We were super excited to try Situ Taco as we see it all the time while we're visiting other retaurants and when we're at the market so we made sure to carve up some time and pop in. It's a funky looking little place, where you order at the counter and they tell you pretty much everywhere, that you need to take out those darn toothpicks before munching down loooool We got the Two Tacos and Beans and Rice Combo and for the Tacos we got Hashwe 5/5 which is the minced beef stuffed one the Papas 4/5 which had garlicky potato, it did get a bit monotoned after a few bites but it does have great flavor and the Spicy Cauliflower 4/5 again great flavor just needed a little extra something to get it over that line. This was very unexpected. We walked in because we were hungry and didnt know what to eat for lunch; and we thought this was a really neat spot. The whole set up is very unique w/ the bar in the back; and the place has really cool decors. Service was good and the staffs were great as well. Plenty of seating inside and outside. What we got: Taco plate (4/5) We never had a deep fried crunchy tacos before and more so that its a fusion of two cuisine. I think it was good; and giving me a similar feeling of eating taquitos. I had lunch here after strolling through the farmers market and ordered their two taco and soup combo plus a breakfast taco bc why not?? LOVED the soup of the day which was a vegetarian lentil soup. Nothing stood out good enough to make it a must visit when in the area however I do want to try their nachos as I have heard good things about them. I recommend at least 3 tacos or one of the combos if you're hungry because they're on the smaller side. The staff were bright and bubbly folks who answered questions and made great recommendations. You have to order the food at the counter and bus your table. And they will serve you. So this is not a full service restaurant. The staff was friendly and courteous. I will definitely go again. We have eaten there a few dozen times, bringing pals visiting the city, going literally every time we play a show on the strip-- everyone loves them. The tacos are my favorite, but the queso is dank as helllll making the nachos another fab dish. My partner loves the burritos and quesadillas, though I-- a lover of the crunch --cannot speak for them myself. Are there toothpicks in the tacos? Yes! Not only are these two, structural-support toothpicks clearly visible, there are signs all over the shop about not eating them, and whoever runs your food out mentions them to the table every time. Even the merch / tee shirts tell you to watch out for the toothpicks. Its like the toothpick in a club sandwich, or the stick in a corn dog: you kinda have to want to eat it to end up with it in your mouth, ya know? Are the tacos greasy? Also yes! They're deep fried! That is what happens when you put any pouch-style food in a deep fryer: if it is not perfectly sealed, as it will not be with a toothpick, it'll get some oil inside. If you're not into oily food, maybe deep-fried tacos just aren't for you? As for the folks bashing the service: its standard counter service. If you want table service-- someone to wait on you, come to your table for more than just a drop off, etc --this place isn't for you. I worked in kitchens for two decades. Vegan spicy cauliflower tacos are so good!! The slaw side that comes with them is also vegan and delicious. They typically have two rotating soups on offer, with one that can be vegan (often default is vegetarian with like a dollop of yogurt on top). The first time I got the soup it was too spicy for me, so the next time I asked how hot it was and they were very helpful in gauging it! It was like a curry lentil and the right level of spice for me. They have a burrito special on weekdays! Haven't tried that yet bc I like the tacos a lot. The egg taco was also great, fairly standard but jucier and a bit more flavorful than what I find elsewhere. I live them emphasis on not eating the toothpicks. It is stupid but then you see them hiding in there and have to laugh at how many people probably do stab themselves. I would have liked more filling than just meat, but it was still really good...reminded me of an empanada in a lot of ways. Nachos were my favorite. The chips look like local fried tortilla pieces, but they were crisp and crunchy from a real fry and not those dense baked things you see elsewhere. Super friendly counter service. Walk up and order at the counter. Sounds simple enough, but the decision making process was tough. I wanted one of everything. Although I didn't get that, I did get some very delicious food. The papa taco was filled with flavorful creamy potatoes. The crispy taco offered a delicious balance with the creaminess of the filling. Of course since I lived most of my life in Austin, I have to order queso when I see it on the menu, even in Seattle. It's not often I write a review fairly quickly after visiting a place, but this place deserves it. Ever seen the movie ratatouille? I mean, yes, it's about a rat in a restaurant. After my first bite of the taco, I wasn't in the restaurant anymore, I was suddenly a kid in my grandmas kitchen, the quesadilla took me to my mom's kitchen as a boy. The service was efficient and the guy behind the register was very friendly with his service and gave us good recommendations. The menu seems basic but it's basic Mexican fare with a touch of "Líbano". The setting was very old school Mexican and I loved the atmosphere. Plus, the music was on point. Love this new taco spot! Especially the soups, which are made from scratch on a regular basis. They were perfect on a cool, damp day. I also had the taco trio, which are very unique. The tacos are served crispy and fried, closed with toothpicks. The flavors were delicious. I loved the variety, especially the chickpea cauliflower taco. The soups were quite spicy, but so good. Like most of you, I've been to more shitty Mexican restaurants than good ones and I can count on two hands the number of tacos I've ingested that ranked two thumbs up. I don't expect much ... Flavor, quality of the ingredients, and (in my case) crunch. Me, I love me some crispy tacos ... LOVE crispy tacos ... and they are so damned hard to find. What makes Lupes special? Their hybrid Lebanese/Mexican take on the lowly taco. They offer three options: Meat, potato, and cauliflower. I had the meat and potato and loved them both ... Situ Tacos was a strange experience for me. The place is really cute and small, so be prepared to sit close to other diners. The interiors carry a personal touch as there are pictures of, I'm guessing, the owners family on the walls. Service was just normal. The table service here is minimal, as you only see a server when its time for them to bring your food. To order, you go to the register and there are plastic menus to the right of you as well as a large one painted on the wall. Food-wise, everything was either just ok or underwhelming. Some of the items, I felt were imbalanced, for example the slaw. It was good, but there was a ton of coarse pepper running all through it which made the bite harsh. Make sure to use the toothpicks they put in the tacos to pick the pepper out of your teeth. They only offer 3 varieties of tacos here and they are all deep fried and held together with toothpicks, so be careful. Pick those out before you bite! The best taco to me was the potato one. The potatoes inside are creamy and seasoned well. If I ever came back, I would just eat those. I was not impressed with the other 2 (Lebanese browned beef and cauliflower). The description of the beef taco sounds exotic and exciting, but it is just under seasoned ground beef. Nothing special. The cauliflower is spicy and a great vegan choice, but all I could taste was vinegary heat and nothing else. The margaritas, are just ok and will not be the best you have ever had. What is really cool about this place is the bar. I didn't visit when I was last there, but it's tucked away in the very back of the restaurant and looks like a chill place to socialize and drink. The deal: **two tacos and a beer for $9.** That's what I ordered, and I made sure to mention I wanted that specific offer. Yet somehow, my bill came out to $12. I suspect the deal applies to a **pony Modelo**, but I was served a regular one. The bartender insisted all beers were on happy hour pricing, which--okay, fine--but just give me what's on the menu. Whatever the deal is, stick to it. As for the tacos, they were fried--something I wasn't expecting. I tried both the **potato and beef**. The potato taco? **Absolute perfection**--great texture, full of flavor, just delicious. This new spot in Ballard has unique crunchy tacos! The exterior is a fun bright pink with a spinning black rose sign. They have a patio in the front and inside seating. The tacos have different fillings stuffed in a tortilla which are sealed with toothpick then are deep fried. You're supposed to remove the toothpick before eating. Instead of a robust delicious open taco filled with delish meats, they serve small fried 4" tacos held together with nearly buried toothpicks that you have to pull out and get greasy to do it. OK, still fun ... maybe. The do offer an interesting take on meats, but they are far from what we'd expected. Still, they are oK if you don't care for traditional tacos. THey are more like Empanadas. The waitstaff are cool, rushed, and unfortunately the comms between them and kitchen have been spotty meaning you may not get what you order every time. But they will fix it... eventually. So YES to fun and experimental, great prices and good drinks. Not-so-much for high expectations of the most tasty Mex around. Stopped by at 5:45 on a Sunday - just in time for happy hour! This is a lovely little taco joint and a welcome addition to the Ballard neighborhood. Type of cuisine: Mexican with an interesting, fusion flair. "My Situ, (Arabic for Grandma), Delores Flores, was half Lebanese and half Mexican. She raised me in the kitchen cooking, since I was 3 years old. Learning how to make and sew these tacos, was a rite of passage for me when I was young, and I've been doing it ever since. The original crunchy taco, the tortillas are initially fried, then stuffed, and sewn together with toothpicks. Then they're pan fried to a golden crisp and are delicious. You can fill them with whatever toppings of your choosing, (I recommend guacamole and pico de gallo). People have contacted me after 20 years of distance to ask about my tacos. This shit is no joke." Ambiance: We dined in the street-parking-made patio space, where small tables and benches hosted a couple of other dining pairs. Inside, the entry is on the smaller side, with order counter to the left, and booth seating to the right, extending far back, a long rectangular-shaped establishment with fun, colorful, vibrant decorations. For families and those with friends/children who are opposed to off-color verbiage, perhaps consider staying outside or avoiding this place altogether, as the decoration, menu and displays are full of it. Came here for breakfast on a Saturday to grab a breakfast burrito! Got a pork burrito, and they ask if you want it with the salsa on top to make it a wet burrito. We didn't but did get the salsa (choice of red or green) on the side. They also give another salsa with the burrito that's a bit sour but good! The burrito is pretty filling with eggs, cheese, guac, potatoes, and meat. Pork was super tender and flavorful but a bit too oily for me.
