For one, the hours on the door don't nearly match the hours listed on yelp(close at 9:00pm). Today is Wednesday and on the door it says they close at 7:30pm. I waited until 7:02 to get out of the car and order so my food would be fresh at the latest time possible. At that time they were fully shut down. As you can see in the picture, it's completely dark with the "OPEN" sign off. Went to grab my phone and decided to take a picture which you can see is time stamped at 7:06pm. Terrible for people who thought they had dinner planned and terrible for the business who is losing out on money as I'm watching others drive up and leave after seeing they are closed. If you want to leave work early, maybe you should consider changing your hours. Or put on the door that you're not servicing anyone 30 minutes prior to closing. There should be no reason to be completely shut down and out of there 30 minutes before "closing time". I can't even say it was terrible service because I had ZERO service.

I had an appointment in Kalihi and had some time to kill. It was one of those hectic days and hadn't eaten lunch. It was 7pm. It's officially dinner time. I pulled into the parkin lot just past the Jack in the Box by Umi street. There used to be an Elena's there. There must be somewhere I can get a takeout.... My hunch was right. There was a Chinese restaurant on the right and Subway on the left. Subway was closed, and I didn't want to get ala carte, so I went to BBQ Mix, which was right in the middle. It's only 7:15 but it's really quiet in there. I walk up to the counter where I was greeted by a cheerful young lady. I decided to try the hamburger steak. I seated myself on the chair after ordering and I was glad I wasn't earning in... The chairs they had were wrought iron and hardwood and let me tell you, if you had told me that it was a medieval torchering device, I would have believed! This was the most uncomfortable piece of furniture my butt ever laid on! I was glad my order came up relatively quickly, as I was up and out the door. "Thank you, have a nice day!" she says, so I replied with a " You too!" I like that kind of employee-customer interaction. While waiting for my appointment, I pick on the plate. There's 2 scoops of rice, mac salad and 3 hamburger patties with brown gravy. The patties look handmade, not store bought. More points there. They are well seasoned and tasty. Very moist and tender. Macaroni for the salad wasn't overcooked, nor was it al dente, but pleasantly done. Slivers of carrots not only add color but give a bit of texture to the mac salad. The one thing that I thought might have been a mismatch was the jasmine rice. Jasmine rice does so well with ethnic dishes, but for me, it interfered with the subtle flavor of the brown gravy. Otherwise, it's a flawless plate lunch, but that's just my opinion. Later on though, I started to get that reaction... I don't know if it was in the patties or the gravy, but there probably were traces of MSG. I normally would've minused a star, but the value of the meal and the bubbly personality of the girl at the counter certainly is worth the high mark.

Support new local businesses! BBQ Mixed caught my attention because they had no Instagram page and no Yelp reviews. Curious, I drove to Kalihi to investigate... Here are my findings: 1. Free shared parking with Diagnostic Lab, Subway, and State Farm Insurance. 2. Located in the strip mall next to Jack In The Box 3. This new business opened last month (February 2021). The interior is clean, modern, and spacious! 4. The owners are from China. They learned English when they moved here! Service is attentive and efficient! 5. Hours of operation are 6am to 9pm daily (may close at 8:30pm on weekends) FOOD: since it was "Fish Friday", I got: *Mini Garlic Shrimp plate - five lightly battered shrimp. I was able to eat the shells! *Mini Garlic Ahi plate - a bit dry, but tasty *Mini Garlic Fish Filet plate - moist and tender! *Hamachi Kama - smokey with crisp skin and subtle miso flavor! My favorite! Note: each plate comes with rice and macaroni salad. -I also liked the accompanying lemon wedges and tartar sauce! -Drink refills are 50 Cents. I admire hard work, ambition, and entrepreneurial spirit! BBQ Mixed is an example of making dreams a reality. I will continue to support them and go back soon for the Happy Hour Steak Special and Daily Specials! Welcome to Kalihi, BBQ Mixed! Best wishes on your new venture! Thank you for your thoughtful gesture of opening the door for me since my two hands were full!

Formally another restaurant that was just ok when I last went, after seeing Nadine's post, I found that they just opened, and is a different restaurant from the last time I tried there. This place located in a complex next to jack in the box, with Hong nien, DLS and subway will now be my go to place when I'm in the area. Teriyaki plate- 4 stars - for $11.50, I got 3 large pieces of Teri beef and a heapful of soft white rice and Mac salad, although a little too much mayo for me, had taste to my liking (I usually can't taste mac salads from other places and tend to discard them). Chicken katsu - 4 stars - two slabs of cut chicken katsu. The sauce was more sweet sour sauce than the japanese katsu type, but was still good with the katsu. I didn't try the mixed plate and bbq burger, but my sons liked it. I gave this place a 5 star overall bc service was great, available parking, and the heavy lunch plates were both great in quantity and quality for the cheap price I paid. However, it's a bit hard to drive out from the parking lot because of all the cars parked on the street, limiting my view.

Let me tell you that this is a hidden gem in Kalihi and you should check them out. We dropped out for service at Nissan and walked to find a place for breakfast. I thought this place only serves lunch plates but we went in because it allowed you to eat inside. The menu is extensive! I ordered the breakfast plate and it came with rice meat ( two slices of bacon, two links and two Portuguese sausage-that aaa already a lot of food. We ordered a side of pancakes which the lady warned us they were huge (yes they were!!). I opted for the French toast and it was yummy. Pancake was homemade and they served it with Aunt Jemima syrup! Who uses this expensive syrup??? This place does!! Serving is huge so come hungry!!

Hubby, daughter and I came here for lunch. It was our first time trying it out. We used to drive by here all the time but never tried it until today. As we walked in, we ordered and then sat at a table. The soda machine fountain wasn't working so the lady didn't charge for the combo hubby had with a drink. I decided to get the Arizona green iced tea which is always my favorite when restaurants only have canned drinks. For my entree, I got the chicken fried noodle. This was so much for a plate of fried noodles. Plenty of pieces of chicken and this was filling. I managed to finish the whole plate. I drank my Arizona green iced tea. So refreshing. The nice lady brings your food over to you. There's no table service so you basically toss your container in the trash. They recycle the cans since I saw the cans above the trash. My food was delicious and filling but a tad greasy. Not bad overall. I would come back to try other items on their menu.

    Beef broccoli

I got the beef broccoli plate again and it wasn't as much as the first time. In fact, it was half the amount. I'm not exaggerating and there was too much rice portions. Service was good and the place was still clean. But i was bummed that the entree portion was so little. It wasn't as tasty either. Boohoo.

Am very disappointed, I told cashier I gotta feed 10 people and I ordered pan shrimp, katsu, rice, friend noodles. Rice and noodles was good amount, but katsu and shrimp I was like woah! I know it's hard times but damn y'all hustled me bad lol.

This is the first time I have tried this restaurant. The restaurant is bright and spacious, and the price is good. The mini size BBQ chicken I ordered looked like a large portion, it was worth it, and it tasted delicious. There are a lot of parking outside, it is very convenient, it is a good choice for this store.

I ordered on doordash 6 party size food and they surprisingly got it done in one hour! I was very busy in the morning and didn't pick it up till couple hours later, they were very nice to update the status on doordash and call me. The teriyaki beef and the charsiu noodles were super good in flavors. I loved the vegetables spring rolls and the sweet sauce. The lemon chicken wasn't my favorite because I personally don't like it. It was crispy and the chicken cut size was good, best taste to the lemon chicken was the sauce its sweet lemon taste makes it so good. I will come back again especially for the noodles.

    BBQ chicken

Amazing food as always! It's a must have, multiple times, when I'm back on island! The service is always great, and friendly. Nice and clean place. Would recommend any meal!

There's no meat at all just batter

Ordered the pork cutlet but there no meat at all! None! Just all batter! I feel robbed

Regular bbq chicken- great amount of chicken, 2 scoop of rice and 1 scoop of macaroni salad

Super satisfied with the bbq chicken, the price is really good. 11$ for great amount of chicken, 2 scoop of rice and one scoop of macaroni salad! It feeds me and my boyfriend before our flight. We demolished it in 5 minutes ! Delicious & recommended

I ordered a chicken cutlet plate. The outside is crispy but the chicken is very tough and stringy. It was also salty.

The guava bar was delicious and flavorful and just crumbles in your mouth! Definitely one of the better guava bars I've tried. Love how crumbly it is. The salmon belly was delicious OMFG. It looks so simple and straightforward but that sht is so flavorful. It is crispy and yet soft on the inside. The salmon belly is cut into bite-sized pieces so I didn't have to worry about using a knife to cut it. I usually try salmon belly where it is usually seasoned lightly to bring out the natural flavor of the salmon, but Guava Smoked's salmon belly is just grilled in a way that makes the salmon sweet/crispy and still get traces of the salmon taste as well. It's definitely not your traditional Japanese-style way of cooking salmon belly but really just their own. I'd go back and get this again. Another thing too. I'd get this with beer. This would hit very hard with alcohol but because I don't drink I need a kombucha. The grilled salmon belly would go perfect with it. Cheers! Uncle was very helpful and kind when serving and if you dine-in he brings it to your table.

But came on a Monday before dinner time so it was slow. Lots of seating and open air flow. Direct parking is limited but street parking is available.

The meat is reasonably high quality, the banchan is generous (the last few times I went they even had poke as a banchan included with the meal), and the service is friendly. The "kimchee soup" is one of my favorite kimchee jjigaes on the island. Refills of meat flow generously out of the kitchen, unlike some other AYCE experiences where each subsequent order gets smaller and smaller until they finally cut you off because you've reached the time limit. I only have one gripe. While each table has a very powerful burner for grilling the meat, their universal approach is to prop up a tilted cast iron plate over the fire to grill on. It's propped at an angle so that the oil flows into a catch pan on the side. This usually means that the half of the plate tilted closer to the fire gets really hot, while the other half struggles to get hot enough and risks just boiling your meat. It also makes adjusting the fire a tricky process - if there's a lull between meats coming to your table, someone might come by and, understandably, turn down your flame. That's fine, but when the food does come out, it takes a long time to get the cast iron hot again. This doesn't stop me from coming back for more here, but just one thing I wish was better about an otherwise great experience. There is a parking lot out front but it is cramped and usually fills up. There is usually someone helping to guide parking, but when it's completely full there's only so much they can do. Street parking in the area can also be a little bit tricky.

This place makes their soondae in house as I can tell the difference with frozen soondae and non-frozen ones. Until I go to Korea to try the real thing, this is the best I can get. I definitely think they improved their recipe from the first time I tried it. The aunties here are still very nice but as always give grace because it does get busy here and one aunty would have to take care of multiple tables and party size as well. Overall I'll be coming here whenever I need my soondae fix!! If you haven't tried, definitely come and try! I still need to try the acye here with friends one day!
