I hate leaving a poor review for any business; especially a small business... So maybe it was just our dinning experience... The physical size of the restaurant is small and cozy; with white table clothes, sushi bar, and attentive staff. Simon was behind the sushi bar, and greeted everyone that enter with a warm welcome. We were promptly seated at the sushi bar, but were not presented with a sushi menu? Strange, but this was corrected promptly. This establishment is BYOB, so we had stopped and purchased a bottle of wine at the Plano's first liquor store on the way. I placed the bottle on the sushi bar when we were seated. The wait staff brought two wine glasses, yet did not offer to open (uncork) the bottle until we asked. They did bring a plastic container of ice water to keep it chilled as we dined. I noticed quit a few regular's in the restaurant talking to Simon, again a good sign! We ordered the Thursday sushi special, the Better than Sex roll, and another house specialty dish (again sushi), a house salad, and soup. Pass on the Suimono soup. I was not expecting a hearty soup, it was warm with a dried mushroom or two floating around, yet it had no taste. A bullion cube had more taste. The Thursday special was not too special. A plate of tarter sauce, with quick fried tuna that was OK, drizzled with a red sauce. There was not much taste, in fact it reminded me of the cafeteria fried fish with the tarter sauce! The BTS role, was served promptly. The presentation was nice, yet it lacked distinct flavor. Maybe it was the garnish? The sauce was generously pooled onto it before serving (think pico de gio).The third dish was served, after we had picked at the BTS role. I had high hopes for this role since Simon actually prepared it for us (the later two dishes appeared from the kitchen, pre-made perhaps?). Again, a let down, this role was over powered with mayo and tempura batter. We could not taste the fish. Speaking of tempura and mayo, that about sums the entire flavor palette up when it comes to this sushi bar. My wife was disappointed to say the least, and was ready to pay and leave, but I wanted to give Simon another go. We asked for his recommendation for a tuna dish, that did not have an overpowering tempura tasted. He recommended the tuna, asparagus roll. I tossed caution to the wind and order. The roll arrived shortly (again from the kitchen). The tuna was tasty, but the filing was asparagus fried in tempura, drizzled with spice mayo sauce..We finished what we could, pay the bill (sushi is never cheap) and left. We will not be going back. Too bad it is really close to the house too.. Look if you go for sushi you want to taste the fish and texture, not tempura and mayo. If I wanted fried fish we would have went to the cafeteria! read more

Great service but the worst sushi I've ever had! Sushi was dry and falling apart. BTS roll is overrated! We were missing the crab meat and seemed like it was drenched in oil. It's was off. Tuesday night roll was not fresh at all! Two words: imitation crab. Very disappointed!! We should of gone to Uni Sushi less than a mile away. I would not recommend this place. read more

Great family restaurant. The owner greets everyone that walks in and when you walk out. The "secret cheat-sheet" the waitresses give you is fun and adventurous. Always make it spicy. Location is quirky - near a hooters and next door to sarah's secret but not a big deal. We like the byob as well so we can bring what we like and it cuts down on check at the end. read more

This place isn't bad by any means, but after reading the reviews and hearing about it from friends, we were definitely underwhelmed. This place seems to cater to those who think of themselves as 'sushi lovers', but in reality like rolls that have a lot of fried filling and/or tons of toppings and sauces on them. We had the birds nest roll, the volcano roll (which was somewhat unappetizing due to the thick gob of barely warmed mayo sitting on the top), and a few pieces of sushi. The quality of the fish was ok, but overall Simon's doesn't top Uni in downtown Plano (also BYOB), which is superior in presentation and quality/selection of fish, taste of the rice used in the sushi, and offers an omakase sushi course which we always get. The service at Simon's was attentive and friendly. read more

We went to Simon's for my husband's birthday. He used to eat at Nakamoto a lot, back when Simon was the head chef there, and he said that Simon's was much better than Nakamoto, in fact he said it was the best sushi he'd ever had. He ordered about 14 different kinds and wound up with around 50-60 pieces. We walked out spending about $130 for the two of us, including the tip. Not bad for how much he got! The wait staff was very nice and helpful, and the soup and salad I ordered (not a sushi fan) were perfect and inexpensive. Overall a great experience and we will definitely be back. read more

Horribly disappointed. The service was unsatisfactory, my husband had to flag our waitress down numerous times for various items as well as to inquire about the status of our dinner. We ordered sushi which was mediocre at best and chicken teriyaki for our 3 year old twins. When the bill arrived we questioned the waitress because we were charged incorrectly. Long story short, the waitress was less then cooperative, and the manager was no better at resolving the issue; instead she grabbed the bill and stormed off. We will definitely not return to this establishment, the food was subpar and the service was unacceptable. read more

Easily the best Sushi in DFW - the best atmosphere (assuming you're there for the food and conversation, and not there to "be seen") After searching for good sushi for 2+ years of disappointment after relocating from CA - I've found it!!! Great specialty rolls and always consistent (gotta try their BTS roll!), felt more of a welcoming vibe in the first few visits, more later on I would think service improves with familiarity but it's actually the other way around, still a great sushi joint in Plano and BYOB never hurts :P read more

Simon's Sushi is my favorite. I am not a novice sushi eater, but I must admit that I typically prefer the shashimi and individual pieces. My favorites are Ikura and Unagi. However, I rarely order any of this at Simon's Sushi. There is a "special menu" that you have to ask for. Apparently, there was never even a menu for these items at all. You just had to know about them from somebody else. They are the ONLY things you should order on the menu. They are the most creative sushi I have ever experienced. They are all rolls. We were told that a loyal customer was upset that he could not remember all of the special items, so he made an Excel spreadsheet of all the special items. This laminated menu is now the "Special Menu." There are only three copies, so you may have to wait a minute. Simon is always on hand to share a drink... did I mention this is BYOB and there is no corking fee? Offer Simon a drink and you have a friend every time you go there. My favorites are BTS (Better Than Sex), Monday, Jennifer, Manhattan and Mermaid. I always get the Saturday for my last roll. It is an awesome sushi roll to end with because it has a tiny piece of lemon on top that gives it a refreshing aftertaste. Awesome with sake or white wine. read more

Great fresh fish, fantastic flavours, clean with a very good smiley service. We ordered several rolls from the menu and all were fantastic, including the BTS roll. And the kids meals were perfect, on cute Tigger plates with tasty food including fun shaped rice moulds (this stuff matters to those with young kids!) Family run restaurant with no airs or graces, just really good food. We enjoyed our first experience there and will be back! read more

Definitely as good as others have written, no doubt about that! The BTS roll is very unique, never had another sushi roll that tasted like this. Would definitely be interested in coming back to try other rolls. Every roll we had was seriously delicious, just a couple notes. Service wasn't that great, took more than an hour to order, get sushi and eat lunch. Was with two other people, we didn't really order that many rolls so wasn't sure what the issue was. Also, this place is really pricey for what you get in my opinion. I've been to many sushi places in the area with just as good or better quality for cheaper. This was my first time here. The place is small and in a busy parking lot between a optical place and an antique store. The lunch menu is sparse and is more for your non experienced sushi eater but ask for the "secret" menu. That's where the regular stuff is and you wont be disappointed. I had the 911. They were small in size but big on flavor. I also had the Sunshine Roll. This more decorative and had fish inside. The fresh sashimi was good as well as it should be. I highly recommend this place and I will be back. I would also recommend the "Sprinkle" roll but only if you enjoy very hot foods. read more

I have been here twice with groups for lunch. Had the chirashi one of the times, and the california and unagi rolls the other. Both were very fresh. The chirashi had a good variety and plenty of food and tasted delicious. The california and unagi were both very good as well. The miso soup had a slight "off" taste to it, not bad, just not the generic miso soup. It is a bit more expensive than I've been accustomed to for the same quality in the area. read more

Hence why the sushi is so fresh tasting. They do not serve alcohol. However it is BYOB. I suggest sitting at the sushi bar area if its open. Mr. Simon makes for good conversation. Little hole in the wall place off of 75 that's easy to miss. We walked in with a bottle of wine and the server had it uncorked for us 2 minutes after we sat down. Fast and very friendly service! We ordered a few rolls and some sashimi. One of the rolls, the "Sprinkle" roll should be named El Inferno.. Topped with some kind of chilis and diced jalapeño, it will set your mouth ablaze and set off The China Syndrome in your belly.. Love the concept, BYOB and sushi. And the food was good. But man, oh man, the service was horrific. We walked in with "6", which based on the reaction of the hostess/manager was 666. She acted as if we had took a dump on the floor vs. coming in sans reservation with the unholy number of 6. It went downhill from there. They made us wait forever to order and then processed the adults order before the kids which came out 20 minutes later (simple tuna and salmon rolls) full of wasabi. Then when we said the kids couldn't eat it, she came out and chastised us for not telling them they were for the kids. I'd like to give the place another chance. Perhaps the lady was having a bad day. But then again, Masami is closer and a lot more friendly to adults and kids alike, and If I'm going to drop $100+ for dinner, I want to enjoy the experience. read more

This place is not worth the walk from your car inside the door! First of all, they asked us to switch tables after we were already seated to accomodate a larger party. That was okay except they then took their order and served them before even taking our order! Then no one checked on us after receiving our food, we told 2 servers one of our rolls was inedible. The crawfish inside the Cajun roll was so rubbery and tough it was impossible to chew. They brought us the bill (finally), and they charged for the Cajun roll. We asked to see a manager to get the roll taken off the bill and she came to the table and called us liars saying the Cajun roll was fine! She finally said she would take the roll off the bill if we never ordered it again...well rest assured we will never go back there! read more
