Creating their own designs

We had such a good time at the restaurant! My kids loved making their own pancakes and decorating them. The servers were very sweet and attentive even though it was just. Such a cute place and a great idea for breakfast.

This is a fun and very cool breakfast place to have breakfast. You get to create your own pancakes and cook it on the griddle. If not you thing you can order you food from the restaurant kitchen. My daughter and me did the create you own pancakes, I had the blueberries and she had the chocolate chip with whipped cream. My partner in crime had the loco moco which was really good as well. This is very family and kid friendly.

Loco moco

We visited with a large group and were pleasantly surprised that we were seated within about 30 minutes of arriving. The restaurant was clean, spacious, and able to accommodate our party comfortably. For food, we ordered the make-your-own pancakes for the kids, the loco moco, and the Hawaiian pancakes. The loco moco was good overall, although the hamburger patty tasted more like a premade patty than a fresh, house-made one. The Hawaiian pancakes were tasty, but they were fairly similar to standard diner pancakes. I was hoping for more nuts folded into the batter to give them a little more texture and flavor. If you're looking for authentic Hawaiian food or strong Hawaiian flavors, this probably isn't the place. The dishes we tried felt more like standard diner fare with a Hawaiian-inspired twist rather than traditional Hawaiian cuisine. Our server, Juan, provided mediocre service. He didn't check on our table very often, and when there was a mix-up with one of our orders, he came across as slightly rude rather than helpful. The experience wasn't terrible, but the service definitely left room for improvement. Overall, the restaurant was clean and accommodating for large groups, the food was decent, and with more attentive service, the experience could have been much better.

Banana bread french toast

Solid breakfast and a unique experience, what's there not to like? We got there on a weekday morning and waited about 30min to get a table, which wasn't bad considering the crowd outside when we got there.. We ordered the banana bread french toast and the buttermilk batter with bananas, blueberries, and chocolate chips. The fruit was fresh and the batter was a good, thick buttermilk. We had fun trying to draw different shapes and our 4yr old really loved it. He wanted to go back every morning for breakfast. Our breakfast was definitely carb heavy with the pancakes and french toast. The one batter was a good amount of pancakes for the 3 of us so probably should have ordered more protein. The french toast was good but also just kind of tasted like banana bread so nothing special. The server we had was very welcoming, friendly, and attentive. Definitely worth stopping by if you're in the area. Hope you enjoy!

Closer to 3.5 stars. Cute concept, and executed fairly well, but at the end of the day, the food should reign supreme, and while the food here wasn't terrible, it wasn't fantastic either. The pork belly Benedict was decent, and the pancakes weren't bad at all. We added chocolate chips and syrup which added to the cost. My mimosa was also pretty good, I just wasn't terribly impressed with any of it. Service was prompt and friendly. Place was spacious; we were lucky to get a table in 20 min; the place gets packed quick. My 5-year old daughter liked it enough for me to come back, but not sure if I would if it was just me

Made our own pancakes at the table

This place is good for the experience. Fun for my daughter to fool around and play with her food. The batter for the pancakes itself isn't anything spectacular. Its more for the fun of it. My husband ordered a banana french toast that he absolutely loved. Great basic breakfast spot for the fun of it.

Local, fresh and friendly service with pretty incredible pancakes. The menu is great, sure they sell pancakes and you can even be the master of making your own tableaux but the banana bread French toast is pretty amazing too. There are monthly specials, burritos and even booze if you are feeling so inclined. Making reservations comes in handy at this family friendly breakfast spot, it's no wonder they are voted best in breakfast.

Loaded Potatoes + bacon

Quick and friendly service, the decor is super cute and the restaurant is clean. I ordered the loaded potatoes with bacon and absolutely LOVED it. Super filling and very tasty, the peppers in the potato mix were a great addition. My husband got the grand slap which he enjoyed and my girls shared pancakes. The strawberry jam is DELICIOUS!!!!!!! We have gone back two more times as we liked it so much!

Strawberry shortcake pancakes and Elvis

I was really looking forward to Slappy Cakes but it did not live up to the hype. They are extremely stingy on toppings. I ordered the Elvis pancakes and I didn't even receive half of a banana. Mind you the small pinch of bacon and peanut butter. The taste of the pancakes was decent but I'm not sure how you can really go wrong with pancakes, for $16 id expect a lot more. I'd recommend trying out some other small cafes for pastries and coffee instead of Slappy Cakes.

Build your own pancakes

Build your own pancakes or a lot of fun for the kids. Make your own pancakes. The kids had a lot of fun and it was a lot of fun to add the toppings.

Avocado Toast

This place opens early in the morning for breakfast, especially for those travelers traveling east. They have a hot griddle on each table to make pancakes live (make your own) which probably is a great experience and tasty as well. We although went for their avocado toast - not what they are known for and neither they should be. Nothing extraordinary there, but micro greens make it look fancy at the least. Ambience is good and service decent. Not every place on the island that's highly rated is great and this serves for a great example.

The pictures do it no justice. Slappy cakes was awesome!!!!! Came here for breakfast and wanted loco moco & pancakes to fuel us before we hit the beach. Husband and I were really happy with the food & service. Loco moco was one of the best I had on the island and the perfect portion for breakfast. The pancakes were so yummy too!!! . We came right as they were opening and got seated quickly. Clean & huge inside. Staff were so friendly and overall great dining experience. 10/10 food 10/10 service

Got in quick and food and service was great. Fun idea to be able to design and cook your own pancakes on the table grill.

Slappy Cakes Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Slappy Cakes

I've seen lots of mixed reviews. What should I expect going here in June - July 2025?

Just plan accordingly. It's busy on weekends, but usually there's no line if you show up right when they open. If you're from the mainland a visit to Slappy Cakes is always worth it. Get the griddle table, create some fun edible art and if you're…

So you have pancake batter without eggs?

Yes! They have the best gluten free & vegan pancakes!

We are a party of 9 (5 adults, 4 small children). Do they have adequate seating for that?

Yes

Can you make reservations?

I don't believe you can. And they did have limited space seating when I was last there. We had a very short wait before being called in to sit. And it was DEFINITELY worth it!!

Are there vegan options?

There are a few vegan options. You can check out a menu on their website.

Do you need a reservation?

No reservations aren't required, but it gets busy and you may have a line of people in front of you.

Can the loco moco be made gluten free?

Probably not as you can remove the onion straws but the gravy almost certainly has some flour in it.

Do they have vegan or egg-free batter?

Yes!!! They have vegan & gluten free batter & it's DELICIOUS!!! Definitely try it!

Are sundays busy?

It seems like every day is busy, but if you don't mind eating at the bar then you will gwt a seat a lot faster. So worth it!!!

We ordered and the guy taking orders was super cool, great energy. Then the lady who was on drink duty was so incredibly rude it killed my vibe. We got a cold brew, a cola and a brewed coffee. I wasn't expecting the cold brew to have cream/milk in it so I politely said "Was this one the cold brew?" She snaps "No, that's the cold brew" and points to the cola. The she asks if my name is my name and says, "No that's the cola, that's the coffee and that's the so ono (cold brew)." So instead of simply confirming that I'm right, she killed my vibe on the whole experience. Foods good but fix the attitude of your employees or good food only gets you so far.

Don't panic, trust the process. The food is divine! Great portions and flavors. The chilaquiles with chorizo were a nice spicy. They do hit but they also have a nice chili flavor so it's not just heat. Loco moco was good. My only change would be to cook the patty a little more on the medium side rather than well done but none the less it was very good. French toast was amazing - no syrup needed!

I smelled it before it was brought to the table! So succulent, so flavorful! Perfect combination with the rice and the salad and fruit! I haven't had anything on the island like this and I've been here a week! I had the pitaya smoothie and the taro bagel. Delicious and delicious. The taro bagel is also beautifully unique. I haven't seen anything like it yet which is weird because it tastes really good. Altogether, it was worth the wait and the hectic environment!

Even for my taste, they were almost overwhelmingly sugary, to the point where I could barely taste the actual coffee. I don't mind a sweeter drink, but I still want to be able to taste the espresso and have some balance between the coffee and the other flavors. The frozen mocha was probably the best example of this. It tasted more like a chocolate milkshake than a coffee drink. It was rich, chocolatey, and definitely delicious if you're in the mood for something sweet, but I could barely taste any coffee in it. I'd consider getting it again as more of a dessert or sweet treat, but definitely not when I'm looking for a caffeine fix. I would have liked a stronger coffee flavor to balance out all the chocolate and sugar. The island latte was again very sweet, I liked the syrups they used but i wish there was a stronger coffee taste. Prices were also on the expensive side, almost $20 for 2 drinks. Parking was another downside, as it was pretty difficult to find a spot nearby. Overall, I'd say this place is better suited for people who enjoy dessert-like coffee drinks rather than those who want a good balance of sweetness and coffee flavor. If you have a serious sweet tooth, you might enjoy it, but even as someone who loves sweet coffee, these drinks were a little too much for me.

The location is amazing, right on the water, and the establishment is rather small. We were sat at the bar, and I really enjoyed having the ocean view all around. Bar service was fine. However the food and drinks are "meh" at best. We went during "happy hour," and the menu is limited. The only item I found unique and interested was the ube hot bread -- definitely worth trying; I haven't seen ube at many other places. I found the seared ahi bruschetta to be a bit meager and found the coconut shrimp to completely miss the mark (tommy's is definitely the place to get this item). I also wasn't impressed with the makai tai (mai tai). So while I'm glad business are returning to Lahaina and I loved the views -- sadly the food and drinks didn't do it for me. Perhaps worth trying for dinner, but something tells me not. Furthermore there are definitely many better places to go to for happy hour (such as Monkeypod).

The ocean view was incredible, and they have outdoor seating so you can enjoy the water while you eat. Definitely a nice way to spend lunchtime! Service was friendly, fast, and accommodating. We decided to order family style and share a few things since we weren't that hungry. We got the Furikake Garlic Fries, which are tossed in butter, garlic, and a nori-sesame mix. So good! We also ordered the Shoyu Poke; Fried Noodles with egg, kamaboko, and Spam (asked them to hold the bean sprouts); and the Teriyaki Beef. The beef plate comes with mac salad and two scoops of rice, so you get a good amount of food. Everything was great for a casual lunch! The restaurant was clean, and parking was easy with plenty of stalls right out front. Always appreciate that when you're out exploring and making stops around the island. Disappointing Experience - Overpriced for the Quality…read more I haven't been to Aloha Mixed Plate in years, and I was really looking forward to coming back. My family and I visit their sister restaurant, Star Noodle, quite often, so I was expecting the same level of quality. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. We visited today at 1:15 PM, and I have to say I left pretty disappointed. The shoyu chicken was dry, and the overall food quality just didn't match the price. For a family of five, our bill came out to $178, including soft drinks. That's a lot of money for a casual plate lunch experience. What was also disappointing was being told by our server that they do not offer a kamaʻāina discount. As a local, it's always nice when businesses recognize and support the community that supports them. I understand we live in a tourist destination, but the prices should still reflect the quality of the food and overall experience. Unfortunately, Aloha Mixed Plate felt more like an overpriced tourist spot than the local favorite I remembered. At these prices, I honestly wouldn't even recommend it to visitors. My recommendation? Save your money and head to Star Noodle instead. We go there often, and the quality and experience have been much more consistent. I really wanted to enjoy coming back, but sadly, this visit was a letdown. 3 stars.
