It's been a long time since I've had a seafood boil and decided to try this place out. A lot of seafood boil places are closed on Monday but I was lucky to find this one and quickly got seated. I was greeted by a really nice young guy (didn't get his name) who handed me a menu to look at. I combed over the menu and decided to order shrimp and added corn, potato, and side of steamed rice. You're able to choose from a variety of sauces and can choose your own spice level. I decided to go with their house sauce which i felt was a fusion of Cajun and garlic butter sauce; with a medium spice level. I do want to add the shrimp doesn't have a set price. The price is dependent on the Market price which turned out to be 15.99 for a pound of shrimp. You don't get to choose headless, the shrimp comes in its full form; which is fine by me. But I know some people prefer shrimp without the head on. I'd like to add this place has very reasonable prices for their boils; compared to a lot of their competitors Ie. Boiling crab. The boil it's self was a 4/5 with the house sauce and all the added sides. The shrimp were cooked to perfection and wasn't overcooked. I've had a love and hate relationship with SJ crawfish for at least a decade -- mostly because of their service. The servers can be extremely rude and for no reason, but I try to be tolerable and understanding. It's no wonder there is such high turnover because I never see the same service staff twice. Anyway, I think these guys recently had a change in ownership because the food tastes better than what I can remember. During our most recent visit, our party of 3 ordered an entire spread of crawfish, clams, shrimp, garlic noodles, raw oysters, fries, etc. and just went in. You can elect for your choice for sauce, and spice level -- and add any preferred extras like corn, sausages, and potatoes. The sauce and flavors have drastically improved compared to previous dine in experiences. This would be a good choice for a Cajun crawfish and seafood boil treat, but I can't stand on the service you'll receive -- hit or miss. Bonus: bring your own seafood dipping sauce. Holy crap. My friend and I came here last week to try the crawfish because it was one of the few places around that had fresh crawfish. We didn't like the sauce flavors as much as other places, however the crawfish tasted clean. So we ordered 6 pounds tasting a little bit of each of the different sauces and landed on the one that we liked. We decided to come back tonight with our partners and kids for dinner. There was a misunderstanding between the staff, and it resulted in them charging us for two extra pounds of crawfish. Sidenote, if you buy 5 pounds of crawfish you get 1 pound free. So we ended up ordering 12 pounds of crawfish expecting to pay for 10 pounds. We were charged for 12 pounds of crawfish and for some reason given one free pound of shrimp which is a lesser value. When we let them know that there was discrepancies in our bill, they argued and ultimately made us stay for an extra 20-30 minutes while the owner yelled at everybody (including us). It was an incredibly awful experience. We still tipped the 18% table fee for large parties, but part of me wanted to decline paying for that and just give the waiter cash because we felt bad for him. We had a feeling the owner was going to make him pay somehow. Ultimately, what we think happened: when they gave us our order, it was missing 2 pounds of crawfish so we let them know that the 2 pounds of crawfish were missing and somewhere between telling our waiter and the kitchen, it was misconstrued as we were ordering two more pounds of crawfish. So between that and giving us shrimp "for free" instead of the crawfish for free, our bill was noticeably larger. At one point the owner was claiming we ordered 3lbs of shrimp too. Then realized his own order tickets and receipts did not align on that (we only ordered 1lb Shrimp). In the end, we spent nearly $400 there for dinner and it really felt incredibly ridiculous to have to stand there and argue with the owner as well as watch him just yell at his entire staff over this discrepancy. The first time we came, the owner was not particularly attentive or nice in terms of service, but we just chalked it up to it being an Asian restaurant. We are Asian so we're kind of used to it. But this was next level insane in terms of behavior. I started to get loud with him a little too before I ended up just needing to leave because my kids had to go to bed. I totally get margins aren't great and perhaps he's had issues in the past with customers being shady but that was definitely not the case here and due to this, we won't be back. FOOD: The garlic noodles are good, and the crawfish are clean. The rest is pretty standard (fries) or subpar... like the wings -- they were tiny and stuck together. The calamari was bland and pale. The service was fine and we decided to split a combo 2 (between 2 people), plus garlic noodles. Everything was so good and altogether was more than enough food. I know the shambalang is a recommended sauce, but it just wasn't my style. I want the savory and heat without too much sweetness. It was nice trying the three different sauces tho. I came back three times to find it. - House Special: fine, but not it. - 49ers: better, still not it. - Shambalang: THIS IS THE ONE. Ladies and gentlemen, jackpot. This was the perfect amount for us to share! We tried out the 49ers sauce, which was packed with garlic! Though it was advertised as sweet, it was actually quite savory and buttery. Pretty tasty! This place used to be a solid 5 stars for me!! Throughout time, it's slowly decreased due to SJ Crawfish cutting corners and/or them serving not so quality foods. With today's purchase, it only solidifies SJ continuing to plummet overall.... My guy decided he wanted crawfish to celebrate Father's Day and we made sure to call in advance to confirm the business having LIVE, FRESH crawfish. I ordered in advance for take out and was told the food would be ready within minutes. 4lbs of crawfish & 2lbs of shrimp later... we are left with a handful of dead crawfish. Now, I get that things happen and not all crawfish can be guaranteed to be fresh BUT!!! This is unfortunately the 2nd time we've had take out where the same exact thing happened. When we dined in, this was not a problem. 1 star because there seemed to be some shady stuff going on. Delicious seafood boil without the wait! We were able to walk in on a Friday night. SJ Crawfish has a lot of seating and they turn over tables efficiently. The crawfish were some of the largest I've ever seen. We ordered 1lb crawfish and 2lb shrimp but I saw on the menu that there are special combos such as Combo #3 (2lb crawfish,1lb shrimp, 2 corn, 2 potato, 4 sausage) for only $40.99. For the sauces we tried the House Special and the Shambalang. The House Special was my favorite out of the two since it was super garlicky and buttery. I didn't like the Shambalang because it just tasted like mostly lemon to me. WARNING: the spicy is actually pretty dang spicy. I was definitely sweating. Found this place nestled in a little plaza close to my bfs house. We were surprised to find a seafood boil place so close! We were happy to find that they had fresh crawfish and relatively similar prices to other places around the area Upon walking in, there were only a couple other people there so we got seated right as we got through the door. At the table, they lay out the butcher paper, give you gloves and a bib, as well as a paper plate + lemon & pepper. Not a lot of paper towels and tissues. We ordered the combo #3 (medium spice, house special sauce), which was 2lb freawfudt, 1 lb shrimp? 2 corns and 2 potato, 4 piece sausage. We also got Cajun fries. The fries got there first and we had a few bites before the seafood came out. The crawfish were pretty big, I was able to get s little meat from their claws. Not super worth to get the claw meat, but can try. The shrimp and crawfish were cooked well and had a nice bite to it. The sauce was delicious. I enjoyed it a lot -- had chunks of garlic and such but still saucy. It was flavorful and not toooo oily and had a sweet savory taste. The medium was not spicy , and this is coming from someone who can't handle spicy stuff too much. The potatoes were enough per person. Small potato. The sausage was not a sausage but it was like a hot dog quality. I've had better but next time the sausage not worth getting. This was good enough for the both of us. We finished the combo but we only finished about half the fries We were so stuffed by the end of dinner There are two bathrooms but the sinks are inside, so if you only want to wash your hands, you still have to go in. Been going here for years and this was my favorite place for crawfish or seafood boil. Their "SJ Style" sauce is the best I've found in San Jose. With that said, management here is the worst--unprofessional and unethical. They messed up my order big time and instead of giving me 2 lbs of clams and 1 lb of mussels, they gave me shrimps and maybe 1 lb of clams. Disclaimer: I am allergic to shrimps. It was a pickup order on a rainy day and I called them back to let them know if they could just refund me my money so I don't have to drive back in the pouring rain since I don't live nearby. They said they don't have that option (lies) and that I have to come back with the food to get it corrected. I asked to talk to a manager, they told me the manager is busy. I said I'll wait, to which they said "he'll call you back." Obviously, the manager avoids confrontations. My husband predicted they won't call me back, he was right. First of all, If I owned a food business and a customer tells me they are allergic to something I sold them that they are not supposed to eat, I'd probably pee in my pants. What if it was a severe allergy that could cause an anaphylactic reaction? The restaurant would be liable. I'm just shocked that the manager at SJ Crawfish did not give a flying fox about food allergies and he did absolutely nothing to rectify the situation. Basically, owner/manager doesn't give a hoot about consumer health and safety. Mind you, I didn't ask for anything unreasonable either. I asked for my money back because I didn't order what they sold me. And I refused to go out out of my way in bad weather just so I could bring the food back to them for a mistake that I did not make. This was my first time trying a seafood boil and I was super impressed by the quality of the food and sauces here! My friend and I got one pound of shrimp in SJ sauce and one pound of mussels in 49ers sauce along with a side of garlic noodles. The 49ers sauce was savory, buttery, and garlicky while the SJ sauce was tangy with cajun spices. As other reviews here mention, the garlic noodles are 100% a must-try! Service was super fast and we got our water refilled multiple times. What we ordered ended up being much more than enough for two people, and we even had some leftovers to take home. It's a small place, during dinner time you may need to do takeout, but after you taste the food you won't mind going through any inconvenience to have it again. Sauce/spice options are robust and flavorful, and true to their descriptions. Really, if you love seafood (not just crayfish) you'll enjoy this spot. I ordered the combo #2 which is 1 lb of crawfish, 1 lb shrimp, 1 lb clam, 2 corn, 2 potatoes, and 4 sausages with the house special sauce with the spicy spice level. The house special sauce was okay but it was a bit salty for me personally and I didn't find it spicy at all. I usually get seafood boil from Claw Shack but it was closed on the day that I wanted to get it, so I went to SJ Crawfish instead. When I go to Claw Shack, I usually get the shambalang sauce which I like better than the house special sauce at SJ Crawfish. Even though combo #2 has 3 lbs of seafood, I'm not sure if the weight is really accurate since I usually order a 2lb combo from Claw Shack that lasts me 3 meals but the 3lb combo here only lasted me 2 meals. Overall, I still prefer Claw Shack. I would be interested in trying the shambalang sauce here to compare it to the one at Claw Shack but I don't know if I'd want to order the combo here again since it doesn't really seem worth it. read more
