I got Joel's contact information from a neighbor who was happy with the work Joel did pruning some large trees. I had some good sized redwood trees I wanted to remove. Joel provided a reasonable estimate for the work along with proof of insurance and his contractor's license number. I approved the work and it was scheduled for a couple of weeks later, the earliest I could fit it into my calendar. Joel and his team of 3 workers showed up early. They were very professional as they limbed the trees, dropped the trunks in sections, ground everything up and cleaned up the work site. They were able to complete the entire job in one day, even though it could easily have stretched into two. I couldn't have been more pleased. But I still had the stumps to deal with. One tree service told me they couldn't grind them because they were on an elevated bank, 2 ft. above ground level. I talked to Joel about using an auto ramp to get the 800 lb. grinder up to the top of the bank. He ran with the idea and his worker ground up the stumps two weeks later. We've used them a couple times, and the last time, we had a very challenging job for them. A large tree had fallen on our house. They took a while to figure out a solution to the challenge, however once they found out their plan of attack, they got the work done efficiently and cleanly. There was high potential for damage of the house when completing the job (other quotes we had, had referenced how there might be significant house damage). The guys at skyline managed to do the whole thing with only breaking a little window, pennies compared to what could have happened had we gone with the other guys. In short, the job took a little longer than expected, but the price was very fair, and the job was done with the necessary care. read more

Julio pronounced HOO-lee-oh, is kind, patient, and dependable. Where this tree service shines is that Julio is the only person from a tree service I contacted (of 6 tree trimmers) to give me a clear plan to protect the flowers and native shrubbery I bought, planted, and nurtured with tons of 'sweat equity in the last two years. The others were oblivious to flowers and talked vaguely of replacing any damaged plants, but he talked about how he would protect the plants, and he noticed them, too. One guy before him came close to trampling blooming flowers, stopped by my shriek. Another special thing about Julio is the team he hires. When he said his team could cut with branches falling precisely where they wanted, he didn't exaggerate. Not an iota of damage to fence, plants, or anything else. My past hires sometimes left a wake of destruction in their path. Julio talked about "paying a little more" to his cutting team, and I felt good about that. He even helped me solve a long-time pond problem while supervising the tree cutting team. The price was a little lower than some, but in the general ballpark of other estimates, while the respect for the good of all, excellent service and outcomes, and good advice were priceless. He brought proof of both Workmen's Comp. and Liability Insurance, so those issues are covered. While many other tree services wanted to cut down all the Monterey pines at once, his feedback was consistent with my research and beliefs, not to mention tolerable pain and grief at losing my beloved trees. (The one that was leaning and threatened the kids in that yard was much preferable to all five, not to mention denuding the top of the hill.) He contacted the owner of the property behind mine (that I haven't been able to identify on the street behind me) and got permission to use their yard. He got approval of the cleanup before leaving. Others have wanted me to contact them. It was a relief that he could tell what yard belonged to what house from the streetside. Another service provided. The tree was taken down to ground level making cover much simpler and decreasing the grief of tree loss. Stumps are ugly, hard to cover, and look like the skeletons of dead trees. This was a big plus for Julio of Skyline. Julio and his team were an hour later in starting than promised. I actually liked that no excuse, but absolute honesty addressed the lateness. Having experienced the services of several others, I would recommend Julio of Skyline Tree Services with applause and pleasure. Even though they are from San Jose I listed them as in the Richmond area because Julio comes around at intervals and is usually scrupulously timely as if the business were next-door. When our neighbors in our very wooded area hired Edgar, he stopped by to ask us if should do ours at the same time (we have a house adjacent to his clients). After few calls got the appointment after 1 week. As usual they canceled the appointment at the last minute. No response after that. Do not pick up the phone or respond to text messages. WARNING: If you employ this company, be aware that they're not good to their word about completing the job! DON'T PAY THEM IN FULL UNTIL THE JOB IS TOTALLY DONE!. Their tree work was ok, but they were to take wood chips from our front yard to a bed in the back. They said they ran short of time after completing the trimming, but said they'd return the next day. (We had a pile of chips on the side of our driveway.) That was 2 1/2 weeks ago, and it never happened!! No returned phone calls/texts. We had to hire someone else to complete the work. Finally got Joel on the phone by asking a Spanish-speaking friend to give them a call. We asked for at least partial refund of the $200 that was this part of the deal. He said he could send only $50, but that is also 3 days ago. No check! I obviously trusted them much too much! Never again! read more

Like other reviews said, it was difficult to pin the company down. We actually don't know if he wanted to trim our tree (it was a large tree and complicated). The price was reasonable. (We got three quotes and Skyline's quote was in the middle.) Once the tree cutting crew was there, they did a great job. They cut down what we wanted and looked like they were having fun with the job. We did encounter a problem later. It has been difficult to rectify the problem. I don't think it has yet been resolved and the tree was trimmed in February 2017. read more

Joel was excellent and professional. He provided a quick and competitive quote and took down a giant 150 ft tall Monterey pine tree. This was a 40 year old tree that required precision to remove between three homes, fences, small tress etc. Great job nothing damaged and they cleaned up completely. We had been neglecting the trees on our property for a couple years and needed some help with pruning them back and away from power lines. My husband and I found Skyline Tree Service on Yelp and decided to give them a call. Joel arrived promptly on time for a free estimate. He was ready to start the work in 2-3 days. He walked us through what he would do and how long it would take and answered all our questions. We got quotes from two other companies and found Joel's to be the best. We had three big trees to be pruned and many fruit and decoration trees that needed some shaping. He also threw in some hedge pruning to make our property look even and clean. Joel and his crew were very professional, detailed, and respectful. They were clean with they approach and careful with our house, lawn, and other trees. They neatly stacked up their cuttings. When they left after two and half days, it was hard to imagine that there had been a lot of tree cuttings on the lawn. They left our lawn and sidewalk cleaner than before! After seeing great reviews and references I was very disappointed in my interactions with them; we needed a large fallen tree branch removed from our driveway on a Sat. They came out and gave me a quote, which I accepted if they could do it on Monday. They said they could, but didn't show up by mid-afternoon, so I called and left a message, but no one returned my calls. Late Monday afternoon I called again and was told they probably couldn't do it that day. I told them I was very disappointed in their service and would find someone else.
