I hired them to remove a dead birch tree in my yard. Gary came out right away and his estimate was at the lower end of the range of several I got. The crew was extremely careful taking the tree out, making sure branches didn't drop on the rest of my plants and driving the stump grinder into the yard in a circuitous path to avoid damaging hardscaping and new planting I'd just done. We hired VTC to trim a number of oak trees in our front and backyard as well as some other types of trees. Gary and the crew were all very professional, knowledgeable and efficient. Gary took the time to explain how his company differs from competitors. Not being a tree expert it was helpful. Basically they trim trees by not just cutting the length of branches but also by thinning out everything and shaping/styling it. The more I learn about trees the more I appreciate the care and skill they applied. It's like going to a very skilled barber vs. someone who just gives you a horrible buzz cut. Winter and spring 2023 brought extensive damage to my front yard. Bougainvillea has hung from hooks on my porch beams for decades. An intense wind storm lifted the vines off the hooks, and they were too heavy for neighbors to rehang them. Then, branches just snapped off my tree on a couple of perfectly calm days. My friend who is a consulting arborist recommended that I call Gary Ortega of Valley Tree Care. Gary came over promptly and gave me a bid that was less than what I'd dreaded to remove the broken branches and rehang the bougainvillea. He said he was giving me a deal, and my arborist friend agreed that assessment. Gary also advised me to remove weight at the ends of branches and to thin the tree every 3 years. Sergio and his crew of two arrived the following afternoon and completed the entire job in two hours! Sergio consulted with me on how much wood to remove from the heavy bougainvillea, and I'm confident that the vine will grow back robustly. Recently Valley Tree did a major tree trimming for me on about an 80 foot high tree in our yard and a smaller 25 foot high tree. They did an exceptional job. Both my neighbor and I were very pleased. We have used Valley Tree Care many times over the past 10 years, and plan to use them exclusively in the future. They trim many trees on our property but most importantly the California Live Oak trees in the back of our property. These trees are a big part of the unique nature of our back yard, and subsequently are a material element of our property value. Valley Tree Care is quite knowledgable about the particular complexities in the proper trimming of California Live Oaks. When we received the estimate, Gary (owner) took the time to educate me on how and why they would trim the trees. I am not an expert in tree trimming, but have learned a bit over the years. These oak trees grow quite tall and have long branches that are very heavy at the ends. Careful weight reduction needs to be done to the ends which is difficult to do. The Valley Tree Care team, led Sergio (he is outstanding!), thinned the branches by about 15% while removing dead wood and unnecessary branches to shape and balance the tree. As it involves careful climbing and a lot of small cuts, it is not super cheap. I have had experience with other tree companies that will come in at lower prices to trim, but leave the ends as is to only get heavier over time. I think they call this "lion tailing". Not optimal for the tree. They do this because it is time consuming and expensive. They tend to make cuts of large branches and inside branches that can leave the tree look hollowed out. I have included a couple of picture showing the end results. Also of note, the crew was alway extremely careful not to damage existing plants, bushes, structures and trees. We have a pool in the backyard with a power cover and they devised a way to ensure that no falling branch would damage the cover or pool. They really seemed like they cared. Clean up was also stellar. If you have valuable trees that you want to live and flourish, Valley Tree Care is a great partner. If you prune the tree correctly, you should get at least 3 years between trimming. If pruned incorrectly, the damage could be irreparable. When these older trees are such an important part of your overall property value, it makes sense to do the research and go with the best. We had a tree growing right thru the eaves of our house.... I guess 50 years ago it might have been cute.... as it grew, the tree eventually started dropping large branches during the rainy season and became a hazard. The project was more difficult than normal in that the only access to the tree was from the street with part of our house and another tree in the way. The tree was also right next to our gas main. VTC helped us navigate the permit for removal with the city of Palo Alto as well, arranged for a large crane so that they could cut and lift the tree safely out to the street. We had an ivy covered trellis which was leaning and collapsing along a portion of the boundary fence at our house in Palo Alto and needed to be cut way back and Gary responded quickly to our need just like they did in removing a large juniper at our house last March the excellent crew did a good and careful job in pruning the ivy according to my wishes. It was complicated because the wood trellis was leaning so badly and the ivy was intertwined with it so a large portion of the wood trellis had to be cut back along with the ivy. We had a crew of 5-6 guys led by Sergio at our house on three occasions since the new year to take care of tree work. First time was the eleven tall redwoods which overlook a creek. Amazing to watch the guys in these large trees! Second time was two large cedars; and third time was a row of pittosporums, over tall and bushy.
