My wife and I couldn't believe what was posted by other "yelpers," and since we were in the neighborhood, we decided to stop by and inquire. And it's true: the hostess told us that an 18% "service charge" is automatically added to every check; the fee goes to the parent company and is not considered a gratuity. A tip would be expected in addition to the service charge. And it's also true that this information is not printed on the menu nor is prominently posted anywhere that we could see. We did not stay, and we plan to boycott this place until they stop this "bait and switch." read more

We arrived on a Thursday evening and the restaurant was incredibly packed, so definitely make a reservation if you're planning on going. If I were to rate the drinks alone, it would be a 5-star yelp experience. Something about that burnt pineapple margarita will bring me back here for happy hour. Now to the food! The chips were insanely salty, and after I took my first bite, I cringed. You have to dip it generously in either the salsa or the other sauce (that I can't recall the name of) in order to eat said chips. The guac, on the other hand? I could eat that all day everyday, if I had the metabolism of my younger years. The yuca fries were also good, and I would buy the sauce that comes with them (if they sold it by the bottle). I've been three times thinking the service will get better each time, and it actually gets worse. I can only talk on behalf of the bar area though. It seems as if none of the bartenders or staff look out for each other (it's as if they cannot do additional work, even when their coworker goes on break - so expect no service for 30+min if your waitress goes on break during the duration of your meal). You have to flag someone down for even a greeting, and you may even have to ASK to pay your bill (which I had to as no one grabbed my card and check from me for an additional 20+min). It's sad because their drinks are somewhat decent and they are in a good location, but I just can't get myself to support a business the employees clearly lack interest in. read more

Don't fall for the "Happy Hour." Servers pretend it doesn't exist and the "$5" Margs are just the Marg Mix, no tequila. They count out the nachos so you do not get more than 6-8 chips. I was there for happy hour; around our second round of drinks my girlfriends and I see a mouse, we freaked out but we tried to keep it cool and quiet and just tell the manager, the manager acknowledges the problem and apologizes, we continue ordering drinks and food, not a big deal, by the 3-4 round the mouse is all over, I mean like all over the bar area, ran over someone's shoe, and running all over the place, that mouse was having a blast, but my table was not, so at this point we ask for the check and very politely tell the hostess ''Leo'' that they should take care of the issue, the table next to us see the mouse too and bring it up to his attention, Leo instead of calming us (5 scary cat girls lol) he gets defensive and tells us there's nothing he can do because the "door is open" I said I've been to a lot of restaurants where the doors are open and the mice don't roam around like they own the place, overall, he was so rude and confrontational. He could've at least acknowledge that our experience at Sinigual was less than desirable and give us peace of mind that the next time around it won't happen, he just say, ''honey nothing I can do''. No one likes deception, especially when it comes to dining. So when you see a scoop of guacamole on the plate, one would assumed that 100% of the scoop would be guac but alas, 80% bottom part is in fact a bed of lettuce. And that's only the tip of the iceberg (no pun intended). We were seated reasonably quickly. Waiter comes by with menus and right off the bat suggests we order the steak nachos. So we thought, 'Wow, it must be that good if he really goes for it'. Thus, began the deception mentioned above. 14$ for a plate of nachos? Must be pretty good right? Imagine our surprise when he plops down a plate of 8 chips. 8 chips! That's a $1.75 PER chip and no, the ingredients on top did not add that amount of value. Plus, the included scoop of guacamole, as mentioned above, would be more accurately described as a scoop of lettuce with some guac topping. This was obviously the moneymaker for the restaurant and why the waiter wanted us so badly to order. Oh, and also unlike most Mexican restaurants I know/go to, there were no complimentary chips and salsa. We would have to order the 15$ guacamole appetizer if we wanted them, we were tersely informed by the waiter. Instead, we received 4 tortillas that came with 2 salsas and some sort of lime butter. No refills. Even though the entries took about 45 minutes to come out after our sad nachos and the waiter came by to refill our waters a couple of times, he just simply removed the tortilla holder. Finally entrees arrived. Nothing to write home about. Lobster quesadillas barely had any lobster. Chicken Taquitos were fine. Neither were really worth their respective prices (22 and 17). All in all, the food is fine, service leaves much to be desired, but you really aren't getting your money worth for the amount that they are charging. read more

I really like the deals during happy hour, but the servers don't let you know when the hour is up and let you order 5 minutes after it ends to charge you full price. They don't give you the common decency to know that the time ended, and do nothing to rectify problems. Oh, Sinigual. So many conversations have been had in your walls. I used to work around the corner years ago, and remember when you opened your doors. First I came to escape the cubicle with my friends from work at lunch, then expanded to happy hours, and now, I don't work in the area anymore but I still come back for your delicious food!! Think of this place as Dos Caminos with better food and less pretension. Highlights include: -The Cadillac margarita which is ON POINT and they can even make a mean "skinny" version that's delish and has sugar-free sweetener instead of agave sugar. -It's also mandatory to get the table side guacamole as an appetizer. Fresh avocados are used that are never overripe, and they can make it mild, medium, or hot for you. Medium has JUST enough of a kick on the back end for me. Love it. Everything that I or my friends have ordered here has been great and comes out hot and fresh. I usually order the fajita salad with steak, which is so good. I've also had the Mexican Chopped Salad with chicken and corn, and cotija cheese, and it's so good as well. A friend of mine will not go without ordering the Chicken Tortilla Soup, which he swears by. They also have great specials all the time, which you can't go wrong with. Keep it up, Sinigual! So I would first like to say that I've been to Sinigual many times and I have always had a good experience from a food and service standpoint. Therefore, I'm sorry that I have to write this review, but the last time I went, despite giving a 20% tip, the server decided to add additional tip to my check. Because I was expensing the meal, I saved the receipt. I called the manager for a refund, and he claimed he took care of it, but two weeks later there was no refund processed. I had to call back again (wasting more of my time) to ask again. It is completely unacceptable to add additional tip to someone's bill in the first place and the fact that the manager did not process my refund when asked is ridiculous. It is fraud. My suggestion - if you do insist on eating here, only pay cash. It's very difficult to engage in fraud when you're paying cash only. read more

I was in New York City yesterday and I went to Sinigual with a group of friends. It was the first time I went to this restaurant and it will be the last!!! I ordered the roasted half chicken listed under the "Simply Grilled" section on the menu. This dish is $28 . Waiter tells me that this dish is ala carte and any sides were extra. $28 bucks for chicken. One would think it would at least come with a scrawny dollop of vegetable or miserly tablespoon of rice.... or certificate of authenticity for that price ! NO!! But wait....it get's better!!! The waiter brings me the chicken. The plate has ONLY two 3 inch wide pieces of chicken with a thin slice of radish on each piece....THAT'S IT!!! Where's the rest of what was supposed to be half a chicken you ask?? AWOL! It certainly wasn't on my plate. The plate had 1/4 of the half chicken advertised on the menu! The remaining 3/4 was missing in action. $28 for two 3 inch chicken pieces. I asked the waiter where was the rest of the half of chicken . He gave me a dopey smile to match his equally dopey response which was that he didn't have an answer. Furthermore, the taste of the chicken, the little that was of it, wouldn't merit the James Beard Foundation Award for culinary excellence for the price of $28 to be justified . Look, I know decent restaurants in New York , particularly in the mid and upper east side, are pricey and there's a cost to eat in ambiance, but Sinigual is an overrated ripoff. Add to the fact that it was a hot day topping 87 degrees and the restaurant indoors was stifling with minimal air conditioning. My group asked the waiters 4 times if they could do something about raising the air conditioning a bit . The waiters smiled and pretended to placate us by giving a poor impression that they would address the request. I won't be going to Sinigual in future as it failed to be a restaurant of choice. I'll also alert everyone I know to avoid this restaurant...unless they're interested in an expensive thrill up their legs by empty their wallets eating mediocre food. A suggestion to management : Change the name of this place from "Sinigual" to "Quedarse con Hambre Tontos y Robado" ( stay hungry and robbed suckers) ! I leave to Sinigual's imagination where they can shove their so- called "simply grilled" roasted half chicken........radish slices first! read more

It's maybe not the most romantic place, but totally cool! Great for big groups of friends. Lively and light atmosphere. Doesn't stay open too late but good for dinner. I couldn't decide between fajitas (which I looove) and a more healthy option of salad with mango salsa (which I'm also a fan of), and decided on the Tableside Grilled Fajitas Salad with Steak (romaine, sautéed pasilla chiles, onions, roasted fresh corn, fresh avocado, cotija cheese, jack cheese, pineapple-mango salsa tossed tableside with raspberry-tamarind vinaigrette) which had both :D Very very large and filling dish, and pretty good! :) Came here another time with my MathCamp friend Alvaro - and really really love it! Portions are huuuge and not too expensive :D Got the Barbeque Chicken Tostada salad (grilled chipotle-tamarind barbecue chicken breast, romaine, black beans, jicama, tomatoes, jack cheese, tortilla crisps with quemada-barbecue ranch dressing over a crisp red chile tostada) and it was so large and completely delicious!! Amazing atmosphere. Great food. The only thing I'd pick on is service. When we first came in we were seating for a party of 5, but due to some internal conflict, we downsized to a party of 3. Best decision we made. We were instantly greeted by a food runner with tortillas and sauces. Must say I devoured them tortillas because I love bread *oprah voice* the brown sauce? Was great, just my type. I order the chicken fajitas (came with more bread ayeee) and it was the most succulent thing I've had this year. My other guests, they ordered a shrimp fajitas and a combo platter I believe and it was just amazing. I'm talkin picking off each other's plates, offering each other food like we were raised too well! (We were lol) You get what I'm saying though, the food was good! Drinks? Only one person at our table ordered drinks and she didn't like the (essence of a spicy margarita?) she had and opted for another one she appreciated more. Back to service? When we first sat down it was like the waiter was in a rush to take our orders and was a bit flustered. I'm a server so I know how one thinks when they get sat with a table of young people (oh they won't tip blah blah), but like I said I serve and there's no way I'm going out with friends, the foods this bomb and we aren't tipping at least 18%. Just wouldn't be right. However, he did check on us here and there, and shout out to the food runner for being so friendly to us and helping us out whenever we need our server. Definitely a great date night or girls night if you're craving Mexican cuisine. The lighting is just right and the overall look and feel of this place screams intimate imo. I coordinated a company Happy Hour at their bar area. In total, 22 people attended, and we enjoyed their happy hour drinks and bar foods for over 2 hours. Many of my colleagues loved their drinks and foods. Moreover, they liked how they could move around and talk with different groups of people....they have a good table layout. People who worked there...especially Aliona, who took care of our orders.... were very friendly, caring and helpful. Tina, who helped me planning the gathering was very accommodating. Came out for girls night out and my experience was great. The staff was very friendly, attentive (even while busy), our waiter Cesar knew the menu and the ingredients, the place is well kept, clean and the food was amazing. Didn't know what to pick so my waiter suggested I get the TRES MARIACHIS!! It had one steak taco, rice, beans, a burrito and chicken taquitos. It was soooo good down to the flavors and side sauces. The chicken taquitos was a bit dried but the sauce helped. We also got Gucamole which was made in from of us. That was really good as well. They ask you if you want it spicy, mild or no spice. This is a restaurant in my neighborhood. Yet I believe most diners either work in the area or are passing through. So it makes a very decent happy hours venue. But perhaps these days, that is all it manages. The bar is basic, but the seats are decent, with backs. The guacamole is excellent on each of the few times I have tried it. Except at happy hour, I find the drinks overpriced and the attention to cocktails is minimal. No one working the bar seems to be able to advise on different tequila, which is a shame. The beer variety is an old school-stale selection of Mexican and others. Even in Mexico, they've got some good new microbrews. Tecate and Dos Equis only go so far. My favorite dish was the chicken mole. but it was taken off the menu, then served as an occasional special, and now does not seem ever to be available. Mole is, to my mind, a very subtle dish, that requires the right formula for the spices. They had it, but it is gone. Recently I was there and had the carne asada for the first time. It's one of the most expensive meals on the regular menu. And this is why Siniqual gets a mere two (2) stars: that main course, one of the most expensive grill items, was terrible. The steak was approximately one-fourth inch thick, and cut to a perfect rectangle, about three inches by five. (Am I the only one to find that odd?) It was so tough that, thin as it was, it was hard to slice cleanly through with a knife and even harder to chew. The spices were strong, but it was really a one-note spicy-hot taste. A small ramekin or cup contained bland beans. The restaurant needs some rethinking. Taking up all that space, it can't possibly be successful with such offerings. I'd like to see it remain, but it needs a re-commitment to dining. read more

Delicious Mexican food right across from Grand Central. The prices are a bit high for the city, but it's honestly on par with other high end places in the immediate area. The coffee was delicious, and they have full coffee service all day. I had the choose your own combo with both types of enchiladas, the blue corn and the chicken. It was delicious and pretty close to the enchiladas I get when I'm home in Texas. The black beans were a nice touch, mostly because I don't like traditional charo beans. My friends got the fajitas and they were absolutely huge. You get fresh handmade tortillas and chips to start at the table, and two types of salsa.
