Our usual SH spot is the San Leandro location but had to try out the new CV location. Missed the opening weekend crowd which was great. This location is at the CV Market Place. There is plenty of parking in this area. What I liked about this SH location was that there was more slice options and different ones than the one that San Leandro has. Second thing, they had "weekly deals" It was still kind of crowded so grabbed a slice to go. They also have many workers there - not like the other locations but it could have to do with how busy they get We love SH so we would def come to this location again if in the area. read more

The pizza was great - toppings are generous and the crust itself is thin and a mix of thin and chewy. The pizza itself was huge and the slice proportions make me reminiscent of the old Pyzano's restaurant Tony used to have in CV all those years ago (I got a 20in pizza with a small condiment shaker for reference). They have many different pizza slices that you can order individually as well (that they seem to rotate throughout the week) and host a variety of deals and discounts throughout the week (primarily a weekly happy hour and a small discount for first responders). Our go to spot for pizza when we are in the area! We knew that this originated from SF and has expanded to multiple locations. We liked the way that this was set up as it was inside a food court and had enough space for indoor/outdoor dining. We had our dog with us so we were able to sit outside and enjoy our food. If you're in a hurry/want a quick bite, they have ready-made slice options which they can heat up for you. I really appreciate when pizza spots have this option so that we are able to try a variety of options. The Castro Valley Christmas Parade brought the crowds, and with it, a stress test that Slice House failed so spectacularly it should be archived for business schools. What unfolded wasn't dinner service -- it was a crash course in organizational collapse. We ordered two pizzas through DoorDash. The app, blissfully detached from reality, said they were "ready for pickup." I arrived to find what can only be described as a human traffic jam inside a broom closet -- forty people packed in, breathing the same recycled hope. An employee glanced at my phone and said, "Not yet -- maybe eight minutes." Thirty-five minutes later, I asked again. A different employee took a photo of my order confirmation like she was building a case file, disappeared into the kitchen, and returned with the kind of statement that should come with a fainting couch: "Yeah, they haven't even started it. You might as well cancel." Then she walked away. No apology. No explanation. Just the silent confidence of someone utterly unburdened by accountability. Meanwhile, fifteen boxed pizzas sat on the counter -- clearly labeled with names and receipts -- growing cold while staff drifted around them like confused archaeologists. They didn't call a single name. Not one. You could have shouted "free pizza" and achieved more logistical order. Okay this place lives up to the hype! Definitely one of the best pizza I've had in recent memory. I love how there's a variety of pizza to choose from. We opted for the combo which came with tons of veggies and meat. We got the 20" which trust me, can feed at least 4 people. Those slices were huge!!! Bigger than Costco. It took about 20-30 minutes for our pizza to be ready. Around Sunday lunchtime, most seats were taken but we were able to grab a table by the time our pizza was done. Omg they load up the pizza with tons of toppings. It was heaven biting into each one. I am a thin crust gal, but their thin crust had a bit of fluff to it... In a good way! One big slice and I was stuffed! I loved how there were soooo much toppings. The veggies and meat tasted amazing. Slice House blowin' up yo! I think this is their 6th location with more to open I heard. This took over The Cannery Cafe inside the Castro Valley Market Place which is like a foodie mall with one big store and lots of little sub-vendors on the side each slinging their specialties (butcher, bakery, wine shop etc...) I've only been to the San Leandro Slice House, and I like this one better. Even tho they do have ample seating here, this one seems more geared for take-away. The lines can get long here during prime mealtimes like 10+ deep, but don't be scurred, it moves surprisingly quick. There's a huge glass case as you approach the register, showcasing pizzas of all types to get by the slice. Super easy to glance and pick, and they'll just run it through their conveyor oven for a couple of minutes, and voila a hot and melty slice under your nose in less than 5 minutes. Things tried thus far: The Rosa (3.5*) This is a Detroit style pie, thick focaccia-like crust with lots of crisp little cups of pepperoni, a thick tomato sauce laid in strips versus spread throughout the whole pie and they use a brick cheddar instead of mozzarella so the cheese has more flavor and sharpness but less creamy cheese pull. I'd kinda compare this to Square Pie Guys as this style of pizza is showing it's worth and popularity. I like SPG crust a bit more as theirs is a little more supple and soft, yet has a pronounced crisp on the bottom. And for something so thick, I don't want it be dense as well. I found the crust here to be almost too thick and bready and I wasn't loving the bottom crust, kinda chewy and sticky versus crisp and crackly. But I like the toppings here more as they load it like a regular Uhmurican place. SPG totally skimps on the toppings but loads the sauces. You will not get a bite of meat on every bite there, here you will. God bless Uhmerica! NY Combo (4.5*) They do a legit NY style crust. Super thin yet still has good chew. It will droop cuz the slice is so damn big, like as big as my head, and I got a big noggin yo. Toppings legit and balanced, a bit too cheesy for me, but that's my older ass getting nitpicky. I still like the cheese/sauce combo of Toto's Pizzeria in the West Bay better as that is my gold standard for old school pizza. But this place will get my support for the East Bay. Wise Guy (4*) This is more of a meat and cheese pie. Sausage and pepperoni with dots of soft ricotta. I got this for takeout and reheated it a couple of days later. Gotta have a good method for reheating and no a microwave does not enter the conversation. But if you know how, this slice can still rock after a good reheat. I actually make it even more crisp at home. Haven't got a whole pie from here yet, but I'm more of a fan of slices these days anyways. I don't eat pizza all too often anymore, so a nice slice every couple of months is perfect for me. And every slice is well under $8 and totally satisfies my craving. So happy to have a slice house in the neighborhood. It gets very packed on the weekend like no tables available but if you walk around the corner or on the second floor there is more vacant seating. They have a good system going with a wrap around line that lets you peruse the menu and ready made slices before you order. Ordering whole pizzas can take 30-60 minutes depending on how busy they are. Definitely faster to grab a single slice for them to reheat. I almost always get their NY style crust, the slices are HUGE and never soggy. We really like the pan style crust on the grandma pizza but it's always their "sweet gino" flavor that features a sweeter tomato sauce that's not really for me. My husband likes the Detroit but it is very heavy and loaded with cheese. Next time we go I'll have to try their Sicilian style crust to see if it's a happy medium. Their menu is very family friendly, there are always plain cheese and pepperoni slices for kids along with the more interesting flavors. Will definitely make this our go to pizza joint. read more

I order Pizza Rock every time I'm in Vegas and always bring one home in the car or plane... Their Detroit Style pizza is so friggen good. So I was super excited to see Tony opened Slice House in the bay. Word of caution.. do not expect to move at all for the next few hours after eating..! I ordered 2 Detroit styles and these are 100% the best I've had in the bay. There's 2 things that make a really good Detroit style. The super soft, thick, airy crust and the Wisconsin brick cheese. I'm happy to say the crust and cheese are spot on. The cheese on the crust is also perfectly done. Baked until just barely before being burnt. The main downside I would say is the sauce is a bit on the sweet side but everything else is basically spot on and miles above any other Detroit style I've had in the area. Almost every place uses standard mozzarella cheese which just isn't right. Some places also have the dough too dense or not tall and pillowy. Detroit style is literally my favorite style of pizza.. and I spent an entire month only making pizzas to perfect my technique. I love that place. And I was very happy to see many of the same pizza's on this menu. CV, you are lucky to have this new place! Keep it alive ok? We were able to find a table rather quickly. The seating area is small, and it was loud, but not overwhelming. I stood in line and ordered. We tried the Combo Americano, 20 inch. I have not had that one yet. So why not! They were handing out samples of the meatballs. TBH they tasted kind of burnt under the sauce, and it didn't make me want to buy them in the future. But it was a nice touch. The slices on the 20 inch are huge. Not exaggerating. The Combo Americano was really good, like a regular combo but fresher and better. I usually go to the San Leandro location but since we were closer to Castro Valley, we decided to pick up from there instead. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed when I got home and opened the box. The veggie pizza was sitting in a pool of water, and the box was so soggy it was nearly falling apart. If you've been to any Slice House, you know that the pizza is phenomenal. Sure, it's considerably more expensive than the other true pizza chains, but I believe it's worth it. What really prompted me to write this review was the incredible friendly service I received today at lunch from guy at the counter. I had an odd request, and it was met with a smile and a "yes, we can help." He really made my day. I checked it out on their opening weekend, and, as expected, the Castro Valley crowd showed up in full force to try out the new pizza place. With so many people, the wait time for a whole pizza was around 40-60 minutes. That's not unusual for an opening, but there are some things they could tweak. For one, the ordering line is a bit confusing and wraps around in a way that makes it hard to tell where you're supposed to order. Also, having to pick up your pizza right at the cashier creates a bottleneck that blocks access to the soda fountain, making the front area feel pretty crowded. Since the opening, I've tried three of their crusts with a couple of different toppings each: NY/Grandma/Detroit Traditional - 3/5: This was the recommendation on opening day, and I went for it without looking too closely at the toppings. It's basically a meat lover's pizza with pepperoni, Italian sausage, cheese, and sauce. This one got me to explore all the crusts and discover the 'Grandma' style, which sits between Sicilian and Detroit. It has a nice crunch but isn't as thick as the Detroit crust. New York Cheese - 3/5: Pretty standard. The crust didn't live up to the hype, and the sauce tasted a bit like it came from a can with only minor tweaks. It had a sour taste, kind of like something you'd expect from a fast-food pizza spot. Grandma Sweet Gino - 3.5/5: This one was a pleasant surprise and probably my favorite, though the sauce is definitely on the sweet side, almost like a dessert. It reminds me of a margherita pizza, but with a heavy dose of sugar in the sauce. The crust was thick, super crunchy, and almost felt shallow-fried. Detroit Hawaiian Hitman - 3/5: I appreciated the smoked meats on this one, which gave it a bit more character than a typical Hawaiian pizza. The honey added a nice sweetness, which would probably be a hit with kids. The Detroit crust is thicker and more bread-like, but after trying both, I think I'll stick with the 'Grandma' style since I prefer a crust that's less doughy. Slice House opening its Castro Valley location has been the best news for the neighborhood all year. I've been a long time Slice House fan and used to regularly drive to the nearest location in San Leandro to get my pizza fix. This location offers quite a different vibe, being inside a busy marketplace bustling with several other local businesses. It has very limited indoor seating, and outdoor dining is currently unavailable due to an ongoing lawsuit with a neighboring building owner. It's a very casual environment. There is no wait staff. You line up, order, pay, and then when your pizza is ready (text notification), you pick up your pizza box. There are thin paper plates and disposable utensils available if needed. Now onto the pizzas. So far, we have tried Pepperoni, Combo Americano and Hawaiian Hit Man on a 20" New York style. They were all excellent. The crust came out perfectly crispy and not overly cooked each time. All pizzas had the right amount of red sauce with the perfect balance of sweet and tart. Combo Americano is heavier on the toppings, so I think it would be easier to eat on a thinker Detroit style. Hawaiian Hit Man is the superior pineapple pizza! The pineapple is fresh and sliced very thinly over the red sauce. It's not overly sweet and has this slightly tart flavor that goes really well with with salty bacon and smoked ham. I love to drizzle this one with Tony Gemignani's Hot Pepper Olive Oil which they offer as a free condiment at the restaurant. I am super excited to try my other favorites at this location: Paesano, Wiseguy, Hot Honey, and Sweet Geno. I also excited to try True Italian which apparently is only available at this location. It was Tony's late mother's favorite, and he recreated it where he started his pizza journey as a tribute to her. I loved that story. All in all, I had a great experience each visit. The grand opening week was super busy, but now the wait time is much shorter, and you get your order pretty quickly. It's nice that you can also order by the slice whichever they have available each day. This is the best pizza you will find in the area. Highly recommend checking it out. read more

We got it to go and there was barely enough dressing-- but I like my salads over dressed. The dressing is house made and good. The outdoor seating is ample in front of the building. These added while the paseo side area goes through legal fights At 7 pm on Monday it was busy but the wait only 10 min It's been open a week I think it's unfair that other early reviewers marked them down for slowness or inefficiency. We ordered a couple of pizzas from Slice House, wanting to give it a try and get something different. We got a traditional NY style pizza with pepperoni and cheese, and a Detroit style BBQ Chicken pizza with bbq sauce and pineapple. While the pizza is definitely different and more artisan, and it has its own distinct flavors, it's pretty pricey. If you can get over the price, the Detroit pizza i was impressed with. Had the crunchy edges and bottom, with soft insides and plenty of toppings. I think they could have added a bit more sauce to complete the flavor and make each bite consistent, but over all 4 of 5 stars. The NY type pepperoni pizza I was less impressed with. I loved the crust, as you can tell it's not a premade frozen one. But the toppings were sparse and there was a lot of room between the edges and the actual toppings. Each slice was 1/3 crust and the rest toppings. I like a full pizza with toppings and cheese packed on, and maybe an inch at the edges to hold on to. The pepperoni was good, but there wasn't enough and it was super greasy. I mean I patted down the top of the pizza with a paper towel before we had some, and I still ended up with heartburn later. I'd say this one was a 3 of 5 stars. While the pizza is good and definitely different than the other local places and totally worth a try, the prices make me knock off a star from 4 to 3. If it was a bit more affordable, it would be a strong 4 star place! read more

The Sweet Gino grandma slice was a standout - the San Marzano tomato sauce had that perfect natural sweetness and rich flavor you only get from the real deal. We ordered the Hot Honey pizza, Caesar salad, and Gemelli With Vodka Cream pasta. The pasta tasted freshly made and it seemed to take a while to prepare, really flavorful. We made the mistake of ordering a whole pizza, and not a slice, but it was piping hot and delicious when it did come (after 15 minutes). And this was on a nice silver dish. I mention this because I take a full star away due to the ridiculous lengths this place goes to not do the dishes. Paper plates, okay sure. But the wonderful, fresh pasta going immediately into a PLASTIC CONTAINER when we didn't order anything "to go", likewise with the salad, seems beyond comprehension. Really good! Second day they've been open and was able to get a table just fine! Got the grandma style sweet Gino slice, which was really sweet and flavorful. The grandma crust is 10/10. Next time, I plan to call in to pick up a whole pizza, since I know the wait would've been crazy. We definitely will be back! They have happy Monday to Friday, 3-5. I just witnessed the cashier push the recycling and trash down with his bare hands. Didn't wash his hands but wipes his hand on white towel. Shouldn't he wash his hands with soap and water? Then he took an order from two customers and put food into boxes... Never again!!! This makes me sick to my stomach! Slice House offers many different styles of pizza all under one roof inside the Castro Valley Marketplace. They offer a selection of pizza by the slice, including two "Slice of the Day" choices for each day of the week. The New York-style Picante was a thin crust pizza topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella, Cholula hot sauce, chorizo, linguica, Serrano peppers, banana peppers, and dollops of ricotta cheese. The pizza had a nice salty flavor from the cured meats but not a lot of spice. The Detroit-style Tony Jack pizza was built on a rectangular focaccia-like crust topped with white cheddar, brick cheese, mozzarella, bacon, green onion, peppadew peppers, ranch, and honey. The toppings had a nicely smokey, salty, unctuous flavor, but the best part was the bread-like crust, which was soft yet chewy, and had crispy, crusty cheese-baked sides and corners. While both of these slices were tasty, they were rather greasy and heavy, and came at a relatively expensive price for pizza. read more

We have been here several times now since they opened. Their pizza is simply amazing--it might take a few visits to find your favorite, but they probably have one! However, for every visit we experienced some of the rudest staff of anywhere we have been. Maybe rude is too strong a word, but they literally have NO personality! We could understand when busy, but today our visit was 2:00 in the afternoon, and they were not busy. And today's service rep was the rudest yet. Just absolutely so abrupt and no pleasurable demeanor whatsoever. Barking orders in Spanish to the back and hardly even acknowledging any of the customers. So sorry to inconvenience you! read more
