of this location is not great. Went in on a Friday for dinner after ordering the pizza was going to take over an hour - I do not understand why pizza would take so long ? I remember eating at the original location in Castro Valley many years ago and it never took this long for a pizza. Something is missing with the operations of the new location. read more

Pretty good! My only real complaint is lack of phone and Internet orders. We wanted multiple pies for a party, so my friend went and got in line before they opened (she was #2 on a Sunday) then had to hang out for almost an hour waiting with nothing to do. We wanted to try different crusts, so we got: - 12 inch New York style BBQ Chicken with NO cheese - Sicilian style Rosa - Grandma style The Genoa All the pizzas were praised at the party. The Genoa was the overall favorite for both toppings and crust. Sicilian style was very fluffy and bready, a true focaccia. Looking forward to trying more pizzas in the future. read more

I ordered a NY Style Pepperoni pizza hoping to be transported back to the streets of New York, but unfortunately it transported me back to Costco. Pizza was really doughy and thick. I think some parts of the pizza were undercooked because of how chewy it was. Totally looked similar to a Costco pepperoni pizza. When Slice House opened in San Leandro, we started going there, but now, they opened this location in Castro Valley, just a few blocks from where we live. This review is based MOSTLY on the more than 2 1/2 hour wait that they proposed to my husband just a few minutes ago (Friday, 10/4). please note that we attempted to call ahead, which would've made things easier to wait, but they are not accepting phone orders or Internet orders. This is 2024. We are not waiting two plus hours for pizza essentially a no sit down place. It's time to change something about your process or you will lose business, like you already did. Headed to Canyons Barbecue. Please note, last week we had the Genoa Detroit style pizza. Definitely needed something, probably sauce. It was very dry, but also very greasy. So, we attempted to go today and try a different style crust and ingredients to give it one more shot. Obviously, that didn't work out. So our experience so far is that the pizza was mediocre and the service is unacceptable. I would advise anyone that decides to patronize them to think twice about going on a weekend or during dinner time and also grab some paper towels to soak up the grease from the Detroit style pizzas. read more

We've gone here two times - one to just pick up individual slices - which the kids loved, and another time we ordered 3 pies - two Italian style, one Detroit. All 3 were really tasty. I suppose folks in CV were just happy to have a new pizza place other than Round Table or Mountain Mikes. I'd love to give the food a rating, but unfortunately I was unable to get pizza on my last two visits so I can only rate the service. I was actually visiting the Castro Valley marketplace last Thursday for the first time because I had come across it during an Internet search . The restaurant had not opened yet. They explained that they opened at 11am, and although it was around 10:55am, and they were just standing around talking, I gave them the benefit of the doubt and quietly walked over to get some delicious baked bread from another shop in the marketplace. Today I had a renewed appetite for a wonderful slice of pizza, so this time I showed up around 11:05am. There was a lady being helped in front of me so I stood in line. The cashier finished ringing up the lady and asked her to have a seat, as she walked another customer's pizza to their table. When she came back instead of helping me, she took a phone call, understandable, until 10 minutes later, I was still standing there in front of her as she answered questions about time and location. As she continued to talk on the phone, the other customer became agitated and looked at me, her pizza was just sitting there on the oven tray, and had not yet been pushed into the oven to warm. I asked the customer if that was her pizza. She nodded yes and rolled her eyes.When the cashier heard me ask the question, she pushed the pizza into the oven. Meanwhile, as she continued to talk on the phone, the line was growing longer behind me. She finally hanged up the phone. (no phone order was taken). I said "never mind", because by now my lunch is half over. She said ok nonchalantly. I returned to ask for a business card with a phone number to the restaurant on it. She said. " sadly we don't have any." She did look around to find a menu for me. I said to myself, maybe I'll have better luck on the phone, but if the pizza tastes anything like the service was, I don't want any. I guess I'll travel to Berkeley. Peace over pizza. read more
