I found myself at Sinigual after work on a Friday to meet friends for food and to catch up. Midtown restaurants run hot and cold for me, however I love Mexican food - and since I had never been here before I was looking forward to checking this place out. Sinigual is very much a Midtown restaurant in the sense that it's large - walking in, you're greeted by a vestibule which gives way to the host stand and main dining area. There are tables scattered throughout the space with a bar to the left and the kitchen towards the back. The restaurant has high ceilings and a mostly blue color scheme with complementary dark colors and pops of design throughout the space. The aesthetics were inoffensive and comfortable. We were started with some flour tortillas paired with two different salsas and a compound butter. I found it interesting that they provided us tortillas in lieu of corn chips, and butter. I ended up ripping the tortilla into pieces and dip it in the salsa - was that the way to do it? Anyway, we also got drinks - I had the watermelon margarita which was pretty good. We then started with some chips and guac - we had the option of spice level (we ordered medium) and it was prepared tableside which was a nice touch. The guac was fine - I like it chunky and this was a little too smooth for my personal taste. For my main I ordered the tacos vampiros - these were chicken tacos on flour tortillas paired with jack cheese, guac, chiles, pico de gallo, salsa, cilantro, and cotija cheese (it sounds like a lot but it was really manageable). The tacos were served with rice and beans on the side as well as a sweet corn cake. The dish was pretty good - it had some spice to it but not too much that it was overwhelming (I can't do too much spice). The rice, beans, and corn cake were fine - nothing out of the ordinary but also not bad. For dessert we shared the fried ice cream which was pretty standard compared to other Mexican restaurants I've been to. Service was good, everyone was friendly and the food came out at a good pace. Overall, I didn't find anything too special about Sinigual - it was a very typical Midtown restaurant to me and while the food was good, I didn't find it noteworthy. Average place for a work dinner in Midtown. Service: I found the entire staff to be really friendly and always attentive. Great for a work night, and they accommodated our large party smoothly. People were the best part of the experience. Food: I would call this cuisine Latin "inspired." Don't expect authentic original recipes, but the flavors are there for when you are craving a spice like cumin on sizzling proteins or a nice bowl of table-made guacamole. Sinigual gives off fancy vibes!! My friends and I were dressed pretty nice, and one of them came from work so they were in their work clothes. But if I came in any more casual I would have felt out of place. The service was great throughout the night. They took our drink orders, asked if we wanted refills, filled our waters, etc. The drinks - I got a moscow mule, my friend got beers - were decent. To start, we had complimentary flour tortillas (4) with some sides of salsas and butter. I liked the flour tortillas!! but it confused me later on. We started with some table side guac, which was fun to watch it being made by the table! Although the stand the server was using was too high for me (a short person lol) to see the bowl or anything happening at the stand-level, so that was kind of a bummer. The chips and guac were good (I actually wish the guac had more salt!!) For entrees, I ordered the chicken fajitas. My friend got the carne asada and for both of our dishes, there was an awkward amount of empty space in our plates. (see my pictures for the chicken fajitas). I had a piping hot plate of the sizzling peppers and onions and the chicken. The chicken was really good btw- perfectly cooked, but honestly missing some seasoning. Then I got another plate that had guac and pico de gallo, a bowl of beans, and then empty space. I think the space was meant for the tortillas..... I think. So that's where the confusion came in. If the tortillas was meant for the dish like the fajitas then I'm not sure why they would give that first thing at the table to munch on, especially at that point we had nearly finished the tortillas. My friend's dish, which I didn't get to take a picture of, also had a ton of empty space on the dish aside from the corn and meat, so I was wondering if it was missing anything too. My third friend, who is plant-based, ordered a plate of rice and beans for herself. I wonder if the server expected us to share that and use with our entree dishes. Otherwise I am left wondering if they left something off our plates. It just seemed odd! The onions were cooked so that it was caramelized, which is always tasty, but I think the dish overall could have used more salt and seasoning. The place does give off nice dinner/business meal vibes, but I wouldn't say it's my go-to place for Mexican food in town based on my experience. read more

Pretty nice Mexican restaurant offering quality Mexican foods and drinks in an aesthetic setting. I came with a large group so got to try out a bunch of their options. The Steak Nachos ($18) were my favorite, as each nacho was loaded with lots of melted cheese, steak, black beans, and pico de gallo. I also liked the Sampler Platter ($27), which not only included these same steak nachos, but also some delicious and very cheesy quesadillas, tasty chicken taquitos, and some BBQ ribs. We also got these other chicken tacos, which were pretty good, although the soft taco shells did get slightly too oily and soft. For dessert, I got the Chocolate Flan Brûlée ($11), which was delicious. It's a larger portion size than the photo makes it seem, which lots of creamy chocolate flan, with a nicely caramelized sugar crust - a tasty Mexican spin on the traditional creme brûlée. While all the food was good, I do think that the food / drinks here are slightly overpriced. Sinigual has a nice interior with some interesting lighting / decor and a colorful theme, complementing the fun atmosphere. I actually sat with my large group in the outdoor area, which is fairly nice. The staff here are all very friendly, helpful, and attentive. The service speed was pretty quick. Overall, I think Sinigual is a great place to come for Mexican food and drinks, especially with a larger group of people. While it might be slightly overpriced, I would still give it a solid four stars. read more

We came as a party of eight on a Wednesday night. I was not expecting the restaurant to be so big. It was full but never felt crowded. They had a good list of cocktails that were on the more expensive side at 18/drink. We got complimentary warm tortillas with 2 salsas and a delicious honey butter concoction. We shared 2 orders of the guacamole which they made by the table. It was a bit expensive for 17 dolllars, but guacamole is always worth it. You can get tacos, but i opted for the filet mignon enchiladas with shrimp entree. It was the more expensive entree at 37. My friend got the carne asada which was my second choice. Thankfully I didn't get it bc it looked really bare and not so good which he verified. Not a bad spacious option for big groups in around midtown east. read more

FRAUD! Went for dinner here on New Year's Eve for food and drinks with friends. We ended up splitting our bill. I left the waitress a pretty decent tip in cash considering it was holiday season. A week later I happened to look at my credit card statement just to find out that the waitress had charged me a 200% tip on my card. I reached out to the restaurant and their excuse was "waitress accidentally charged the full amount on your credit card"....how was that even possible? Considering we split the bill in three. Waitress clearly tipped herself a 200% tip and hoped to get away with it. If you do decide to go to this restaurant just keep your receipt and keep an eye on your credit card statement. The tableside guacamole was not, in fact, made tableside, but rather brought out already made after a lengthy wait. It was very unimpressive, clearly made from under-ripe avocados and lacked flavor. We did get the mild guacamole, but less spice shouldn't mean less flavor. I got the chicken quesadilla for my meal and they did accommodate my request to have corn tortillas instead of flour since I need to eat gluten free, which I appreciated. But they also lacked any real flavor and were just generally underwhelming. I got rice and beans on the side, and the rice was dry. The vibes were fine, I guess? Very corporate, not super cozy. Overall, I left feeling kind of off and disappointed. Plenty of better options for Mexican food in the city. read more

Hands down the best red sangria I have ever had...... after a long day of work it was such a great way to end my evening. The food was flavorful and I enjoyed my entire meal. This has to be the nicest Mexican restaurant I've ever been to! Located right in the middle of Midtown, very convenient, right next to Grand Central. We got their guac (prepared tableside) to share at the table. In terms of mains, highly recommend the Mexican chopped salad, which came with generous toppings. My friend took me to this restaurant. My first time here. I caught the tail end of happy hour on Wednesday. No reservations. The hostess told me to make a table available at 8 pm. The bar area was bustling til ending of happy hour. I guess they have a good drink. A $5 drink is trendy. Then, my friend came 10 min later and asked for a table; she said she would be ready at 7:30. The menu is a bit small. So, my friend wanted Taquitos for appetizers, but they don't offer appetizers but only part of a combination platter. Taquitos are assumably popular starters, but they don't offer a solo menu starter. The taquitos are all sold as a part of a more significant priced starter item, sample platter ($26), or combination ($22 for 2) My friend clearly said, "as a starter," we wanted a combination platter of Chicken Taco and Taquitos. Then, for entrees, Fajitas (steak for me, and chicken and shrimp for her) Then, all dishes were brought out altogether to the table at once. We were sitting small table. There was no way to fit all dishes on our table. If I had been there without my friend, I would have let them leave all plates, but she was livid. We got the manager involved and sent fajita back to the kitchen. She made sure the fajita would be freshly cooked. We conversed and enjoyed the meal, but the waiter constantly came and asked when we wanted Fajita. I guess the waiter was worried that we may have sent them back if they brought them out without our consent. But then, he shouldn't have asked us when we wanted to have a fajita. The waiter allowed us to dictate the timing of the food. All they had to do was just bring the starter first after we finish the starter, give us a few minutes, then bring out the dish. The food was delicious, but for that price and service (including hostess estimates on a wait time) Three-star Bravo! my friend. She was right to be livid. The potato's weren't what we expected - they were baby potato slices baked. (don't get if expecting fried potato's) For dinner, I got the combo, 1 carnita taco and the chicken taquitos. The chicken taquitos were small but so flavorful and good. Carnita taco was good, but didn't finish as we ate a lot. Meat was SUPER tender. One cousin got the shrimp fajitas- DELICIOUS, and the other chicken quesadilla and said it was good. Dessert we got the tres leaves and some caramel delish- DELICIOUS but so sweet. Overall okay experience but the negatives could be attributed to poor event planning. What we liked: - The food was great and the guacamole was tasty - The drinks were strong and tasted great - really found a balance between the two so we kept buying more What we didn't like: - There was an event for teens/young children and they had laid out a buffet-style spread for them in the center of the restaurant. However, they seated the event participants in the back which meant that they had to get up and go to the middle and there were servers being used essentially as bodyguards. Additionally, they were seating customers surrounding the buffet (including my party) which left our servers only checking on us a couple of times throughout the meal and they had cleared out table before we were finished - The guacamole was made in front of the table... but the person making it did not interact or even make eye contact. It just felt like we paid $17 for them to show us ingredients that totaled $5 for an "experience" that wasn't worth it All in all, the prices were steep for what they were offering. It's a super beautiful and huge restaurant, reminiscent of Maya Restaurant (they could possibly be brother/sister restaurants). The food and drinks are just okay. My best friend got his margarita on the rocks and I'm guessing it was good because he didn't say otherwise. You know how they say, 3 strikes and your out...well this one gets 4 strikes! With so many other restaurants in this area, I wouldnt waste my time or money going back! After checking in with the hostess we were seated in the back of the restaurant near a large party that was quite loud. The restaurant itself was relatively empty and there were tables available towards the front of the restaurant so we asked to move. We were met with what I can only describe as a major attitude from the hostess! Its not as if the restaurant was packed and there were no tables! STRIKE ONE After we were seated, in a different table, we had a very tough time locating our waiter throughout the meal, there were many times we had to flag someone down to just get a refill on water. STRIKE TWO The food - we ordered the tableside guacamole spicy. Yes, it was served tableside, BUT far from spicy, in fact, it lacked any flavor at all. When we finally located our missing waiter and informed him, he brought us back a small bowl of chopped jalapenos, which we then mixed into our tasteless guacamole. I guess thats what they mean by tableside - they should say "DIY Guacamole" and even with the peppers it was still lacking flavor. The fajitas we ordered didnt come out sizzling and were also lacking flavor --- if we didnt have to catch a train, we would have sent the food back! STRIKE THREE The meal wasnt bad enough but when we asked for the check we still had plenty of time to catch our train...BUT, it took forever to get someone to pickup our check, bring us our change AND we almost missed our train!
