I was actually a huge fan of bao boys and became a regular until they disappeared from the face of the earth :( I haven't given bao tao'n a try until recently when I found out they also served lobster Mac and cheese for a whopping $14. I kinda wish there was a smaller portion of it and maybe if the plate wasn't so long/rectangular it might be easier to transport home. But anyway the flavor of this was really good and it was filling! The lines was really long but as we got closer to pay and order. We kinda saw why the line had a hard time moving. Turns out the father was in charge of ringing people up and had a hard time with the credit card machine which led both people super frustrated (the cook that was probably the owner and the father the cashier). Luckily I wasn't in too much of a hurry so it was bearable but it was also understandable too. I haven't tried any of the baos but I think I'll stick to the Mac and cheese if I do see them out. My husband ate them cold a few days after since I had some left overs and devoured it.

COVID-19 UPDATE In…read morethis Age of COVID-19 people think I'm a "cheapskate", when it comes to food. My friends and family think I'm a "tightass" because they think I only buy food that is cheap. I admit that I do look for bargains but to be labelled a "cheapskate" or "tightass" are misleading and unmerited. For me, I think of myself as a "Food Investment Analyst" or "FIA", which sounds way better than "tightass" or "cheapskate." I hunt for value and "cheap" is only one of the evaluation components in my food investment analysis. Let give you an example of the difference between a "cheapskate" or "tightass" and a FIA. Times Supermarket Beretania has a food service area called Taste of Times. They sell a pre-packaged bento called "Donburi Fishcake" for $3.59. A cheapskate would look at their menu board and consider price first. A cheapskate would look at all the pre-made bentos and again look at price first. After finding the cheapest item, which would be the Donburi Fishcake which is prewrapped with a napkin and chopstick; they would ask the person behind the counter for two more napkins and two more chopsticks because they want something free. They would head for the self checkout station; pay in cash and take all the change. This is even if the change is two pennies. And for your information, cheapskates never pay with a credit card. A Food Investment Analyst on the other hand would see this Donburi for $3.59 and keep it in their mind. They would scan all the pre-made bentos and then look at the impressive menu board on the back wall of where Taste of Times sells hot food. In their evaluation they know that pre-made means cold and menu board means hot. They also know the difference between "Plate" and "Portion." Plate means includes choice of three sides and a drink (a can soda or bottle water). They would know that Times Supermarket is owned by Don Quijote and Don Quijote sells meals that do not include sides or drinks and DQ plate lunches sell for over $9.00. They also know that the menu board may not include the daily specials. The daily specials are posted on a paper menu taped on the right sneeze guard window and include additional "Plate" meal options. On Tuesday's the special includes Pastele Stew for $6.99. The FIA performs the mouthwatering test by picking up, looking and smelling the Donburi and then goes to the hot food section and ask the server behind the counter to lift the lid of the stew container so that they can see the pastele stew. If the FIA's mouth waters when looking or smelling the Donburi, they would automatically buy the Donburi because it's so cheap. But let's say the FIA's mouth doesn't water for both the Donburi and the Pastele Stew Plate. "Cheap" is then an evaluating factor; hot or cold is a factor; weight is a factor; sides are a factor; drink is a factor; taste is a factor. The final decision to purchase is multifactorial and more complex. Evaluation, experience, memory and an overall understanding of what is available at other food places in Honolulu are all part of the analysis by a professional FIA. A Food Investment Analyst mind is able to process all the evaluation points quickly and efficiently and come up with a "Best Value" decision. In this particular example, a Food Investment Analyst would buy the Pastele Stew Plate for $6.99 because it is a better overall "best value" for the price. In this example, I the Food Investment Analyst always order this Pastele Stew special every Tuesday at Taste of Times. I get one scoop brown rice and two scoops hot vegetables and a can of Diet Pepsi. The server assembles my Pastele Stew Plate and Saran Wrap the box and puts on a barcode sticker for scanning. I take the neatly wrapped Pastele Stew and drink to the self checkout station and scan the barcode on the wrap but do not scan the can soda. I would push "0" bags and insert $8.00 into the machine, pick up the receipt and leave the change. This explains why I am a respectable "Food Investment Analyst (FIA)" and not a "cheapstake" or "tightass." As a professional FIA, I highly recommend going to Taste of Times on Tuesday's and buying their Pastele Stew Plate for lunch or dinner. It is truly a great value and definitely a buy. It's like buying one share of Amazon for $2,000.00. P.S. You should also get their Fishcake Donburi for $3.59 and to overcome the "cheapstake" and "tightass" moniker, all you have to do is in insert $4.00 in cash into the self checkout machine and leave the change.

Holoholo Grill is a genuinely solid food offering located in the Paradise Palms food court…read more Holoholo Grill is sort of split up into roughly three sections, with a ramen bar, a musubi section, and the main cashier section where you can purchase their main entree bentos as well as cafe drinks. In the morning you will find their usual breakfast options (including musubi) in their main section, although I think around 10 or 10:30 is when they start to put out their lunch items and move their musubi to the musubi section. I am always impressed at the options they put out. There are certain staples like their breakfast items and musubis, as well as select lunch bento, such as the loco moco and garlic chicken, but then they switch up the menu every day; one time I got pork belly in a Chinese bun-style slider. I am always excited to try their hot food items. I also like to pick up dessert when it's seemingly rare and unusual, like their tiramisus. Over on the musubi section, if they are selling butter mochi, I find it very hard to resist. Also, if I need to stretch my budget, I have found the musubis to be both (relatively) cheap and filling. Holoholo is my go-to for lunch (I love the Garlic Chicken, Miso Garlic Chicken, Lechon Kawali, Pork Adobo, Meat Jun, etc.). I especially love the local vibes of the food; I have been able to try so much Filipino food here (so much so that I've had more Filipino food in 4 months than I've had in the prior decades of my life). One word of caution is that they have often been unpredictable with how much they salt their food. I have been (salt)burned a handful of times with how unpleasantly salty a dish was. This is infrequent, but it has happened at least twice for me.

Apparently they're known for their chicken- of which you can choose between original, garlic, ranch, spicy, furikake, or gravy. They get really busy so be sure to go early. People often order bulk orders too... and unfortunately they seem to take orders in rounds... So I stood 3rd in line waiting to order for nearly 40 min before they even took the first guy's order. Of course they must have taken a first round earlier as I arrived 30 min after they opened... My work day is quite busy and I'm impatient by nature so I did not appreciate standing around for 40 minutes just to wait to order. Then I hear her telling someone it's another 40 minutes for their food. I don't expect it to be quick to be honest, but would have wanted the opportunity to place an order. I was getting angrier and angrier by the second. They need to be more upfront and post on their truck that they take orders in phases so expect to wait 30min + to place your order. ESPECIALLY when you come downtown ... because majority of us are in the middle of our workdays and not able to spend our entire hour just waiting to order. It's inconsiderate and downright rude. I ended up walking away just as they were starting to take orders again because I don't want to support them and I don't have time to wait another 40 minutes when I've already spent over 45 minutes out of the office just waiting to order (plus my walk time). No food (especially heart attack inducing food) is worth that. Arghhh I can't recall the last time I've been so angry and irritated. I always say expectations are everything. Never be surprised by the price... The most generous portions I have ever seen for takeout poke!…read more I'm glad I took a chance on this little poke shop in Bishop square. With it being an assembly line-type poke place, I didn't have high expectations. Among the businesses in the area, this one is relatively empty so there was little wait. The worker was very efficient and friendly. You can select your base (rice, greens, or both), then fish, sauce, and additional toppings. I liked how they offer multigrain rice! I got a medium bowl with spicy minced ahi, which comes premade, and salmon with dynamite sauce. Medium bowls come with 3 sides, so I chose crab salad, ocean salad, and takuwan. Extra points for having takuwan because it's my favorite thing to eat with poke. When it came time for the sides, the worker pulled out a whole second bowl and proceeded to pile the container high with my chosen items. I ended up with 2 full bowls: 1 with fish and rice, and the other with sides. The quality of the food was about what I would expect for takeout poke, which is to say it wasn't super fresh but it was satisfying nonetheless. Because of the huge portions though, I only ate half and saved the rest for another meal. My experience was honestly a breath of fresh air compared to other places that portion out skimpy amounts of food.
