Jun Special without the side veggies.
    Nani C.

The Jun Special (Chicken Jun, Meat Jun, and Shrimp Tempura) was pretty good to me. Are they the only ones that make Chicken Jun? That's the first for me. I guess I went the right time. It was slow so I sat inside to eat. A lot of take out/ phone orders though.

I wanted to try this place out after seeing a YouTube video on this place. Located off of Nimitz Highway, it is a small place in the same area that Mini Garden Express and Joe's Grill are located. A lot of parking, but depending when you go, the lot can fill up. Portions are generous and a set order of sides includes mac salad, Kim chee, bean sprouts, and sautéed cabbage. We got the spicy pork and fried mandoo plate. The pork was nicely flavored - a little heat, a little sweet, and the mandoo were big and stuffed with veggies and ground pork (or beef). Lots of choices and combos to choose from. We went around 6pm and the place was fairly empty so we got our food really quick. Not sure how long the wait is when they are busy.

So I'll start with the irritating. The person (owner I'm guessing) was an older gentleman and was just plain grumpy. The good. The mini spicy pork and fish jun were very good. When I sat down, I saw other items (soup) that I would have tried. We ordered just in time because the foot traffic was constant afterwards. Normally, I wouldn't go back for a w h i l e but the food was good enough to visit soon.

Ordered a mini BBQ plate. I was kind of upset of the amount of meat/protein or lack of it. I noticing company's trying to lessen portion sizes to save a buck now days. Probably won't be back anytime soon.

Great Mom and Pop's Korean BBQ place near work! I ordered their kalbi plate and Kim chee jiggae soup to go. Tons of parking in front of this place. Great place to get take out or sit in if you want (there's a few tables inside).

When my family wanted to get food here, I looked at the menu and I'm gonna be honest -- the pictures do not do this place any justice whatsoever. The pictures online, the menu, and location give off the perception of it being really cheap, but this place is great! Maybe it was what I ordered, but I love this place and I am definitely coming back! I ordered the Bi Bim Kook Soo (cold noodles with pork and veggies in a spicy sauce) and it was delicious! I haven't eaten something that quickly in a long time. it was cold and refreshing with a perfect balance of spicy and meaty pork goodness. Yum! This is what I get for judging a book by its cover. Nimitz is the epitome of a delicious hole in the wall type restaurant. I almost didn't want to write this review because I wanted to keep this place my little secret.

    Chicken Tempura

I've only ordered the chicken tempura. It's delicious. Maybe one day I'll try something else u til then this is what I order. Air conditioned but small dining area. I think there's 4 table for dine in. I always order ahead and just pick it up. So far, every time it's ready so it's in and out quick service.

Given how much I loathe all the food options at HNL, it is a blessing because it lead me to Nimetz Bar BQ and I've never been the same since. For traveler's food, it checks off all the right boxes: copious amounts of Korean BBQ inspired meat, locally patronized, fair prices, and just outside of the airport. Each time I'm here, I debate on whether I should bring it on the plane and risk odorizing the cabin or swallowing down big portions in the small confines of a plane seat. Instead, I make this my final stop before returning my rental car. In the NY state of mind, it's most definitely walkable but a real drag if the weather sucks and luggage in tow makes for a bad combination. Speaking of combination, all the ones they have to offer are worth considering. Anything with grilled meat, some sides with a mound of rice is truly my kind of food. Their mahi mahi fish jun is super underrated and I think folks tend to sleep on their banchan, even if some complimentary sides of kimchi and potato salad don't initially feel that exciting. A really safe bet in terms of ordering is their mixed meat platter. It's got a little bit of everything they do well. I am admittedly more accustomed to eating Korean in more traditional settings, but this is more of a local Hawaiian's take. There is Korean on the menu, banchan plates, and a number of items ranging from their famous bulgolgi to pajun and mandoo. Combine all of that with mac salad and garlic rice and it's about as localized as can be. Their decor is best described as "the 80s are alive!" Make no mistake, this is comfort food to the max. The place is super small with only a handful of table can sometimes result in a wait. Otherwise it's a super unpretentious vibe and the customer service is great. Prices have crept up a bit over the years but for Honolulu, this is very affordable.

You know this place is authentic when you have bean paste dipping sauce and raw garlic slices. They are not trying to tailor to westerners. I really enjoy the Korean comfort foods! 4 stars for the food, soups, and ban chan, 5 stars if the service was great. Typical service you will get at a Korean spot but no complaints. Just gotta be patient for ban chan refills or if you need anything else, I don't expect much just happy that I get to have my Korean food. During this recent Saturday visit, I decided to go here for our late lunch, after hiking Koko Head Trail & Makapuu. It was about 4:30 pm, we were the only ones there, but it filled up pretty quick an and they do have many take out and Uber/Door Dash orders. My favorites here are the combo set, choice of soondubu (combination, kim chee, spam, beef, sausage, clam,) & either meat jun, fried mandoo, bulgogi, yellow corvina, seafood jun, or BBQ chicken. The combo use to be $20.55 my first time but now went up to $23.55, hence the increase, it is still a great deal, this meal comes with rice and 5 different ban chan. This combo was more than enough for the both of us. My favorite is the spam soondubu ( yes. who picks Spam right?! hehe) & the seafood Jun. Although it so hard to decide since all the choices are good, I will have to visit again for the other selection. The other half and I cannot eat an entire combo set by ourselves. I love the ban chan, especially the daikon & kim chee, so fresh and crispy! When I first dined here, I was surprise to see they give you a fresh egg to crack in your soondubu soup, I am use to the egg already in there. We always have leftover soondu soup which I take home and add to my Korean ramen the next day, so good! For the meats, the beef brisket and beef toro were the stars, but the beef chuck was slightly tough and dry. They were also out of bulgogi, which was disappointing. The pork had a really strong boar taint smell/taste, which completely turned me off from ordering any of the pork. We had to ask for more meat and banchan refills multiple times. There was usually a pretty noticeable lag before anything came out, which was frustrating for an AYCE spot. They also seemed to be selective about which banchans they would refill. They would bring more of the dishes like kimchi and cucumber, but when we asked for more tuna mac, they wouldn't give us any. It also looked like there were only two people working while there were probably around 10 tables during the Tuesday lunch rush, so I do think they were understaffed. If you're offering AYCE, the refills and service should flow a lot more smoothly. It felt like they were paying more attention the tables that selected a higher tier of AYCE. Not a terrible experience, but definitely not as seamless or enjoyable as I was hoping for.
